I went and did not see any staff for a minute, but I did not mind because I like to just browse Prices were decent and they did have somebody that was going to come read from their book It looks like they have a lot of stuff that they do. They had a huge selection of teenager books which I really liked. If you live in the area, I would definitely make this a stop for your child or yourself. Independent owned bookstore right in El Dorado Town Center on Post Street. Yay!! You do not see a lot of those around anymore. The shop is bright, cheery, clean, and well organized. Cutely decorated in a modern farmhouse style. The books were grouped by topics. The selection was current and relevant. My favorite sections were non-fiction history, current fictional bestsellers, and cookbooks. They were located near the front door. The children's books are in the back by the windows. The tweens and young adult books were in the back right room. They sell also a small selection of mugs, greeting cards, games, puzzles, and women's accessories... various knickknacks without being tacky. The books and other items were not outrageously priced. The pricing was on par to other retail big box shop like the one located across the parking lot. Shop small. They can order books as well for you. Right when you walk in the front door, there is a table offering complimentary face masks, bacterial wipes, and sanitizing lotion. There is a sign requesting unvaccinated customers to wear a mask; which is a normal request for all businesses around here. The shopkeeper was wearing a mask out of courtesy. She was so pleasant to talk to and had the best attitude. She had a genuine sense of joy. The best thing about local bookstores are the events and how they connect the community together. Small, locally owned independent book store in EDH Town Center. Great location, easy to find parking. The employees greeted us when we arrived but also allowed us space to walk around and look at the various book selections. You can definitely find more than books here! They have journals, pens, bookmarks, jewelry, and toys! Very impressed with their children's collection (so many great Titles/Authors/Subjects/Genres) for little ones. So wonderful to have an independently owned bookstore in the area! The store itself is charming, with lots of cute gifts in addition to all the wonderful books. They host various author events as well as seasonal activities. I'm in one of their book clubs and it's been so wonderful! Been here a few times now and rarely walk away without a few books. Not a large store but I usually find something I didn't know about. Staff is super nice and helpful. They also do not over help which is also nice. Coming inside this local independent bookstore is always relaxing. I recently revisited this quaint little book shop and had to update with my continued thanks for this local literary resource. Face in a Book lives up to its name because there is little chance you will leave here without a precious new book to stare at continually. I give props to the ownership. The store is thoughtfully laid out with a wonderful, eclectic selection. I especially like the new fiction and travel books - both of which them have a good selection of. They are nice and helpful, too. If you have any questions, be sure to pose them and lean on the employees for answers to your many book-related questions. It is a small bookstore and most of the titles are newer, or at least new editions, so expect it to cost a little more than the used bookstores you'd find downtown. I think it's well worth it and will always be a returning customer. read more

What an awesome independent bookstore! I have looked books since I was a child and I love little bookstores like this. Right along the main street of El Dorado Town Center sits this hidden gem! You can park right in front, down the street, or in the lot depending on how far you want to walk. Upon entering, I was quickly greeted by the wonderful smell of books and the sweet lady behind the counter. The books are organized by genre with a stand in the front displaying staff top picks. Around the back corner are more and more books! There are some places to sit as well. The store is clean and prices are reasonable. During normal years, I believe they have book clubs and signings as well. I can't wait to come back to add my collection of books, attend some signings and events, and continue to support local shops like this. read more

Such a cute bookstore, clean and bright, with a great assortment of books for all ages. There was a shelf of board books which is the only thing I currently give my toddler. Lots of really cute stationary, bags, cards, bookmarks, puzzles. I got a stuffed cat bookmark that will make the perfect gift for a cat lover. Very Sweet Bookstore In El Dorado Hills SITREP The first time I was here was just a random pop-in while waiting for a friend to join me for a meet-up at the nearby Starbucks. But today was actually a special occasion since it was an opportunity meet rising star & author Anna-Marie McLemore at her book signing for "The Weight of Feathers". THE SETUP Anna-Marie was a special guest on a recent episode of National Public Radio (NPR) where she was sharing some excerpts from her book. It really is very gripping, dramatic, and yet still infused with a sense of the whimsical (ie. Mermaids!). So Anna-Marie was given a great reception here at Face In A Book, and the bookstore went all out to make sure the physical plant & reception were executed well. Even with a large group of people, there were even more than sufficient books to sell to patrons. "SUCH A SMART IDEA!" What struck me was the creative way in which the bookstore helped to prepare Anna-Marie with the book-signing process. Maybe it's just me since I don't ACTUALLY buy a whole lot of hard cover books (this was, in fact, my FIRST purchase in about 3-4 years), but I thought it was clever for the bookstore employee to provide everyone in the line a post-it note with a writing implement for them to spell their name and a general idea of what they would like Anna-Marie to write in the book for each patron. This certainly saved time - and reduced the questions on how to spell one's name. Only, like a ditz, I forgot to write my NAME. This is how legit Anna-Marie was though, she knew how to spell my name as "Michelangelo", instead of incorrectly as "Michaelangelo" (with 2 "a"s). THE LOWDOWN I love the bookstore, and I loved the event today, so I plan to keep checking their calendar and see if I can get back this way again! read more

I love visiting and supporting independent book stores. And it's easy to do at a shop like Face in a Book. The store had an excellent selection of books, was clean, well organized, and much larger than I anticipated. The owner was lovely and we had an in depth discussion about a few of our favorite reads. She was also very nice to let us browse at closing time when we got lost in our love of books. I highly recommend stopping in, saying hi, and buying a book or three. read more

All my life, I have lived near bookstores. Or it has seemed like it, because I come from a family of avid readers, frequenting bookstores since I was a child in India. I have an almost atavistic response to books: I use nearly all of my senses in experiencing them (except for taste. I've yet to lick a book. Give me time.) The feel of the cover, the rustle of the pages as they are turned, the snap of flipping a page for the first time, the roughness of the edges if they are the torn style, the smooth edges if they are gold-tipped, the smell when you stick your nose right up into the binding, the beauty of the cover and binding... it's almost spiritual. When Borders closed up shop a few years ago, I was devastated. That was my local refuge from the home, from the demanding needs of my then infants, my escape into new worlds and experiences. Yes, there were books at Target, but that didn't really count. There was no sense of the almost-holy when you walked through the aisles. So when I heard that Face in a Book was opening up in Town Center (El Dorado Hills), a couple miles from my home, I was thrilled. And I've been a frequent visitor ever since. My children and I go there almost every weekend, and relish the calm, almost sanctuary-like feel of the space. It is tiny, very tiny, but it still imparts that hallowed feel you get when you are in the presence of so much knowledge just waiting to be ingested. The owner has done a fantastic job of incorporating herself into the community, hosting local authors for book signings and readings, book clubs, and kid-friendly events. She also has a frequent buyer program (which I just cashed in) where you get ten dollars off after your tenth book purchase. Prices are not discounted, so if you know what you want, and are willing to wait for it, I'm sure you will Amazon your purchases. And I do that, definitely. I also buy books for my Kindle on Amazon. But I also buy books for my kids here, since I want them to experience what I did, growing up. The tangible pleasure of walking into a bookstore, seeing the visual beauty of all the possibilities in front of you, selecting, touching, feeling the weight of a book in your hands, then the joy that comes from purchasing and walking away with something that will give you hours of escape into your imagination. The masks policy here is ridiculous. There is NO mask mandate in El Dorado county yet the workers won't allow you in with out a mask. My 8 year old has a mask exemption with a doctors signature. That didn't matter. They still would not allow us in. I refuse to support businesses that don't honor children's mask exemptions and right to breath fresh air. They lost our business and we buy a lot of books! Such a disappointment. read more

I've made a number of purchases over the years, including several gift cards to introduce others to this "local" bookstore. I even went back after I inquired about a classic they did not have in stock, and the salesperson assisted me in finding editions they could order from AMAZON! They actually order books from Amazon and charge customers a higher price. read more

Found this gem of a treasured discovery after dining one evening and walking along the street way. The name in itself "Face in a book" is so very clever and catching! There's something sweet and special about ones local neighborhood bookstore where the community can visit and spend time browsing though the book shelves while enjoying the aroma of new book pages and fine creative book covers! There is a wonderful small local author section on the back corner area where the children's section is! I was immediately drawn here and chose a book from a local author who lives in Elk Grove! When I went to purchase the book the cashier informed me of a local author book event at the Face In A Book in a few weeks time! She handed me the flyer and invited us to return for the event. The author was going to be the event and what a treat it was the attend a few weeks ago and meet three local authors who shared their stories with the guests! Sweets n treats with drinks n refreshments were laid out for all the guests and we truly appreciated the gift of time well spent! read more

As we all know the Independent Book Store is a rare find among the mass market shops and Internet super sellers. That's why I love to support these kinds of stores, because I believe they hold value to the fabric of a community. It's refreshing to talk to someone behind the sales counter who has a real passion for the products they are selling. That seems to be the case at Face in a Book. Very cute little book store with a good cross section of books. This kind of place would have normally warranted a 5-star review, but the lady in the store did not even acknowledge us while we were in there, and then seemed to fuss around the areas we had just been looking as though we had messed it up. This is a very quaint little book store with a lot of other little trinkets also available. They sell new books only and, if they do not have something in stock, they will get it for you. The staff are very personable and friendly (shout out to Janice, who is awesome). They also have special events on a regular basis, including visits by therapy dogs so that kids can read to them. I attended an event last night when I was able to meet a number of local authors, including James L'Etoile and Gina Mulligan. They also served wine and snacks and this was a great opportunity to speak with many authors. This is a great little shop. read more

Happened to be a little early picking up my son from an afternoon movie at town center and found this neighborhood bookstore in El Dorado Hills of all places! Warmed my heart to see some small town charm in a place that needs so many more places like this. I came here with two young boys to pick out some books to read and I was amazed by the reasonable prices! The boys were able to pick out two books each and it was around $20, which I find as very affordable. Usually I go to book stores and they are over priced, but I was glad to find a great new place. This place is absolutely beautiful! I have been here multiple times and will be returning multiple times. I adore the magical atmosphere and large swinging sign over the door like its an old English pub. Is filled with light, cozy white cases of bright and wonderful books. Its got such a cozy vibe and friendly staff that are always smiling and so welcoming. They are also very helpful and attentive to any questions you may have with tons of personality.
