Our experiences have always been during off-peak hours, and they've always been positive. There's plenty of seating, and the station is clean and well maintained. Tickets are easy to purchase, and Metro-North trains run frequently throughout the day, making it a convenient option. Food choices are limited, there is a Dunkin Donuts and a Subway. I do like the Subway here for a quick flatbread to take on the train. I like like the old architecture and this station has some beautiful historical elements. The original station dates back to 1848. That structure was replaced by a new building in 1875, which burned down in 1928. Two years later the current station opened. Parking at the station lot or garage has always been available, only once did we have to use a different garage across the street. Overall, we find it easier, more flexible and a much better value to use the Metro-North out of New Haven Union Station than the Amtrak out of Providence. read more

This is the local metro north station for New Haven. It is the end of the line where mostly everyone gets off. It was my first time so I followed the large crowds. There is an interesting underground path that takes you to the main station. It is a very small station compared to others in New York City or Philly. There was a small gift shop and a Dunkin Donuts which had a large line. Outside there was a crowd of people waiting for an Uber or the local bus to downtown. It cost about $20 each way from the city. It was only my first time in New Haven so I didn't know what to compare it to. It was a cloudy rainy day so everyone seemed miserable. I would have to come back here on a sunny day to see if there is a difference. read more

We took the train to Grand Central today for a Wednesday matinee. The conductor Paul went out of his way to be funny and friendly. When a family traveling from Amsterdam was confused and got on wrong train he was very helpful. He is known for his poetry and humor by other regulars. I took Amtrak from New Rochelle NY to New Haven Connecticut. I initially chose the State Street station in New Haven, but soon realized Union is less than a mile from State Street and it's not only much more convenient to get off at Union, but Union is a much nicer landing place. Union also offers more options when choosing routes. It should also be noted that on some Amtrak routes, State Street is the final destination, so the train has to turn around and change direction, therefore debarking the train will take longer if you get off at State Street. State Street is a functional, clean station, but there is no inside seating, vending machines, etc. Union is much larger, with inside seating, not too crowded, lots of attendants to help out. Vending machines aren't super well stocked, but they exist. The bathrooms are pretty clean and no lines when I was there. Food is limited--a news stand, a S'barro. I didn't have any food, but stopped by for a cold Diet Coke and the staff were very nice. Escalators work, elevators work, signage is very clear and consistent, floors pretty clean. I have been spoiled by Moynihan in NYC, and the Philly lounge and the Chicago lounge. But the more I've traveled by train, the more I realize those stations are outliers. I visited Baltimore's station several days ago and it was in utter disrepair. Gave me a new appreciation for a pretty "nice" station. What happened to Union Station? I don't go in as frequently as I used to thanks to State St station opening back up or me getting directly on my connecting train. There is a Dunkin, Subway, and Sbarro available. I guess in terms of convenience they work but you would think New Haven would be able to get some better food in there. It seems they've upped security to combat loitering but there's still so much happening and they don't seem to intervene in ALL situations. My biggest gripe with the station, and the reason the rating is so low, is all of the power outlets being removed. In 2024 there should be no reason that someone can't find ONE power outlet to charge up. They used to be available throughout the station but now, according to security, they're gone to combat loitering... Talk about literally moving backwards. read more

Enjoying a day off to explore CT by train. My final destination was Derby/Shelton staring from Union Station. This involved navigating two different trains. The first was the 10:21 AM MetroNorth Grand Central Terminal line, getting off at Stratford and transferring to the Derby/Shelton line on track 4. Initially, I was not too clear on the details of how and where to transfer but thanks to the train employee who explained the part about where to exit the train at Stratford (two cars up from where I was seated) then at Stratford, to walk over to platform 4 to catch the Derby/Shelton line. Thankfully, he was patient and had to talk slowly (he was so distractingly easy on the eyes ). I made it to my final destination with ease and enjoyed my day trip exploring Derby and Shelton. 10/10 would do again. read more

My daughter and I took the metro from Grand Central Station in New York to the Union Station in New Haven, and back. The ride took longer than we had expected, about 2 hours with the multiple stops. The ride was rather bumpy in some parts and I didn't like how they did not show a visual of when/where the next stops would be. You had to rely on hearing the conductor announce in the overhead, which was not very clear. It's a convenient option for transportation that is considerably cheaper than a car rental or Uber, that's for sure. I paid $82.50 for our roundtrip tickets. read more

Since when is it policy that if you're sitting in the station and waiting for your train, minding your own business, that security will come up to you and ask to see your ticket? This happened to me this morning ~5:20am waiting for the 5:32am express to Grand Central. I had just sat down and one bite into my bagel, backpack beside me, and she comes up and asks to see my ticket - what the hell?? I asked her to repeat herself because I could barely comprehend her question. Never experienced this in any train station ever. Allow me to suggest this - until someone starts acting irrationally, we assume they are in the train station to get on a train with a ticket. read more

Very pretty station and they have Dunkin' and Subway inside that is very convenient. The service was pretty fast as well. I think during the day time waiting for trains inside was not too bad, but at night I will be worried, because there's no closed areas for people to wait for their trains. Anybody can access these benches. The biggest problem I had is that one person works there was super super creepy. He was circling around me and eventually seated next to me wanted to talk. He is in uniform so I know he works there. Very creepy guy, freaks me out. He's short, asian looking, and not have much hair. I had to wait for my train elsewhere just to run away from him. The station should train their staff especially teach them it is wrong to harass passengers. If you're young and travel alone be aware!!! I will never go there by myself again. Wonderfully large and historic station in New Haven. I've traveled out of here all my life, and never had difficulty. There's plenty of parking right next door in the garage. The station serves many different rail lines, from Metro North down to NYC, Amtrak and their various routes, and a few others. Cities accessible include Boston, DC, and states like Vermont and Florida (I think!). It's very convenient to have a station with many connections here in the New Haven area. The station is well patrolled at night, plenty of open space and good amount of food options and stores. I'm happy to have this near my hometown. read more

Union Station in New Haven is a nice train station. I've gone here to take Amtrak trains to Philadelphia. This station is not as big as 30th Street Station, Moynihan Station or Union Station in DC, but it is still pretty nice. There is a big, visible board that lists trains and the track it will be on, ample seating and good restaurants nearby. There is a Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Sbarro and other food options. Tasty options! I like to pick up a pizza when going to Philly from Sally's Apizza (which has been described as best pizza in the US) on Wooster Street before going back. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from Sally's to Union Station. Easy drop-off if you take a Taxi or Uber and there are many Taxis waiting outside of the station if you need a ride somewhere. Altogether, Union Station is a nice, clean and convent train station to take the Amtrak from! read more

Built in 1920 this station was shut down and almost demolished post WWII, before the gov't stepped in and provided funding for renovation in the 80's. Since then this has become a transit hub with plans to expand. We took the Metro-North line to GCT, NYC. The ticket window agent was very friendly and efficient and as we arrived during non-peak hours there was no line. Ticket windows for Amtrak & MTA run along the track side wall of the main hall. The 3 story ceilings give this space a cavernous feel. The old style wooden benches fit right in with a 1920 train station and the model trains on top of the wrap around benches add a bit of fun. The station was very clean, in all areas, including the waiting hall, underground walkways and various other areas off to the sides of the main hall. Staff were in the rest rooms cleaning post morning rush hour. On the upper level is a sandwich shop, coffee shop and news stand. Lower level has a sandwich/pizza shop. We parked on site in the garage right next to the station. A ground level walkway connects the parking garage to the station. A drop off area is in front of the building. Buses arrive at the opposite end of the station from the parking structure. Between historic architecture, friendly staff, clean facilities, parking availability and amenities such as car rental and greyhound bus connection, this is definitely a 5 star train station. read more

I felt like Goldilocks at this train station. I live in an area where the train station is TOO SMALL, like two benches, no personality and a coffee cart. Then NYC, is TOO BIG, hectic and way overwhelming. But New Haven Union Station is JUST RIGHT! It's medium sized, has a couple of places to eat, a Subway, a Sbarro, Dunkin' Donuts, a newsstand, a vending area and a snack shop. It's a pretty station! Nice architectural design, lots of wooden benches, big beaclocks, gorgeous ceilings and art noveau décor. The main station was clean but the restrooms could use some attention. Easy ticket machines and windows open for more personal service. There was a charging station kiosk but people were sitting on the floor next to the outlets, maybe put a bench nearby. It was convenient having an Avis rental car office on the premises. Our transition from the train to the escalator to the station to the rental place was flawless. No wait time and easy. While my hubby picked up the car, we grabbed some pizza which hit the spot after a long train ride. As far a train station fairy tales go, this one had a happy ending! Goldilocks approves! read more

Very impressed with this station. It is clean, easy to navigate, never encountered any homeless, and it is a railfan's delight. Amtrak, Metro North, and Shoreline East run regular service in and out of here, and the platforms are always available to walk up and watch the action. There is no such thing as a bad view to see any of it. There is also a big board in the station lobby that clearly indicates when trains are due to arrive and depart. The bathrooms are also pretty clean and seem well maintained. The few eating options are there, but none that seem to please me. There are also rental car options and a bus station for those wanting to connect further into the state and beyond. Main train station in New Haven, there's a u-shaped driveway in the front of the building for pick up and drop-off, with a parking garage directly to the left (NE) of the building. Inside the main waiting area is essentially one large rectangular space with a number of long wooden benches running parallel in the center. Ticket windows/machines line one wall with a smattering of small shops/convenience stores across on the opposite side of the space. The train arrival/departure times are displayed on a large electronic sign-board, and the walkway to trains is right below this display. Down the escalator and towards the right thru a corridor lined with metallic strips, stairways extend upwards to each platform, bringing travelers up to the platforms where they can board once the train arrives. Overall maintenance was pretty standard compared to most public transit facilities, the vaulted ceiling and long benches give this place an air of respectability, reminding of times when trains were the main form of long distance transportation. read more

Excited! The feeling I get when I exit the lower level and I see the Beautiful Clock at the top of the escalator. I have arrived here at New Haven Union Station many times over the years. My Aunt and Uncle from Storrs were the first ever to great me. Naturally my daughter was always with me. I cherish these memories because my Aunt Doris June has been gone many years. There's something about being picked up at Union Station that makes me feel like I'm reuniting with loved ones like in the old fifties movies! This trip was great. My Yelper Friend Jim C. met me. The waiting area is right at the top of escalators. There he was easy to spot in a bright orange Harley Shirt. The waiting area has the wooden seats and they're well maintained. The Station was clean. We easily exited to his truck. This station is so convenient. Easy ride to and from many towns. Grand Central is two hours and as a Senior my ticket was $11.75 each way. On the return trip the circular drive in front is narrow and congested with cabs and cars. A quick exit from your ride and step inside. Across the waiting room are numerous ticket windows. I was directed to Metro North and easily purchased my return ticket. Now here is where they screwed up! I asked which platform. I was told # 10 and pointed in the direction of the escalator. I had minutes to board and rushed to find the location. When I arrived no one was waiting. A train came that was empty and then it left empty. Meanwhile I had about two minutes. There were announcements but due to the train I couldn't hear. I decided to exit out and then heard them give last call for my train at platform #14! I saw another woman running and luckily she knew the station and told me turn left and go up the stairs! I ran and luckily my train was there. Within minutes it pulled out! So my only complaint is the last minute changes that give you a heart attack. I assume they would have taken my ticket for the next train. I really didn't know for sure. In the end my experience with Union Station is memorable. I definitely recommend traveling to and from New Haven Union Station to get to surrounding towns. I may just buy a ticket and visit some sites in New Haven. It looks like a nice historic area to spend a day. I would plan time to get photos of the Station! They have fully integrated the smartphone app into ticketing, so no worries about missing the train because there's a long line at the ticket window. Frankly I'm not exposed to the station itself .. because it's the first stop, I get on the train as early as possible to settle in and wait for it to depart. 4.5 stars. I love this train station. Sure, it doesn't house a bunch of great restaurants, bars, etc. but, it's a nice little slice of nostalgia. Oh, and who says having two Dunkin Donut locations 50 feet apart is a bad thing?! While waiting for your train you can stare up at the lovely architecture and take in whiffs of the franchised subway baking bread. There's also some decent people watching if you're into that kind of thing. I mean, union station is located in "Gun Wavin New Haven" after all. HOLD UP! It takes a lot for me to give more than four stars. I'm very picky about public places. So y'all are lucky. My friend and I go here for our trips to NYC when we'll be near Times Square because driving there is a b-word. Our most recent trip is the reason I'm writing this. I've never experienced security actually do their jobs before so I loved that. Brief rundown: We waited for our Bolt Bus outside and noticed a little hobbit-esque woman walking at us. Not towards us, at us. Like it was her birthright to talk to non-addicts who look like they have money. So she approached us with razor blade sharp upper teeth and bumps/scratches on her face. She gave us the "pity me, I'm pregnant speech." And asked us for $20 each. Not to flex, but I took my Gucci duffel bag and said "we don't have any money, we can barely pay for our NYC hotel room." And she fake cried and went to the next man, and tried to seduce him for money. No offense, but anyone with the lowest of standards would still say no. THEN a security guard CHASED HER AWAY. After she ran to a free shuttle and the driver kicked her off, she waddled away, poor and penniless. The guard walked by us and he sang "she is pathetiiiic". He wasn't wrong. At all. I have a heart, I swear. I have sympathy for addicts. But only if they want to better themselves. If Meth-mouth Mary said she needed money for rehab instead of lying about getting knocked up for meth-money, maybe we'd throw her a dollar. But she didn't, so we still have our coin. read more

I like this Station for several reasons. I like the connections I am able to make, the schedules offer good options. The station is great with all the vintage details, i love the main waiting area and most of the architecture inside. The walk to different tracks is always leaking somewhere, but it doesn't affect my ride and I know staff is always working on different projects. read more

I've done a fair amount of train travel in my life - particularly for someone who doesn't commute that way - and nearly all of it has begun and ended at Union Station. It's home. It's a pretty impressive home. Built as the southern Connecticut hub of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, it was built with a sense of grandeur. The long line of ticket windows reflect the way it used to be done. You can still get tickets there from an actual human being, but you'll also find several automated machines for both Metro North and Amtrak. The food options aren't great. Subway and Dunkin and Sbarro, oh my. The two DDs do help trainloads of passengers board well caffeinated. And they still have a Solari board - one where the letters and numbers flip around on a spindle. Its distinctive chatter is a helpful alert to a change in train status. There's a good deal of seating on old-fashioned wooden benches whose seats wrap around the backs. Model trains recall the glory days of the NYNH&H atop each one. Most of all, it's home: where adventures begin and where they come gracefully to an end. read more

I love this station. It is one of the very few places that brings such peace when I enter it. I have such happy memories here. I mostly traveled through this station in the 90s with my family for a religious convention nearby that no longer exists, but boy those were beautiful moments in my life that I will always cherish and passing through this station was a part of those memories. My parents would always buy us something to eat from the Dunkin Donuts and Subway that STILL exist from decades ago. I would always have a strawberry frosted donut and raspberry sparkling water. This station looks like a mini Grand Central in New York City. The vibe is so peaceful at least it felt that way for me then and in the recent years that I have went back. The most beautiful Train Station in Connecticut. There are several chain eateries within the station, but all are average at best. Nothing else is close enough to walk. If you have an hour to wait, take the Downtown Shuttle to the New Haven Green. From the Green there are several fine places to grab a bite of sit down and dine. The Amtrak and MTA Metro North Railroad offer good service and if ConnDOT and the NHPA ever get their act together they could incease parking at the station. read more

Yanno - it's not everyday that that I go to a travel hub, take a step back and proceed to "ooh" and "ahh" at my surroundings. More often than not, I loathe having to go through excessively large travel hubs because I'm so soured by Penn Station and TImes Square... But sometimes travel hubs can be a work of art like Grand Central or the new Wall Street Pavillion type thing that makes me feel like I've transported to Puerto Rico's San Juan airport... Union Station is one of those travel hubs. It's a Metro North thing and the New Haven lines run through it. It's got a clean Dunkin Donuts, Subway sandwiches, loud tacky Sabarro's (aren't they all tacky though?), clean bathrooms, vending machines, really shiny and well kept wooden pews, tall U-shaped arches that give it an old-timey feel and a beautiful ceiling of bronzey-golden casted and detailed flowers, I could stare at the ceiling for days...if I were into that sorta thing. Getting here isn't too bad as it's near a main highway and they've got a pretty large parking lot adjacent to the entrance and you can purchase tickets with Metro-North ticketing machines or with people (if you don't mind waiting in line). All in all I'm sure I'll be back soon because I enjoy visiting Connecticut with my beau who was born and raised in New Britain/Plainville (not really close to this station, almost a 2 hour drive away actually and practically in New England town, haha!). Metro North to Grand Central station from New Haven's Union Station is the best way to go to NYC. Overnight secure parking at the station garage runs about $22/24hrs or so when compared to NYC parking of $44/24hrs. The train ride is less than two hours and prices at off peak are $30/pp round trip and you can save an additional 10% if you buy a web--ticket. Union Station is well lit and clean making travel safe, secure and convenient especially when you consider that you avoid the inevitable traffic congestion on the drive to the city. read more

Union Station is almost excessively nice for New Haven. The main ticketing and waiting area is clean and open with high ceilings and simple classic decor with plenty of wooden benches to rest your bum before catching a train. Departures are clearly displayed on an old-fashioned board that flips its letters with a pleasant sound at each change. Ticketing is easy, with machines for Metro North and friendly staff to help with other more complicated travel needs. Greyhound/Peter Pan are unreliable, but it's hard to blame the station for that, and the trains are, in my experience, always on time. The food situation is pretty standard, with a Subway and a Sbarro to alleviate travel hunger. You can also buy your magazines at the station and, if you feel so inclined, you can find plenty of information about the City of New Haven. My only complaints about Union Station are that the Metro North trains never arrive more than a few minutes before departure, and that the trains back to Union Station never fail to bring me back to New Haven...I suppose I can't hold that last bit against the place, can I? read more
