I have been to the Stratord location many a times and only had a great experience and delicious sandwiches on semolina bread. This was my first visit official stop at their Westport location. The chicken cutlet was terrific, as was the fresh mozzarella. The bread tasted like maybe it was a day old and didn't have any sesame seeds on it like I am accustomed to. Maybe I should have asked if that was available. I put in the oven for just a few minutes to get the bread just a tad crunchy and it was fantastic. $14. It is a quality sandwich and most filling. I decided to go to Gaetano's Deli because I didn't bring any lunch with me to work, so why not go try a deli sandwich that started on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, and it's only twelve minutes away. The store is small but packed with fresh breads, deli meats, cheeses, salads, panini's, stuffed breads, and you can't forget the delicious sandwiches. I ordered the Kovac's Special which had Chicken Cutlet, Prosciutto, fresh Mozzarella, Roasted Peppers, and Broccoli Rabe. The sandwich was so delicious and it tasted so fresh. The bread was just amazing. It had great texture, flavor, and just the right crispness. Usually when I order Broccoli Rabe from some places it is bitter but it was not that at all. It actually made the sandwich even better. I definitely want to try there Orange Chicken and Buffalo Chicken because it looks really delicious. I've visited this wonderful deli several times and I've always been treated like I was family. No matter who is helping me, they are knowledge and courteous. The products they sell are authentic Italian such as you would find in an old time Italian neighborhood store. I always ask for the Pecorino Romano to be grated and they are so accommodating! They carry a wonderful cheese with black peppercorns that I simply cannot get enough of. Their prepared foods are superb for those nights when I don't feel like cooking. I could go to an Italian deli very close to my house but every time I ask for the cheese to be grated they act as if they're being put out. I would rather travel the 20 minutes it takes for me to go to Gaetano's than go to one much closer. If you want excellent Italian products and outstanding service this is the deli for you! read more

Gaetano's in Stratford used to be tops. I live nearby so go there occasionally. The bread is no longer good, more like a roll you'd buy in the supermarket. The staff has changed and no longer give you that personal touch. Last two orders lacked the usual balsamic or oil and vinegar, and didn't ask if I wanted it or if I wanted the sharp cheese or regular so by the time it was ready, it was too late to ask. I might as well go to Subway or Jersey Mikes if I want an ordinary sub on mediocre bread. Sorry folks. You used to be great. If there's one thing I've learned from driving out of my way to Connecticut's many, many local gems, it's that it's never too late to make an institution your own, no matter how far away it may be. All the corners of the state feature eats that are near and dear to my heart and heart valves, and to them I delightedly add Gaetano's of Stratford/Westport. This is one instance where I don't feel compelled to give a long-winded review - the photos really speak for themselves. This newer Westport location is just a class act, and I have every reason to believe that the original Stratford location is equally superb. In addition to my sensational grinders (and, oh my, that eggplant was some of the best I've had), there were various bins and piles of alluring food behind the counter, including an eye-popping, glistening pyramid of Buffalo chicken. They handed out samples, and the samples did their job: I walked away with an unnecessary-but-totally-necessary container of the stuff. Well done, folks. I imagine they'll make whatever custom order you want, but I exhort you to first try some of their creations from the menu. You really can't go wrong, and, like me, you may end up getting more than one sandwich merely for the sake of sampling! read more
