And that is why, on any given Saturday summer night, you will find most of the populace on the lawn at the Village Green, enjoying recently-released flicks projected onto a huge white screen (which is also the side wall of a Fairhaven building). The movies alternate weekly, with a kid-friendly movie every-other-week and - on the opposite weekends - a still family-friendly but more PG movie. Sometimes they show very new releases, and sometimes they show classics. It's a great mix! Before the movie (which always starts late, depending on when dusk is) they have live music and it's fun to dance on the grass in your bare feet. They also have popcorn and a limited number of vendors. This movie does charge for entrance, and if you prefer to sit in a chair you better get there early because they aren't allowed on the lawn so you have to find a place on the adjacent concrete walkway (and they go fast).

Originally, we saw that there was a pier and thought to try crabbing here. I don't think this is a pier for fishing nor crabbing. The water depth is only a few feet even at the end - it's quite shallow, not deep enough for crabs or any serious fishing. We tried a few casts anyway and didn't come up with anything, unfortunately. But, it's an awesome long pier walk that really gets you some scenic views at the end of the surrounding areas. Great nature view. You really take the full force of the sun out there, so wear some sunscreen.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, and they've transformed this creosote-scented landmark into a place of beauty. We were lucky to be there on a warm, sunny day. We walked out to the end and took it all in. From views of Lummi and Orcas Islands to the west, Mt. Baker to the east, and even some humongous-looking crabs wandering the shallow depths beneath the bridge, it was a delightful (and free!) way to spend some time in nature.

I was honored to attend this year as a VIP and I gotta say, the bonus perks were nice. We received a HUGE goodie bag with tons of cool schwag - including (bonus!) a tiny bottle of bubbly. Plus we had front row seating for the phenomenal fashion show, which featured local shops and boutiques putting together fun outfits to match a gorgeous handbag. After each walk-down-the-runway that particular handbag was auctioned off to the crowd. One of the bags (a Kate Spade beauty if I recall correctly) went for nearly $700! While the live auction was a little rich for my blood, I did enjoy the endless rows of gorgeous purses attendees had donated, which were marked anywhere from $5-50 depending on their label (and believe me, there were some VERY well-known labels to be found). There was also a silent auction featuring some of the more high-end bags, so basically there was literally something for everyone, in every budget category. (And if you really like a bag bargain, stay until the very end, wink wink.)

This might be some of the best pizza I've had in Washington, and I say that as someone from the East Coast who takes pizza very seriously. While there are a few great slices in Seattle, Fiamma is easily in my top three pizzas in Washington. We've stopped here twice now after biking up in Bellingham (shoutout to Transition Bikes Outpost), and it's the perfect post-ride stop. Grab a brew, order a pizza, and relax. First off, the service has been great both times. Everyone is kind, friendly, and efficient. It's been busy each time we visited, but pizzas still came out in about 15-20 minutes, which feels completely reasonable for a quality pizza spot. The second time we ordered takeout and it was ready in about 10 minutes, which was awesome. One thing I really appreciate is that you can order a medium pizza with two different halves. That's perfect when you're trying a new place and want to sample more than one style. We tried a few different things: * The Rossa pizza (small to-go) - This was my personal favorite. As an East Coast girl, I'm always searching for a good tomato pie and this scratched that itch. I ordered a small, took some home, and honestly... it was amazing cold the next day. If you know, you know. Next time I might ask for a little less garlic and extra sauce, but overall it was fantastic. * POTATO GORGONZOLA & FENNEL SAUSAGE - I'm a sucker for potatoes on pizza. This one leaned a little sweeter than I expected, but still really interesting and worth trying. The rosemary on it was top notch. * Cheesy SQ Pie - My husband ordered this. It wasn't his absolute favorite style, but it was still a really solid rendition of deep dish and definitely worth trying if you like that style. * "Big Kid" cheese pizza - You really can't go wrong here. Simple, classic, and done well. Husband said the sauce is a smidge more tangy than he would like but it's a dang good slice. But the true star discovery? You can buy a pint of their homemade ranch dressing. Yes. A pint. It's $9 and lasts about a week in the fridge and honestly... it might ruin all other ranch for you. There is nothing worse than bad ranch with good pizza, and this stuff is legit homemade and dangerously good. Some people might think buying a pint of ranch with pizza is a little unhinged. I personally think it's a brilliant life decision. All in all, Fiamma has become a must-stop whenever we're in Bellingham. We had steamed clams for starters, as a daughter of a fisherman I can tell when seafood is truly fresh and these were fresh. I had the fettuccine con Pollo. It was very good. I'm going to regret it later...so much cream... my intolerance hates me right now. My husband had lasagna and he claimed it is the best he's ever had (I feel slightly disrespected now, because he always said mine was the best...grrrrrr). There's one dessert that my husband can not pass up no matter how stuffed he is and that dessert is Key Lime Pie and Mambo makes a mean one, so of course we split a slice. Now, I have had just about every key lime pie from Florida to Washington and even in Hawaii. This one was more like cheesecake than pie, that being said- it was pretty dang good. She thoroughly took care of all our needs, especially my wife's food allergy issues. She went to the kitchen TWICE to ensure they could modify the selection she chose, without consternation or excuses. EXCELLANT SERVICE!
