They have a good array of clothing and accessories to peruse while waiting on your equipment fixes. They were able to heat mold my boots and insoles as a walk in and even set bindings on my new skis! They're quick to help choose a set of skis to fit your needs (ex: easy vs west coast skiing, strength and skill). Prices are fair and customer service is worth it. I admit I came in just to get my kids fitted for ski boots with the idea of buying on Craig's List. Well, I walked out with ski boots for my kids, so they got me! Lol! Not because of high pressure sales tactics but because they offer a good deal. While they don't sell used adult ski equipment other than at their annual swap in October, they have a junior program where they DO sell used equipment for kids at a reasonable price (eg, $50 for little kid ski boots) and let you trade them in within 12 months for half the price you paid (eg, $25 for $50 ski boots). With kids outgrowing their shoes so quickly, it's hard to say no to a deal like that! The salesperson I worked with was great too. He actually said he used to own his own ski shop before he started working here, and since they don't work off commission, he was honest and didn't pressure me too buy. I'll be back! read more

The name can be misleading. They definitely sell winter sport clothes, ski, and snow board equipment but they have other sports equipment available. They are located near Artie's in Fairfax. Cameron's chocolates is around the corner! I went on a Saturday morning and it was a bit busy. The cashiers will look at you but won't welcome you or greet you. It took a while for us to get a hold of an associate or get staff to even acknowledge us. Bc However, when an associate finally gave us the time of day-- he helped pick out some snowboards for us and took time to explain some different styles. I think we got really lucky with this guy. He had to help other customers as well, understandable since it was busy. The extra star was because of his kindness and attentiveness. I love this store. It's been here for years, and they've taken a lot of my money. Right now it's heat and thunderstorms, but soon enough the slopes will reopen. The Atomic Izor TI skis I bought from here are wicked for speed and turning. Being a relatively intelligent thrifty guy, I got a great deal on drab green bracketed Salomon boots. Here they were $100 cheaper than anywhere else. Do I care that they don't color coordinate with my red skis? Nope as I ski to ski, not to be seen like the Kevin's and Karen's do when they are at a resort. Got my poles here for a fair price, but what makes the biggest difference is their customer service. These men and women are experienced. They won't be doing a google search, when you ask about ski equipment. Yes they sell snowboards, but I'll overlook that transgression. They also have a lot of other sports equipment. Their jackets and winter gear are rather expensive, but you are getting quality products. It's best not to be on top of the mountain going "if only I." Here they will have you squared away. It's a fun shop, with good folks and an incredible selection. read more

We called ahead (since they're about 50 minutes outside of the city) and the gentleman who answered the phone was knowledgeable about skis and very professional. They take good care to answer all your questions and give suggestions based on what they know. Its great to be able to demo their rackets. Be careful if getting a racket restrung at this shop. I took a lightly used racket worth just under $100 into this store for restringing. The racket was broken during the restringing process performed by the store employee. Since the racket was lightly used, I figured it would be more than fair for me to receive $50 in compensation from the store for the damage. While I asked for $50, the store declined to pay out of pocket for the damages. Instead, the owner offered to sell me a racket for roughly $50 off the retail price. I declined the offer because I would have had to essentially pay the difference between the retail price of a new racket and $50 and I did not want to spend money on a new racket regardless of the cost. There was no disclaimer or advance notice given to me about what happens if the racket breaks during restringing. My guess is that without a signed disclaimer that the store is ultimately responsible by law, however, it's not worth it for me to pursue further due to the small amount involved. I'm giving a rating of a 2 instead of a 1 because the owner was friendly, was willing to discuss the matter, and let me keep for free roughly $25 in string that the store successfully strung on another racket. Overall, I was disappointed with the experience and I now have one less racket than when I went into the store. read more

I have never skateboarded before, so I really wanted to shop in a local store to buy right the first time. Adam was incredibly patient and friendly. I told him I needed one to help me retain my muscle memory for snowboarding riding and some easy tricks. He recommended two Arbor boards to try. It was a very different sensation, so I didn't buy one right away. I went home and researched more before I went back to the store. I veered away from his recommendations at first, but after trying 4 different boards for about an hour or more, I ended up buying one of Arbor boards that Adam recommended. Haha. Adam wasn't there the day I bought it, but other staff answered my questions and left me try the boards to my heart's content. If only I had listened to Adam the first place, I would have saved a lot of time. But going from the length of a snowboard to a "longboard" that is actually quite short by comparison really took some rewiring on my muscles. I love my Arbor Axel Serrat! It turns smoothly like a butter! Very stable for beginners. Can turn on a dime in a short radius! I have also learned to pivot on this board. Love it! But from a local shop and buy it right the first time! I have also bought two snowboard helmets here. I had a concussion wearing the first one and was worried if the helmet was still good. I brought in the helmet for them to inspect and informed me of Giro's "one impact" policy. They gave me a 20% discount and I bought a Smith. Peace of mind. Thanks, Alpine Ski Shop. There's a reason why this company is sportin' a straight 5-star rating and that's because they deserve it. See, I'm a snowboarding noob (see: Jerry). You can typically find me halfway down the mountain, hands up in the air cursing the almighty being who created snow. But my goal this year was to not be an embarrassment to my family. I took to Alpine Ski Shop because I like their acronym, and walked in with wide eyes and a promising outlook on not being terrible this winter season. I wish, WISH, I had taken those memory pills they used to advertise on WTOP, but I didn't so I can't remember the chill sales dude who didn't even try to sell me anything and yet I spent nearly a grand here. RULE OF THUMB: these guys are experts, you (and I) are not. Take their recommendations as Biblically inspired and divinely spoken. A SIZE NINE IN REGULAR SHOES DOES NOT A CORRECT SIZED SNOWBOOT MAKE. I didn't believe it, but after walkin' around the mountain in my size 8's, I can say I'm so glad I listened. This was our favorite ski shop in the area - until our most recent experience. My daughter and I travel from MD to VA to get our equipment there (I bought my skis there, and my daughter gets her equipment there every other year (used/new, whatever works out best - their trade-in program is great). In the past, they have accommodated our requests for same-day service (binding adjustment). On our most recent trip to the A.S.S., I asked the guy who assisted us (very nice guy who had just relocated from CO) if this was possible again this time. He said he'd ask his manager, which he did. Manager comes back to the service area and says: "We have been doing this for you the past several times, but that's not how it works. You can pick up your daughter's skis next week". I had no expectations that it could be done the same day, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask (we had errands to run in the area), but the manager's response (not what he said, but how he said it) was very unexpected. I wasn't rude when I asked if it was possible (at least I don't think I was - I was born and raised in Austria, and I don't necessarily sugar-coat everything I say), but I'll also be the first one to apologize if something I say is perceived as rude. So, all in all, our most recent experience with the A.S.S. was just...well....MEH. read more
