There is not a more skilled or educated strength trainer that I have EVER come in contact with!! This is the 4th crossfit gym I have attended. This place is much different then most. Most crossfit gyms do heavy weights, lots of leg workouts like squats and deadlifts, snatches and overhead presses, every single day. This gym does more overall whole body workouts, emphasizing more on cardio then other gyms in my opinion. This is good if you prefer more cardio and less heavy lifting, you will be less pressed to injure yourself. Like all gyms, the coach Ben and clientele are all welcoming and friendly and are a joy to workout with. My advise for crossfitters is always try multiple gyms out and choose your favorite, they are all different. read more

Review from the first week of June: Today was my very first day at FYF and wow! I am loving this place! Ben is a fantastic workout coach and helped me work out the first day to test out what i can and can not do and how easy/hard to work for each routine he also provided a meal plan/diet plan to coincide with the workouts I'm very excited for the summer ahead! Review as of Friday, August 5, 2016: I am extremely thankful for the coaches/trainers Ben, Jacob, Jon, Allen, Gina, and all the members here at FYF. I signed up the first week i was on summer break from college and jumped right in to classes at least 2x a day for 5 days a week, some days I would come by for "open gym" and some days there would be 2 or 3 mini classes back to back. The great thing about a facility like this, everyone here is at a different level of fitness, has different goals, and although the workouts for each day will be the same, the coaching team is fully flexible and adaptable to each person's strengths, weaknesses, mobility, flexibility, comfort level, injuries, absolutely any reason, condition, issue a person may or may not have to perform certain aspects of each set of the workout. All the trainers have their own unique touch to the workouts, but each person is also very knowledgable, active, and creative when it comes to working out, fitness, diets, healing, or anything you may need to reach your goals. I had quite a few obstacles this summer to reach my goals, from vacations to getting into a good diet regimen, (not that I ate like crap before, it just wasn't ideal for weight loss/fit lifestyle) but i was able to bounce right back into the daily workouts. At the beginning, the team has newcomers go light and easy and probably perform different tasks from the regular workout, to test strengths, fitness levels, abilities, etc and once you get in the rhythm of FYF, you can go full force! Throughout the summer, there were only maybe 1 or 2 moments I had an "injury" one being a strain when I put too much weight, another when I had new insoles put in my shoes, but my point is neither of these instances were caused by FYF and FYF really knows and teaches its members how to workout efficiently, productively, and safely. I am extremely proud to say I was able to lose 20 pounds this summer attending FYF, i can run farther and more with a built up stamina, i have a better cut/tone to my body definition, flatter stomach, and have a great sense of my own workouts when i return to school. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this place for anyone and everyone. you will actually be happy to come here and see yourself conquer your fears of the gym and achieve any goal you have. I have been a member of Face Your Fears for a year and feel that it's time for a honest review of my experience. Before joining, I attended your every-day corporate gym where I would be stuck in the sea of people and mirrors participating in the never ending quest for the perfect abs and chest. After a few months I would be left with a gym membership I rarely used, and when I did, it was merely to justify the monthly expense. I wanted a change, something interesting, and not so repetitive. I had heard of crossfit and thought I give it a try. I looked on yelp found FYF(Face your Fears), which was located a block from my home. After speaking with Ben the owner, I was given a free week trial to see if it would be a fit for me. I had expressed to Ben that all my friends had told me not to do crossfit because they stated that it leads to certain injury(yet none of them workout). He laughed and explained that any type of training can be dangerous if not done correctly and supervised. The following week I completed the free trial and was absolutely blown away. Ben is a pro! He is extremely educated in fitness and practices what he preaches. He does not just write up a workout and sit and watch, he is observing your every move and constantly motivating and educating. Being new, I was eager to do heavy weight, yet Ben slowed me down and taught me about proper technique and form. What really caught my eye was the members. One member who is 60 years old has the strength and body of a man half his age. The ladies in my class were so strong they would put most men to shame. The nice part is everyone is so nice and supportive. A year has passed and I am still sore(in a good way). The workouts are always intense and challenging. Ben is always mindful of my pre-existing shoulder injury and changes the WOD(work out of the day) around to accommodate my injury. Before I began I could barely lift anything over my head, I no longer have that problem. I recently went to the doctors for a yearly physical. My doctor was very impressed with my overall health. She told me, "you are in excellent shape, keep doing what your doing." The gym is always clean and the equipment is nice and always being updated. The culture their is positive, no attitudes or big ego's. The other trainers are all very nice and knowledgeable. The real testament to this gym has been the gains I have see with my overall strength and endurance. Ben designs his workout with a purpose and a goal...make you stronger and better. I recently was explaining one of the workouts to a friend who replied, "what are you training for...the zombie apocalypse?" I smiled and replied, "my goals have changed I no longer just train to look good. I've been going to FYF Athletics for 3 months now and feel that it's worth sharing my experience to hopefully help others is making the decision that I did in signing up with Ben. I've been a physical therapist for 23 years specializing in sports medicine and orthopedics. I had definite criteria that needed to be met in order for me to choose the gym that I was going to invest time and money. I went and interviewed most of all the "Cross-Fit Training" gyms in the area. All the trainers had certifications, but that doesn't define their experience, understanding of program design, kinesiology, movement science and overall protecting the client from sustaining an injury during their workout. Ben exemplifies his understanding of all that I have mentioned and he's also had experience in working in a physical therapy clinic, which gives him a sense of rehabilitation and exercise modification as pertained to the particular client. The gym isn't overwhelming in size, equipment is in great shape and Ben, as well as, all the other trainers are doing it right with cleanliness. He has the clients wipe down the equipment with sanitizing wipes when they are done. I wanted a work out that was going to challenge me and being in my 50's age appropriate. Ben has been very supportive, encouraging and showing me that I'm capable of doing more than I thought I could do. The workouts can be challenging, but so worth it. I'm tired after a workout, but feel great! During the classes, he's attentive to everyone for proper exercise technique and spends the time with you individually as needed to be able to do it correctly, not only for one's safety, but to maximize the benefit of the exercise. My goals are to be challenged, stronger, tone, get some muscle definition and lose weight, which are progressively being attained. Many of the FYF clients have been members of this gym for a long time, look great, and there's something to be said that they keep coming year after year. They too, are welcoming, supportive and encouraging. You won't feel neglected at this gym and you will develop relationships with others that help keep you motivated and keep coming. GREAT GYM! I have been coming to Face your Fears for over 6 months now and have lost so far 12 lbs! I have never been a gym person, but this works for me! The teachers here are great and will work with you no matter your weight, size, or fitness level. I went in knowing nothing and couldn't lift much, but now with their help I am lifting almost 30 lbs and deadlifting almost 100 lbs!! I just about passed the one-year mark with FYF so this review is LONG overdue. Being part of this community has been one of the best experiences that I have ever had. Not only are all of the coaches extremely helpful and caring but everyone else in class will cheer you on and give you as much support as you need. I've had lingering shoulder problems (rotator cuff impingement) that had prevented me from doing intensive workouts for a few years. No matter what I did, it just wouldn't get any better. Ben took the time to talk to us when we first entered and made sure to modify any workouts and make adjustments specifically for my shoulder. He also gave additional things I could do to help rehab my shoulder and within a month or two my shoulder was as good as new. Over the course of the past year, I've met so many new awesome people who have pushed me to train harder and encouraged me to continue pursuing new goals. I never write Yelp reviews but reflecting back on this past year I realized how much this gym/community has impacted my life for the better and I hope that other people see this review and at least give it a try! I have been a member of Face Your Fears Athletics for 9 months now. Before joining, I was overweight and uncomfortable with my physique. Also, I had no previous athletic experience at all. It has since then been a long journey for me in terms of fitness and truthfully, no gym has motivated me more than this one. At the beginning of my journey, it was clear to see that Ben and his staff were not there just to tell members what the workout of the day was; but, they were there to help each member improve in their own subjective ways. From the very start and to this very day, the coaches and their programming of the workouts stress safety rather than chasing large numbers. I know this from experience, because I started from the very bottom- learning to perform the lifting techniques correctly using a PVC pipe. Yes, a PVC pipe. I eventually graduated to the 15kg barbell and then to the 20kg barbell. So on and so fourth. This proves that this gym values safety above all. Though I wanted to lift heavy weights to feel more on-par with other members, this experience made me realize just how important safety is to this gym. But don't get me wrong, once the technique is mastered, we are striving to be stronger each and every day. Though each class is a group class, the instructors work with each individual and cater to their individual needs/limitations. It honestly feels like having a personal trainer. It is a beautiful thing to observe and train with many different body types and walks of life. The instructors realize and respect that we are all different. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. They incorporate these elements into helping each and every member succeed. The amazing thing about this program is that the workouts actually make sense. After the workout week, I honestly feel that my whole body has been worked. There is a void left by working out alone and the uncertainty of working out correctly, especially for someone like me who didn't have any previous experience at all. I'm happy to say that having a community and having the instructors has filled that void. I am always motivated to learn more and improve here. With the diversity of members, (in terms of body type, personality, profession, etc.) it is clear to see that this gym is a safe place- free from judgment. Since day 1 of my journey with this gym, I have gotten nothing but overwhelming support and motivation from my fellow gym-mates. We suffer (for lack of a better word) through an hour, sometimes more, of training- why not have fun together while doing it? We train as a family and we have fun as a family.The essence of this strong community pushes me further and further each day. Lastly, it is needless to say that since being a member of Face Your Fears Athletics, I have been in the greatest shape of my life. The numbers truthfully don't matter. What does matter is that now I am comfortable in my own skin and have developed a love for physical activity and fitness altogether. It's an exciting new lifestyle for me. Before coming to this gym, I felt that was unattainable. I honestly have so much more to say about my journey and the blessing that is this gym, but I won't write my biography on Yelp. I've been attending Face Your Fears for almost 7 months now. I have always worked out and had done Crossfit before, but after having my daughter nearly three years ago, I struggled to keep weight off they way I used to. When I came to this gym, I was overweight and had lost motivation. I decided I needed to do something though, as I couldn't just throw in the towel. So I cancelled my gym membership at another popular gym in the area and joined this one. In the first month, just from the programming alone, coming about 3 days a week, I lost 10 pounds. More importantly though, Ben and the other members of the gym helped reignite my drive. I felt motivated again and I was seeing good results, which motivated me even more. In January we started a "challenge" and by the end of it I lost another 16 lbs. Aside from the weight loss, I've also gained strength, changed my body composition, and improved in all areas of my performance. No matter what anyone else says, I believe Ben is the best of the best. He really thinks through his programming and works hard to craft and tailor workouts with a rhyme and reason, and if you show up and work hard, the results will show. There has been a lot of chatter on this Yelp page about the members not being supportive or rude, but I couldn't disagree more. Everyone I have encountered has been friendly, welcoming and encouraging. I have been a member at Face Your Fears Athletics for 8 months now and I feel like that is plenty of time to share my view of this gym and confirm how glad I am that I found it. I have tried many of the gyms over the last several years and the owner and head trainer Ben is by far the most committed and knowledgeable trainer I have come across. Educational background and experience were something I specifically looked for this time around and Ben met those requirements. When I first dropped by the gym just to check it out I was welcomed by the other members as well as the instructor and was immediately comfortable. Ben took the time to go over my goals as well as past injury and mobility issues. When you first enter the facility you will notice on a giant chalk board that members write down their own short term goals that they are working on, which I thought right away was a great sign of personalized involvement with each person at the gym. You are not just a member number here. When class begins you know you are being looked after and not lost in the group. If your form breaks down and you need an adjustment you are assisted immediately. If I am having any flare ups from old pains on a specific day and something feels off, the coaches are great about listening and suggesting alternate exercises to give you the best results. It also has to be said that this gym is more like a community. People support and encourage each other in a way that I have not been a part of before. It is not uncommon for everyone to stop what they are doing and cheer on someone going for a personal record or goal they set for themselves. The equipment is in great shape and the entire gym is well cared for and clean. The coaches and fellow members take care of the environment and it is wonderful to go to a place everyday where like minded people meet to encourage each other and achieve their goals. In the last 8 months I have lost weight and changed my body composition. I have gained strength and endurance, and enhanced my mobility. I am meeting goals that I had only ever wished for before. The programming is well planned and the classes are fun, well rounded and challenging. You will work hard and you won't be bored! I am finding more goals I would like to meet and we are laying down the foundation to achieve them every day. Great energy and motivation seem to be a common theme in gym reviews. What makes Face Your Fears different? Ben and all instructors have formal science related degrees and a strong level of knowledge in science and theory as it applies to class design and teaching. They practice what they preach all being accomplished athletes. Ben continues to learn and grow professionally by attending local conferences and seminars. Ben has a strong willingness to implement new information and class design if appropriate. Ben and all instructors communicate very well whether verbal or non-verbal and help build rapport, establish a bond with students and in turn contribute to the successful implementation of classes and class adherence. Ben makes sure our goals and the goals of the classes are headed in the same direction. Instructors great all students by name and have the skills to involve each individual, making everyone feel important and successful. Ben's classes are always organized, start and stop on time and all equipment is in order however Ben is always able to adapt and shift gears giving options, modifications and challenges when appropriate.. I found out about FYF from my client Nichole whose partner Ben owns and operates this little gym. I moved right across the street from the gym and she suggested that I come try. I was SO skeptical at first. A. I'm over weight and NOT ATHLETIC (notice that I used all caps) B. The SCV gym scene is totally weird and intimidating C. I HATE Exercise. D. I HATE exercise. So. Three months have gone by and I am totally drinking the Kool-aid. I LOVE Ben. The guy can get anyone motivated. He's not mean about it either, he just can make you do 60 pullups, and your like "wait, what? Uh...Okay!" I would hire him as a birth coach that's how much I mean this. I LOVE the other gym people who are normal, nice, work their butts off and always encourage me even though I am WAY behind. The people who go to this gym are in great shape but not in a judgmental way. Some of them are 20-30 years older than me and look amazing.. If you show up at the gym you'll know which one I am. I'll be rolling around doing "push ups" ... But don't worry! Ben won't let you hurt yourself. He pays attention, no injuries happening. His other trainers are cool too I'm just partial to Ben because he's gonna deliver my first child. (KIDDING) So anyway. I love it. I love the gym. We laugh, we cry, we sweat and it's a blast. I was training with Ben prior to him opening Face Your Fears. When he opened this gym the population at the previous place plummeted and all followed him to Face Your Fears. I continued to train here with him for about another year or so then had to leave due to financial constraints, which I alerted him and he allowed me to break my contract and without any penalties. Recently I was able to continue back working out here and when I messaged him with a couple questions he responded with excitement knowing I was coming back. Since I've been back he has been completely welcoming and motivating to help me get myself back to where I was when I was consistently coming. The programming here will get you results without causing you to injure yourself because they are very attentive to form and will modify the workout so you don't continue with improper form and limit the risk of injury. This gym is my home! Everyone here is a tight knit group of people that love to have fun and train hard. Coach Ben is absolutely amazing! He is very well educated and has pushed me to be the crossfitter that I am. He is a wonderful motivator and is extremely knowledgeable with body awareness, safety, and complex movements. His WOD compilations are strategically placed throughout the week working multiple areas of the body in a positive challenging way. He also changes it up providing a variety from day to day. His compassion for the growth and safety of his members exudes from his teaching style and it is apparent that he cares and knows each of us individually. I am a religious 7am-er who loves the rowdy group of members that I work out with. We all equally push and encourage one another the reach the next milestone. He modifies workouts per member through injuries and personal growth helping them reach their next goal or milestone so if you are new to crossfit or skeptical to try it, this is the place to start.
