I always hit children's bookstores when traveling and this tiny Nashville gem is a new favorite. It's tucked in Five Points Alley, a creative collection of independent local shops. Small but overflowing with a wonderful selection of books and unique children's gifts. The shop owner was very helpful and knowledgeable. She helped me select souvenirs for my girls - books by local authors and some of her favorite books and gifts based on my daughter's interests. I'm so glad we left the bustle of Broadway to visit this charming shop and neighborhood. read more

I never thought that I would be reviewing a children's bookstore anytime soon as I am not what one may call "maternal"... Don't be alarmed, I haven't conceived any mini-mes as of yet but I have had several friends and family do so. Fairytales is just a few blocks from my home and during a jog (it was actually more like whimpering and walking) I came across this fun little store. Fairytales is filled with not just books but also toys, art supplies, and tiaras and tutus. I would have loved having a special little place like this around when I was a little rascal. Although I believe that with some more time on the treadmill and a little Bikriam yoga, I might be able to squeeze into the little pink tutu that I fell in love with on my last visit. Here's to having realistic goals! In the few visits that I have made, I have purchased a set of Angelina Ballerina books for a friend who recently had a daughter and an adorable plush toy set for another little girl. All the prices were more than reasonable and the employees were friendly and even assisted with gift wrapping. I also can understand how parents could enjoy some of the interactive elements of the store such as their summer reading program, party planning, and story time. Unfortunately, I was the only customer in the store on each of my visits. I hope that others learn about this little wonderland and support a deserving independent business. read more

Now, I personally didn't shop at this store since it is located in Nashville Tennessee. I was however able to call and purchase a gift card for my grandkids, whom live within walking distance. The young lady on the other end was very helpful and understanding! She was courteous and patient, since I had to explain that I was in California and the grandkids are merely minutes away from her store. I purchased a gift card and she held it in the store until they were able to shop. I printed the photo from yelp and noted the hours, just in case. Then sent off the surprise via USPS. Come to find out, that this bookstore is already on their favorites list and we're overjoyed to go on a small spree! As you can see from their photos books aren't the only sku on their shelf. They have a rainbow variety of goodies for children under 12 maybe 13. Needless to say, besides the awesome gifts I had already purchased, the grandkids were able to pick what they wanted. I was only able to do that with the assistance of the courteous staff there. Thank you, for allowing me to broaden my gift giving all the was from California!!! Prices are as average as any book - novelty store. If I am ever in that area, I will make it a TO DO and stop by in support of this small business for extending their arms out to me!!! read more

Fairytales is such a neighborhood staple for East Nashville folks. I'm so glad they've been able to pivot and adapt after not only having their location made unusable after the tornado in March but then trying to stay afloat during a pandemic. Their new location may be tiny but it doesn't lack in inventory - the spot is literally packed from floor to ceiling. Make a private appointment to shop or stop by - just make sure to bring your mask! Are you kind of a careless uncle who might've waited until the last minute to buy your nephews their Christmas presents? Are you bolting down the highway at 100 mph hoping to make it in time for Christmas eve? Have you just had Bolton's hot chicken and actually came here to get ice cream but when the ice cream shop was closed you found that coincidence has been kind to you this day and now you can save Christmas?! Well then, this place is for you. It has a ton of wonderful toys for age-limited humans. The lady there is super friendly and you get free fancy gift bagging (because you're gonna be too lazy to wrap it all anyways, you nogoodnik of an uncle). For those of you who don't reside in East Nashville, Fairytales is another example of why we are such a cool little buro. Non corporate, pure in it's concept, full of great stuff but not overwhelming you with so much wares you almost feel inadequate. I am always amazed at the new start ups that keep appearing in our neighborhood and even more pleased with how much I use and rely on them. So, this little store is a book and toy store for children with a wonderful twist. There is a secure area for children to play and do art projects while mom shops and a parent's room with a couch and hot tea if mom just wants a breather. Tammy and the girls do story time daily as well as craft activities. In addition there may be an occasional magic show or music performance so check their on line calendar for events. As for the merchandise, it's obviously kids books and toys. The toys are educational, art based, interactive, fair trade, and environmentally friendly. They have a line of hypo allergenic stuffed animals as well. One of the biggest surprises for me about the merchandise is the prices seem incredibly reasonable. I honestly expected them to be higher. Once you have visited and spent a little time, you will have a hard time going back to Davis Kidd. read more

What a fun place!! Whimiscal is the word. Paintings all around, Fairytales is the most appropriate name for this place. Not just a book store, this is a kid's (and Adult's) little haven of all things artistic. Lots of books, neat toys, fun activities and art supplies. I was surprised and excited to discover they carry ModPodge a product I needed for a decoupage project, I didn't have to drive all the way from my East Nashville home to Hobby Lobby to buy it, and it was priced only a tad bit above the much further retailer. The staff is so kind and engaging. I loved talking to the woman behind the counter, she was friendly and helpful and seemed to genuinely enjoy her work. They also do activities daily and have a calendar you can pick up in store to get involved. I am looking forward to bringing my little ones here to enjoy a workshop or hear a story read aloud. It starts with the front facade that seems to call children to it and once they open the door.....get ready.....Poof! All you'll hear is happiness. Children exploring every corner, while calling "Mom, look at this!", "Wow, I've been looking for this!", and my favorite comes from adults, "Omg, I haven't seen one of these since I was little!". This is a great spot! Respite for the frazzled mommy, play for the kids, Fairytales has it all. Everything is touchable,playable, and lots of fun. Heck, they even do birthday parties! Nice people, great great great books, friendly and welcoming vibe, no pressure to buy. I decided the corner of Porter and Riverside needed to be graced by my presence today, as I am in the process of purchasing a home within a birds eye view. So after lunch I dropped into the Fairytales Bookstore, and was extremely surprised with what I found. They sell everything you would expect of a kids book and activities store, including books, toys, everything to tickle the kids fancy of hobbies and crafts but they also had adult activities! I was greeted at the door by the very friendly owner and she openly shared her desire to be a true landmark in East Nashville. She not only has a store full of objects to tickle my inner child, but also offers book readings to children, kid crafts, an adult sanctuary (while the kids are entertained) and even adult art classes! Classes are Friday and Saturday and the instruction and supplies are provided. Classes seemed to be reasonably priced and you walk away with your artwork! This is really interesting to me, because the closest thing to artwork I have done in the last ten years is slapping neutral colored paint on my dining room wall.... I plan on returning with my patronage for all those baby showers and kid birthdays in my near future (not for me of course, for all my crazy friends) read more

I cannot speak highly enough of this store and its wonderful owner. He curates all of the inventory himself, and there is a surprisingly large selection for the relative size of the store. The inventory is a mix of classic, timeless toys along with some modern stuff as well, and a TON of amazing and unique books as well as much loved classics! I don't think I'll ever go anywhere else for my son's toys...I do believe if he doesn't have something in stock you can ask him to order it in, though don't quote me on that. I will ask him before the holiday season and update then. His wife as I understand was a wonderful woman and you can really feel her spirit in this little shop. I was really just charmed to tears by him and this wonderful little haven for children. I have a 2 year old and he was running around grabbing everything off the shelves and he didn't care at all, he told me "Other stores may be stern when it comes to these things, but we encourage kids to play, and if something gets broken then so be it, that's part of life." WOW! What an amazing attitude to have. I may be getting carried away but I really am just in love with the heart and soul of this place. Can't wait to come back again. read more

Not much I usually can say about a book store, but the one thing that I can remember is its location. This store shares a house with an ice cream parlor that is amazing, and as such was something to walk around as we ate our ice cream. The books and toys they offer are for the kids, and the kids at heart. Stuffed toys, books from our youth, all dislayed in rooms of an old house, give it a homey feel. read more

This is a fantastically curated and friendly toy store. Everything they have is of high quality. We always go here to get presents for birthday parties. And it's our kids' favorite place to shop for books. It's a meticulously selected collection. But perhaps more than anything, it's run by kind-hearted people. On our most recent trip, my daughter got a new book by her favorite author that she was excited about. When I mentioned that this was her favorite author, the shopkeeper generously gifted her an autographed copy of another book by the same author. This was unexpected and made her day. And if all that wasn't enough, they share a space with an ice cream parlor; toys and ice cream is a tough combination to beat. Support this local business! read more

This is the perfect spot to pick up a last minute bday gift for a little tyke party. Great hours too - open on Saturday and Sunday, which is a rarity in this town. They do story hours on Saturdays and have a nice little play area set up for the kids to try out toys and stretch their imaginations. And it's now "conveniently" located next to Pied Piper (ok, not so convenient when I just needed to grab a gift and my toddler is begging for ice cream, but you can make a fun daytime event of going to both). read more

To Laura who reviewed Fairytales Bookstore, I would like to share a little about the history of Fairytales Bookstore. Fairytales was the dream of Tammy Derr. She opened the first store on Riverside Dr. It was enchanting. Everything you could expect from an independent store and full of personality. She did well and had many loyal customers. Three years ago, she suffered an illness and needed a smaller space that required less energy, so she moved to the current location. Again, the store was so full of life and customers who loved her and her store. It will be two years in November since she lost her battle with cancer. Her husband has kept the store as her legacy. I'm sure with his three children, things come up, but he is a wonderful shop keeper, and he does this out of love for Tammy and the customers who loved her store and what it offered the community. I am just a toy rep who sold her the toys she stocked her store with, but I loved her, and I loved her store. Please find it in your heart to go back, and please find it in your heart to remove the negative post....I don't want someone to miss the opportunity to share the love and the wonder of Fairy Tales Bookstore. This business would have 5 stars for me except that twice in the last two months I have gone out of my way to go there to buy something (in an effort to support small businesses) and twice the shop has been closed during their posted business hours. Once I waited on purpose to buy a gift until a Saturday morning at 10:15am (on my way to a kid's bday party which made us late) and it was closed up with no explanation, even though their hours were posted online and on the door and said they opened at 10am. And again yesterday (again on a Saturday) around 5:30pm when their hours said they were open til 7pm. There were signs on the door saying they would not be open on July 2nd, which was the following day, but nothing about that day. Extremely frustrating, and obviously I won't be able to plan my purchases around supporting a small business whose hours can't be trusted. I would certainly buy from them if I happened to be there and needed something, as they are lovely people and it's a great shop, but I'm bummed, as I don't live around the corner and I love this place. read more
