Quite the experience! From the moment we set foot in the hotel, it was a seamless check-in. The valet was extremely helpful, and they gave you a QR code stub that you can scan on your phone, and they can bring your car up when you are ready to leave. (Heads up, they do have in and out privileges. There was no wait for check-in, and the front desk was extremely friendly, even sending up a complimentary dessert for our big wedding anniversary. We had a parliament view on the second floor, and it was extremely spacious. The gentleman who showed up with our luggage offered great suggestions for nearby places and things to do. The hotel is equipped with a restaurant, bar and a cafe. The cafe offers some cute bits and bobs to purchase as souvenirs. The front desk suggested taking a hotel tour that is offered through a third party (if I remember correctly), and it was well worth it! I learned about the history of the hotel and the events that happened there. This hotel is just beautiful and needs to be experienced no matter what. It is in the heart of the city and just minutes away from the National Gallery, the Senate of Canada, Parliament Hill, Royal Canadian Mint, ByWard Market District and the Ottawa river boat cruise. The impressive 429 room hotel looks like a grand castle on top of a hill. They have a restaurant, high tea and a bar lounge. We checked in and the room smelled a bit moldy probably from the carpet, curtains and bathroom so we requested to change rooms. The next one was much better. Amazing hotel! My wife and I started our 19 night Canada trip here and arrived after midnight so we had to buzz the front desk. We checked into our room on the 3rd floor with a Parliament view that was well worth it. The lobby areas, hallways, and rooms are so nice with a historic castle feel. Only complaint is the lack of outlets compared to other hotels including the Fairmonts in Montreal and Quebec City we stayed at next, but our extension cord helped. The location is perfect and a short walk to Parliament Hill, Byward Market, and the National Gallery of Art. The temporary Senate is also across the street at the Old Train Station. Restaurants were closed but we enjoyed the coffee shop upon checkout. Looking forward to hopefully staying here again. read more

The hotel was amazing. The restaurant, bar. and cafe were terrific. The hotel is huge and very well maintained, carpets, floors, rooms, stairwells and elevators very nice. The staff was very pleasant, friendly, and helpful. The location is central to Ottawa so can walk everywhere. The negative ; upon arrival no valet and was advised of a "parking" issue and needed to self park a few blocks away. The shower in my room had a loose drain cover that kept popping out of place when showering. The bathroom lighting is not very bright. I could not get temperature in room to go lower and was a constant 22* c (72 f) too hot for me and thermostat adjustment did nothing to cool room. As good as it gets in central Ottawa. Located beside Parliament Hill this beautiful castle-like hotel is the best of the best in the capital city. While not as picturesque as Le Château Frontenac or Fairmont Banff Springs, it has an immaculate exterior and the interior is refined. Enjoyed it all. Would definitely return. read more

This is a beautiful hotel and rooms are reasonably priced. It has great proximity to lots of thing to do. The rooms are spacious and the service staff are all very helpful and friendly. It can be a little dicey driving into the hotel as several street converge together at the entrance and there is a lot of pedestrian traffic. I highly recommend a stay there read more

Yikes. What's up with the Chateau Laurier. The hotel rooms are outdated, the staff are not well trained and come off as rude, and the amenities are found wanting. I was very disappointed with my stay at Chateau Laurier and let me tell you why. I've been rather fond of the Fairmont properties and even chose to get married in a room at the Fairmont Royal York. Generally, the service there is attentive and professional. I've stayed at several Fairmont properties and always had a good time. I'm a staunch defender of its price range and always justify the expense with the service I receive. I came to Chateau Laurier expecting the same type of service, but it left me with a great sense of disappointment. The disappointment and frustration started with the check-in process. The lines were long and only one person was working front desk when we arrived at 5 pm on a Friday (should be prime time for check-in, no?), usually there's a separate line for Accor members but that wasn't the case here. The check-in person was dismissive and the whole experience felt rushed, like he was trying to get rid of us, ok, maybe they're super busy and flustered. We didn't make too much of the situation. We get to the room and the room was dusty. Toiletries were limited to just the bare minimum. What happened to the bigger bars of bath soap, the shower cap, the cotton tips, etc that usually comes with a Fairmont room? We ended up sneezing during the whole day and finally figured that the room was so dusty that it was triggering our allergies. Their staff don't seem well trained as we were sent back and forth from the front desk and the restaurant trying to break change (so we can tip the maid) with both sides saying no they cannot help us. We had some vouchers for welcome drinks that we tried redeeming but the host at the restaurant told us that they were busy and we can try using them with room service instead. We called for room service from our room like they suggested but we were told, nope, nothing they can do, they can't redeem the vouchers through room service and then promptly hung up on us. Why is it my job to figure out these things? I just want to be able to stay at the hotel and relax. We ended up getting the drinks the next day, and they were, terrible to say the least. At this point our negativity towards the hotel was building, I was determined not to let this ruin my getaway. Alas, thats when the TV broke. Also, speaking of the TV, why is the TV so small? The rooms at the Fairmont Royal York were 42 inch TVs and came with chrome cast. It was an amazing experience and I was hoping to replicate it here. We first thought it was the remote that stopped working, but we realized eventually it was the TV. It was late at night but an engineer came to check it out, after some back and forth it was finally fixed. To his credit, the engineer was very nice and apologetic about the situation. But by the time the TV was fixed we were too tired to even watch it. My list of complaints has already run long, i wont get into it too much, but lets just say that housekeeping was also disappointing, many items in our room were not replenished. By the end of our stay, I caught myself constantly repeating the sentence, "what is wrong with this hotel?" Needless to say, I've written off this Fairmont property in my books. The only good qualities of the Chateau Laurier are the location and its beauty. There's certainly something wrong with management here and it only takes a Google search to find similar complaints about the hotel. read more

Something is rotten in the state of Fairmont. Quite possibly the worst ever arrival experience I have had at a hotel of note, ever. Anywhere in the world. I have visited the chateau with relatives for some 15 years and watched how people would treat the name with a certain respect and reverence accorded an establishment such as a Claridges or a Carlyle Hotel. The truth is the hotel is suffering from being iconic and the ownership failing to close and gut renovate it in the manner of a Savoy or Ritz. This has led to a series of managers tinkering with ideas which have seen the hotel get more striped down decor wise in the style of a Ian Schrager property and last time disco music at ear splitting volume. This time the experience with service was simply beyond the pale - I have had better experience at a Hilton Garden Inn. Check in to be fair was very nice, bell staff good and the server in the main bar very professional. Management was however dreadful. Having drove 11 hrs from New York clearly one was ready to rest. A large wedding was underway on arrival and I was told the nearest parking was half a mile away and it was my problem. My wife spoke to a manager to make the case that this seemed a little extreme and surely something would open up on property and we were told to leave the car and if something opened up it could be dealt with. We retired to the restaurant and then to bed. Shortly after falling asleep the phone rings and a manager comes on and says we should get up and move the car now - problem, we are tired and have had some alcohol and are probably not capable of moving the car at that moment. The manager then informs me that he will Call at 5am to have us get up and move the car off property. My wife retorted that this seemed unreasonable given the travellng - the manager said 6am - on a Saturday when parliament is not in session next door ? A little extreme. The manager then demanded (as no one requested them when we arrived) our car keys And came to the room. Answering the door the tall, thin, blonde gentleman (in a mask) held out his hand - I asked if he had a valet receipt - after all what if this is a suberfuge by a clever car jacker. The gentleman had no receipt to offer only to say "I will be there in the morning" and Then went and came back five minutes later with a valet ticket. At first I thought the chateau's challenge was one of its beautiful architectural bones being updated internally for the twenty-first century but now wonder if the ownership has the management capability to make the investment worthwhile - perhaps that is why loud disco music to drown out conversation - or even complaint - became popular here for a while.... Less than bare minimum for the price of luxury. Where do I even start? Check in- terrible entryway to the hotel, waited about 50 minutes to valet the car, no bell boys at the entry. Check in inside- easy process however the front desk person wrote down the wrong room number which resulted in about an hour and a half an hour delay of getting to the actual room assigned for us. Room- nothing out of ordinary, comfortable beds so that wasn't bad. HOWEVER, the amount of dust and dirt in the room was absolutely disgusting. See pictures attached. Check out- waited for an hour and a half for a cart to load our luggage, called them 4 times while receiving text messages that my car that was brought up will be re-parked due to no show. Literally had my kids and friend grab what we could and carried it to the car. Just stunned at the poor level of service. Never staying at a Fairmont again, the Marriott is cleaning and the service is better. read more

During my time in Ottawa, I knew I had to visit the Chateau Laurier for afternoon tea and guess what...I made it :) The ambiance was light, fresh and comforting - even on a rainy day. My friend made the reservation for a group of 5 and a great afternoon it was. We all ordered the afternoon tea package which included an assortment of sandwiches, scones, desserts and your choice of tea. The afternoon tea is expensive, after taxes and tip my bill was over $100 CAD but worth every penny because this is an experience that I will never forget. The Fairmont Château Laurier had me feeling like a princess in my own castle during my last trip to Ottawa! I recently stayed for two nights and was quite impressed. I had a super spacious room on the first floor with a king bed. I loved the large windows that looked out into a courtyard facing other rooms which was super cozy especially when it was snowing! I could hear the rooms next door pretty easily when they were being loud so that was one drawback, but rather minor. Besides that, the bed was comfy, they had nice toiletries, and the heater was very efficient. The hotel has everything that I needed amenity wise, as well. The gym was well equipped with one of the most high tech treadmills I've ever ran on. There is also an indoor pool which seemed to be super popular with families. I ordered yogurt via room service for breakfast and it came quickly and was delicious. I also had breakfast the next day in the actual restaurant, Wilfred's, where there is an ample buffet or you can order a la carte. I opted for a bagel and lox a la carte which was HUGE but it was very good, as well. I wish I could've checked out Zoe's for a drink, but did take a peek in and loved how bright and open it is. From the front desk and concierge, to the restaurant staff and bellhops, everyone was so friendly and helpful if needed. Since it's not super busy season in the Capital City, I got a pretty good deal on my room. That being said, high prices are still reflected in things like water ($8 for large bottle), room service, and the like. I would love to stay here again when I return to Ottawa! read more

We had to wait 4 hours after check-in for our room to be ready and I've never had to wait that long to get into a hotel room I already paid for. My first impression here already is that this establishment does not care for their customers. Also, the front desk will not tell you that there is free wifi provided and there will be no indicator in your hotel room or key card that there is free wifi. When you try to sign into the wifi network on your device, it will give you automatically give you two options of wifi payment to be charged to your bill: 1) $14 for standard per day and 2) $28 for premium per day. For anyone with upcoming reservations, do not fall for the scam of paying for wifi even though that's what the hotel tries to get you to do. Upon check-in, first ask for the access code to sign into wifi. read more

So happy I got to experience the majestic Chateau Laurier!I booked a last minute stay seeing as how the rates were very affordable during this time of year. For long weekends or summer, the rooms easily douple/triple in price. This must be the best hotel in the city, staff and decor are splendid. The hotel is centrally located, right at the heart of all attractions. If you want a VIP experience, a romantic getaway or an occasion to remember, I would highly recommend it. Just upon entering, you will see the ballrooms and lobby are fit for royalty. There were a couple weddings during the weekend, I can see how this is a popular venue, it's one of the classiest and most elegant places I've ever stepped into. I stayed in the basic Fairmount king room 404 and was happily upgraded to a room with a view, gorgeous bay windows directly facing Parliament Hill and overlooking the canal. The staff also accommodated my requests for early check in and additional pillows ready upon arrival. The room is clean and nicely renovated, unfortunately the bathroom remains small and the tub so narrow and low, it's not recommended to take a bath in. I noticed a lot of white fluff that looks like dust near the bed and when I wore black pants, everything stuck on it- Rest assured, I confirm that this is lint from the bedding and not dust. Bathrobes are a nice touch, I also love the toiletries- Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar of soap and lotion are custom blend from a made in Canada beauty brand called Le Labo. Their 60ml bottle of shampoo retails for 60USD$! Everything about my stay felt high quality. For a luxury hotel, I wish certain services were provided at no charge, like bottles of water or even chocolates on your pillow, just an extra mile to stand apart. Make sure to join their loyalty program President's Club, otherwise the wifi is not free either. Other little drawbacks that come down to personal preference: the pillows and mattress are far too soft. Everywhere I go now, the beds all have pillowtops that just feel like giant marshmallows. If you like a firmer bed with resistance, you may not have the best sleep. The water pressure is also weak but this is not due to plumbing or anything wrong with the building. As with most hotels, the shower heads all have waterflow restrictors. You can see for yourself, unscrew the shower head and you'll notice a brightly colored piece of plastic with a tiny hole the size of a needle- this drastically reduces the water debit. Sadly not much can be done unless you travel with a pair of pliers and want to yank that out.. In all, the experience was favorable, if I were to come back, I would invest in a deluxe room. I had such a great time, it felt like home away from home and I want to enjoy more of that pampering feeling. It's amazing what a beautiful room and view can do to uplift your spirits. Note: check your bill when you leave, there is a destination marketing fee (tourism tax) that you can have removed. It'll save you a few dollars you just have to ask! This is a very grand château in turn-of-the-century historical style where many former Prime Ministers, Pierre Trudeau. King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, The King and Queen of Siam and several former U.S. presidents have all stayed here. The location is adjacent to the Parliament. This is by far the best hotel I ever stayed at in Canada and probably one of the top ten hotels I stayed at in the world. It is truly a must see and experience hotel with excellent service and location. My check in went smoothly. Since I am a Fairmont member I received complimentary WiFi during my stay. My room 227 was a rather modest, but, fully functional king bedroom on the second floor away from the elevators, which is my personal preference. My room cost $332 Canadian. My daily valet parking added $49 Canadian daily. I was here on business for only two nights so I enjoyed the hotel meeting room, catering and ballroom evening cocktail event services. My check out also went smoothly. I have stayed at other Fairmont's in California and I would say this is the best Fairmont I have ever stayed at. read more

Currently staying in this hotel. Room is hot, 23c / 74F. We have complained multiple times, they gave us a fan. Doesn't cool off at night either. Elevator is hit or miss, whenever we try to go to lobby, either elevator goes to lobby but doors do not open, or we just go up. We have gone up more often than we have been able to go to the lobby on first try. Shower has no water pressure. We have a lamp on bedside table, but nothing to plug it into. Why did they bother? Housekeeping came at 0900, we were still in room. They handed us a pile of towels and never came back. We have discussed all these issues with the front desk. Hotel is very old and definitely needs upgrading. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is the location is wonderful. read more

I stayed here during a conference in September 2019. The hotel has a nice flair and all the public rooms look great and spacious but don't be fooled: the bedrooms are tiny. This is a hotel that lives not up to its reputation. All technology is retrofitted but a bit amateurish. Not enough outlets in the room, noisy AC and everyone is tiny. I would go there for dinner but stay in a different hotel that has decent rooms and bathrooms. The room rate was 409 CAD which will find you a suite in other nearby hotels. read more

I had a really nice experience at the Fairmount Château Laurier with my kids, I wasn't really sure about my choice as Fairmount hotels always sound like professional environment to me but because I knew that this weekend was going to be extra cold, I've decided to choose this centralized location. This hotel is steps away from the Rideau Mall which is very convenient when you realize that you forgot a few stuff at home. The checking in was very quick (always a plus when you're with young kids), they even offered coloring books to my sons, they were happy with the little attention. the room was very nice with high ceilings, the beds were extremely comfy, the shower was user-friendly. Of course, because of the kids, we spent a great amount of time at the pool, we went around 5 pm, it wasn't crowdy, everything was clean and the water was warm. My only negative comment would be about the noise level of the opposite room at extremely late hours but someone warned them about it, then everything was quiet again. I strongly recommend this hotel if you're in the area for the refinement, client service, centralized location and relaxing atmosphere! read more

I don't normally stay at luxury hotels, but if they're all like the Château Laurier, I might do so more often. I stayed here for just one night while visiting Ottawa. The hotel is located right across the canal from Parliament. The prime location was excellent for being able to see all that Ottawa has to offer: the museums, the government buildings, the restaurants, and more. The hotel furnishings are stately and regal. Everywhere from the lobby to the restaurants to the art gallery to the rooms has an air of sophistication to it. The room itself was large and comfortable. To be honest, I didn't spend much time in the hotel - I was mostly seeing the city - but whenever I came back, it felt like home. Overall, staying here made for a lovely visit to Ottawa. We booked our room through Hotwire and got an amazing rate of $98.00. Considering we booked it so cheap, you'd think they would be stingy with a room upgrade. Not so. Miriam upgraded us to a deluxe suite. It was our anniversary so I'm sure that helped. They even left a card and cookies in the room for us. We loved the place so much we decided to book another night. Gambling again with Hotwire, we got lucky and got the same hotel for $98 again. I was beyond stoked! My wife called down and spoke with Miriam again. She switched another guest around so we could stay in the same room and not have to repack. That made out stay even more pleasant. They also gave us a late checkout to 1:30pm which was awesome since we didn't want to leave too early as we were having dinner with friends in Cornwall around 6pm. Way to go guys! We shall return. I am normally not a fan of older hotels. They smell funky, they're dark and they're just not well maintained. However when you come to Chateau Laurier you're in a freakin castle! The place is pretty grand and really well maintained. They don't have the musky smell some older hotels that look like castles have in Europe and even some in North America. I've stayed overnight here after some Christmas parties and the rooms are large but the beds are ok. The one I had was starting to get soft or maybe that's just the type of mattress it was. If I was coming from out of town this would be a top 5 hotel for me with the caveet I hope my bed is more firm. They have a lot of events that happen in this hotel and you can't get more centrally located than here. The area is great and the staff are friendly. read more

The hubby surprised me to an amazing long weekend at the Chateau during the Christmas Holidays! There is something so magical about castles in winter, with their snow-capped turrets and inviting dimly-lit interiors. As soon as you step into the lobby through the gold revolving doors, you can immediately feel the grandeur and timeless beauty of the place. Being there just 2 days before Christmas, the hotel was about 75% full as it is probably one of the most popular times to visit during the year, with numerous events taking part in the Ballrooms. We felt lucky to have been there during the holidays as the hotel hosts the 'Trees of Hope' charity event, an annual Christmas tree competition where many companies in the area take part and visitors can vote on their favourite. The grand halls glittered with lights from the enchanted forest of trees that filled the lobby, adding that final touch to the Festive feeling. Room: We stayed in the Deluxe King room which was nothing but luxury! It was huge with a great sitting area, sleeping area and a very large and lavish bathroom that had two sinks, walk-in shower, big bathtub and an abundance of towels! The bathroom was well-equipped with luxury brand Le Labo products and plush His & Hers bathrobes and slippers. The room was spotless, the soft carpet made It so cozy and the heating was perfect. We were lucky to have a corner unit so the room had lots of windows, framed by regal drapes that displayed the stunning Architectural gems of the city. From the vintage-style classical furniture, ornate details and refined colour scheme, it truly felt as if we had stepped into a bedroom from Downton Abbey! Location & Services: The hotel is in the prime downtown location, walking distance to all the iconic sights and shopping so we never needed the car. Bear in mind though, that parking is currently under construction and the only option is Valet which is $45 per night. The Chateau has a fully equipped gym and large heated salt-water pool (no sauna though). We were pleased to see that the hotel offered a nightly 'turn-down' service upon request which I absolutely loved. After enjoying dinner downtown and watching the Parliament light show, it was so special to come back to a room that had been especially prepared for bedtime with the sheets folded over, pillows fluffed, water bottles and to our surprise, a signature box of macarons on the bed. There is nothing better than sinking into a comfy king-size bed with a cup of Nespresso and a box of macarons - I was in heaven! Overall, we had a magical unforgettable staycation at Fairmont Chateau Laurier. Highly recommend it for a romantic weekend getaway, especially in the winter which I feel is the finest time to stay at the Chateau. The room, extra services and WIFI are all pricey compared to other luxury hotels however, this National Historic building has a charm, character and class which truly makes it exceptional and incomparable! read more

The entrance and lobby are super, large spaces all over, the personnel are friendly and helpful. The elevator has wood and the rooms are great, big and very comfortable. This hotel is one of the true gems of Ottawa in beauty, history and architecture. It's a National Historic Site, and for good reason. You can't stroll downtown without being captivated by it's massiveness. Oh, and it looks like a freaking castle, which makes it's appeal even greater! Built in the early 1900s it boats lavish views of the Ottawa River and Major's Hill Park. This is easily the most elaborate hotel in the city, and where celebrities generally stay, galas are held and I have afternoon tea with my mom and sister (see Zoey's Corner for more on that!). This is a popular (though very expensive) wedding venue, as it has stunning ballrooms and can accommodate small and large weddings. It's the home of numerous fundraisers and charity balls, and has amazing Christmas trees during the holidays. The building itself if very interesting, and if you're in the area I recommend just stopping in for a look at the beautiful moulding, stunning fireplaces and original decor. They have a ton of original fixtures (the mail slot is still in use today!), and there are photographs and documents all over telling the story of the hotel. I loved reading the original rates ($2 a day for a full suite in 1912!), and seeing photos of famous guests. I'm sure this would be a lovely place to spend a night, (though it's totally haunted and you can hear all about that on the Ottawa Haunted Walk) but for now I've only attended events here and walked around admiring the place and soaking in the history. A true piece of history in the heart of Ottawa. I love staying (and eating) at the Chateau Laurier! It's close to the NAC, the Byward Market and all the touristy stuff you don't always get to see, as a local. Make sure you carve out time for High tea in the newly renovated Zoe's restaurant and lounge... also cocktails are in order for later that evening ;) PRO TIP- Before you leave, take home all the left over Le Labo products! I love the Rose 31 signature Fairmont scent!! read more

At about $270 CAD per night (2 adults w/ king bed), this "fancy" hotel has: 1. No free wifi 2. No free parking 3. No complementary water 4. No fan in bathroom 5. Clogged shower drain 6. Dirty shower robes 7. Dirty furnitures (especially those sofa chairs) The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one is the staffs seemed nice and accommodating. All in all, I'm not returning for sure. read more
