I'm ashamed to say that up until recently, I hadn't shopped for fabric anywhere but Joanns. But finally, enough was enough, and as I commit to sewing more and delving into the world of quilting, I decided to source all my fabric from places other than Joanns, opting instead to explore the small fabric stores in my area, and what a great decision that was! I was able to discover so many new favorites, 2nd Street Quilt Shop being one of them, and source so many gorgeous, fresh & new designs I had never seen before! It has truly renewed my interest in sewing, and I'm truly excited to embark on this new quest in quilting! Fabric Affair appears to be a newer business, as their store sign also has "now open" directly underneath it! I can't tell you how many times I have driven down Livernois not realizing that this was here. The building is very unassuming from the road, just a black & grey square of a building, but if you love sewing and quilting and are in need of any sewing-related items, whether it be fabric, thread, or something else, I highly encourage you to stop by! The interior space of this place completely blew me away and was completely not what I expected from seeing the outside. You can definitely tell it's nice & new. The floors and entire space is so well organized! The fabric is sorted by color and by themes, if any. It's just a Type A, organized, sewing-lover's paradise! They also do classes here too it seems! I was mainly here for fabric though, so I got down to business searching through all their rows and rows of fabric. Everything being color coordinated, mainly in one spot, really helped me out though, as I was going for a specific part of the color palette. I was able to efficiently shop through this space, and the employees were so helpful, stopping by to see if I needed any assistance and grabbing me a fabric cart without me even asking for one. I love when they anticipate needs, and can I just say this fabric cart is ADORABLE?! I had never used one before, and it just makes the shopping experience all that more fun! I love Fabric Affair! I found so many new & unique fabrics here that I can't wait to incorporate into future sewing and quilting projects! Fabric Affair is my happy place. I have been shopping there for over 5 years. I started shopping, sewing, and taking classes there because I was treated poorly elsewhere, so when I saw an unfavorable review here I wanted to take the time to set the record straight. During the last 5 years I have been at Fabric Affair at a minimum of once a week. Never once has Richard, Michelle, or any member of the staff treated me or anyone else within my earshot with anything but respect and kindness. Moreover, Fabric Affair has built it's reputation on being helpful. It is the very foundation of their business. Many times, I have gone to the store with a difficult project and Michelle or the staff have always been happy to sit down and look at my project and find a solution for me. So, when I saw that the previous reviewer said they were unhelpful and supercilious, I can only imagine that she was projecting her own behavior and attitude onto "the male owner," or perhaps she was sent from a competing shop. Fabric Affair is the number 1 Bernina dealer in Michigan and number 1 in their district. They got to number 1 because of their great service and dedication to their customers. Richard takes incredible care of my machines. I trust him completely with all of my machines. I laughed when I read the previous reviewer's comment that Berninas had a "very high repair frequency." First, it is completely not true. Bernina sewing machines are sophisticated computerized machines, they are precision machines, work horses, and very fast. No other machine in the industry can match their accuracy. That is why I own more than one. There is a bit of a learning curve with a new machine, but Fabric Affair offers free machine classes to anyone that purchases their machine from them, and they are always a phone call away. If you take nothing else from my review consider these two statements from the previous reviewer: "...does he really think I am stupid enough to buy a $14,000 machine without trying it out?" and ask yourself why anyone would consider buying a $14,000 machine if it did indeed have a "very high repair frequency?" I can tell you from my over 5 years of experience in dealing with Fabric Affair that review does not pass the sniff test. Take my advice, visit Fabric Affair yourself, buy your machine there, and it may even become your happy place too. read more

It's always fun to find a store that truly is passionate about what they do and cares about their clientele. Every staff member seems excited to be a part of the operation and are willing to freely share their expertise. The classes are phenomenal and help you to learn to become better at whatever you choose to do. What can I say, there's nothing better than a Bernina and to have people with the expertise to help you learn how to use it and maintain it, is a fabulous experience. If you're passionate about sewing and learning how to get better, it's a great place for you. If you have not yet experienced Fabric Affair, you are in for a treat. Michelle greets her customers as if you were guests in her home. She is such an upbeat and truly caring person. Everyone is greeted with a smile, a delightful sense of humor, a pot of coffee, and a stash of cookies and other goodies. Michelle, Richard, and the support staff are all so knowledgeable and helpful. If you have a question or need help, just ask! Michelle offers free classes for those who purchase machines from Fabric Affair. In addition to that, she or staff members are happy to assist customers (guests, as Michelle calls us) work through problems on our projects. When I have lacked basic information, Michelle filed in the gaps for me. On a regular basis I have observed Michelle offering that same type of assistance to others. Sometimes I marvel at the patience and sensitivity of Michelle. I've never seen her become impatient, no matter how frequently we ask the same questions. Her philosophy seems to be that if guests lack knowledge, then she needs to fill in the gaps. Michelle is tuned into the fact that everyone learns in different ways and at different rates of speed. The selection of fabric at Fabric Affair is of high quality, yet sold at very reasonable prices. Although limited space dictates a somewhat modest collection, Michelle carries very beautiful fabrics. I am never at a loss to find just the perfect fabric! Richard provides excellent service for my machines. He has at times even offered very clear and memorable instruction not only for the care of my machines, but also tips for using my machines. The atmosphere provided by Michelle and the staff promotes a feeling of camaraderie among the guests. Fabric Affair is so much more than just a Bernina dealership and fabric store. read more

The Fabric Affair has a lovely assortment of fabrics and has patterns that I have not seen in other stores. The ladies that run the front desk are wonderful. That said, DO not buy a Bernina sewing machine! I purchased a Bernina and I returned it 15 months later because the internal workings of the machine were broken. Bernina fixed it for a cost of about $400. Bernine stated that everything occurred because of the way I used the machine, that the thread was pulled on and the foot was bent. They assumed I has sewn something very resistant. The truth is, I used the sewing machine for basic piecing and quilting. I have been sewing for 25 years and I own a Husquavarna but I thought that I would upgrade to the Bernina. Michelle, the owner of the shop, talked me into the purchase, assuring that Bernina was a highly reliable machine. I was sewing and the machine suddenly stopped. I took the machine in to the Fabric Affair on September 12,2016. I was assured that repairs could be done at Fabric Affair when I first purchased the machine. I was now finding out that this was not true. My machine was sent to Bernina some time in October (I am unsure why it took so long since the machine was at Fabric Affair all this time). Time passed and so did the ability for me to finish Christmas projects. I finally received a phone call (after I had called the shop three times inquiring about my machine). The machine was repaired and ready for pick up on December 9,2016. My machine was gone for months. I called Bernina to find out what was going on during the time that my machine was gone. Bernina informed me that I was not a customer; only the shopkeepers were customers and Bernina would not talk to me. There was no way to communicate with Bernina. The Fabric Affair is a nice shop and has beautiful fabrics. Bernina is not a wonderful company and customer service is non-existent. The reliability of the Fabric Affair to fix your machine and the ability for Rich to communicate to you in a nice fashion is lacking. Buy your fabric there, but DO NOT BUY A BERNINA! Do not buy a Bernina from any shop! read more

The Pros: Nice selection of fabric and large selection of interesting looking patterns and notions. Many machines to try out. They are exclusively a Bernina dealership. Leah, the employee I worked with, was very courteous and helpful. The Cons: The male owner. He acts like women are idiots. He was supercilious, unhelpful to both myself and the employee. He is the main repair guy. After seeing him in action, I have no confidence whatsoever that if I had a problem with a repair that he would come through. And considering that Berninas, as nice as they are to sew on, have a very high repair frequency, that is a big issue. He also tried to give a hard sell. And instead of giving straight answers, he asked dumb questions. "What color do you want" when I asked what the best price on a machine was. I said "does it make a difference?" he said "no"... so what was the point. Moreover, does he really think I am stupid enough to buy a $14,000.00 machine without trying it out? When I wanted to see the manual and try threading it, he acted impatient and sarcastic, was unwilling to help at all when the employee (who had not learned the details of that machine yet) did not know how to help me. The other repair technician, also male, was there and was similarly unhelpful. Perhaps the female co-owner is nicer... hopefully. She was not there at the time. But there is no way I would buy a machine at this store and put myself at the mercy of that rude and condescending man to keep the machine running. So... 5 stars to the employee. 1 star to the obnoxious male owner. 3-4 stars for the well-stocked supplies and fabric. And don't buy a machine there! read more

I'm a quilter and I recently moved to Michigan. I've explored a lot of local quilt shops and the fabric selection in this store is fantastic! In addition, they have great classes, a sewing machine service center and long arm rental. If you are looking for a great quilt shop, Fabric Affair is an awesome choice! read more

They have a fine selection of cotton fabrics, a full line of Bernina sewing machines and all of the supporting materials such as stabilizer and other sewing notions you need for your project. Michelle and her team are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to provide you guidance/advice on your project. They also offer several classes for a nominal fee at which you will learn more about what your Bernina machine can do while you make something -- and have fun with a wonderful group of people.
