After a multi year hiatus, I've found my way back to Dr. Winkelman, the "Costco" eye doctor, and let me tell you, I'm so happy with my decision. To be honest, I wasn't planning to ever leave, and only did because I thought they didn't take my insurance. So when I learned my eye doctor couldn't see me for my annual appointment for 3 months, I immediately checked back here and found both availability AND that they accept my insurance, so I went all in. I love the convenient location, fixed pricing for exams, ease of applying my insurance and the convenience of Costco optical right outside the door! Office is kept clean and comfortable. My appointment was right on time and the doctor was very efficient with the time. He offered good information about my eye health as well, and went one step further to share how he is able to support his patient's in the cast prescriptions, supplies, etc. run up sooner than anticipated. I'm super satisfied with this decision and experience. As far as I'm concerned, seeing this eye doc may as well be called a life hack. read more

waste of time and money! "comprehensive exam" - not! all he did was have me look at a series of charts with black letters on a white background and asked between the 2 each time which one was clearer. told him i had a floatie in my left eye and he never commented on it during the visit. he looked in my eyes and said beginning of cataracts but no need to do any thing for 3 years. but then as i was getting ready to leave he said check back in a year, year and a half. then he said "next july" - 1 year out. seemed he didn't have a clue about the cataracts. took the prescription to optical. picked out frames and ordered 2 pair progressive and 1 polarized single vision distance sun glasses. picked them up the following week and as i was driving out of the parking lot wearing the sunglasses saw a guy on the corner holding a sign panhandling. i was 5 cars back and could not read the sign. i couldn't read the sign at all until i was right next to him. as i went down the street could not read the street sign (plumb ln) until i was at the intersection and not very clearly. as i was driving home could not read any traffic signs, street signs, signs along the street or anything else and all the street lights were blurry - all just a complete blur. tried on the progressive glasses and that distance lense was no better. put on my non-prescription sunglasses and could see better - but not clearly. called his office and had to go back as a walk in as no appointments available for the next 10 days. when he saw me told him the glasses for distance were useless. he repeated the same exam and came up with the same results. i asked repeatedly why can't i see distance then with these glasses - he said "i don't get it either." took the glasses over to optical and the gal checked the prescription and alignment and all ok there. again not understanding why i couldn't see distance with these glasses - and dr. winkleman having no answer - i made an appointment with another optometrist for a second opinion. now (sorry folks!) - long story short - she did the same test he did with only very slight differences in the numbers. she then said she disagreed with him on the cataracts - she said i won't see clearly even with prescription glasses until cataracts are taken care of. she did a few other tests and said i have a small tear in each retna. she also sent me into the other room for another test to be sure there was nothing behind the floatie causing any trouble - there wasn't. she also dilated my eyes and checked them. so now i have to see a doctor first about my retnas and *then* i can have the cataract surgery. after all this her bill came to over $500 but medicare covered all but $85 (i don't have vision insurance) - less than what i paid for winkleman's "exam". think twice foks before going to dr. winkleman. p.s. - took the glasses back and got a full refund read more

This is the independent contracted optometrist inside the Reno Costco. I prefer the Reno Optometrist to the Sparks Costco. I live in Sparks and it is worth the drive for me. My family have been coming to the Costco Optometrist for several years as we switched from the Sparks one. The office is super small. It has a small desk with the receptionist right as you walk in. There are three seats in the office for clients. Then just behind the seats is a small table with a magnifying glass and a seat for a client to try on contact lenses. Doctor Winkelman is kind, friendly and thorough. He makes sure that you are aware of all your choices. Appointments are easy and convenient to make. His receptionist seems easily annoyed. There was a gentleman in a wheelchair who came to the door (as there is a little bit of a bump that made it hard for his wheelchair to go over) he tried asking for an appointment but she was on the phone and then when she hung up she ignored him. It appeared to me because she was annoyed. I like the fact that I can go to Costco and get my exam, frames, contacts and more all at one stop. As a matter of fact my whole family goes here. Several years ago we were in Disneyland and my daughter lost a contact. We were able to contact the Anaheim Costco and purchase her prescription contacts from them. What a nice perk. read more

I have been going to Dr. Winkelman for 15 or 20 years. I have always been happy with the visits. But, even with an appointment time, Dr. Winkelman rarely saw me without a little wait -- someimes up to 20 minutes. I felt that was OK. Yesterday, there was a different optometrist on duty -- a woman who's name I did not get. I was ten minutes late (first time I have been late). I was told the optometrist would not see me. No alternate time, no nothing. I guess I was being punished. What should I do? I guess I'll find a new optometrist. read more

Highly very unprofessional Optometrist in the Reno and Sparks area that doesn't care about new business. I just show up for my appointment that was made over 2.5 weeks ago to have routine eye exam. At the time of scheduling my appointment I asked (Katie, can't remember her name) if there was any paperwork that needed to be filled out and if she would like a copy of my vision insurance card so that the Doctor's office could verify insurance companies and coverages prior to the appointment. Fast forward today, I showed up for my appointment 5 minutes before. I was told by the doctor's staff that I needed to fill out paperwork and they need a copy of my vision insurance card, which I already provide to them over 2 weeks ago. After sitting there in the office for almost 8 minutes passed my appointment, I was told by the doctor staff that they never confirmed with the insurance carrier and I would need to either pay for the appointment and deal with the insurance company for reimbursement or reschedule the appointment that I made. I wouldn't waste my time with Dr. Rick G Winkelman and his office, very unprofessional, and they treat you like you don't deserve to be their. The front desk girl couldn't even say "how are you doing this morning or welcome to our office" when I walked through there sliding glass door! Instead they treat their new customer like this, "do you have appointment" was the first thing that came out of the employees mouth with no smile, nothing. Easy peasy. Very nice doctor who suggested that I try a new tact - mono-vision. One contact lens for far vision in one eye and one for up close reading in the other eye. HELLO. No more reading glasses. I'd been hesitant to use any version of bi-focals (either in contacts or glasses) after so many friends complained how hard it was to get used to. I am now on my computer sans reading glasses for the first time in years. I CAN SEE THE LIGHT! LOL. I don't have insurance for eyecare, so his $119 for an annual check up is fair enough. read more

I was looking for a new optometrist last October to get some contacts. I had my previous records with me and was in Costco.....so.... I went up the optical counter and asked if the previous records could be used. The gentleman said it was close because they were almost 6 months old, but let's check with the doctor to be sure. He asked Dr Winkelman and he said they were still good. What really surprised me was the dr asked if I would like to have a contact fitting right now. YES! What great service. I planned on making my yearly check up here today and my insurance tells me he's not on my list. How disappointing. Dr Winkelman was so nice and so was the staff. Had two experiences recently with Dr. Winkelman and both rate a five-start review. The first one was my 15 year old daughter needing an eye check up before she heads off to Italy for a year long Rotary exchange. He gave her a thorough exam and actually made it a pleasant experience for her. She had a smile on her face and found him to be warm and very professional. A few days later my wife woke up early in the morning in pain crying that she couldn't see out of her right eye. When we called Dr. Winkelman's office he said come right in and I'll see you right away. We got there and she went right in. She had a corneal ulcer which could cause eyesight loss if not losing the eye itself if not treated promptly and correctly. He gave her a prescription and instructions to come in the next morning. When she returned, he saw her right away. Within a few days and yet another visit, everything cleared up. What struck me was his genuine caring demeanor when dealing with both my daughter and my wife. I highly recommend him to anyone and everyone. read more

All i can say is ....my experience with this eye doctor was a WASTE OF MONEY AND A WASTE OF MY TIME. If you are coming there for BIFOCAL contact lenses.... forget about it!! I never learned my lesson... my first bad experience was when we first moved here in Reno 4 yrs ago. And then same or even worst experience on my second time. Unfortunately i don't have much options only because of the pandemic . My eye doctor was closed and my prescription expired. - i even brought a copy of my old prescription ( which by the way works good ) to make it more easy for him.( but no!) - 1st visit - he switched my LH to my RH prescription... obviously i cannot read nor see from distance. - 2nd visit - went back to the office ... no samples available i have to wait 2 weeks ... only to find out still not working ... still blurry. -3rd visit- the assistant just want me to pick up samples without even trying it on in the clinic if it will work. -4th visit .. Doctor insisted my old prescription was wrong!' Fine... that is why i'm here so you can correct ( though my old prescription was perfectly worked for me)... check my eyes decided to give me mono vision lens ... -4th visit... i got a call telling me sample is available that day.... only to find out the office was closed without any prior notification except for the sign on the glass door. Another time wasted. After few weeks i was able to re - schedule and that time i promise myself that will be my last time i will set my foot in that office. Every time i will go to his office to complain , he will tell me " don't worry we will give more FREE samples" .... and i finally so upset and told him " I DON'T need free contact lens.... I want my freaking right prescription!!!! Nothing is free because you are wasting so much of my time. From the first time i went there on June .... it took me more than 3 months and still i didn't get my correct prescription.... so finally gave up contacting him on September. There goes my $169 for nothing but wrong samples!!!..... What a nightmare!!!! So please if you value your time don't go to this doctor.... read more

I went to see Dr Winkelman for the first time in a recommendation from my husband. What a great guy! Very thorough and asked all the right questions. I was very satisfied with my exam. The young man who was checking patients in was wonderful as well. It's great to be able to have your exam and then go right to Costco's optical department and choose new glasses. Let me just say this this is the worst office experience I have ever had. I called weekly to see if my trial contacts were there and were told no. I would leave voicemails and never get called back. Then when I got a person months I mean like 4 months later she's all "yeah they be been here." Then I was dime the doctor was in till 630pm. I showed up at 530pm and alas the doctor was only there till 530pm. Thanks for the miscommunication and waisting my time. The docs great but his front office staff (2 girls I think) is retarded). I just called 4 times to try and set up at eye exam. The first time it rang a million times (which I understand, they are busy) but then someone answered and hung up. The second time a male employee answered option 1 and confirmed there was someone in still working optical and I was transferred to optical again but my call went to voicemail shortly after. The third time I talked to yet a female employee (again option 1) who transferred me again and said optical would answer and I got voicemail. The fourth time was the same deal. Making an appointment should not be this hard and the lady employee I talked to was a bit snappy. I can take my family of 4 elsewhere, thank you very much. P.S My family has been buying glasses here for a while and it was our favorite place but over the course of the years quality of service has lacked. I used to work at an Opticians office as assistant manager and am a bit shocked the employees here would rather hang up on patients/customers rather then take a 5 minute call. read more

I was looking for a new optometrist (since my old one is a $500 plane ride away now) and decided to look on Yelp for recommendations. I read some other reviews but since I am a Costco member and was going there anyway, I made an appointment and I couldn't be happier that I did. Dr. Winkelman was knowledgeable, thorough and incredibly helpful! Not only did I get a new prescription for glasses and contacts, he totally hooked me up with free lens solution and 2 months worth of lenses for me to try out. I'm sure it costs money to give out free contacts, but the idea that an optometrist would let you try before you buy is ingenious! Why hasn't any optometrist done that for me before? My last set bothered the hell out of me and I had to get new one$. I highly recommend Dr. Winkelman if you don't have an eye doctor and/or are unhappy with your current one! Not only is he a great doctor, but Costco also has incredibly low prices on contact lenses, lower than all the usual suspects and while online ordering is convenient, I like the idea of being able to just walk in and buy my contacts rather than waiting for a box to arrive. read more

Extremely friendly and efficient, plus he gave me a bunch of different types of contacts to sample! I always thought you had to have a Costco membership to use this service but he is actually independent... my roommate told me about him and I definitely have not looked back. They have a lot of scheduling flexibility and do walk-ins as well, which is extremely convenient... I got out of a meeting late and had to miss my appointment but they told me to come in anyways and it wasn't much of a wait. Dr. Winkelman is beyong the best! He is quick and most important accurate. I have seen him more than once and only once had to go back for minor adjustment after trials came. My astigmatism required ordering samples. He always double checks and knows his products. The new receptionist Kaylie rocks as well. She always is happy and upbeat. This year in a hurry I tried another provider that messed me up really bad and Dr. Winkelman fit me in and made the correction. Magically, I am not going blind and can see. Today was my first time here and I can not say enough great things. For one they get you in and out of there in no time but it was by far the most accurate eye exam I have ever had. I could not believe how he was able to just look at my eye with a light and almost know exactly what my prescription was. I will never go anywhere else and highly recommend to everyone! This is more about the office than the exam itself. When you get the exam Dr. Winkelman gives you some free contacts. If he has to special order then because he doesn't have them in stock it is an additional $20 on top of the eye exam. I had my exam on 3/13 and was told it would take about a week to get the contacts that he had to order come in. I'm 3/25 I still haven't heard from the office so I called and they said they were still not in. Okay. Another week and a half later I call on 4/3 I still haven't heard anything. So I call into the office and my contacts are in. I ask when did they get in and magically they came in on 4/2. So I go in today to go pick them up from the office and when I pick them up on the slip of paper it says they were received in on 3/19. I AM FURIOUS. Why on earth did I one not receive a phone call when they came in, two why did they lady lie and say they came in yesterday, and finally why did I pay an additional amount of money for the office giving me the ring around for 3 weeks. This was my first time using a Costco optometrist. I previously went to an optometrist that conducted much more tests, but was considerably more expensive. My major problem is my prescription has resulted in blurry vision at far distances. It's fine for TV watching but I can't read any road signs on the highway until I get fairly close. This is the first time I've had this problem. I'll be looking elsewhere for my next prescription. read more

I had a lovely experience at Mr. Winkelman's office, as he and his staff were warm, sincere, and accommodating (which I usually don't experience in medical settings). This Optometrist was probably one of the more competent ones I have been examined by as well, seeing as he was knowledgeable about my obscure neurological visual symptoms that my previous Optometrists had never even heard of. Although I have only been seen by him once so far, from the interactions I have witnessed in his waiting room he seems to have a wonderful rapport with many returning clients, and I am looking forward to becoming one of them in the near future when I decide to switch to contacts. read more

Had to add my review,this guy is on target. I would recommend him for your eye appointment needs 100 percent. The office location is weird but don't let that be offputting. He was the first eye doctor who actually cared that I was having trouble with irritation from contacts and made a concerted effort to find me a brand that didn't irritate my eyes - unlike others who make getting the right fit and brand some sort of secret magical guessing game - largely based on how much they can sell. read more
