I almost didn't stop here as I had already visited five nurseries this day (not to mention it was…read morepouring rain!), but how can you not check out a place called The Happy Bee?! I nearly slammed on my breaks and trotted on in. This is smaller than some of the other area nurseries as it is just one greenhouse open for shopping, but the greenhouse itself is large and filled with all sorts of good stuff! They seemed to have more annual flowers than anything else, but it was also early in the season for vegetables and I got the impression they would have more as things warmed up. Noteable finds for me were epazote and summer savory (two herbs I have sought near and far but to no avail until now!) along with many more herbs, a large variety of peppers and tomatoes, colorful stocks, strawberries, and many marigolds (including my favorite, strawberry blonde). Oh and they had the requisite hanging baskets found everywhere this time of year. Prices here were some of the cheapest I have seen, with many plants under $2. Employees were quick at checkout, and this was a nice alternative to some of the other, busier nurseries. It felt more open and easier to navigate.

If they don't have it they will do their best to find it for you. They have a presence, and followers on Facebook Marketplace. Which is how my sister initially found them. Hubbard is quite a ways to drive but when you're supporting small business it's worth the trek. You also will be happy to know that they give customers wholesale prices for your purchase. Call before heading there just to make sure they have what your are looking for. They're definitely worth checking out.

Seriously, I started to try to pick some out, but I didn't have a lot of spare time, so decided I'd better return when I had a couple hours. They, no exaggeration, have 500+ varieties! In addition to the absolutely insane amount of hostas, they also had more varieties of ferns, astilbe and epimedium than I have ever seen gathered in one place. I quickly filled a basket with my selections, then loped along, arms overflowing with additional plants that didn't fit. There were a couple customers in line as I was paying, and we all laughed about trying to limit your purchases by only using a basket. Learn from my mistakes and opt for the carts! Anyways, I ended up with a beautiful golden geum, three hardy fuchsias, two yellow wonder strawberries, a red (Valentine) bleeding heart, striped lily of the valley, a hardy begonia, and dancing geisha dianthus. They had all the kooky, fun plant varieties that I am always seeking, in addition to their more standard counterparts. They also had limited bushes and trees, and some pretty display gardens and landscaping to serve as inspiration. Prices are comparable to other nurseries, in some cases lower. The gentleman who assisted me at checkout was friendly and nice, and Sebright just felt like such a pleasant place to shop as all the customers were so sweet and echoed excitement about everyone else's finds in addition to their own. Sebrights are my favorite chickens. Just look one up and tell me they aren't the cutest! You know this nursery must be good if they share a moniker. Lastly, while they don't have a specific date they open for the season each year, for 2022 it was the end of March, and they said that is about in line with what they normally do. I live in Portland so I took a little drive there and what a beautiful selection of annuals and perrenials. In February, they have Hellebore Days on weekends (also open by appointment), where you can peruse over 40 varieties of Hellebores. Ahhh! I am always itching to get out in the garden (no pun intended!) this time of year, but it is so early and many nurseries aren't even open yet. Here, though, they are celebrating many of the most special winter blooming beauties. They are located fairly far from my home, so I called before heading out and the owner picked up right away and happily answered my questions about prices and what she currently had in stock. And she was just as lovely in person! I was interested in a particular variety of hellebore which she found for me, then directed me to some others that had a similar look. Then I just had a wander around and pretty quickly fell in love with several other plants. They have a beautiful display garden along with a sweet corgie, friendly tortie kitty, and even the teeniest most adorable little serama chickens. I could have spent hours there! I ended up with a couple hellebores, a unique and new-to-me variety of Sweet Box, a beautiful and incredibly fragrant witch hazel (in addition to the hellebores, they had the largest variety of witch hazels I have ever seen) and a nice size Chinese Paperbush that I just could not walk away from (if you know anything about them she is Akebono and she is gorgeous!). I left behind a purple daphne that I'm still kicking myself about. They have a wide variety of plants, but they do seem to have special love for the more shade tolerant and/or fragrant varieties. Prices on all were good to excellent. I believe they had three designated parking spots, but there was another grassy section that appeared to be used for overflow parking, and I wouldn't expect them to get super busy anyways (although by the time I left there were several other customers there). This was such a great little nursery and an absolute pleasure to shop, I will absolutely be back.
