Lazlo and his Hungarian Meat and gourmet food shop really brings you back to the great specialty butcher shops of Eastern Europe. When you park your car you can smell the meats being smoked. My husband is German so we go for the Weiss wurst, but we frequently get the mild spicy, smoked to perfection, homemade sausage links hanging behind the counter. His hotdogs pop when you bite into them! We have tried some of the salami, and it is WONDERFUL!. Premade delights are in the fridge. He carries a large selection of Hungarian spices, noodles, crackers and condiments. It's amazing all of the wonderful products he fits into this relatively small shop. We just want to try it all! Outside it says Hungarian Meat. I had to check it out. If you love Head Cheese, this place got it. And their fried bacon was delicious. I had a meatloaf sandwich with a bit of honey mustard. They have all sorts of meat and sausages. They had samples out and the sausage is sooooo good. I wish it was closer to Groton. read more

The Hungarian Meat Emporium has the best hot dogs anywhere. Once you start buying their hot dogs, it will be difficult to buy any other hot dog that you find in the grocery stores. They have regular beef/pork hot dogs that are excellent, but the ultimate are the veal dogs. The only downside is when they're sold out of veal dogs. And if you're buying hot dogs, they also sell fantastic sauerkraut. Just be warned, once you start cooking their veal dogs, you'll never be satisfied eating any grocery store hot dog. Besides hot dogs, they have an outstanding range of fresh and cured meats and sausages. My favorites include the fresh kielbasa and andouille. They sell slices of meat loaf and fried pork chops for sandwiches. You can buy them to make your own sandwiches or you can buy a sandwich at the store. Finally, as a "foodie", they have a lots of other items that you might be interested in for cooking including rendered duck lard, rendered mangalista pork lard, pickles, hungarian paprika in bulk, and lots of other eastern european items to try. read more

I love this place. My favorite foods: the fresh uncooked kolbász, and hurka. Also love the smoked dried kolbász, the smoked paprikás bacon, smoked ham hocks and pigs feet, and every now and then (when it's available) the liver pâté!!! I use a lot of these to give flavor to stews, soups, and various cooked meals in a Hungarian style. I save the fat and use a tiny bit to flavor eggs or sautéed onions, etc. It's heaven. Per DR's orders: I must avoid gluten at all cost; and, Laszlo takes care to point out those foods that are safe for me. Seriously. I wish it was full of patrons, and a line out the door every day. The stuff they make there is so good- I really feel like I'm eating back in Hungary. As a Hungarian who misses terribly those flavors, and who has been jaded by other "mail order" company's quality, I can say this is the real deal. A tiny Hungarian market. Not many items. But they have the Pick's Hungarian Salami (from Hungary)

I don't understand how this place exists. Not here. It makes no sense. But I'll take it! The "Meat Emporium" is, as far as I could tell, sort of a deli/sausage shop with a kitchen in back. I got a breaded pork cutlet sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mustard. It was enormous. And get this: the guy literally has a tomato, an onion (white), and a head of lettuce sitting in the case, and when you order something, he slices up what he needs and puts the rest back. Next time you go to a standard deli, pay attention: no one does that. It takes extra time which most delis don't have, but the difference in flavor between a freshly sliced vegetable and one that has been sitting pre-sliced for a few hours is enormous. The sandwich was awesome. They also had a few other things on offer that made me smile: seriously, two different kinds of head cheese (garlic and paprika)? This place rules. The hand-made sausage offerings are impressive as well. I'd never heard of a number of them, so I asked for one of the big, pale Hurka sausages. I guess it's made from pork (particularly the liver) and rice. All I can say is: wow! It was absolutely amazing. I served it with oven-roasted potatoes and onions; everyone loved it. Supposedly the star of the show is their goulash, which I didn't get a chance to try. I guess that's what goes on in the kitchen in the back. But if the rest of the food there is any indication, I'm sure it's amazing. So I guess I'll close with a warning: this is one of those places that adventuresome eaters will be thrilled to discover, and one of those places that more mainstream crowds will probably be repelled by. If you're one of those people who is willing to try anything, even if it's weird, as long as it's delicious, then give this place a try. If you're one of those people who gets nervous and frustrated when you walk into a restaurant and they don't have anything you've eaten before, then don't say I didn't warn you. But for my bit, this place is exactly what I'm hoping for when I wander into a strange place in search of lunch. read more

OMG! I visited my hometown Fairfield for a few days and happened upon this shop. It has all the delicious Hungarian products I grew up on and can't find in Alabama. I got an ice chest full of sausage to take back to Alabama. So far I've tried the spicy smoked dried country sausage and fried pork rinds. Seventh Heaven! I can't wait to try the other sausages, as well as the goulash and stuffed cabbage. I will be making mass mail orders from this place from now on. read more

All the meat is smoked by the owner. The most dangerous item they sell is the fried bacon! Yummy! Goulash and smoked bacon are our favorites. My husband also likes the pate in the cans they sell. I have never been disappointed in all the years I have been visiting. read more

huge disappointment We drove 40 miles to get to Fairfield Ct. from our home. They were ok in NYC, but ever since they have moved, the quality went down. I made a mistake last weekend by visiting the store, spent $156 only to find out when we got home that the chocolate covered cherries (konyakosmeggy) were expired (over 6 months) and when we tried a piece, it had gone bad and the liquor had dried up. I tried a pogacsa (roll) in the store, it was hard (stale) and the owner still charged me for it. In general, the owner is very unaccommodating and does not understand basic customer service. The best advice is to order your Hungarian foods directly from Bende, and save money and aggravation read more

They offer a great selection of Hungarian meats and sausages as well as prepared foods like chicken paparikas and stuffed cabbage that rival my mother-in-law's Hungarian home cooking. They also offer Hungarian desserts as well as traditional Hungarian cooking ingredients and supplies. The quality is unsurpassed and consistent, and the prices are quite reasonable. This is the only place I know where you can go and and get fresh gound, dry poppyseed for the poppyseed rolls I make around the Xmas and Easter holidays. However, they offer a fine selection of imported canned/jars/boxes of great stuff - beets, mustard, jellies, sauerkraut, rice, pasta, candies, sweets etc. They smoke some meats on site and walking into this place just makes your mouth water for the goodies! Smoked or fresh Kielbasa of various styles. Lunchmeats that look and taste way better than a supermarket deli. Always a sampler plate of some meat product. Oh my, those bacon biscuits are SOOO Awesome! I have had goulash from the pot near the register - highly recommended. This store is smallish and the prices might be a bit higher than at a box supermarket, but they offer something for you to enjoy and the owners are very nice too! read more

I haven't actually been to the location of this business, but I purchased Debrechi sausage at Adams Fairacre Farms, in Newburgh, N.Y., and the label says it came from here. I've never heard of Debrechi (or Debrechers, as the more common name apparently is), but I liked them, and I'll have to get more. I hope Adams will carry more products from Fairfield Meat Emporium. read more
