I felt lucky coming out of the appointment (Dr. Amanda Brewer) with a healthy eye opinion and a reasonable progressive prescription. After a few months of using my new spectacles, I noticed that my eyesight was actually getting worse. So back to Dr. Brewer I went to look at my prescription. What she found instead was that my cataracts had grown, and it was time for surgery. She then referred me to Dr. Caleb Morris at Nevada Eye Consultants. Nevada Eye Consultants is quite an operation, full of patients, doctors, and support staff. I was efficiently shuttled from room-to-room including another eye exam, some follow-up, 1:1 time with Dr. Morris, and the insurance person. This experience kind of reminded me of taking my then step-daughter to the Orthodontist to see if braces were required. The visit being 1 part Doctor and an equal part being treatment and financing options. I thought Dr. Morris was great and as another review rightly stated: From consultation to surgery day and follow up- professional, clean, communicative. Note that Surgery is done next door at the Eye Surgery Center of Northern Nevada.

Immediately post op my corneal flap "moved" and they had to take me back again to fix it. I was not medicated enough for the procedure, though I should have spoken up they could have assessed me better. The dry eye was pretty significant for almost a year. I did not have astigmatism prior to my LASIK; I now have irregular astigmatism in both eyes caused by complications from this procedure- either due to dry eye or incorrect measurement during procedure. I regret getting it. Just do your research. The office was friendly.

This doctor will operate on anyone willing to cut him a check. Regardless of whether or not they are a candidate for Lasik. His office is an assembly line. You are just a number. They care not at all about your well being. Lasik is a voluntary procedure- you sign a waiver saying this. That's fine. You accept the risk as we did. But you trust a medical doctor to inform you if it is reasonable to proceed. My husband was never a candidate for the procedure yet Rothman operated anyway. After my husband's failed procedure, Rothman recommended additional surgeries. Not to save my husband's sight. But instead to save his own ass. This made matters worse and created a situation where his corneas were unstable. When we fought them on the corrections, we were immediately given a full refund. No questions asked. A paltry sum in exchange for destroying my husband's sight- a builder and father of two. But with anything that is elective, that is your recourse. We have lived through ten years of over two dozen additional surgeries to try to save his corneas. We've seen specialists at UC Davis for scleral lenses to correct the corneal ectasia caused by Dr Rothman and we are currently doing everything possible to avoid complete corneal transplants due to this doctors incompetence. Other trained surgeons in the Reno area call the patients unfortunate enough to endure surgery at Lasik of Reno "Rothman's Rejects". And no I'm not kidding. Some surgeons and doctors in this area will refuse to see you if you've let him operate on you. Please don't trust these people to touch your eyes.

I called the office based on a referral from my primary care provider to stay 'in network' to ensure I was covered by insurance. I asked if I was covered, provided my insurance plan name and number, was put on hold, and then told I would just owe a co-pay for the visit. I was very explicit too because I told them I was out of work at the moment and can't afford to pay for extra expenses. Since they said I just had a co-pay, I agreed and scheduled the visit about 3 weeks later. The week prior, I called to confirm they received the referral and confirm I was covered. They indicated they had not received the referral even though two weeks had passed. I called my primary care provider and confirmed they had sent it originally, but also asked them to fax it in again and specifically to ensure it referred to the specific issue I was being seen for to ensure I was covered. I show up the day of the appointment and confirmed before doing anything else that they did in fact receive the referral. However, as I filled out the paperwork I noticed they listed me as uninsured. I immediately asked one of the customer service reps at the front desk that in fact I had insurance and you had previously confirmed I was covered for the visit. They said 'yes no problem we have your insurance information, you are good to go'. I then met with the doctor and as I left I asked front desk that I needed to pay my co-pay for the visit and they said 'oh there is nothing at this point we will bill your insurance and whatever they don't cover you will owe'. I then got very concerned and said I was told it was just a co-pay for the basic office visit. They refused to tell me how much they were going to bill. I told them right there that wasn't right because I could have shopped around if I had known I wasn't covered and said to them I hope there isn't a huge bill because I am out of a job right now. While the overall exam and procedure the by Dr. provided was smooth, I noticed after the fact that what was done on one eye was also not done on the other eye and that other eye was not doing as well as the eye that was taken care of. In reality both eyes should have been done since I'm pretty sure for that procedure, both will be billed. I then called in the next day to request another appointment to address the other eye, but said I needed to confirm what the cost would be since there is no way I'm going to come in again with the possibility of not being covered by insurance. They refused to indicate the cost and the rep on the phone unwittingly spilled the beans and said 'oh it doesn't look like your insurance is covered because you have a deductible'. I said, I know that, but I do have co-pay coverage for 'specialist' office visits and since this was a referral for a specific eye issue and your office originally said I was covered with just a co-pay, BEFORE I SCHEDULED, that this was completely wrong. They argued with me about this for a bit, and but then reluctantly agreed to confirm what the cost of the next visit would be and would call me back the next day. Well, it's been over a week and I never got a call back. I'm pretty sure they will never call me back. I'm now waiting for what could be a bill I can't afford and am in limbo about what to do next with my other eye. This office needs to get its act together. I now get the impression that front office staff are just following standard operating scripts to just tell people they are covered and do whatever it takes to get them scheduled to bring in new business. Federal law requires 'no surprise billing' as of a few years ago and since I had on several occasions asked and confirmed I was covered, they likely broke the law. Crazy that before this law, medical providers could in fact intentionally not disclose all costs up front for elective services, but not anymore. What ultimately this robbed me of was being able to shop around since this was a 'referral' and I could have asked other out of network providers what their real cost was for this basic exam and procedure was and then either choose the best provider based on cost, or choose not to do it all if could not afford it.

I would suggest that anyone taking this procedure take at least five days off of work, and have someone available to take care of you for at least 24 hours. Just in case! Staff members are unreliable at giving calls back! I am unaware if they are overworked, but repeatedly I had to call back in to get responses to questions and concerns I had when they had told me explicitly they would give me a call back. Gives me the impression I am not worth the time. If I were to do the procedure over again, I would have chosen another reputable doctor without the "celebrity like" reputation. With Dr. Rothman's reputation I figured I could not go wrong! Dr. Rothman is a very nice person and did a good job. But during the procedure he rushed through one of my eyes which resulted in "not as good results", without the possibility of revision(which, I was told by the MD in his office exam room nine months after my initial procedure). For, $4200, I was left with my primary ophthalmologist still suggesting glasses for my after procedure vision. I declined glasses due to the reality I could not afford this along with still paying my monthly payment for surgery. Please shop around before choosing a doctor to work on your eyes! They are far too precious to do anything else!

This was concerning, so I visited my primary care physician on a Wednesday morning. He was concerned if there was a possibility of a detached retina and encouraged me to get an eye exam appointment in the next 24-48 hours. He suggested an opthalmologist and sent an urgent referral. He said to call the opthalmologist office to schedule right away. He also said that if I couldn't get an appointment to try an optometrist because if it's a detached retina, it was critical. I called the opthalmologist office and they said they did not receive the referral and that they'll call me when they do. So my next call was to the HMO's referral coordinator to ask what are my next steps. They found my referral and said they'll send it right away and that the opthalmologist office should have the referral in about 20 minutes. I called the opthalmologist office about an hour later and got their voice mail. Left a message that my primary care physician said this was urgent that I needed to make an appointment as soon as possible. I called again on Thursday and was told when their intake coordinator receives my referral, that she will call me. I called my optometrist but also had to leave a message. Needless to say, I got to see my optometrist on Friday and the eye exam didn't show a detached retina. I did finally receive a call from Family Eyecare Associates on Monday afternoon, and since I didn't need to visit, there was no need to schedule an appointment. Bottom line, I'm sure this business is busy, but does a referral marked Urgent make a difference? Who knows.
