Admittedly I do miss the original location. It is now been razed, and is a steakhouse now. Yet the spirit lives on. Have been here multiple times. They have a good collection of skateboards, surfboards, and apparel. Pricing is quite competitive. A lot of times I go for nostalgia. Yes it's now in courthouse plaza, so it does still take time acclimating. Extremely polite and fun staff here. No snobbery at all, which can be an issue at other places. I met the owner and one of his daughters. They were well informed about their products and pleasant to talk to :) I'm beyond impressed with the daughter being able to run the store with so many different customers asking for help. Everyone was excited and happy with their purchases that day, including myself. Then the owner came and talked to us individually which made me feel even more welcomed in. Everyone there is very knowledgeable about all the boards. They gave me a free T-shirt and stickers. My cousin went to the shop as well and told me about her great experience with a different worker, so it definitely makes me feel comfortable talking to anyone there the next time I come in :) read more

I have never skateboarded before, but I wanted to get one so that I can retain my snowboarding muscle memory and practice some simple snowboarding buttering tricks on a skateboard. Since I knew nothing, I have decided to visit a local skateboard shop for help. Theo and Joan were wonderful. I explained to Theo what I was looking to do and he recommended cruiser boards and longboards. I didn't buy one immediately. Instead, I went home with the knowledge and did some more research. I went back for more questions and tried standing on some decks to see how they feel under my feet. On the 3rd visit, I presented some choices with cute, feminine graphics, but they turned out to be of the wrong sizes for me. Joan then searched for a good size with a cute graphic design from Almost. They were both so wonderful and patient! When I went pick up the deck and got it assembled, I had difficulty choosing the appropriate wheels for me. Theo recommended the hardiness 90a, which I eventually went with. He was right. I already have soft 58mm 80A Wheel on my Arbor longboard, which I got while I was waiting for my Almost board, so there is no point in getting soft wheels for both boards. I went to an empty court to compare both boards. The Almost board with 90a wheels is so responsive. More of my energy is transferred to the wheels. It feels more poppy and nimble. I am really happy with the Almost board whose deck Joan helped pick and whose wheels and truck Teo helped pick. I have seen other customers who have never skateboarded before just picked a board and got it assembled in 30 minutes. I am the type of person who want to understand board design and how they impact biomechanics before I buy. I appreciate that they are sensitive to my need and my many questions. I took my 14 year old daughter to get her first skateboard. She was nervous and feeling a bit insecure about being a newbie but agreed to go to Fairfax because of good reviews. The young guy sitting at the counter barely acknowledged our existence and appeared to be inconvenienced when we asked for help picking out her skateboard. Fortunately, Teo came in while we were trying to decide and took over. He was very helpful, suggesting decks, offering advice about the size of deck, suggesting where she could find a smooth surface and gentle ramps to start learning, telling us about available skating lessons, etc. If Teo had been the only staff we dealt with, this would be a 5-star rating. If he had not taken over when he did, we would probably have gone elsewhere and this would be a 1-star review. read more

Surf shop basically in name only. Maybe not surprising since it's not close to the coast. Then again, East of Maui has a shop in Annapolis that is much more of a surf shop and that's not on the coast. Staff member said they don't sell enough surfboards to have a bigger selection. Fair, I guess. Some shops choose to build out to associated sports like paddle boarding in those kinds of situations - something that would be more viable in a non-coastal area. Not this shop. Also, limited to zero gear associated with surfing (wetsuits, bags, etc.) is available. More of a skate shop with a small but decent selection of boards (longboards and regular) and hardware. A small, less than exciting selection of snowboards was also available. Limited apparel and associated gear. Disappointed overall. read more

Horrible experience with this company! They are also the owners of Ski Travel Unlimited!!! Our kids who are attending one of their Ski trips are stranded in Albany, New York after their bus broke down at 1am for a two and a half day ski trip in Quebec. Company had no back up plan and our kids ended up sleeping on the floor in some conference room. It's now been 12hours and absolutely no communication from the owner. Recorded message at company with no updates. $600 plus for a one day trip???? Already been told no partial refund. Tried to call the company several times there voicemail has not been updated and there's no one there to field phone calls from parents! Our kids are exhausted and us parents are frustrated that we can not talk to any adults. Terrible service experience. read more

I ordered a board for my daughter online... the wheels that were pictured weren't available so the shop contacted me to let me know, texted me pics of options available, assembled the board within an hour and to my surprise HAND DELIVERED to my door the same day! Note the shop is in Fairfax City and I live in Haymarket. I went to Fairfax Surf And skate shop about 3 months ago to buy my first longboard. This review is long overdue. I really want to focus on the hospitality of the workers there. They let you know that this is a safe place to ask questions as a new skater. The man that helped me was so sweet, unfortunately I forget his name so we'll call him "joe". I am 16 and overweight, so as Joe was assisting me with standing on a board for the first time he made sure that I knew it would hold me. Joe could tell I was nervous about that and never once said anything rude about my size:). He set me up with everything I needed to get started cruising. I'd been by this place a number of times but never managed to stop in when I went to GMU... probably because I didn't have it in my budget to buy anything there. I actually bought my board last year from these guys during the springtime when they were getting rid of all of their winter stuff and got a great deal on a board, bindings, and boots (practically free). He actively listened to my son's wants regarding the board, was patient with our decision making, and genuinely seemed happy to take down off the wall nearly every deck in the store so we could check them out. I would have given them 5 stars had the guy who was helping assemble our boards been wearing a mask (the store freakin makes masks and sells them so no excuses there!). I sent my daughter on a ski trip to Quebec through the Ski Travel -Snow Escape side of the business run through this shop. After more than 20 hours on the road, they are still stuck in Albany from a bus breakdown and will lose an entire day of their 3 day trip. Communication has been scarce as the office does not answer their phone and directs you to the few updates posted to their website that hasn't been updated in over 8 hours. Evidently, they do not have a viable back up plan for this type of event. So far, they have not stated what recompense they will provide if any fr the lost ski rental costs and lift tickets never mind the nightmare experience. read more

I previously bought my board, boots, and bindings from here and I continue to go back every year to get my board waxed and tuned before going on trips. Super chill place, with very friendly staff. Went to this shop with an issue after riding my longboard through these snowstorms so it was squeaky. Adam was very knowledgeable on anything longboard related and figured out what I needed to fix it. Came ready for new bushings or trucks and left with everything fixed without buying anything. He wouldn't charge me after spending 15 minutes on my issue so I ended up buying some cool toy machine socks. Definitely recommend this place plus they've been around for 40 years. read more

Adam was amazing!! I went back after 25 years, I used to shop here as a kid and wanted to bring my 9 year old son to show him how great it was. They still had an amazing selection and Adam was wonderful with my son. Treated him with so much respect and really valued a 9 year old's business. He ended up talking him through quite a few skateboard options and made my son so happy! Adam was wonderful and the place has only gotten better over the years.
