It has been 15 years since the first time I hiked Arrow Canyon and I didn't remember how hard it is…read moreon the feet. First off, follow April's directions. They are spot on. At one time there was a dispute about the right of way to get to the canyon. The owner of the house attempted to block people from using the road around his house. It is a public road because it goes to a community well. Stay on the dirt road and don't go on any of the red dirt that are his two driveways. Just before the well house, the access road makes a right and goes down a short grade. Beyond here is the low clearance parking. Don't go further unless you have a high clearance vehicle. 4 wheel drive is not needed. As you start the hike from the trailhead, you'll notice that there's a lot of gravel and some large rocks. For the first part of the hike to the slot canyon, there are use trails on thje higher ground where there are brown weeds. Use these trails--your feet will thank you. When you get to the slot canyon, you have to walk on the rocks. After entering the rock canyon, look to your right and you'll see some Indian petroglyphs but also a lot of names scratched into the rocks by people who have hiked the canyon. The genuine rock art is generally lighter in definition because of repatination. The lighter figures and drawings are newer and are not genuine Indian rock art. The hike continues and you come to an area where a side canyon enters the main one. Don't turn left--keep going straight around the large mound of large rocks washed there in flash flooding. You'll soon come to what's known as Swamp Cave, a climbing destination. The rock face has a lot of bolts and carabiners into which the climbers string their ropes. About a mile from the cave, you get to the halfway point when you reach the check dam built by the CCC in the 1930s. This is the end of the hike for most people although there's a rope and a fixed bolt on the rock for those who want to get to the top of the dam. I do not recommend that. You never know the age or condition of the rope. Take the time for a snack at the dam. Then head back to your car. The hike is listed as 5 miles. The two of us each had 5.9 miles on our wrist measuring devices. Arrow Canyon is an historical place and a good hike. Treat the history well. Also, wear hiking boots. Don't try to hike this in sneakers unless you want very sore feet. Happy hiking!

We have done this hike at least once a year for the last 3 years, the first time we used a car so…read morethe hike was much further but if you use a high clearance vehicle you can get to the actual trailhead. If coming from Vegas, take 15 North to the Glendale exit near Moapa, take Route 168 about 11 miles until you see a house alone on the left with a gate to a dirt road. The dirt road will take you around the house to the road you will need a high clearance vehicle for, it's windy and rocky so be careful but it takes you to the trailhead, you can't drive any further. We've been the only people out here hiking at times so make sure your prepared for anything. The hike round trip is about 5 miles, pretty much no elevation change. There is a slot canyon section with petroglyphs so keep your eyes open as not to miss a thing. The turn around point is a dam, if you're a rock climber you can probably go further but we have our dog with us and never have. It can get muddy since it's basically a wash but the majority of the trail is rock. It's a fun and interesting hike...I can't believe it's not on here, I want to keep it to myself but I want you to experience it as well!

We were happy to have the covered picnic area enjoyed our fruit and wonder what it would be like with multiple games going on?? I was impressed with the cleanliness of Mesquite over all as well. The trails are easy to find and all are found starting from this main spot. Note they are not…read morepaved. The trails themselves have a lot of dirt and rocks, and don't offer the best views of flowers. However, if you time it right you may see some wildlife like lizards and tortoises. You can get a great overview of the city from here. Bathrooms were dirty. Signage was good and informative. There are a few benches and a picnic shaded area as well.

This event offered a 35, 65, and 90 option. I signed up for the 90. This event says it's capped…read moreat 500. There were not 500 people there so I'm not sure why they closed down the online registration a day early and said it was full on the website, but they were still taking onsite registration that day. That aside the information offered on their website including what to expect from beginning to end were spot on from arrival to SAG support information to what to expect on each route. Red Rock Bicycle is the sponsor of the event. Driving from Vegas the morning of the race we were about 15 minutes late to start so we missed the coffee and muffins at the start line. The first rest stop at 22.5 miles was pretty packed. I would say they definitely could have used some more porta pottys at that location. This stop was also more off the side of the road, and I'm not one to lie my bike in dirt so I didn't venture to see what was being offered nutrition wise at the tables. The remaining rest stops 45.5 miles 54.2 and 63.5 had bike racks minus the unmanned station at 54.2. That one was a table with water tanks available. Fair enough, because at that point there were less cyclist as due to the weather conditions that day, and from what I heard, 35 and 65 became a more popular choice even if already signed up for 90. These stops offered nutrition basics, peanut butter, pickles, cookies, trail mix, candy, meat, cheese and roasted potatoes, which were awesome! They had a roulette wheel at one stop where you spun for prizes. Unfortunately, I forgot to collect mine at the finish line. The website said SAG support was from 8-5. They went above and beyond in this area. The weather conditions for the day were winds predicted up to 20 MPH so at the start of the race I asked if I threw in the towel would I be picked up and I was assured I would. It was comforting during the ride to see constant roving SAG support assisting riders and correcting a couple map mishaps in the first 20 miles of the ride. They were also very apologetic about the map mistakes, but honestly once you've signed up for 90 if you accidentally add .5 to your ride it's not a big deal. At the end of the ride we were provided with nutrition bars and a pulled pork sandwich, beans and coleslaw. I know this is an event and not necessarily a race but to be fair I don't think if you were picked up in a SAG vehicle and dropped off and missed a few miles of the race your times should be included in the overall result times as having completed something when you didn't.

Like so many little girls, I was infatuated with horses. I found myself consumed with them through…read morebooks, figurines, and tv shows. I begged my mom for lessons growing up, but she couldn't afford them. However, she signed me up for a couple of trail rides and they're a core memory. Two decades later and my affinity for horses hasn't wavered, mostly because I moved to Saint George--a town where I'm surrounded by these gentle giants in every direction I go. Naturally, my 5-year-old daughter loves horses too and wanted to take lessons. I took her to a different facility that showed a bunch of red flags, so we didn't go back there. Then, I found Shauna at Haskell Riding Academy and instantly clicked with her when we met. What started as an inquiry for my daughter ended up with me taking lessons instead. I started riding with Shauna two months ago and it has quickly become my favorite form of therapy. My stress instantly turns to stillness at the stable gates. Anyone can benefit from being in the presence of these sensitive souls--they're very healing beings. I highly recommend getting lessons with Shauna. Learning a new skill as an adult can be intimidating, but she's very patient, kind, and knowledgeable. I really appreciate how particular she is about doing things. She'll always explain why she does it a certain way, and it always makes perfect sense. There's a reason her horses age gracefully, like Tag who I've been riding. He's in such great shape, I would have never guessed he's 29! Also, some of her horses have blue eyes/pink skin and they wear protective masks to reduce their risk of cancer. These are just a couple testaments to how much she loves and cares for her horses. Here's a photo of me and my daughter, Shauna let her join me at the end of my lesson. It was such a nice surprise, my daughter loved it. I'm looking forward to growing as a rider and can't wait for my daughter to start riding when she's a bit older. I know she'll be in good hands with Shauna!

It would appear the one size fits all is the newer part of the park because it actually has a very nice walking path that goes all the way around the outside. It is also about 50% bigger than the small and the big dog park combined. Plenty of water in all of the parks as well as poop bag dispensers and trash cans. Or metal trash poles depending on where you like to stick it? All the Parks have a nice shaded seating area as well as multiple benches spaced around the parks. There's a nice little parking lot right next to the big and small dog park as well as street parking. But it is by far the biggest and most enjoyable dog park in mesquite!
