They weighed a big handful of all sterling silver (over 14 ounces!) and offered me $10, and when I complained that the going rate, as indicated online that morning, was over $2000 per ounce, they insisted that pawn shops only offer 70 cents on an ounce! And that's not the biggest rip off! I also had few small14k and one 18k gold piece to pawn - a few pieces. They offered me $300, which I also didn't think was fair. I then drove to South Charlotte Jewelry & Loan who loaned me $533 for the same gold (without the sterling silver) that Smart Pawn offered for $300!! So beware! I would never, ever go back to Smart Pawn and Jewelry again! Their prices are out of touch and they are ripping people off! At South Charlotte they were sweet as pie - like I was in a different world. They deserve your business and are only 10 to 15 minutes away from Smart Pawn but worth the drive!

As Charlotte went through its boom in the '90s and '00s, many of these places disappeared as older streetcar neighborhoods gentrified at a rapid pace and were replaced by yuppiefied establishments. It is great that Central Avenue, despite the many changes of businesses that have come and gone, has been able to retain this type of business amidst the supposed upscale bars and eateries found nearby. Every time I walk past I always peer inside because there's always something interesting to look at. I recently stopped by and browsed through their assortment of items and saw that they have old estate-looking jewelry as well as random memorabilia, bicycles, musical instruments and the like. The young man working there was quite pleasant and amiable and told me that their Late Night Pawn, a well-known neighborhood joint in the rear of the building, has not been open recently due to a shortage of staff but I suspect that it is closed for other reasons. If you decide that you are interested in purchasing or pawning, there is no reason not to come here, especially since this place is not seedy like the other pawn shops remaining in Charlotte. Even though the employee I spoke with today (whose name I shall withhold here at least at this time) claimed to have the ability to hack into my personal financial information on the computer, and threatened to do so, after I explained that I would be taking this very step in posting my experiences, I am doing this anyway because I think this business's practices should be exposed.
