This review is WAY overdue. My husband and I got orders to Hawaii last year. There is a whole list of things you must do to bring a pet onto the island and avoid them getting quarantined. They did such a great job helping me get everything done on time and walking me through it. Once we arrived everything went as planned and I got my pup back right away! Our friend's have been long time clients of FVH. They had been bringing their pets and spending money at FVH for nearly 10 years. Yesterday, they picked up their dog from a kennel and noticed something was terribly wrong. They called FVH and were turned away because they only had one doctor on staff. And because they didn't have any appointments available. The pet died the next day. In all truthfulness, there was nothing that could have been done to save the pet. But I am writing this review because of the callous, thoughtless treatment they received from a business they had faithfully supported and patronized for a long time. Our bulldog had cherry eye surgery today and they treated him wonderful. They came out and met my husband, the nurse and the surgeon and of course Brutus loved them. The vet called my husband after the surgery and told them everything went fabulous. I am very happy with their service and have always heard such great things about this vet. I have a reactive dog. He becomes overstimulated very quickly and will growl and raise his hackles. The staff here has always been phenomenal with him. They are patient and kind. Every time he's been in, each staff member he's seen has gotten down on his level and waited for him to come to them. The doctors always let him become comfortable with everything they do before moving onto the next part of the exam. You can tell they genuinely care about the well being of all their patients. They are also the only Veterinary office to ever talk to me about what we could do to help my dog with his anxiety. His previous vet never mentioned there was any way to help him. I will be forever grateful to the Fairhaven vet staff, they truly changed my dog's life and my family's simply by caring about my dog. read more

I'm not usually someone to write reviews. I actually made a Yelp account so I could share my experience. I just got a new puppy and she had her first puppy shot but needed her second one. On the phone when I called I talked to a receptionist who asked for a lot of information about Coco (my dog's) birth date and all this stuff to see if enough time has passed for her to get her second shot. So I set up the appointment and the receptionist told me on the phone that enough time has passed for her to get her shot but when I get there in person the vet told me she still had to come back in a week for her shot and today they would only do an exam. Which was frustrating because she just went in for an exam with the breeder right before I got her so she was doing good so the whole point of this appointment was to get her shot. Which you would think okay an exam wouldn't hurt you know? So I payed $105 for an exam and fecal sample where the vet didn't even catch that my puppy had a double ear infection. My poor baby couple days later was scratching her ears but you know she had JUST saw the vet so like I was like I will bring it up at my appointment in a week but how could anything be wrong? She was just checked out a day or two ago. Then her itching gets worse and yesterday a week from her last appointment she was itching more so I was like she can't wait two more days. She is in pain. So I call them and ask if they have any time to squeeze me in with a vet and keep in mind they know that Coco is a puppy which is an extremely fragile time in her life and she is more susceptible to so many more things. They told me that actually for Thursday she wasn't even seeing a vet! They only had her down with a nurse for her shot and no one had communicated that to me via the last appointment. They didn't have a vet availability until later that day on Thursday, so I scheduled it knowing that I was gonna go to the emergency pet room that night. Then I started calling around to other vets to see if people had openings and thank God for Banfield, I call and they had an appointment within the hour for me to get Coco seen by a vet where I was informed that she has a deep double ear infection in both ears that has bacteria. Banfield wasn't even my normal vet and the receptionist was so much more compassionate about my situation and squeezed me in to see the vet. I got amazing care at Banfield. While at Fairhaven I felt like my vet thought I was young and uninformed on the breed of dog I have. She would tell me information and I would let her know kindly that I know that and she would continue to just over explain. At Banfield I felt respected and like an equal. The doctor I met with was extremely knowledgeable plus personable and I didn't have that experience at Fairhaven vet. My poor baby Coco now has stuff to treat her ears but I am extremely disappointed in her care that she got at Fairhaven and you would think for a simple exam they would catch a deep double ear infection! So I cancelled my appointments for Thursday and was able to get Coco the shot she needed at Banfield. Overall horrible care and I expected better based on how long this vet has been open and the amazing reviews. So disappointed. read more

I am very impressed with the level of care provided by the staff at Fairhaven Vet. They hadbjust the right demeanor to make my cat, who is very untrusting, allow them to pet and handle her. If you knew my cat you would know how amazing that is, especially when she is out of her home territory! The rooms are spacious enough that they aren't confining to the animals and having staff that know what they are doing really helped make my first visit here exceed all my expectations. Dr Hall, the founder and one of the partners at Fairhaven noticed a sore on the roof of the mouth of one of our dogs during a basic exam He said he'd not seen anything like it before. We are fixed income and couldn't afford the recommended biopsy or potential follow-on treatments for cancer. Our discussion of the possible outcomes was very frank. Dr Hall was very professional as well as supportive of our decision. As a result, we agreed that I would watch the sore. It grew very fast until almost all of my dog's soft palette was involved. He had changes in his coat on the sides of his head. This was an aggressive oral cancer. He stopped eating yesterday, and his personality changed. I was sure he was beginning to suffer. I put him down today. While that is very sad, Dr Hall personally called me to express his sympathies, which was very kind of him. read more

I felt unheard and uncomfortable. Changed vet after 2 or 3 visits. It was very crowded when we were there and we waited a long time.

Recently my experience with Fairhaven vet has significantly deteriorated. The reception staff is less than helpful in emergent situations, and this facility as of late seems to care less about doing the right thing to try to help their pet patients and more about liability and billing. My dog was recently injured, scratched by a cat in the eye and I was 200 miles away from home with no Veterinarian access. I called Fairhaven seeking any type of assistance or advice because they are his primary care facility. The reception staff would not put me through to an actual Veterinarian to get advice, would not attempt to schedule a teleconference of any type, and had zero advice on what I should do in the meantime to take care of the dog. I was told, " sorry the best we can do is schedule you an appointment next week."Absolutely pathetic. Based on this interaction we will not be bringing our beloved boxer Franklin back again. read more

Went to this vet for the first time today because it was close to my apartment but I'm so glad I did! Everyone was so kind and really cared for my dog. They have a really calm and relaxing atmosphere. My dog was so comfortable. The rooms and waiting area are very nice. The vet was also super thorough in his exam of my pup and all of the staff was super helpful and knowledgeable. Dr. Mike Hinckley really cared about finding out what was wrong with her but didn't push me to get things done that he didn't think were totally necessary. I was very, vert pleased with the service my pup and I received here. The receptionists were very welcoming and even came out from behind the desk to greet my new puppy. The Veterinarian was extremely knowledgeable and informative. It was more than just doing a check up on my puppy and leaving. She took time to answer any questions I had, suggested books, doggy daycares, etc. I will definitely recommend them to anyone in the area with pets. read more

Three of our NorwichTerriers have received excellent care at FVH. For example, most recently, a fractured tooth was removed from our newest Norwich. Knowing the anesthesia and vital signs are monitored by one person while another performed the procedure (plus complete tooth cleaning) is both reassuring to us AND a best practice for pets under anesthesia which one doesn't find everywhere. Our dog received outstanding care before, during and after the procedure. We received a superb, clear, informative debriefing -- both verbally and also complete with written findings, photos, radiographs -- which helped us understand exactly what happened, and what future dental care should be. All our questions were answered with attention, patience, and clarity. Special kudos to Dr. Mark Kummar: over the past 20 years we have worked with dozens of Vets in California, Oregon, and now Washington, and he is right at the very top in terms of both expertise and communication. We are appreciative of, and extremely impressed by, everyone at FVH! read more

I cannot say enough positive comments about this place. As a first time dog owner, and my first visit to a vet, they were fantastic! From the front desk to the techs to the vet, all were terrific. Dr Kummer was great, performing a very thorough, kind exam on my nervous dog. I was shocked to see him just drop to the floor to perform the exam because "big dogs often don't like the exam table". Dr Kummer spent an hour with me - an HOUR! - patiently answering all ten of the questions I'd brought. The techs were great also. The facility is nice and very clean. Surprisingly, Dr Kummer commented they are about to remodel. read more

This is maybe the first time I've ever been compelled to write a poor review. After my sweet puppy was badly injured during a routine surgery- being spayed at age one, I was told to bring her back the next day. They were concerned that she would be internally bleeding due to a mishap during the spaying. They nicely told me I wouldn't be charged for the follow up test, which was about $40. I had already paid the full price, over $450, for the "very much not routine" procedure, as it was described to me. I appreciated the gesture, though I was surprised that the vet never showed her face or called to check up. I have since received a bill for the follow up test. I called to let them know it was a mistake and was then sent another bill with a memo that I owed the money anyway and a late charge. read more

My husband and I and pets just moved to Bellingham in October, and a couple of weeks later, our worst nightmare happened--one of our cats suddenly began losing weight and having difficulty eating. When you love your pets like I do, the idea of having something like that happen in a new town, when you haven't had a chance to try out different vets and build a relationship with one, and instead must entrust your baby's life with strangers, is absolutely terrifying. I frantically read through reviews and Fairhaven Vet seemed to get the best. Even though we were new, they made us a priority, got her in for her appointments and then surgery incredibly fast. I'm really nervous about anesthetizing my pets, and they kept me totally in the loop, and made as un-scary as possible. Unfortunately, my little girl's diagnosis was terminal, but they gave us the tools to keep her comfortable as long as we could. We already started taking our dog here, and the vet figured some things out about him right off the bad that the several other vets he's seen never did. We were also shocked to learn our prior vet had been muzzling him when they took him in back to trim his nails--not so here, their fear-free treatment has turned him into a whole new dog at the vet: no more shaking, anxiety, etc. I feel so fortunate to have found Fairhaven Vet and will definitely be using them for our whole furry family. Edit: I want to add (after reading earlier reviews), I also feed raw, and was also really impressed with the response, as pet nutrition is something I'm really passionate about. read more

I'm surprised that Fairhaven Vet doesn't have more five star reviews. We took all our pets here before we moved away, including a dog with bad allergies that they were able to help us get under control in just a few weeks (after months of working with another local vet). We usually saw Dr. Wendy, who is so kind and attentive. Whenever our dogs were in to see her, she would always take time to call and follow up, whether it was post procedure or just lab results. She is definitely the best vet I've ever worked with, though everyone at Fairhaven is wonderful including the techs and front office staff. If you're looking for a vet, you won't find a more caring team than the staff here. read more

We have been taking our dog here for many years. Our dog recently developed bone cancer and the doctors and entire staff at Fairhaven Vet Hospital has been excellent. Everyone has been very gentile, patient, and understanding through the entire process including amputation and chemotherapy. I've been going to this clinic for a couple years now. The reception staff is very kind and supportive but the doctor I have been linked to (Wendy Zawoysky) is an absolute nightmare. I've had issues with one of my critters having severe anxiety issues when kenneled making it a horrific event getting him to and from the clinic. Unfortunately, he urinates on the drive there and defecates on the way home. Rarely, am I offered any help in cleaning up or calming down my terrified cat or dirty kennel while waiting to be seen -as a normal event. If that isn't enough, when I explain the severity of his issues (alpha cat, obsessive/compulsive behaviors, aggression toward the other animals), Dr. Wendy only advises me to re-home him. Who in the heck would dump their animal having behavioral issues like that on another person who will only have the same troubles?! Well, due to that comment, when explaining this to Wendy, she wrote in my chart that I refused to re-home my animal as I consider him my child and therapy animal. Ha ha. Um, what? Correction: I feel my animals to be MY responsibility, just like a child. You would not give back a kid would you???? I just don't find this doctor to be at all compassionate or caring. Last week's visit was the final straw. My other pet, Jaspurr had been straining and unable to urinate, frequenting his box, licking himself excessively, not eating or drinking and feeling to have had a fever over the weekend. I called first thing Monday morning to get him in and was able to nab a 10:00 am appointment. On my way there, I received a call telling me I would have to wait to get in (as my appointment had been given away to another client -double booked). I was informed of that 10 minutes before our appt. I had to take the morning off from work. I went in and upon examination, Dr. Wendy said she didn't think my cat had crystals/stones but that he definitely had cystitis from what she thought was stress -my other (behaviorally challenged) cat. They needed Jaspurr to urinate to be sure he did not have crystals in his urine. I was told to leave him until he was able to give a sample. We talked about medications and treatments. Nothing serious it seemed. I checked in frequently calling throughout the day and still no urine sample. I was getting worried asking about my miserable pet stuck in a cramped kennel all day -as at home he had been trying to pee every 5 minutes! I finally asked to speak to the doctor as I wanted to be sure my pet was fine. When Wendy called me back she was arrogant and uncaring of how worried I was for my pet. I told her I would be more comfortable coming down to sit with my pet and trying to comfort him in order for him to be able to pee. She told me that would be a waste of time and that "he was in the back." She offered to do a cysto and I agreed to this however she then told me my cat didn't have enough urine in his bladder to do so. Strangely, written in my chart notes, I apparently declined this treatment?! I NEVER declined. Anything to help my pet get home and comfortable and I'm ALL IN! Long and short of it, never did I threaten this woman, never did I do anything but sound worried and stressed out over the phone about the severity of what I felt my pet was going through. But by 4pm when I checked in, I was told to come and pick him up and find another service provider as Dr. Wendy decided she didn't want to help us any further. Another um, what?! You've had my cat, kenneled and miserable all day and now that it's closing time, you're going to dump us without medications, treatment, or any other kind of help?! I was irate. I called my father (an attorney) to come down with me to pick up my animal, as I felt I was being "singled out" and "fired" due to this doctor's LACK OF RESPONSIBILITY. I called a good friend and doctor over at Fountain Vet, took my pet there and within 10 minutes my animal peed while in their care. The doctors there were completely SHOCKED that my animal had been sitting in a kennel all day without being given an IV to help keep him hydrated in order to fill his bladder for the sample Wendy said I declined. The results of his sample showed not only cystitis but crystals (stones to a human) 20x the normal "high" for an infection. As explained to me by Fountain Vet, that high a concentration would feel like peeing glass! X-rays were done, appropriate medications given, food changed and kitty monitored for a week indoors! Not only can Dr. Wendy even so much as spell either of my animals names correctly after 2 yrs, she has no regard or compassion for any of us. And I wouldn't doubt, you/yours either. When the going got tough, she got rid of us -and as stated above, when my pet was in SEVERE need of medical attention. Lastly, Mr/Mrs. Lessard. I have your animals medical records. They were attached with the records I picked up for my pets. Don't waste your time here folks! read more

It's been a year and a half since I had the worst veterinarian experience of my life; it has taken me over a year to confront the issues I had with this veterinarian hospital. My dog Rocco was killed by Fairhaven Veterinary Hospital. I brought him in for emergency care due to a supposed failure of his kidneys. We waited for two hours on a cold floor, and then determined a course of action. An action they didn't follow. They ended up flooding his lungs, drowning him. When we picked him up, I was told that they could do a Lasik shot, and a bladder catheter, but they never performed it, and said to me, "well, he is kind of old for his breed isn't he?". They had found out that his kidneys were still working, but his urethra was blocked. So, after taking him to the ER again, we ended up having to end his life peacefully. When I left him at FVH, the plan was to check his levels, but they never did that and continued on a previous course of treatment, giving him 4-6 bags of fluids. They were supposed to check his levels first and adjust his treatment. When I picked him up, he had water flowing out of his mouth. They did refund the treatment costs, but $600 was not what my boy's life was worth. NEVER take your dog there. I perform dog rescue, and work with reputable dog rescues in four states. This hospital will be reported to authorities. Even the ER stated that they never should have performed the treatment that they did. read more

Fairhaven Veterinary Hospital has been wonderful to our pug Annie. Dr Johnson is very patient and gentle and all of the staff friendly and accommodating.
