Very deceptive pricing -- expect to pay nearly twice their quoted rate after 4 months. I was looking for a storage locker in late April, and saw a small space at Extra Space Storage for $129/month. When I called, they told me that was in fact the rate, BUT they could only rent it to me if they could add a $14/month "insurance" charge, even if I didn't want my stuff insured. So at the beginning, the quoted $129/month was really $143. But I decided that was okay. They asked me to pay the first 4 months in advance, and I agreed. As soon as that 4 months was over, I received the attached rate increase in the mail: My $129/month rate was raised to $209/month BEFORE I could even make my first single monthly payment. Note the code in the lower right corner: "20250424 RATEINCR" -- that is, a Rate Increase that they planned for on April 24th, 2025, the day that I signed up with them. The contract does clearly say that they can change the rates whenever they want, so this isn't illegal, but this code makes it clear that from day one they expected to quickly change the pricing that their website quoted. That $129/month quote that attracted me was, as soon as they could change it, up to $223/month -- over $1100/year more than they advertised. They understand that once you have moved your stuff in, it is a lot of work to move it back out, and they are unethically taking advantage of that. I called, and the woman I talked to explained that 4 months is when they usually raise rates. I explained (politely, but heatedly) that I thought this was an unethical business practice, and that I'd leave reviews saying so. They took my name and called back a couple of hours later to reduce my $80 rent increase to a $40 rent increase. So, if they live up to this phone call (which we will see next month), they've only increased my rent by 31%. So anyone wanting to do business with them, you should budget a significant price increase 4 months after you move in, and you'll need to make a call and threaten to move out if you don't want it to be 60+%. If you do decide that pricing is acceptable (or maybe all locker places play these kind of pricing games), also know that the app is pretty cool and opens the gates and outer doors, but that app is spotty, I believe due to bluetooth/cellphone connectivity being blocked by all the concrete and steel in the location. Also, of the 3 times we visited to load our locker, the elevator was broken one of those times, which was a LOT of stairs to climb while carrying boxes of books. read more

After a traumatic confrontation with termites who had infested my previous storage unit elsewhere, I was urgently on the hunt for another storage facility in town (like STAT). I had driven past Extra Space Storage on several occasions and thought it always looked nice and sparkly new. More than anything, I focused on three storage priorities: - All metal store unit enclosure - Decent security with cameras - Expansive hours of access - A location that is not too far from my home - Air conditioning; not necessarily a must but a bonus Thankfully, Extra Space Storage matched all these criteria, and more! I looked up what units were available on their user-friendly website and reserved a unit online for a tour the following day. Although I did not hear back from them, I decided to drop in to check it out. I was happy to have a reservation since it is near UCSB's campus and the units are in high demand. I met Robert who is the property manager. He allowed me access to peek at the storage unit I was interested in, provided me pricing and contract information, and allowed me to contact him with any questions. He was helpful and welcoming--particularly when I rented the unit and stopped in the following day for move-in. On move-in day (dread!), Robert had thoroughly cleaned the unit and had my fancy circular pre-purchased lock with instructions waiting for me. While I wished the gal at the front desk was as enthusiastic and friendly as he was, they got the job done. The hallways are locked with a combination code, brightly lit, air conditioned, and there are dollies available for transporting your items. My only one concern is that while you can cancel your unit at any time, they also have the ability to increase your rental cost with the drop of a hat. Hopefully this won't be an issue. *Fingers crossed* Thanks to Robert at Extra Space Storage, I no longer dread going to the storage unit and have termite PTSD! read more

I rented a unit at the Goleta CA location. When I spoke to the gentleman on the phone I told him that I wanted a closet size unit. He said that he couldn't guarantee me a unit that I needed a month from now so I decided to rent for 2 months rather than 1. I had used your Irvine location previously and didn't need to go into the office or have them let me in so I figured the same would be the case here. I am flying in from Illinois to help my daughter move out of her apartment and into the storage unit until her new apartment is ready on 8/20. I literally had a couple of hours to do this before we had to leave for a flight out of SF the next morning. We got done and drove to your location at 8 pm (after office hours). I used the gate code and got in and proceeded to drive around the A and B buildings numerous times. My daughter went to the back entrance which had the C and D buildings. I was apparently located in H. Nothing was clearly marked nor do you have a map online nor at your complex. (That should be a GIVEN in making sure someone can find their unit NOT during office hours) I called your after hours and spoke to one gentleman who was helpful but when he called your store manager the phone disconnected. Then the next man I spoke to was nothing but rude and condescending. He kept telling me I need to use the keypad. I had FINALLY found a double blue door that had H and W units but it had a regular key lock. NO keypad next to it. The next closest keypad was next to the bathroom. I told him that, used the code and told him "yup, I'm able to open the bathroom door." I kept asking to speak to a manager and he kept telling me no or dismissed what I was asking. Remember how I said I was there at 8 pm? Well it was 9:45 and I still don't have access and your guy tells me there is nothing he can do and I need to go back there during office hours. He kept saying that over and over. I do not need to go there during office hours if you had the unit marked and accessible during all hours. So where my unit was, would I just be able to access it since it was behind a keyed door? Then on top of it this guy tells me my code to get into that unit is completely different to what you sent me and on my app. What you have sent to me was NOT that so I wouldn't have even been able to get into it if I had found it! Anyways, I kept pushing for a supervisor as I was leaving at 6 am the next morning and AGAIN wouldn't be available during "office hours". Which I shouldn't even need to do! He finally sent me to Pri. My daughter & I had already left because it was past 10 and I was getting no where. We had ended up loading up her entire life into her car and moved it to where we had scheduled her car to be parked until 8/20. When we got there there was a group of teenage boys there so I didn't feel safe leaving her car with her whole personal property out in the public to be easily broken into. I explained the situation to Pri. I sent her a picture of the door that the last guy swears there was a keypad to show there was NO keypad. Where I was at is where she said that I should've been. She said that there was a keypad at the front door as well. There wasn't. I tell her everything. Come to find out that your guy didn't schedule me for a closet sized room but an itty bitty box that will hold "maybe 4 boxes" according to Pri. I asked her if there were any other units available in the size I had requested and she said there was and she placed me at C. She gave me a temporary passcode to allow me to place my daughter's belongings in that evening. Also, she said that the code to that building was the same number the guy previously gave me. We placed our items in the unit and attempted to leave. Unfortunately the temporary code and the code that was given to me previously was disabled. Your security guy ended up putting his code in for me to be able to leave your facility. I got home around 4 am (Central time) as my flight was diverted due to weather. I get home and try to sign into my account and it says I do not have one. I have a contract that was signed until 8/21 for that unit that I did with Pri. I would like to have my gate code sent to me. Pri also said that I would not be charged for the change and I would have fees waived for this situation. I would like to have an itemized bill sent to me as well. This has been a truly horrible experience which is disappointing as your Irvine location had everything clearly marked and easily accessible without needing to go into an office. read more

How do I give the Extra space storage facility in Carpinteria a minus star review? My belongings are ruined in their facility-- the outdoor unit doors do not keep the outside dirt from blowing in so everything is filthy , too dirty to even touch. And moldy from humidity. My belongings on the indoor units also are moldy and covered in blown in dust and dirt. They provide no services, have no expenses, but keep raising the rates over and over.... I want urgently to get my stuff out of there, but everything is so filthy and moldy it will cost a fortune to clean each and every item before boxes can be opened or moved. One of the employees photographed the condition in my units, and didn't even want to breathe the possibly black moldy air inside them, and thought I should receive some assistance with the situation, until the manager said they had no responsibility for the conditions inside the units, even if the doors are faulty and don't keep out dirt or moisture-- which they don't. I am looking into suing them, although I am sure they have protected themselves from any responsibility except to collect $ from foolish customers. They know that once you put your stuff there, there is a high likelihood you'll never escape-- it's like a black hole. Don't be fooled-- this place is a filthy nightmare. read more

I was looking for a storage unit for business purposes and knowing this business was close to my house, I decided to call and see if there were available units. They didn't have a lot of units available but I was able to get one of the last ones. To reserve this unit was surprisingly easy and seamless. All I had to do was complete the contract, pay online and get information on which unit and entrance to use. Since I am using this unit for business, I have packages delivered and they agreed to put the packages in the unit which makes life easy for me; other storage places in the area do not accept packages at all. These units are unbelievably clean and I would definitely recommend Extra Space Storage to anyone who needs storage with a clean and friendly environment. The only downfall this place has for me is that they do not have garbages that renters can use, other than that I am 100% satisfied with this business. read more

How this company has the rating it does is very suspect. Let me tell you what kind of a business this really is. When I first looked to rent from them in June 2021, the cost for a 10x10 unit was about $200. When I arrived in July, they had raised the rent to $394. Why? Because the severe housing shortage in the Santa Barbara area increased massively. UCSB students living in their cars were eventually moved into motels and middle-class people like me, who just relocated here ended up couch-surfing, unable to find work immediately, my savings was quickly eaten up by the extremely high cost of this storage unit. BUT THEN, after only renting for 3 months, EXTRA STORAGE INCREASED MY RENT TO $480.00 !!!!!! I reached out to customer service to no avail. I finally reached out to customer service via Twitter and received a quick response that they would have the general manager call me ASAP. It's been two weeks and no one has called. I've been in touch with the storage unit and offered to pay them the rate I signed up for which is already an exorbitant amount of money to pay for a storage unit But they won't accept it. I've filed a complaint with the BBB and will continue informing the public to avoid the business!!! A company who takes advantage of a housing shortage during COVID-19 should be ashamed of itself. DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE FOR STORAGE. FIND OTHER REVIEWS, there are many. read more

I recently had to acquire another storage due to the passing of my son. They again met me with amazing customer service. This disgusting company doesn't answer the phone, I've called over and over again to no avail. The owner or PR person left me a fake, caring respond on my review to call them so we may resolve the issue, but they do not answer- I've called numerous times. The only time these crooks answer the phone is for new business, if you're behind on payments (assuming a new payment on their end) , and not to mention but not only do they treat their customers terrible but they must treat their employees bad as well due their attitude & revolving door-always new people working. Please do your homework, do yourself a favor and find a better storage for yourself- you deserve it. The rates go up continually. It's greed, whatever the market will bear. The units at my end of the property have no light in them so u depend on the hall light which is on a timer. Every so many minutes you're in pitch darkness and have to walk down the hall. ​For the cost of $540 you would hope to have a light. Have to move out because the rent is SO high. I was misled when moving in that if I opted to not take the first month free deal, my rent would likely not increase as quickly, but it was raised 3 months later. I felt misled and cheated out of a free months rent. Yes very clean facilities, and loved the late gate access hours of 10 p.m. I heard from someone they have lighted units in the opposite end of the property, and pay much much less. I wasn't told about these lighted units by the manager. It's curious why some pay much less for larger lighted units? read more

For cleanliness, help from Robert, and accessibility, Extra Storage Space deserves 5 stars. I had to store all belongings for about 5 months in one of the larger units, and afterwards, once I had moved, switched to a much smaller unit, storing the remainder of my boxes for over a year and a half. This past week I moved the rest of the boxes and closed my account. Overall, there was an easy payment system, good security and access, no leaks in either of the units, the area inside and outside was always clean, no signs of rodent or other pest infiltrations, and no mildew - a must for any storage space. If I had to store my boxes of possessions again, I would definitely choose Extra Storage Space. read more

PLUS, the storage unit is clean and fresh and temperature-controlled, the site is clean with plenty of parking area and the gate makes secure access. I, like many others, also had a bad experience with this facility. STAY AWAY FROM THEM! They apparently raise the rates frequently throughout the year [starting within 2 months from when you move in], and the rate increases are significant so even their "intro" deals will not mean much in the end. Total bait and switch!! My story: I rented a 10x10 unit in late October 2021. I was given an "offer" of $25/month for the first month, with the rate to increase to $364 starting the 2nd month. I specifically asked them, is that where the rate will stay and was told yes. They never disclosed that they can and will raise the rates starting fairly soon after you move in. Being a good deal, I rented the space. Well this week, after renting for a little over 2 months, I got notice that my rate will jump in 30 days by over $40.00. I called and spoke to Robert, who told me that it's in my contract. He was very uncaring and dismissive. I explained this was never disclosed to me during the lengthy conversation I had before I agreed to rent the unit about everything including the monthly rates and any increases. He said we don't address that when we initially speak to you b/c it's in your contract. [Which one, they send you 6]. So why were they able to address everything about the monthly rent, etc. but not this very important issue? He did tell me they raise there rates about 4x per year, so who knows how much the next increase will be considering other reviews that mention almost $100 increases! He had a nonchalant attitude, and could care less about keeping my business or addressing my concerns, he essentially told me, no there is nothing we can do for you and if you don't like it you can go elsewhere, most other places are booked and raising their rates too [which by the way is not true, this is one of the more pricey facilities in town]. A very cold dismissive response considering the hassle to rent a truck and haul everything out now to another facility. It was pretty disgusting actually, like they prey on people in this manner. Like others, I too believe this company is taking advantage of people during a housing crisis here, and Covid, likely banking on the fact that either people won't be able to find another unit easily and will be stuck and/or won't want to leave and pay to move their stuff to another place and will just pay the increase. So my plan is to give my notice as soon as I find another place. Now I have to deal with the hassle of this on top of trying to find housing. They could care less. Do NOT DO BUSINESS with this company! Do yourself a favor and find another facility that is not crooked, and that has better customer service and will make sure to disclose things when you ask questions up front especially about rate increases which apparently are frequent and high, and that won't lead you astray. Don't get into the position that I and many others did with their bait and switch tactics because you'll get stuck or have to move your stuff again. I too may be contacting BBB about this very unethical business. read more

Got locked inside the storage place because I was packing in my stuff and lost track of time. So I called them to unlock the gate, which they did! But the next morning they called me to yell at me??? and they told me if I get locked in again they will take away my access code to get into the storage unit??? what kind of customer service is this??? did I just get threatened... I mean man.. I'm sorry that I lost track of time but no need to threaten me with my code.. and I pay for the storage unit... I don't think they have the right to threaten me in such a way. read more
