We couldn't have picked a more beautiful venue than the Falkirk Cultural Center for our wedding day. The grounds were absolutely stunning and the flowers were in full bloom, and the combination of the lush outdoor ceremony space and the elegant indoor cocktail area made everything feel magical and perfectly balanced. One of our favorite touches was the grand piano, which a Paella Time (catering vendor) played during our first look, it was such a unique and emotional moment. The venue itself is a gorgeous, historic Victorian house with incredible charm. We took some of our favorite photos in front of the stained glass windows, which added so much character and warmth. My wife especially loved the bridal suite, where she shared sweet first-look moments and photos with her mom and bridesmaids. It felt intimate, relaxed, and timeless. As San Rafael locals, we were so impressed by how affordable the venue was for everything it offered. Working with Patty and the entire Falkirk team was effortless--they were kind, flexible, and truly accommodating every step of the way. We feel so lucky they had our date available. I (didn't) attend a Falkirk reception last week because of their lack of accessibility, Getting to the second floor dining room was a piece of cake--a ramp leads from outside in the back of the building down a hallway and directly into the second floor. But to go further, to the upstairs art galleries would have meant a long climb up rug covered stairs, in dim light, not knowing how to cross the landing with my rollator and ultimately reach the art gallery. If I didn't want to use the stairs I was told I could be pushed in a wheelchair, outside up two long paths and somehow a door or the windows would be opened. Nevertheless I passed on the experience and didn't attend my art groups's opening reception. I think an elevator should be installed to enable the disabled to reach the galleries. This venue is stunning indeed, especially for weddings! Yet, something about it is totally creepy! Kinda reminds me of the movie "Get Out" lol. If you haven't watched it, you must watch it. Once you're inside, you just want to get out. I know it states Cultural Center, but it needs to be more multi-cultural or intercultural. The vibe is just weird. The bar area caters to their members. Question: members of what? This is quite bizarre cuz if you're attending an event here, you'll need a stiff drink or two just to get through the event ughhhh! I found Falkirk after a series of Google searches for outdoor weddings near San Francisco. Our wedding was 09/08/12 and my husband (eep! Husband! Not boyfriend! Not fiancé! Husband!!!!!) and I were super pleased with our venue choice. Pros: 1. Scenic views 2. Beth and Mike are both remarkable. I was super detailed and kept track of all of my visits to the house (pre-marriage I lived 4 hours away) and all email conversations with Beth. Beth and I had over 40 email exchanges and she was prompt and courteous throughout the entire 6 month process. My fiancé, his family, and my mom/sis met with Mike on our weekend visits. Mike was also on had the day of the wedding. 3. September is a gorgeous time to host a wedding at the garden. 4. GORGEOUS INTERIOR and EXTERIOR. We were so fortunate that the home had been entirely REPAINTED just in time for our wedding! 5. Eighty brown folding chairs on site; we rented an additional 50. 6. Perfect for intimate weddings and small receptions. 7. A few long tables and several rounds on site. We rented long tables for our family style dinner. 8. Affordable. 9. Warming kitchen on site for a caterer. 10. BYO caterer. 11. BYOB. 12. Full use of the downstairs area. 13. Bride and groom rooms available. Cons 1. Dry brush during the summer. After emailing Beth about the dry grass and brush three weeks before my wedding, she made sure the landscape was tidied up. However, a summer wedding means the area will be dry. 2. Unleveled wedding garden. 3. Vagrants on the premises. This was by far our biggest concern. Since Falkirk is a public place, people can enjoy the gardens whenever they'd like. Every time we visited the property homeless or traveling individuals were camped out all over the property. These folks meant no harm, but as a bride I had major concerns. We went to the venue at 10pm at night to check on the lighting and I tripped over a man in a sleeping bag! Yikes!!! Scary. I emailed Beth about all of these and she made sure that private event signs were posted and that all of Falkirk's buddies were politely reminded about the private event. Security was also provided for us. That was super awesome. 4. Old house=no a/c. Bring a fan! 5. All electricity was provided by one extension cord that ran to the house. What a perfect site for a semi- small wedding. We had 65 guest, but the place could easily handle double that amount. What I loved about the place is an endless list of things, but to be specific this site can handle the wedding, reception, parking, and a easy location for guest to get to. We brought our own caterer, greatpies@comcast.net, and her food was so fresh, tasty, and very diverse. I give Esther and her staff 4 stars. The mansion staff, Michael and Beth, were so helpful and very easy to work with for the entire four months we were planning this. The Falkirk is furnished in the Victorian time period with sofas, tables, and lighting that made this wedding a beautiful Victorian wedding. Wow, the gardens are a wonderful place to walk and talk with a friend. We meandered the short paths, stopped to chat in this small awesome outdoor amphitheater, and took photos with a funky statue and a funky tree in the beautiful succulent section. We walked around the porch of the house, but didn't go in this time. I'm looking forward to returning, now that I am reminded what a great place this is, for a picnic, or some outdoor reading when the weather gets nicer, or another beautiful and central place to meet a friend. read more

Renting Falkirk for our wedding was probably one of the best decisions we made as a couple! We married here in early September. The weather was amazing (80+ degrees) and we got married under the ancient oak tree with about 45+ guests in attendance. Then we had cocktail and bocce ball in the wedding lawn. And a lovely lunch on the veranda. We played some wedding games and were going to dance in the living room of the house, but we ran out of time... Lol. This venue is a godsend. It has a very old-world vibe with the Victorian house & details, but also a really nice ambiance as the place has lots of great plants and flowers from all over the world. It really is a charming place. And very afforable as it's owned by the City of San Rafael. Everyone on my guest list asked us how we found this place and whether we attended an event here. Nope, we found it through the internet and just random good luck. We visited last year when we were wedding venue hunting, and immediately knew this was the place we wanted to get married at when we stepped inside. It's private, has parking spaces, afforable, and intimate. It also helped that Mike of Falkirk Cultural Center was amazing to work with. He was helpful, kind, and full of knowledge. Tip: If your wedding is less than 75+ guests, this is a great venue. If more, you may want to consider another venue. read more

Beautiful wedding venue - we got married here in July 2018, and it was magical. When you rent for an event, the whole grounds are yours to enjoy, which means there are several different locations to make the most of during the day. It truly feels like your estate for the day. The most reoccurring question from our wedding was "how did you find this venue??". Someone told us it felt like a Great Gatsby party :) From lots of research on Bay Area wedding venues, this one is a hidden gem, in terms of price & value. Some of the mansion is a little run down due to the limited operating budget. As a result, you have to be comfortable with some cracks, dust, etc. We actually had some family help us dust and clean a bit the day of the wedding. One great perk is knowing that your money from renting goes to maintaining this historic building. The staff is really nice and flexible, though are somewhat overworked so it takes some follow-up to get answers, and some willingness to "wait and see". You can also come walk through the venue on weekends during opening hours, which helped us work through some of the planning questions we had! Great flexibility in vendors - there are no limitations on what kind of food or vendors you can bring in, so we were able to make a dream combination of traditional home-cooked food with professional serving staff. Check out Whim for event staff, they know Falkirk well. We did our pre-ceremony drinks on the steps in front of the house, ceremony in the rose garden, champagne reception on the "wedding lawn", and dinner on the verandah. HIGHLY recommend getting as many umbrellas as you can, both the rose garden and the wedding lawn get full sun. The Falkirk was the perfect place for our wedding. Michael spent a considerable amount of time answering our never ending questions. It was great to know we could always rely on him to give us suggestions. Since the Falkirk is already a stunning Victorian mansion, you don't really need to worry about getting together lots of wedding decorations- the architecture handles this for you. Also, since it's owned by the city of San Rafael, it's about half the rate of other venues you'll find on the market. It was also nice to know that the rental fees go towards preserving this special place. During the ceremony, Michael and Nao did a fantastic job being available in case we needed them. Thank goodness for this place! I was just about to give up on finding a wedding venue I liked that we could afford when we decided to check out Falkirk. We knew almost immediately that it was for us. We got engaged in London so all the British charm the building had to offer felt right. We had a really small (20 person) wedding and Falkirk was absolutely perfect. It gave us the classy, cozy, vintage space we were looking for without breaking the bank. I got to have the garden wedding I always wanted and the veranda behind the building was a great spot to hold our reception. Our photographer was thrilled with the look of the outdoor spaces and the beautiful details inside the house. The venue itself has a lot to offer but the management and the price made it a no-brainer. The property is owned by the city and managed by Beth and Mike. Both of them were helpful and responsive and made the wedding planning much easier. I liked how transparent their policies were and that they didn't have the stupid fees that a lot of the other venues had. We were married on a Sunday and were able to rent the venue for 12 hours for about $1800. They had plenty of tables as well so we didn't have to rent any. If you are planning a smallish wedding (less than 100 people), absolutely check this place out, I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

We booked the Falkirk Cultural Center for our July 1st wedding. We were elated when we found the space. Falkirk offered so much space for the price. We were able to do both a beautiful outdoor ceremony in the back garden and a full seated reception on the veranda with plenty of space on the front lawn for a cocktail hour and lawn games. The whole event came off beautifully! Our only complaint was with one of our day-of managers, Valerie. Granted, she's young and might be new to her role, but the morning of the wedding she came at me in a way which I didn't appreciate. I guess she thought we were unloading items onto the empty driveway too early and came to chastise me and ask me rudely to put things back into my car. It really did put a damper on the experience, and is the reason I can't give 5 starts. Amazing and beautiful wedding venue at a very affordable price! We had our wedding here on a Sunday last July, which cost half the Friday/Saturday rate. This place offers so many different and beautiful areas to use. We had the ceremony in the rose garden, dinner on the wedding lawn, cocktails on the deck (nice and shady after the sunny ceremony garden in July!), and dancing inside the house. The house itself is so elegant and beautiful, it needs almost no decoration. We especially loved our "first look" on the staircase with the stained glass window! My husband and I got married at Falkirk on June 15, 2013. We could not be happier with Falkirk as a venue. All of our guests loved the house and the grounds. We loved that we could get married in the "wedding garden" out behind the house, have dinner on the big deck, and have dancing and merriment in the ballroom/parlor. We also hired a pianist to play the piano that is in the house during our cocktail hour. The house itself is beautiful and does not need much decorating (we just had some candles and flowers for a little ambiance). Our wedding of 80 people fit perfectly. I had my wedding here. The space is lovely, the hourly rate on Sundays is a steal, and everything is really well-managed. They have a "preferred list" on their website, but you can use anyone you want and they don't charge a fee. They let me drop off supplies the day before, and pick them back up the day after. They don't charge extra for holidays. Basically, the Falkirk Mansion is pretty much the perfect wedding venue for a wedding of 90 people or less. read more

Shopping for wedding venues can be really overwhelming, especially when you find out how much they cost. Falkirk was on our list to look at and once we visited, it was clear this was the place. The rental was very reasonably priced, without sacrificing beauty, location, or service. We had about 100 guests and Falkirk was a comfortable fit. Michael, one of the site coordinators, has seen so many weddings that in addition to informing us about the facility, he was able to share lots of ideas based on what he has seen. The key was to streamline set up and break-down because our rental ended at midnight (there has to be a glass slipper joke in there somewhere). Risa, the main site coordinator, was very helpful when we had questions about use, and was flexible when we realized we needed to book more time for the big day. We had our ceremony in the garden, drinks and appetizers on the verandah, dinner on the lawn, and reception in the ballroom. The cakes were in the beautiful dining room. Our caterers had the kitchen to use and the rental came with 7 big tables and 80 wooden folding chairs. We also had a roomy and bright bridal suite upstairs, with a smaller room for the groom and groomsmen. The gardens didn't need much decoration at all, because they are already beautiful, especially in the summer when everything is in bloom. The house is beautiful, interior and exterior, and provided the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed yet special event. All of our guests enjoyed themselves. This place is a kick! My daughter started taking a Saturday morning art class downstairs at the Mansion which she is really enjoying. However...her favorite part of the class is after class when she marches up to the front door and enters to see Mary Jane(?)who is the curator/guide at the Mansion. Well the mansion is a wealth of awesome minor manor creepiness, history, stories and even a cute art gallery upstairs. Who knew we had a treasure like this in our San Rafael midst. A great place in central San Rafael for your private event. Everyone who lives in San Rafael has seen this place, but not everyone has had a chance to hold an event here. I've enjoyed many weddings here now and I'm certain I will enjoy many more. The decor is like Disneyland's Haunted House, but no where near as goofy or spooky. There is a grand home for indoor events and a great patio and lawn for outdoor. I would say the only real limitation to this place is the size of event you can hold and the hours you can run too. Its located in downtown San Rafael near homes, so there is a sound cut off around 10:30. So check it out for your event! read more

My wife and I got married at Falkirk on July 11th 2015. It was the perfect venue for us and our 80 guests. The staff was easy to work with, the cost was very low, and the space was wonderful. We got married on the wedding lawn, which is a cute, intimate, semi-enclosed lawn with lots of plants surrounding it. The front steps were perfect for family portraits and the verandah (deck) was great for dinner and dancing. We did half cocktail tables and half dinner tables, which allowed us to clear a dance floor. The layout worked great and the house and grounds' inherit beauty meant we didn't need much decor or upstaging. The house size was perfect for our 80 guests because it provided healthy partitions and kept it intimate. We put out tables, food, drinks, and got married. The staff was helpful and reasonable. Since it is owned by the city of San Rafael, they are not looking for a profit, just making a reasonable effort to preserve the house. Their advice from past weddings was helpful and they provided some guidance on the day-of. The only downside we found was that the venue does not provide cleanup, which a lot of other venues do. This is reflected in the price and we knew when we booked it. Ultimately it worked out fine, but pushed us towards full-service catering instead of food trucks. Catering staff cleaned up the food before the event ended and we were out ~45 minutes after the last song. It was a source of concern while planning, but ended up being trivial. I can not say enough AMAZING things about this place. After scouting all the wedding venues within a 20 mile radius of San Francisco for affordable options, I was at my wits end. I almost threw it all to the wind to have a picnic in a campground, I came across my saving grace - Falkirk Cultural Center. A 1880's victorian mansion on 11.1 acres of gorgeous property, government-owned in downtown San Rafael. It is probably the last affordable wedding venue in Marin at $200/hr Fri/Sat, $100/hr. all other days. Michael and Risa were very helpful, responsive, and informative. Michael was there all day and incredibly helpful to us - above and beyond - Falkirk is BLESSED to have him. Here are our amazing vendors (a real leg up to use someone who knows your venue): Lorraine Manawil - www.beginningbliss.com. There are not enough words to say how incredible Lorraine was to making our day PERFECT. A DIY bride herself, she really understood and respected our vision. Sonny - www.silveradoDJ.com. WOW. He loves his job, gets the party going, handled microphone on the lawn, AND set up a video/photobooth on the porch. What a hit!! BiRite Flowers in San Francisco - Wiley at Divis location is an ANGEL! Way more affordable than a florist Party Center in San Rafael - so professional and solid on the details. The mansion is old and it has great history. It is located in downtown san rafael and close to san francisco and it has its own parking. Perfect spot for a small (60-70 guests) wedding. After looking at various venues all around the bay area (including Temescal, Brazilian Room, etc.) we found this gem by chance. We got married here one August morning a few years ago, on the lush green lawn in the back (no shade, we provided bunch of small to medium sized colorful Japanese paper umbrellas for guest to use as sun shade and to keep as souvenirs). We served lunch on the veranda which was in the shade provided by the building. Lots of interior sitting space for guests as well. Plenty of photo ops both inside and outside. Beautiful grounds, plenty of guest parking, beautiful Victorian building with charming old world architecture and stained glass windows. Reasonable rental cost, nice kitchen for caterers. Just be warned that there's no A/C and August in San Rafael can be a scorcher. Might want to consider an outdoor tent for the lawn area if it's hot and sunny. Nevertheless, inside the building stays reasonably cool. Just a real nice place, worth considering for any joyous occasion. read more

Staff was exceptional, and the fella who was overseeing the house during our use of it was awesome, and accommodating. I found the Fakirk accidentally when we attended the San Rafael food and wine festival. Looking at the incredible grounds and the beyond beautiful house we assumed it wouldn't be affordable for our wedding but asked anyway. We were blown away by the incredible rate and the friendliness of the staff (Beth and Mike). The location was perfect for our DIY wedding but would also be perfect for someone with a crazy blowout budget. One of the best things about the venue is that it needs minimal decorations, since all the details are so exquisite. We skipped the formal dinner *(tons of small apps and little tables for folks who wanted to sit) and used the outdoor deck as our dance floor. People - if you are on a budget, and even if you aren't - Falkirk is worth every penny and more. read more

We held our wedding here in July 2008, and it was a great location. This venue doesn't really work if you have more than 75 guests or so, but for our small wedding, it was perfect. The grounds and the veranda allowed us to have the ceremony and dinner outside, and then move inside for dancing in the evening. The staff were easy to work with, and the prices were pretty reasonable for Marin. There's plenty of parking and the location is central. I loved the Victorian charm of the building, but an older house also means getting ready in the top floor of a house with no A/C on a hot summer day. Another thing is that because it's a city-owned property, there is a good amount of foot traffic passing by, and no one to stop people from walking up to the place. In fact, we had some guests for the wedding next door at the Elks lodge stroll right in thinking they were at the right place, until they saw the bride (me) and realized they were at the wrong event. read more

Falkirk Cultural Center is a romantic Queen Anne era mansion with lovely grounds, old oaks and magnolias, a pond within the rolling lawn and a recently developed exotic Mediterranean garden. It's a wonderful venue for a smaller wedding, party or other event. The house interior is charming and inviting, authentically Victorian with interesting historic memorabilia throughout and art galleries upstairs showing interesting, well-curated exhibits. We went by early March to check out Falkirk as a possible wedding venue for ceremony and reception. The building itself is beautiful on the outside. We didn't get to go inside since it was being used at the time we went by. We walked around the outside. Compare to the photos on their website, th wedding garden was smaller than I expected. The wedding garden didn't look well kept. It was early March, so maybe it was still early in the season for luscious green lawn? There was a white building in the backdrop. It needed a paint job. The wedding garden is located towards back of the building, so it was private from the roadway. There is a really nice lawn area in front of the building, but I don't think they use it for ceremonies. Also the front lawn area faces a fairly busy road, not very private at all. The veranda was a nice open space. Since we are having about 120 people, the guests would have to be split up between indoors and outdoors. We didn't want that, so we said nah to the place as our wedding venue. read more

We had our wedding of about 70 people at the Falkirk Cultural Center this past July. We chose to have our wedding on the wedding lawn, and had cocktails and dinner on the back porch. The wedding lawn was pretty hot and in full sun at 5 pm when we had our wedding, and if we had known that we might have chosen a different spot on their lawn or a different time. Mike and all of the staff were really accommodating, though, and it was easy to schedule a time in the morning the day before for a rehearsal. Everyone loved the house and the lawns and the house provide a lot of great picture opportunities. We had our wedding on a Sunday, which saved us money on the hourly rate. And we had it on a long weekend so that guests from out of town had lots of time to travel. We also really liked that they don't have a list of required vendors or anything, so you can bring in whoever you want. We rented some speakers and played music for the wedding and reception off of my computer. We would definitely recommend it as an affordable venue option for up to about 100 guests. read more

This is lovely old historical mansion in the heart of downtown San Rafael. It is a great place for events and seminars. They are easy to work with and by booking your event there you are helping generate much needed funds to help keep this wonderful place open! read more
