Is this the best used bookstore in Tennessee? I think it might be. The store itself was full from floor to ceiling (seriously - the bookshelves are tall here), but it was organized and maintained very well. There were a few doors and rooms within the store that weren't for customers, so I had some confusion - and one of the book areas is a little hidden, but overall we had a good experience here. The place was pretty busy - more than I am used to. Occasionally, you would get some tourists who would come in being loud cracking jokes because 1 person in the group liked books. They tend to get bored quickly and leave within 10 minutes though. Great selection here - although some of the more rare books seem to be in the front near the register, and there is a sitting area here where regulars like to sit and read, which obstructs access to those shelves. Other than that, we liked our visit here and would definitely come back when we are in the area. Good selection, good non-fiction, several religion areas sprinkled throughout. The back left corner room is pretty quiet and extra dense, so I would suggest starting there. read more

Exceptional bookstore. I just left the shop not half an hour ago. I bought a few books and felt compelled to write this review for two reasons. Firstly, this is the kind of book store that you ought to support. Full stop. Secondly, when I was quietly minding my business inside the store, two anti-mask folks came in, yelled and cursed at the gentleman working in Rhino Bookseller (by himself, mind you), and immediately threatened to defame the shop online because he asked the two individuals to please ware masks (properly) while in the store. I just want to say here - that the gentleman running the shop today (I did not catch his name) handled the situation with care and professionalism. I really did appreciate his efforts in this regard. My dad is a huge fan of used bookstores. We checked out Rhino Booksellers over Thanksgiving and we were so impressed. The most unique bookstore I've ever been in, with great finds every way you turn. Lots of books in very good condition. Normally used book stores have a healthy mix of older or vintage materials as well as relatively current titles. This book store severely lacked newer titles and the prices were higher than I expected for the older books. On a side note, beware the cat! It is definitely not friendly and decided to scratch my wife hard enough to draw blood. There has to be better options for used books in Nashville. read more

Visiting Nashville and came upon this book store. The store itself is interesting-yet the books are overpriced. The bad review is due to the completely rude man that was supposed to ring up my purchase. Instead, I stood there awkwardly as he described his thin, charred steak and prattled on about his restaurant experience to someone on the phone. This man looked like he had no intention of hanging up and didn't even acknowledge me as I stood there for several minutes. I just put my book down and left (probably would have been his only sale for the day- oh well! Is this a business or an episode of Seinfeld? We will laugh about this for some time - especially when we eat thin, charred steak! read more

If you've ever dreamed of owning a bookstore, this is probably what it was like in your dreams. Books on top of books, every door leads to another pantheon of books. There's a friendly cat and even though I am a dog person, it just feels right. It smells like honest old books. The gentlemen running the store, who both look like they were booksellers in a Dickens novel, were friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. I didn't get to stay long, but the next time I go, I will. Great book store in a restoration area of the city, near the Underground coffee shop. The staff is extremely nice and very helpful. The special editions or rare prints are locked up in the back--just ask for access. The sci-fi selection is pretty good and the philosophy section wasn't bad. I love this bookstore. I know, I know...I always love bookstores. It's pretty hard to rub me the wrong way if you're a local, independent seller of books or CDs, but Rhino is a genuinely awesome place to shop. The guys who run Rhino are very knowledgeable and approachable, and, while one of them seems a bit more ornery than the other, they both always get excited when you ask them about books. I went into Rhino today without anything specific in mind. I have been trying to hunt down a copy of Michael Moorcock's "Behold the Man" for a while, and though they didn't have it (no biggie...nobody ever does), they found it on Amazon for me for just $0.84. They have thousands of books shelved in a pretty organized manner, and their sections range from extremely general (Sci-Fi, etc.) to very specific (Furniture Renovation, etc.). When it comes to popular books, the guys at Rhino typically have several different editions; that way, you can buy a cheap paperback for yourself or spring for a collector's edition as a gift or an investment. I thumbed through a collection of Annie Leibowitz photography for a while before perusing Vonnegut's work. I ended up buying a copy of "Cat's Cradle," of which they had a handful of copies. Rhino is located in kind of a random spot...I wouldn't normally think of Charlotte Ave. when it comes to really neat bookstores. But this place is genuinely the coolest. They play great World and folk music, and there are a few comfy chairs where you can nestle down and check out your copy of Poe before purchasing it. They also have a sale going on right now: buy three books, get one free! Pretty sweet deal. I'd check this place out if I were you. read more

Lone store worker (owner?) polite when I asked if there was a Christian fiction section. He directed me to nonfiction section which was impressive. Great book selection. Books up to the ceiling. Sweet kitty . Lanes between shelves narrow so hard to see it all. A moment after we came in, very discordant solo saxophone music played over the speakers, nothing I have ever heard in any other store. Had to put in my earplugs. John noticed a "We support ACLU" plaque in the store, which he said is not baby-boomer or Christian friendly. So we wondered if the saxophone music he played was a nudge for us to leave ASAP since we were nearly the only ones in the store at the time. If such is the case we will be glad to comply and not darken the doorway of this bookstore any more. I have recently seen about ten videos on youtube which may influence the younger folks that baby boomers/seniors are the worst generation of all for many, uh, valid reasons. This is the same mentality as racial prejudice. I hope I am wrong about what I was thinking. If so I apologize. read more

The cutest and sweetest lil bookstore in Nashville! I spent a good chunk of my day here, Headquarters coffee in hand, slowly browsing my way through this mini wonderland. The books here are old and beautiful artifacts that felt good in my hands. They made me want to read, to create, to time travel. This little place is really great! I have been looking for Pearl S Buck books (my dad did a pretty good job of cleaning out every used bookstore in Nashville) and when I came to visit, he brought me to this little gem. I found a hard-to-find Buck book and the guys gave me a great price. It is exactly how you picture a great used bookstore to be- shelves and shelves and shelves of books with books stuffed in nooks and crannies everywhere. The store is also much bigger than it appears from the front. I just kept wandering further and further back. It's also pretty well organized. I didn't know about the locked room with first editions... next time I'm in town I will check that out! Really, you could spend quite a while in here browsing and finding all sorts of treasures. Rhino is probably the least pretentious little used bookstore, and yes, this is a good thing. They have a nice location on Charlotte, and their presence there is paving the way for more good stores to move in. I didn't ever go to their old location on Murphy, and I feel kind of guilty about that, but I really like a lot of things about this store. They have a good collection of books, both regular used books and collector's pieces. I was impressed by some of the hard to come by photography books. There are nice niche bookstores all over Nashville and some cool spots for new books as well. Then there's the giant that is McKays that can't be matched in terms of mass quantity and ease of selling or trading used books and media. Yet finding Rhino was a boon. This place is great and is everything you could want in a hip used bookstore. Walking in I was almost overwhelmed with choices. The aisles are a bit tight so if their busy it can get difficult to navigate your browsing without running into another customer but if you keep at it you'll quickly notice section after section of meticulously organized genres. Looking at one shelf you'll catch your eye pulled to another and have to remind yourself to focus on one thing at at a time. Such a good selection with collector grail around every corner---polybagged 1960s sci-fi novels, signed hardcover 1st edition crime novels, literary theory, Native American history, out of print cult authors, anything a readers heart could desire. Friendly but non-obtrusive service, a few crates of excellent but fairly priced vinyl records, and a bookstore cat what's not to love? read more

Just when I thought Rhino couldn't get much better, I discovered the tiny classics room. And then the the guy working there showed me the locked back room, which is full of rare books and first editions, from "On the Road" to "Harry Potter." He was a really nice guy, but I couldn't help but be a little jealous of him for getting to spend his days in the presence of Rhino's great collection of hard-to-find books. It's obvious that the owner and staff of Rhino love books. The other customers were all grad student or history buff-types with bad ties and scuffed-up shoes. In other words, they were perfect. The setup is kind of confusing and not all of the sections are alphabetized, so I'd recommend asking a staff member for help if you're looking for something specific. Prices are very reasonable: $4-$6 paperbacks and $9-$15 hardbacks. I was surprised not to find any W.C. Williams or Stephen Dunn in the poetry section, and only one Virginia Woolf novel in the fiction section, so the selection might be kind of random and unpredictable (which makes sense for a used bookstore.) But I'll definitely back when I have a few spare hours to spend looking around. Unique attractions include a box of old Dr. Seuss books, and entire sections devoted to Sherlock Holmes, Native Americans, and mysteries. read more

Hands down Rhino has one of the best selections anywhere. They pay fair prices and happily look for books if you call. No its not the Strand or Powell's. Through the years, my wife and I have visited hundreds of used bookstores from Los Angeles to Bath, Maine. We have to say that Rhino Books on Charlotte in Nashville is one of the best used bookstores in the country. The book collection touches a wide variety of subjects, some mainstream, some quirky, and some sublime. In other words, there's something there for every reading taste and then some. Rhino is a locally owned and operated bookstore which helps Nashville's economy. And the owner is a noted singer and songwriter, so be prepared to see musical instruments hanging around his bookstore. You might even walk in one day and find him strumming his guitar and working on his latest tune. What better way to connect a Nashville bookstore with the performing arts? And speaking of perfoming arts, the owner and his staff are not only well versed about books, but also about music and film. The more i visit Rhino Booksellers, it enriches my heart with all of the character, color, smell and responsive employees. (who's love of books & reading are obvious !). The layout of the Sylvan Park location is cozy, intimate- with a tremendous selection. Some very rare. I suggest taking some time & explore this great Nashville Bookstore.
