He was the dean of boys at Everglades Middle School and assistant principal at South Broward and Hallandale high schools. At the time he was elected Mr. Byrd was the only black person on the City Commission. He was first elected in 1981 and went on to serve as mayor from 1983 to 1984. While in office Mr. Byrd advocated for planned growth for Dania Beach, Broward's oldest city, and he worked to attract new businesses and better housing to redevelop the city's older, poorer west side. Mr. Byrd passed away in 1988 at the age of 59 from a massive heart attack while awaiting surgery. Chester Byrd is remembered as an educator, champion of affordable housing, and a community organizer and leader. This neighborhood park is located between J. A. Ely Blvd. and Phippen Rd. It has an exercise path, benches, covered areas, outdoor exercise equipment, a shade covered playground and a basketball court. Interestingly the park borders West Lawn Cemetery.

Trust & believe: the only sure thing when it comes to a zip code is prices. There are gems to be found everywhere. Little River Park is one of them. Does it have all the accoutrements of some of the other, pricier parts of the metro? No. Of course not. But it *does* have two baseball fields, a basketball court, a pool, a field house, plenty of green space with shade trees, an updated playground, benches/tables for resting (and/or eating copious amounts of fried conch), and a community field. Would I come here at nighttime? No. Would I come to *any* Miami metro park at nighttime? No. So, keep that in mind when folks bellyache about location. I found LRP to be a charming, neighborhood park meant for use and exploitation by locals. It might not be a destination park, but as a localized green space open and available for and to those in the 33147, I think it does the job. I never felt out of place, scared, concerned, or anything else of note. During my visit, I saw kids playing, a dj setting up for a birthday party and mothers strolling their little ones about. When in the area and in need of a wide, open space (or, again, a place to eat delicious fried conch), I urge you to check it out. I think you might enjoy what you find.

There is a dog park, a kid play area, plenty of seating throughout, fishing areas, and walking paths. It's become a favorite spot to see sunsets. There is a small parking lot right in front, pay by phone street options, or a garage close by. Close to the Sunset Harbor shops, or you can bring your own bites to the park. I have passed this park many times while visiting the Miami Airport Convention Center and was…read morecurious about what kind of park this was in the middle of the city. After a recent event at the convention center I stopped by to check it out. It turns out it is a hidden gem with a surprise you don't often find in the city. This park in Miami is named in honor of Robert King High (April 9, 1924 - August 30, 1967). King was an attorney and politician. He was born in Tennessee and moved to Florida after serving in WWII where he became an active in the democratic party. He was mayor of Miami for 10 years before running for governor in 1966 but he was defeated by Republican Claude Kirk. Robert King High he died of a heart attack less than a year after losing the election. Robert King High Park is located next to Lake Maha and dates to the 1970's but It was extensively remodeled in 2011 when a building was added for classes. The park is divided into two sections, a 1.5 acre day use recreational area in the south front of the park that includes six basketball courts, softball/ baseball field, a sand volleyball court, and a playground. The back north end of the park contains the surprise, the 5.24 acre Carlos Arboleya campground. Arboleya was born in Cuba. He was the former president of Barnett Bank and a presence in South Florida's Cuban-American business community. He volunteered for 60 years with the youth of Miami and was the former president of the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. In 1978 in honor of his long and dedicated service to the youth of Miami and the Boy Scouts, the campground in the park was named in his honor. Arboleya waged a one man campaign to keep the area that is now the campground from being turned into a velodrome. The velodrome was built elsewhere in the city and this area was preserved so that the scouts of Miami could experience camping in a city that had very little places for this activity. In this area of the park is a lake for fishing, a pool. and hiking trails. Discovering the campground was my favorite part of this park because it is such an amazing resource for the Miami community. Kids who live in the city and who might not be able to experience the joy of camping out have the perfect place to experience sleeping outdoors thanks to the foresight of Carlos Arboleya. Even though he has since passed away he is still positively impacting the youth of Miami.

City of Plantation is located in Broward County and was incorporated in 1953. There are…read moreapproximately 100,000 residents and the city has been rapidly expanding since the 1970s. When I lived in Sunrise, I was always driving through or visiting Plantation. It's a nice city with lots of trees and pretty houses, especially at the Plantation Acres area. They had nice parks, playgrounds, and many amenities. Just like neighboring cities, it is rapidly expanding and the population is increasing. Overall, it is a great spot to visit.

We had the joy of attending their Fall Family Festival and were absolutely shocked by the scope, scale, and breadth. Truly had activities for all ages especially the 2-10 year old crowd. Dynamic range of inflatables, bungees, climbing walls, pony rides, petty zoo, paint-a-pumpkin, DJ, hay ride, police band, costume contests, magician shows, carnival games, and a huge gathering of local businesses there giving out stuff to the kids and sharing more about themselves. And all of this for only $5 - absolutely unbelievable. Made me so proud to be in a city that so values family and invests a huge effort into making an affordable and high quality event. The kids got to salute local members of our incredible military and interact with local officers of the law. From top to bottom, this event was stellar. We won't miss it next year and we truly hope all the incredible staff, leaders, volunteers, and vendors get the big shoutout they deserve!! THANK YOU!!!

You have to be a member to use the club. If you try and walk thru the property the manager or…read morecustodian will tell you to leave because you don't belong there. If your a local key rat and know members of the beach club then you are welcomed. If you are sitting on the beach and are not a member but want to walk on the property to get a burger and fries as your spending money there ... then your welcome. Moral of the story is know someone who is a member or be very polite when walking there from the beach and spend some $$$ and you will be ok to sit there and enjoy the view. If you randomly just walk there and don't buy anything and your not a member you will be kicked off the property. Members only. Honest mistakes by passing thru to the beach isn't a good excuse... it says at the entrance members only. That's why they have the Public Park with local key gate entrance next door. If your not from the key and your an out of Towner or fake key rat then you wouldn't know that. Love the beach club but it's lost its touch from a traditional local fun key spot to becoming an egotistic members only stuffy and pricey beach number spot with low quality service and idiotic people running the institution of what the beach club should truly represent... a good time. It needs a facelift and I don't mean that physically.... it needs to have a fresher style of today with the personality of the 70s. The only thing good they've done there lately is remodel the patio area for weddings. That's about it. Maybe build a new gym and equipment for members and how about a real grill like they just opened at key colony or ocean club or the ritz? Welcome to the 21st century. I'm not even a member but I say spend members money on things they can really use.
