I have a French wine tasting party coming up so I stopped in to check out their French cheeses. Heather assisted me by pointing out their selections and offered tastings. I was able to make some decisions about which four cheeses to have included on my medium platter for the tasting. They include Comté, (cow hard) Ossau Iraty (sheep semi soft), Munster (cow semi soft) and perhaps a goat cheese that they may get in during the next few days. We recently visited this lovely shop to look for a particular cheese and also get some ideas and expand our knowledge of some different cheeses. The store is set up beautifully with so many unique items, from mustards to tinned seafoods to raclette melting devices. The cheese display case is impressive and informative, each cheese with a card describing it and its source. Really helpful. We were so happy to get to try a few of the cheeses we had been eyeing and Laura's patience and knowledge were so appreciated. While on the pricey side, the high quality and expert knowledge by the staff really makes such a difference in finding what you may be looking for. They also offer cheese classes and other events which sound fantastic (check their website). We will be back and I definitely encourage a stop in. Went here only once, and it seemed ok, a good selection but did not carry the cheese I was looking for. It's a small shop, but they do carry a large variety and seem knowledgeable. The counter staff was professional. I'll try it again, especially since it's quite close to Isabel and Vincent French bakery, with the best baguettes to go with that cheese. read more

This is a small, bright, and airy shop with a beautiful selection of cheeses and other gourmet foods (pastas, tinned fish, olives, breads, and oils, etc.). Friendly and helpful staff. Prices are not cheap but the quality is evident. Easy and free parking out front. read more

I like this place, it reminds me of my French cheese store back home. The cheese is overall great quality. However, I am not so sure about the charcuterie. I asked now twice for their mortadella but it does not look good at all. It's always kind of a grey color. The first time I wanted to buy it, the lady who I believe was the owner, looked at it (it was really grey color instead of ham color) and threw it away because it was not fresh. Today, I went in and the lady was not nice. When I wanted to buy the mortadella and saw again the color of it, I decided against it. I asked her if she had a better piece in the back or in stock. She looked at me and said no. She told me that she could just cut the end of it and the rest of the piece is good. Sorry! But coming from France, when meat is this color, you don't eat it. You can have people getting really sick over old mortadella (salmonella etc). read more

Tossing out the 5 stars for this one! Impressive selection and great customer service. Christian helped out pick out 3 cheese and 2 meats that fit perfectly into our plan to have a cheese and charcuterie plate to begin our night-in! They even had gooseberry jam, which is my mother's favorite and hard for me to find. So picked up a jar for her! The best part? They take your contact info and then file your cheese and meat purchases... so that you can always reference them the next time you're back. Super helpful. Definitely a great place and the total cost was similar to what you would pay for much less of each item at a restaurant! read more

This place is a hike for me, but well worth every gallon of gas. Laura had one of the best palates in CT for cheese. Pleasant and oh so honest when it comes to making a selection. If it is not ripe or up to her standards, she will let you know. Beautiful, clean store. All the bells and whistles when it comes to a gourmet cheese store. cheese knives, boards, serving platters, books, chutneys, chocolates, etc. Main focus seems to be domestic artisan cheeses with some power house European heavyweights. Some real hard to get selections as well, if you read Culture magazine chances are that this place will have those cheeses. Hey people, this stuff ain't cheap and do you wanna know why? Because it's not crap. When something is very good, you do not need a lot of it to make an impression. The same goes for cheese of this caliber. Shave a thin piece of Parm Reggiano with some aged balsamic and sliced pears and I'm a happy guy. Overall the pricing is comparable to other gourmet shops. But, understand, if the cheese is $30/lb you don't need to buy the whole damn pound. For the most part, the 3 people I've come into contact with have been knowledgeable, pleasant and not pushy. When I go to Whole Foods, I'm all over the cheese case quizzing the curd nerd behind it. Why would you promote local cheeses when you don't have any? Even the Wole foods mozz? You have one of the best mozz producers in the country in your back yard so why the heck would you have some guy in New York or New Jersey produce it for you. Corporate sucks! Here's a company all the way in Fairfield that has fresh mozz delivered from North Haven to show her local support. Plenty of parking. Easy to get to from the highway. I was having a bad day, and had a choice: either speed home on I-95, or find a few top rated Yelp businesses to check out along Route 1. I'd rather think of fun things than ruminate on what was terrible that day, so the Yelp app pulled up Fairfield Cheese Co and if there's anything to lift a person's mood, it's delicious cheese. And boy, do they have delicious cheese! (Among many other gourmet food items, which are of comparable price, maybe slightly marked up, from larger retailers - but I like occasionally supporting local businesses) I patiently waited while the two staffers helped a few customers ahead of me pick from their cheese selection. A young, adorable girl then helped me out, answering my questions pleasantly and helping me select a nice, local CT cheese to bring home. They were also advertising the handmade mozzarella and ricotta from Liuzzi's, but I'll try that another time. They always have the best cheeses. I love my girls here. They have every cheese imaginable. I love the fact as well they really understand the knowledge and understanding of every cheese. This isn't your typical grocery store cheese they are imports and local cheese vendors. I adore this place and look forward to my trips here. This is a destination shop that I visit only to prepare for special dinners/events. Every worker is more than friendly and they are more than generous with samples. They have a large variety of cheese (which goes without saying), but they also have breads, soups and more. Anytime I visit, I end up with more than what was on my list, but I always enjoy everything. Things can get a bit pricey here, so I carefully monitor my selections and sizes to ensure cost doesn't get too high. read more

We were regulars at this store but not anymore. The cheeses are great but...the meats, not so much. We asked for a certain number of slices of prosciutto - easy, right? Well, not when an inexperienced person is on the slicer. Our 20 slices of prosciutto cost over $80.00. I thought this was odd but I paid and left. At home I realized the slices (which should have been paper thin) were like slabs of bacon - what should have been melt in your mouth delicious was tough as shingles. Inedible. When I related what happened I was told I would be given a makeup package. What we received was made up of mostly fat (which is usually trimmed) and very little edible prosciutto. I felt like this was quite chintzy - mind you we were very long term customers. While we may not get that one cheese that is made on this or that European or Domestic farm, we no longer will allow ourselves to have shots taken at us. Penny wise and pound foolish is how I'd describe this shop. Disappointing. read more

I would not recommend the Fairfield Cheese Company as their Customer Service is horrid, and the owner is rude. We had a problem with a basket which was delivered to our home, and instead of having a polite conversation about the situation (green cheese), he lost his temper and was unruly. I hung up and will never shop there. As consumers we have the opportunity to make choices and the Fairfield Cheese Company is a bad choice. read more

Cheese isn't my thing really but I do love this store. They makes these cheese pastry things (gourges?) that are amazing. They have a great selection of hard-to-find food items. So why do I come here if I don't cheese? Because other people do and sometimes you need to bring gifts to people who do like cheese. This is the place to come. First of all, they know cheese. Tell the owners what kind of cheese the person you are buying for likes and they'll pick out a good one. Second, they're next to a liquor store. Cheese and Wine in one quick stop. I don't do much entertaining so I go to other people's houses a lot. Now usually if you just show up at other people's houses empty handed and then on top of that never invite them to your abode you rarely get an invite back. But by bringing some Cheese and Wine you get remembered as the guy "who always brings us that awesome cheese and wine". If you show up at someone's house party with cheese and wine you could literally never be forced to throw your own parties and thus spare yourself the embarrassment of having people over. Let's face it, throwing a house party is a lot of hard work (cooking, cleaning, the never-ending fear of "are they judging me based on the DVDs I own?) so just always show up to OTHER people's houses with wine and cheese and you will always be invited back thus ensuring a full social calendar. If you are down with OPP (other people's places) then come to Fairfield Cheese and Harry's Liquor to get some gifts and show up to a house party like a gentlemen.
