Best place for donuts in Fairview! My review is only for carry out donuts. The long John custard filled is perfectly chewy and sweet - $3 each. They also have apple fritters, turnovers, giant cinnamon rolls, and the other basic donuts. Coffee is weak (watered down) for my liking. Get there early at 7am before all the donuts are gone. Plenty of seating among kitschy wildlife decor if you're dining in. Friendly staff who knew every regular by name! read more

Lived in the area over a year and this is the only place that sells decent donuts. Usually hit or miss on if the donuts will make your stomach hurt the rest of the day or not. You can tell they don't change the oil that often. They did the paczki's and they were so fresh you can definitely tell fresh oil compared to not. I've eaten at here on and off for the past 25 years. It's gone through many owners, some do a great job and others should be horse whipped in the town square. When I was a kid, the glazed donuts were huge, fresh and sugary sweet. These things would have put Krispy Kreme out of business. Their breads were fair but nothing topped their donuts. They had a well rounded family style menu which was in place over the years. I ate there last year and was sad to see how dark and dreary the restaurant had become. It's run by one of my high school class mates and I'm not sure what happened but he's one who deserves a horse whipping. I ordered take out, daily specials and the food was average. Not made with the love and fresh ingredients I remember as a kid. Gone were the real mashed potatoes, meat loaf and roasted turkey. This was all GFS out of a can. If I ever decide to return home, I'd buy this place for the sole reason that it could be great again! read more

I was in Michigan last week and the last time I was there I was introduced to this little bakery/coffee shop. You don't think much about it's unassuming building as you drive by and it can be easy to miss. But let me tell you, they are a true gem, all of their baked goods are sweet treats and should NOT be missed. My personal favorite are their apple fritters. Everything is handmade and fresh baked. The coffee shop is worth a stop, either on your way farther up-north or a destination. We live nearby and stop here regularly. The bakery section is small, but fresh every morning. This place has the best hamburgers in the county. I think the toasted buttery buns are what makes them so amazing. For breakfast, I highly recommend an omelette -- they are huge and fluffy and come with delicious buttery toast. Now that I'm well into adulthood I try to avoid donuts most of the time, but I make an exception when I'm in Fairview. The coffee shop's donuts are the best you'll find ANYWHERE, hands down. The cream filled long john will melt in your mouth, and their cinnamon rolls come close to perfection as well: huge, gooey and very cinnamon-ey. The pizza is also very good; it is much improved over the former owners' recipe. The incident involving the truck crashing through the restaurant in 2007 was tragic (and almost took out my parents and an aunt of mine), but if there is a silver lining it is that the interior of the restaurant has been completely remodeled. Prior to the accident, the place looked like it had since the 1960s (or perhaps even earlier). It now has a wonderful northern theme going on with lots of handcrafted knotty pine decor. NOTE: If you are an animal rights activist, you will want to avoid this establishment, as there are a lot of taxidermied animals hanging on the walls. My only critique is that I wish the menu was a bit more creative. Most restaurants in the northern woods aren't really taking the kinds of risks with their menus that food joints in more urban areas are able to do. But for its standard fare, and for the population it typically serves, the Fairview Coffee Shop is as good as it gets! read more

We were in town for the holiday weekend and went for breakfast one morning. The special that morning was blueberry pancakes with choice of breakfast meat for $6.50... I'm not usually a pancake guy, but these things were out of this world. Light as a feather, and delicious. Loaded with no-doubt local blueberries. The sausage patties were mild and typical for the area. I ordered two OM eggs on the side (which got piled atop the cakes) because I like when my yolks mix with my syrup. Just moved to the area. First visit ever. Came to the bakery for some pie. They don't make pie, hmm a bakery that doesn't make pies. So what the heck, we are here. Let's get lunch. I had the Cowboy burger and onion rings which were both excellent! My wife's experience was difference. No diet soda of any kind. She ordered the Michigan salad which according to the menu, should have included apples. There was no apple. The lettuce was soggy and was core. The chicken was hard and dry. The service was lukewarm so we felt mentioning it was pointless. When we walked In it felt as if we were interrupting something more important, but there was only a couple of other people there when we came in. After a few minutes we were alone. Had to have a second drink removed from the bill as my wife had to order water. Then the bill had a 30% minimum tip when paying with a CC... for lunch! That's a new one. The burger, one soda, salad, water and tip was about $26! It wasn't worth a $26 lunch. Sorry. read more
