Okay, if you're looking for a major supermarket to do your main shopping at, this may or may not be the place for you, full disclosure. It doesn't focus on ambiance either, but it's clean enough. I will say that I once saw one of the workers who was putting bread into the bins drop a roll, pick it up off the floor, and put it back in, so that right there loses a star. Otherwise, judging it for what it is, it would get four stars. I probably wouldn't go here to do my main grocery shopping, but if you are in the area and looking to pick up a few things for a cheap lunch or something, this is a really intelligent choice, and the service is friendly, so you can really go budget here and enjoy a decent lunch on the cheap by picking up a roll (I know, I know.) and one or two of those $1 cold cut packs, maybe grab a drink, and you're good. Especially in this day and age, this is a place that allows you to be able to afford a meal very much on the cheap, and that to me is quite valuable because people need to eat. So yeah, if they were a little more sanitary or a lot more sanitary when it comes to not throwing dropped bread rolls back into the bin, this would be a solid four stars for me. The associates are rude and particularly rude to the African and Caribbean Americans who make up the majority of the community they serve. The managers should improve customer service and respect ALL paying customers. I would not shop there. I'll take my money where customers are appreciated regardless of ethnicity or skin color. It's sad that some people look with disdain upon the very people that fought hard in this country for equal and civil rights, and freedom. The only reason they get 2 stars is because they do have many African products (ie, palm oil, utazi leaves and others) and Hispanic products at a decent price. In terms of general non-ethnic products, their quality is subpar and is very expensive (meats are full of fat and often times their fruits are not fresh). It is very unfortunate and disheartening that in a not-as-well-to-do (indigent) neighborhood, this local supermarket would have prices way higher than Stop & Shop which people without cars may not have access to. I would only go to this supermarket for a handful of "ethnic" products which may be more difficult to find elsewhere. read more

I went into the location on central ave and purchase a stake and chicken and when i got home and looked at the meat it made me sick of the stomach.i call the store and the person chuckled and I told her that they're going to get someone sick .and they're going to be sued if they keep this practice up not caring about the consumers and given them the right type of food I do you believe they're being inspected if they are they might be greasing somebody's hand. The East Orange store security officer still throws customers out for not wearing a face mask on 5/31/2021. That was a week after the fed and state gov stopped mask mandatory wearing for fully vaccinated people. The customer showed the vaccine card but still was refused to shop without a mask on. how is this place still open??? i give zero stars. this place is a disgrace. i purchages over $160 worth of food. items on the shelf were expired. the meat was discolored and old. when i unpacked the items and placed them in the fridge/freezer everything just looked old and ran down and beat up. fast forward until the next morning!! when i woke up the next morning to make breakfast for my family everything in my entire freezer/fride was freezer burn. i had to throw everything out. even the items i did not purchase from them had to be thrown out. $160 bucks down the drain. i called to complain and do you think the manager would of at least apologized. i asked him if he had anything to say and his response was " im just listening" if we continue to support this we will get sick from expired, old, tainted food. this is just not ok! im starting a petition for this store to be shut down or for everything to be thrown out and new food be restocked for the community. we as the people need to take action, this has been going on for far too long. look at the reviews. please copy and paste the link in the search engine to vote for our neighborhood supermarket to maintain better and healthy foods https://chng.it/9rfxdFBgft read more

Not the best Extra location, but close to home and "was" convenient...Maplewood is where you need to go for fresh meat & fish and a clean store with helpful employees. East Orange is filthy, the meat department smells like old dried up blood all of the time, and it is now a place I will no longer shop. There is no return policy or customer service practices in place just the arrogance of security saying he said so and that the computer which is operated by human intelligence can not process an exchange of merchandise that was purchased within 2 hours from the Lyons Ave location. I wasn't trying to exchange any produce or prepared foods. All I requested was to exchange $5.50 of sugar (because I bought too much for a fundraiser) for $40 worth of chicken and I would pay the difference. Plain Economics 101. One bad experience did it for me. Customer service is provided by a security guard named "Eppi". He's fairly new on the scene and his arrogance is out of place. He is condescending and clearly has no consumer goods/retail experience because he compared the food in Extra to what is sold at Burger King---grocery vs fast food. And told me that I was not right because I am a customer. That's when I ended our conversation because I don't do ignorance. #icant The separate locations benefit from advertising on the same circular, but the consumer does not benefit from shopping at East Orange. I asked several times for "Urs" the shift manager and "Eppi" to show me the return policy that states returns/exchanges are not accepted from another location with a valid receipt. This store notorious and openly sells stale and expired raw meat ON SALE. BUYERS BEWARE. This week of Dec 21, 2018 they are selling Jennie-O lean ground turkey for $1.99/pound. On careful examination the expiration date of this meat printed on the packaging is 10/23/18. They are selling 60-days over expired meat. AND THEY ARE OPENLY SELLING IT IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Two months ago they had chicken thighs for less than a dollar a pound. Based on trust I picked it up. When I was washing it the chicken smelled funky but I did not pay attention as I was in a rush. When my shake and bake came out of the oven and into my mouth, I had to spit it out. Disgusting foul and rotten chicken. Supermarket has evovled over the years for the better my parents told me wyen they first started shopping here the floor wasnt tiled it was saw dust.. A big thank you to whoever was the driving force to updating inside the supermarket because its cleaner than i can recall growing up. You will save a lot of money buying groceries here versus shoprite but i suggest paying cash a few times i came with my cc and they wouldnt let me buy my food because i didnt bring my state id it was a complete turn off on how the cashier handled the situation and i actually stopped going for a few months but eventually i came back. Love cooking island dishes? Or just want to find a popular snack from your homeland youll find it here or at the tropical sun supermarket on maint st. Caution to buyers like all supermarkets you must double even triple check items you buy. Extra is a neighborhood supermarket that sells food at reasonable prices. And they usually carry food that most supermarkets may not carry. I wish the store's appearance was better but other than that it's not so bad. read more

This store doesn't match up with the other (Extra Supermarket Ads) that have sales going on some guy that works there told me that their sales are different from the other stores and another thing their meats and fresh vegetable are not all that fresh smelling and looking.
