Eye Care Hawaii surpassed all my expectations for my annual eye exam. The staff is very friendly and professional and all work efficiently and effectively to ensure their patients are comfortable and attended to. Despite having a full waiting room, Dr. Miyashiro went above and beyond in reviewing my photos and tests, taking time to get to know me and make sure any questions I had were answered. I'm recommending Eye Care Hawaii to all my friends and family (and Yelp) for the following reasons: 1. Lovely office - handcrafted Hawaiian furniture featuring beautiful photography of the island and Hawaiian music playing in each room. Very classy, yet earthy -- nicest office of any medical practice I've ever visited. Favorite part was the "relaxation room", which was a comfortable room with dimmed lighting to wait while your eyes dilate. Free tea and coffee while you wait and browse their wide selection of magazines (or admire the architecture and furnishings or glasses selection). 2. Amazing staff. Each and every one of them makes sure you know that you're being taken care of. Never experienced such a polite, educated and friendly staff. I was never pressured to purchase glasses or contacts, but when I did, they put in the time and trouble to place orders from outside companies even though they weren't making any profit from the sale. 3. State-of-the-art equipment. They have two rooms to do preliminary testing. The second room is full of brand new equipment to take digital imaging of your eyes. Dr. Miyashiro went over these images with me, explaining what I have seen. Hadn't seen those types of machines nor that type of imaging used at my previous optometrists' offices. I've been to optometrists in many cities across the US, and have never experience the level of expertise, professionalism, customer service and comfort that I have at Eye Care Hawaii. read more

After reading the other reviews about this eye practice, I feel like I need to add my experience. This eye practice is a medical eye practice that focuses on eye health and vision, not just fixing and selling glasses and contacts. They have the best, newest equipment in Hilo and I feel confident that if I had any eye problems that they would detect them. Their staff is well trained and they have very fashionable brands of frames for those who want to get glasses. That said, I don't need any vision correction. I go there strictly for a yearly eye exam because this is what is recommended for everyone, even if you don't need to see better. My medical insurance (not vision) covers this exam and I pay the copay. The tests they run with their machines, although annoying because I blink really easily, can detect eye health problems that have no other symptoms such as glaucoma, which if untreated can make you go blind! If that isn't a motivation for seeing an eye doctor once a year, I don't know what is. For kicks one time, I asked if I could get color contacts. Even though I don't need them for vision correction. It turns out that my strong blinking reflex is also a problem for putting in contacts so at one point I had two staff members helping me put in my contacts. They were very friendly and helpful. I ultimately decided against using the colored contacts because I couldn't get them in and out myself, but if you do need help getting contacts for the first time, they have really good service. read more

The nose piece on my glasses broke Friday night and I found that my optometrist was closed on Saturday. An Internet search revealed good reviews for Eye Care Hawaii and they were open until 4 p.m. on Saturday, the longest of those open. The fellow who helped me told me that he would change both nose pads so that they would match and went in the back to work on it. When he returned he explained that there was a large screw on the side that tore, so he replaced the screw with a properly sized one. When I asked what I owed for the repair, he replied that there was no charge. My optometrist office also changes both nose pads, but they charge $8. Eye Care Hawaii replaced both and changed the big screw for someone when was not even a previous customer, and did it all for free. They deserve this excellent review, at least. read more

For Employment inquires if they have questions before starting a work environment at this place. Pros:Co-workers and Doctors try their best, but leadership makes it impossible to succeed. Main title Poor Management, Heavy Favoritism, and No Respect for Staff. Cons:Unprofessional Leadership: Management is completely resistant to change. They refuse to listen to valid complaints or collaborate on problem-solving. Hostile Work Culture: The environment rewards tattle-telling over teamwork, leading to a toxic atmosphere where workers are treated poorly. Abrupt Terminations: There is no job security here. You can be let go out of nowhere with zero notice. No Sick Leave Payout: Any earned sick leave you have built up will not be paid out if you are terminated. read more

Eye Care Hawaii staff and doctors were excellent. I have been under their care for a long time. Their experience and knowledge in the field of eye care has been great. The staff and I developed a very close friendship. As you enter their establishment, you will feel a sense of comfort knowing that you will be taken care. I even had my mom register as a new patient. She is 92 years young who loved the staff, the examination and analysis by the Doctor was simple to understand and the friendly atmosphere it offered. Wonderful environment here! Love the magazines & coffee! Great customer service, quality doctors that are super educated & are well trained in new innovative procedures. My glaucoma test came back perfect at age 64 because of the knowledge Dr. Miyashiro & Dr. Yang gave me years prior - eat more leafy green veggies, meditate etc. New age info. I am no longer in Hawaii but I spent seven wonderful years there and saw the doctor at Eye Care Hawaii on a regular basis. They always treated me like family. The doctor explained everything to me very carefully in plain English and the staff was always willing to work with my busy schedule. Got to appointment early and they took me in right away. The lady's were very polite, professional and helpful, taking time to do all the required test prior to seeing the doctor. The doctor walked me through all the test that were taken and explained what he found during the exam. They lady's the work the glasses were extremely nice and helpful. The staff always does an awesome job taking care of my now ninevyear old daughter. A patient since she was six years old, gets through all the machines with the techs while they talk about her interests. One of the few places left that treat their patients with care and dignity. I take my dad in for his appointments. The staff are generally friendly and greet you with a smile. However, there are a few there that could put a smile on rather than looking irritable.
