Spent way too much money in here
Angie T.

I loved this adorable little book shop in East Nashville. We were a little early for our dinner reservations and my daughter suggested we pop in here. We quickly lost track of time as we both tend to do in bookstores, because, well, books! If all my dreams came true, I'd own a shop just like this one-colorful and cozy, with books all the way up to the ceiling, well lit with soft ambient, lighting and quirky book lover gifts, puzzles, advent calendars and tons of stationary. I was sad when it was time to leave, but not before I spent a small fortune here. It was worth every penny.

Books, books, beautiful books!!

Just the cutest spot! This shop is little but packs a wallop. The staff are so kind with recommendations! You can shop in store or they have a great website for ordering books for pick-up. It is so important to support local bookstores - even though it can be tempting to get cheap books online. It is just so much more special to buy them from someone who really loves books!! I appreciate that The Bookshop is so supportive of the Nashville nonprofit community - they host a Second Sunday fundraiser every month that donates 10% of their sales to a local nonprofit. What a generous practice! It makes shopping on those days feel even better because you get to support local and support nonprofits. Thank you, The Bookshop!

The Bookshop in East Nashville isn't just a place to buy books - it's a place to be with them. From the moment you walk in, there's a quiet, intentional warmth that invites you to slow down. Unlike overwhelming chain bookstores, every title here feels handpicked, carefully chosen to spark curiosity, comfort, or a much-needed escape. There are highlighted local authors and sometimes signed copies of books. The space is small but beautifully organized. The staff are kind, thoughtful, and always ready to help. They even have fun touches like "Mystery Date with a Book," where you take home a surprise read wrapped in brown paper. Whether you're looking for a gift for you or someone else - something soul-nourishing, thought-provoking, or just beautifully written, this place delivers. You leave with that feeling of having been somewhere else and more relaxed after - mini vacay vibes?! Will be back!

Great bookshop in East Nashville. Packed full of many new and interesting titles. Several non book gift items as well.

Such a cute aesthetic bookstore. I love that they are connected to a coffeeshop. Highly recommend for a chill day of browsing books with a delicious beverage.

The woman working was wonderful. The place is very small and at first I was disappointed but once I started looking around I fell in love. It's so well curated I wanted almost every book I touched. Really thoughtful and impressive selection of books. Many gorgeous gift books too. There's a coffee shop next door which is lovely also.

Great book selection, wonderfully organized, bright space- a wonderful place to stretch your brain.

As a lover of indy bookstores, this is a gem. Smallish but so well stocked! Well curated selection of poetry too.

Such a sweet book store! So welcoming and neighbors with a coffee shop! Match made in heaven! They handled my preorder so easily and communicated effectively- can't wait to come back!

Love the aesthetic and has a good selection of classics and trendy books! Next time I want to try the blind book in a bag, that looked exciting. Check this place out!

If you love this place, then you totally understand the hype to it however, if you're like me and…read moreyou were introduced to this from another person who absolutely adores it, but you don't care for places like this you find it confusing. So this is a massive bookstore, music store, video store, toy store that specializes in buying used items and reselling them. So if you have an aversion to musty dirty used items, this is not your place. Which I happen to have. However, this is not McKay's fault. It is a great place to offload things you don't need and get a little cash on the side. I have a touch of sensory bias, which is why it's difficult for me to enjoy it. But I totally understand why others do. If you are planning on selling stuff, make sure you get there early. If not, when they open there will be a line not of people wanting to sell stuff just people wanting to get in there to check out anything new that came in the night before. It is always busy so do not expect to come and it not be packed. If that is an issue for you probably not your place. But a big plus is the parking lot is absolutely massive. You will find a parking spot regardless of how busy it is. And to that I give it five stars.

I was so excited to get back to McKay's for the first time in years. I was completely taken aback…read moreby the prices of books here now. Many books I found were overpriced for used books. There's no pricing system based on book condition, which would be nice. You may find a book in fair condition and pay the same amount for the same book in excellent condition. Customer service was great as always.

Randy is a great guy. Don't listen to bad reviews. Those people are mental. Probably the best book…read morestore in all of nashville especially if you like antiques. I've been going for years and I've never been disappointed. He's very helpful. Maybe some people just have a bad attitude or they take him the wrong way and get their little fragile feelings hurt. Just disagree with his opinions if you don't like it and move on. Some people are way too judgemental, if you wanna spew your political opinions then open your own store. Anyway, he can drive a hard bargain for some books but he's often willing to come down on the price and make deals. I've never had a bad experience.

Pricing placement inconsistent. Some are written inside the cover. Some are on stickers stuck to the cover. Leather bound books in antique cases and stacks of old maps facing external windows and exposed to direct sunlight Clerk was loudly speculating on what another customer might have stolen or damaged the second he left after speaking to them. Came up besides me to peer out the windows muttering as she wondered which way he went. Owner loudly speaking at length on the phone about the brilliance of Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest, famous ignorant brute. Audible from every part of the store. Children's books were only kept in the furthest sections from the door and counter, on the top two shelves. Shelves and sections poorly marked. I asked the clerk where I could find anything by Robert E. Howard. She said she didn't know where anything was in here and brought me to ask the owner. When I asked where to find anything by Robert Howard, he just sneered at me and asked what kind of author that was. I explained he was a fantasy and historical fiction author and contemporary of Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose works I had been able to find. The owner waved me away and said at the end of the aisle there were a few fantasy books but he usually doesn't keep that kind of thing. We were standing next to a leather bound collection of stories of the Knights of the Round Table. When I got to the directed section, there was a single hardback collection of Harry Potter stacked neatly and a few produce boxes of 1965-1985 pulp science fiction novels, mostly missing their covers, haphazardly stacked on top of each other and bending and warping the books underneath. The shelf next to it was empty. Ends of shelves were crowded with printed out memes taped up in place, some self-congratulatory about being one of the few people in this day and age who still read, some fart jokes, some complaining about President Biden, and some suggesting that there were more white slaves captured and brought from Persia than black slaves brought from Africa. They have a lot of old and rare books, yes, but they don't take care of them, do not preserve collections consistently, do not sort their books into accessible formats, and do not provide a welcoming environment for incoming patrons.
