The Amtrak employees are AMAZING. I've now taken several trips with this same crew, from DC to Baltimore to New Haven. They are SOLID people you feel safe with. For example, I fell asleep once and missed my stop. The conductor/employee helped me off and to find the train to get on to get back to my intended destination. This time around, the employee/conductor told me that I could get off in CT at State Street, which is what was on my ticket, but I would have to stay on the train much longer because they would have to turn around and re-align the trains. He gave me the tip that most passengers get off at Union station (SO close to State Street, it's a negligible distance). Then he took enough care to come back by again to tell me that Union was the next station if I wanted to get off. The cafe car was also wonderful. His credit card machine stopped working. I told him that I had cash, but made the joke that I didn't look forward to walking the LONG walk from the cafe car back to business class to get that cash. He offered to COME TO ME to get the cash later, and he did! Tipped him majorly! Business class is more expensive than coach, we are talking two to three times the price, but you get to choose your seat. On this particular line, it's never been full and I've never had anyone sitting next to me. It's worth it to me, but for some, it may not be. Cafe car has plenty of drinks and snacks. Sandwiches, cheese and cracker trays, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Nothing fancy, but gets the job done. But I can't get over how these guys have seemingly looked out for me and taken care of me on my many trips up and down the rails.

I am shocked after reading this review of T&A Tours and its owners. I have traveled on many trips…read morewith T&A and have always been extremely pleased with everything about the tours. I have dealt with the owners, as they are the only ones who take reservations (not an agent) and they have always been quite pleasant and accommodating. Actually, I was on a trip with them once, and some people had missed the bus going to the location of the tour and Tim, one of the owners, actually got in his car and drove those people to the rest area where we stopped for coffee. Anytime that I have been on a bus that they had for the trip, the tour director and/or the driver mentioned where we were and not once did I encounter anyone not getting off the bus because they did not know where they were. Whether one is in the front, middle or rear of the bus, people have always known when they reach their stop. In conclusion, I have never dealt with a better tour company than T&A Tours. The owners have ALWAYS been polite, pleasant and fully responsive to people's needs.

Compared to the old-fashioned train station in the center of Bethel, the newer train station has a…read morelot more room for parking as well as a terrific coffee stand. Ticket machines are not to be had at this location. You buy your ticket once you get on the train. If you are heading out of Bethel for a long trip, make sure you say your goodbyes well before the train arrives. You won't get any time once the train gets there. The engineer seems to give a grand total of 10 seconds for everyone to hop aboard before the train started moving again.

Tickets are easy to purchase, and Metro-North trains run frequently throughout the day, making it a convenient option. Food choices are limited, there is a Dunkin Donuts and a Subway. I do like the Subway here for a quick flatbread to take on the train. I like like the old architecture and this station has some beautiful historical elements. The original station dates back to 1848. That structure was replaced by a new building in 1875, which burned down in 1928. Two years later the current station opened. Parking at the station lot or garage has always been available, only once did we have to use a different garage across the street. Overall, we find it easier, more flexible and a much better value to use the Metro-North out of New Haven Union Station than the Amtrak out of Providence.

There is an interesting underground path that takes you to the main station. It is a very small station compared to others in New York City or Philly. There was a small gift shop and a Dunkin Donuts which had a large line. Outside there was a crowd of people waiting for an Uber or the local bus to downtown. It cost about $20 each way from the city. It was only my first time in New Haven so I didn't know what to compare it to. It was a cloudy rainy day so everyone seemed miserable. I would have to come back here on a sunny day to see if there is a difference.

So these guys have a lock on trapping locals trying to catch a train at Union Station. Here's how…read moreit works: You drive to New Haven to catch a train into Grand Central. (The trains almost always originate at Union Station.) So you drive to the parking garage attached to Union Station (Union Garage) as you have for years and years but now they simply close the garage in the morning regardless of whether there is parking available or not. SO you drive to the only other parking garage, which is only a block and half down the street, Gateway Garage (which you will find is in NO directory or parking guide to NH), wind around to the entrance where you are forced to make a tight right-hand turn into the garage--and as you make that turn the posted parking prices are on the inside of that right-hand turn so you don't see them until you are LEAVING the garage from the other direction. So you park your car, find an exit and hurry over to Union Station to catch your train. You return 26 hours later to pick up your car and know parking should be about $22 dollars. Instead, you are presented with a tab of $36! For heaven's sake, that's more than the round-trip ticket to New York 70 miles away! So beware, all, this is a complete trap and utter rip-off! If you take the train into NYC once a week the "bargain" is to buy a WHOLE MONTHLY PASS at Union Garage for $95 because then they have to let you in the garage even when its always closed! "Wow," I said to the poor guy at the cashier booth at Gateway Garage, "more than I pay for parking in Manhattan." "That's what everybody says," he said, taking my credit card. "So what do normal people do?" I asked him. "Sometimes they walk to the office over there and just start screaming," he said hopefully (but tactfully). (Jobs in Central CT are extremely hard to get)
