Oh the Fairview. If you like dive bars, then this is your spot! We went there on a Saturday night. The bartender was solo and was kickin ass all night. Strong drinks, good beer, had a band playing. There is a ping pong table out back and what looked like a stage. I never did ask, but it looks like they have concerts during the summer? Unknown. Anybody who has been to Talkeetna knows the Fairview. Even if it's not your cup of tea, I'd still recommend swinging by and having a drink. Don't forget to "ring the bell." ;) read more

We were fairly excited to try this place as dive bars are kinda cool. We went inside to eat and have some drinks. We got a table but had to go up to the bar to order which is fine I honestly prefer to do that so you can get your drinks at your own pace. The bartender wasn't nice but she wasn't a Cu#% either so there's that. The whole time from the second we walked in this guy at the bar stared us down the WHOLE time so we stared back and he would occasionally look away but then do it again. Every single person that walked in he tried to intimidate why I don't know he was old fat and a drunk but he seemed like a regular and if he is we counted he ran off 7 different couples because the couples were older over 60 and they didn't want to deal with it. The food fish and chips wasn't good at all the coleslaw was terrible and it was the smallest portion I have ever had the fish wasn't much better. So the inside invite one star that's good and service and the guy at the bar his picture will be attached so when the owner reads this hell he might be the owner but if not and you know him he's costing you business. The outside bar was five stars the lady black hair was nice as can be every time we got a drink she would say cheers very friendly . read more

Spent a rainy Sunday afternoon here after our plane tour got cancelled. An old bar and hotel in the middle of Talkeetna. Really enjoyed all of the stuff on the walls. We got there before the crowd arrived and had a seat at the bar. The musician they had this Sunday was great. Got the place singing and dancing. Heather the bartender was amazing. Friendly and provided great service. My wife got a bowl of seafood chowder that we shared that was very good. Right outside the place they have food trucks that you can get food. Really fun Sunday afternoon. When the bell rings the person who rang buys everyone a drink. Happened three times while we were there. read more

It's one of the few places in Talkeetna that is probably much more beloved by Alaskans than tourists. Even in the winter, when it's 17 degrees below zero, you'll find this place packed to the gills with a band playing. They have rooms upstairs (that they don't really advertise) that are really cheap and really Spartan. It's a bed in a room. If you're even a little bit pampered, you need not apply. I love it. The bar at the Fairview Inn is SO interesting. It's authentic Alaska meets frat house. In Alaska, century old historic buildings with character a rarity. It wouldn't matter what the owners of the building were doing business as, it would be cool regardless because the space is just awesome. The fact that it's an Inn and a watering hole just add to the cool factor. It's a interesting mix of locals and tourists so there's good conversation to be had. The lower level is the bar, which is a series of rooms which provides some intimacy. I loved the room in the back with couches... it took me right back to my college days. Some people hear Inn and think of a quiet, quaint lover's retreat. In this instance, not so much. Fairview is much more colorful. If you like people, and you want to connect with other humans in a relaxed atmosphere you'll love it here. read more

We only went to the bar here, but it has great live music (I believe nightly - there is a schedule on their door, but we were only staying two nights so I did not study it in detail) and a nice atmosphere. The locals seem to pile in and have a great time. The service is friendly, although you can't be in any hurry because they definitely take their time in getting to you. That's okay, though, because if you're in a hurry 2.5 hours out of Anchorage, then you're probably in the wrong place anyway. Summertime, I'm told this place is swarming with tourists. During the bitter winter, we got to experience the kaleidoscope of local charm that ended up intriguing and entertaining in all ways possible. While waiting for our Trapper John's cabin to be readied, we toured the town on foot and in the pouring snow. We headed towards the frozen lake and imagined what it would look like in summer, but what it was now was a brilliant marshmallowed open field and a picturesque moment. We popped into a gift shop and chatted with the owner who apologized for looking so tired. Apparently, she's on the moose recovery call list and was up all night recovering a train killed moose's meat and fur for town donation. Seriously amazing! Walking no more than a few hundred feet, we end up at the Fairview Inn for a few drinks and ended up in a time warp that transported us to a bar/saloon that oozed with character among characters. The female bartender appeared to me as a lover of 70's nostalgia, complete with Farrah Fawcett feathered hairdo, dream catcher earrings and a pink thermal blouse that matched her pink jeans. All original memorabilia mind you. We returned after our pie making class and the pink lady bartender was leaving her shift. Heading out into the cold, she sported a pink fur coat that enhanced the Pepto Bismol motif. What a sweet lady though, she came over to us, took our hands into hers, looked us in the eyes and said, 'have an amazing time here and enjoy your trip to Talkeetna.' Aloha exists big time in these parts of Alaska. Makes me wish the same was true for many parts of Honolulu. Our plan was to leave the Fairview Inn and head back to the cabin, however we were told that a traveling musician would be performing "Jesus Christ Superstar" to bass guitar. So this is what they come in from the cold for? Curious and getting more than a little bit drunk from numerous amounts of Alaskan beer and Gentleman's Jack, we were the only tourists in a bar full of Talkeetnans (?). The musician took his place on stage after what seemed like an eternity of "test-test-test-1-2-test". He breaks into a bass riff of the JCS overture and screams: "Where are you from Jesus?!! What do you want Jesus?!! Tell me...!!" OMG, WTF have we got ourselves into? The guy next to me (owner and operator of Talkeetna's taxi service) says, "this is going to be epic man, balls out." I'm like, balls out? His girlfriend (a snow plower by trade with hands like sandpaper) clarifies, "it gets crazy in here sometimes. The last time people ended up naked and you know, balls out." Alrighty then. With the amount of locals going out and coming back stoned, I guess anything's possible. A few beers turned into several hours worth of an experience like none other. We made friends and made numerous attempts to convince people we were from Hawaii and in Talkeetna simply for vacation (in winter). All of this to a psychedelic rendering of Jesus Christ Superstar. We waddled out into the now calf-deep snow for a 10 minute walk to our cabin while silvery snowflakes shower and unbeaten our path. Nothing but our breaths and the sound of snow. We were swallowed into the night's changing landscape. Almost getting lost never felt so sublime. Historical Facts: Constructed in 1923 by an enterprising fellow named Ben Neuman, the Fairview Inn was to serve the accommodation needs of travelers as they traveled between Seward and Fairbanks on the newly constructed Alaska Railroad. Since the Seward to Fairbanks journey was a two-day trip in those days, Talkeetna was initially picked as the over-night stop, or half-way point. The Fairview Inn also has hosted or played a large part in a number of activities including the annual Talkeetna Moose Drop Festival (July), Bachelors Society Ball (December), Carhart Weekend (December), dart tournaments and as assortment of entertaining events throughout the year. There are some unique customs established at the Fairview which you should be familiar with when you visit. Many of these have existed for years and are carried forward out of habit or in the interest of preserving a little of the nostalgia so characteristic of Talkeetna. * All firearms must be checked with the bartender before one orders anything to drink. (Due to new state laws, firearms are no longer allowed on premise) * Dogs must be left outside. Dog teams should be tied up away from the Inn. * The bartender is the only one allowed to 'stoke' the wood burning stove. * Many of the locals will buy the bar a round of drinks. Consider a thank you and feel free if you want to do the same at some point, but it is not required. * People who have a room rented also have a key to the side door, should you stay out past closing time: but please, if you come in late or early, depending on how you look at it, please re-lock the door after entering. read more

We found the Fairview inn to very historical, we began to take photos only to find the owner behind the bar disgusted and covering her face, she proceeded to be rude to myself and my family as we ordered a drink, she then told us after we finished our drink that we were longer welcomed and proceeded to kick us out with no explanation, the only reason I could think of is a certain disgust for tourists which would make sense since she has the property listed for sale. Out of every negative situation comes a positive, this place needs a new owner who will appreciate the vibrant tourists and locals that makes Talkeetna vibrant, We had a wonderful Alaskan vacation and we know that one bad apple doesn't speak for all the heart warming local Alaskans that we met, best of luck to the new future owners. read more

The bartender was a real bitch and was rude and not friendly at all. She had snarky remarks to what I was saying and did not look like she wanted to be working there. She told me she had a full bar and that I could not sit at the bar and that she was busy. There were three people at the bar at the time and they all have been served before we got there. She also responded to one of my question by saying "Don't be a smart ass, you can just leave the bar." I will not be going back. read more

My family had the same experience as Brad below. We were visiting from California, being tourists, enjoyed a float down the river, had dinner at Denali Brew Co, then headed here for an after dinner beer. We bought our beers, sat down, drank them, went back for round two and were told that we were done, and it was time for us to leave. When we asked why? She said she didn't have to tell us, and that it's posted on the sign outside. "Bar tender can ask you to leave without letting you know why" The only thing that we could link this to was that we are all bilingual and were speaking Spanish off and on. This is a horrible way and last impression for a day visit to the town of Talkeetna. Many business' in town are so heavily dependent on tourism, they should be concerned about this bars manners and blatant discrimination. I will be spreading this alert of modern day discrimination as far as I can get the word to go. Love, your genuine American tourist. read more
