I had driven by Routes Gallery many times and always wondered what it was; today I was waiting for someone shopping next door at United so I decided to check it out. Routes has such a spacious and peaceful outdoor area with an assortment of plants and Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. Step inside and be immersed in more art and culture. There were Tibetan prayer flags, sage, bamboo, crystals, beads, and more. The singing bowls caught my attention. The owner of Routes was at the gallery; he was so friendly and I appreciated that he took time to talk to me and share his knowledge of the different bowls (they had metal and crystal). While I didn't buy anything on this visit to Routes, I enjoyed browsing the gallery and taking in the energy. I'll definitely be back! read more

This gallery/store is absolutely fabulous and you don't need to be Buddhist to shop there. The plants he is selling are thriving most likely due to the infusion of more than, my guess, 400 Buddhas, gems, And other breathtaking work from Thailand, India And other far east locations. The artwork, the coloring, the facial expressions are all so utterly amazing and Richard the owner is completely fabulous and has a story to tell for every single piece. Just a walk through the gallery is like a mini meditation and his prices are reasonable and the pieces can be placed inside or outside the home and they come in every single size. Routes Gallery has a great selection of statuary and lots of small gift to pick up quickly. I frequent the place because occasionally Richard runs great deals that are impossible to pass up. This review is for Lorraine (and Sita)! We stopped by here to look for a Guan Yin statue after having searched for months. We have a small space, so we wanted something that was just the right size and fit for our altar at home. Lorraine was so sweet and patient with us. She helped us tremendously with finding the right statue! Sita the Cat was also a sweetheart - we're convinced she sat next to our Guan Yin for a reason. ;) We can't wait to drop back in again! read more

Kind of an odd location but it's probably the reason why Routes Gallery has survived, while competitors have disappeared over the last couple of years. One just doesn't expect to see large stone Indonesian heads (which I lust after) in front of a shop off just off Center Boulevard. Richard has done a good job making a formerly neglected corner a mini-park with his statue garden and vegetation. It's always a treat to pop in and see what he's picked up on his excursions to Indonesia, Thailand and China. He has a good eye. It's tight quarters so give yourself some time to browse as there is a lot to see and absorb. Park kitty-corner to his shop in the lot next to Landsdale Park. read more

Routes is a wonderful place to visit and enjoy seeing a fantastic selection of Buddha and other Asian spiritual artifacts. Richard, the proprietor is a delight to converse and interact with. He is peaceful and ready to enjoy discussion over a cup of tea, of both his great items as well as his experiences in his travels. The shop is wonderfully filled with art from many parts of Asia and it includes a pleasing and peaceful garden space in back where even more items are available for one to browse and purchase. My partner and I have visited at least four times and purchased items. It is the best selection of Buddha statuary and other icons for home, or garden or even spiritual place I have seen. This is such a beautiful collection of Asian art, statuary and pottery, all elegantly displayed -- in a gallery setting and outside in a peaceful garden behind on the creek. There are Buddhas in many forms, made out of different materials and from a number of countries. Some very precious things and others more affordable. Really worth a visit just for the visual delight of it all. Also got a lot of great ideas from how cleverly everything is displayed. The owner, Richard, knows a lot about the pieces and I am pretty sure he brought them back himself. This is obviously a labor of love. read more

A friend sent me to Routes Gallery because I had mentioned wanting a piece of sculpture for my garden, and he was spot on in recommending this fantastic shop. Richard, the owner, is very knowledgable and helps you understand the origins of each piece while not making you feel like you are under pressure to buy anything. The garden out back is spectacular and really helps you understand what one of his pieces will look like in your yard. It may take you a few trips, but I defy you to visit this place and not want to take something home. You will be glad you did. I had been recently visiting with friends in Marin and we briefly stopped in this unique store in San Anselmo. The gentleman was polite and answered our questions well but some of the items were a bit pricey compared to similar items available in the South Bay. I sure hope some of the profits are being donated to good causes from where these Buddhas and other products originate from. It's not enough to just have a successful business but thoughtfulness towards benefiting Asian cultures. read more

I grew up with Buddha's in my home, and was so happy to find this shop when I bought my own home in San Rafael. I bought 2 large stone Buddha's and the owner, Richard, let me take as much time as I liked selecting them. Richard is a great guy, and was VERY kind to help me transport them to my garden. After driving by here about a hundred times, I finally stopped into Routes Gallery today. And I'm so glad I did! I truly enjoyed speaking with Richard, the owner. He was genuinely kind, interesting, and helpful. And I came away with an amazing specially-tuned wind chime, a beautiful umbrella, some yummy tea leaves (Richard gave me a cup of this tea, and refilled it many times), and, of course, prayer flags. I brought my nephew he's 11 and he was as enchanted by the splendid place as I. The store is exceptional. Tiny to giant status of Buddha from different parts of Asia. Some hand done statues and hand carved wood wall pieces as well. Garden statuary in differing tones, praying monks, fountains, frogs and the potted plants are for sale.
