Now, I don't have anything against all of the breweries in Falls Church, but I sure do miss DC and it's plentiful cocktail bars. We've seen this place many times but it always looked closed to us. We finally checked the website and not only were they open but they were going to have live music as well (Friday). We popped in to get a quick taste and were immediately greeted by Susan, who recommended the Old Fashioned made with their bourbon. Can't say no to that. While I sipped on my first fancy drink in Falls Church, the boyfriend sampled their thyme lemonade with vodka and their cherry mule. Both were incredibly refreshing, although I'll stick to my bourbon. The food situation: You call and order from Pizza Orso and they deliver it to your table and the price just gets added on to your tab. We ordered the fried burrata and the brussel chips. The cheese was good but I'd pass on the brussel chips. They were too greasy and not crispy. We came in over the weekend and it was not very busy. That said, there was only one server there and they were not very fast. The liquor is OK. I really liked the vodka, but everything else was a bit underwhelming. Anything flavored was far too sweet for me. The one thing I absolutely loved was the "pagan shot." Sold for $6.66, the shot changes colors (to blood red natch!) when you drink it, so it's a pretty unique and fun thing to drink. Other than that though, I wasn't too impressed. read more

I got a Groupon here for their beer sampling flight and I was confused since distillers usually don't mean beer, but I didn't realize they partnered with tuck'd away brewing company. Sadly, we went there very late so all the nearby food establishments were closed (they don't have their own kitchen, but the local restaurants like elevation burger and pizzeria orso) will deliver food to the distiller! I came here with my mom to do the paint night (day) that is held by Yaymaker. Bought the tickets through Groupon and then confirmed them online. The paint session is held in the front area which is not a huge space but it was set up nicely. The room displays paintings from other artist and gives off a nice rustic vibe. I only had a glass of wine from the bar but there is a whole drink and food menu to choose from which is reasonably priced. Our waitress and paint instructor were wonderful and I would come again. read more

We visited Falls Church Distillers last Saturday afternoon for a spirits tasting. I stumbled across them as a result of finding them on Yelp! We came in early on a hot afternoon - and sat at the bar. I ordered a tasting flight of two vodkas and two gins. I met Michael, the owner/proprietor. Really nice, personable guy! I enjoyed three of the four spirits I tasted. The second Gin was a little much for me. Very heavy on the licorice/anise flavor - gave me instant heartburn! The vodkas were very good! Falls Church Distillers is more than a distillery. You can order cocktails, wine, beer, and it is also a full service restaurant. They have a full menu of food. Will have to try out some menu food items during our next visit! Spirits are great,skip the food. Because it is bad, based on a panini and salad experience, but I think that is something you can't go wrong with, even being hungry since 6 hours, I was unable to call it okay. Brussetta was okay. Grab the burger at elevation or pizzeria orso adjacent to before or after it and just enjoy their amazing vodka, gin, whisky, Apple brandy to name a few. The cocktails are also excellent. Hot tini a summer drink is highly recommended if you like the zing. They have various events like open mic, paint night etc. Definitely a great place to hang out and have a few good conversations. My visit to Falls Church Distillers was fine. Nothing mind-blowing, but pretty good. I visited with my wife on a Sunday afternoon looking for a local craft distillery. The service was ok and the drinks were tasty. There was a group of people there painting pictures, so we felt a little out of place, but it turned out alright. I tried a flight of the "darks" - whiskey and rum. I thought the price was a little high, but the portions turned out to be ok. The bartender took some time to explain each one. All in all, each was pretty good. If you're in the area, I'd definitely give it a try. read more

My boyfriend was running the Marine Corps Marathon Sunday and I had just flown in from being out of the country for a week. Both exhausted & at the hotel we get in yelp to find dinner. The reviews for Falls Church Distillers weren't bad. The menu looked decent. So we ordered. Let me just point out again this was the meal my boyfriend was going to eat before running 26 miles. THIS is what we got. When I opened what was supposed to be my charcuterie board, the first box to be opened, I honestly thought it was a joke. I told my boyfriend, "this can't be right, where is the rest of it and are those dollhouse crackers thrown on top?!" We opened the rest of the boxes of food and quickly saw this was not a joke THIS was what the put in the boxes, accepted hard earned money from us for, & delivered to us. On what planet is this even an attempt at ITALIAN?! We had every intention to go in after the marathon and demand a refund. I in all my anger wanted to find out what idiot reviewed the order and gave the ok to deliver this as well as the pathetic excuse for a cook that has the audacity to send this out of the kitchen! Fortunately for them after the marathon we were exhausted and decided let them have the money we wasted on the garbage they gave us. Was underwhelmed by my experience here. As a whiskey lover, I was excited to get a walk through of their offerings. I've gotta say, the whiskey is downright an abomination. It's way too young and doesn't have much flavor at all. Very one dimensional and lacked any real taste. It was a little like drinking a severely watered down cocktail. Not my cup of tea-but, to each their own. I really wanted to like this place, but I couldn't see myself returning again. I love coming here because of the unique products (have you heard of pepper flavored vodka?) and stellar service. I've been here twice for tastings and bought a bottle of bourbon for my fiancee each time. The distillery is a one-stop shop with its wide selection of 5 liquors: pepper flavored vodka, lemon flavored gin, bourbon, regular gin, regular vodka. Can't wait for the wheat and corn Jameson style whiskey, rum, and apple brandy to come out later this year! I'm impressed how Mike is able to use the same tank to distill the different types of liquor. He gave us a tour back in Dec and showed us how the whole process works! When I came back the 2nd time in Feb, the distillery got its full liquor license and became a full-service bar with extensive food menu (no fence dividing the bar from the ABC store). Now full size cocktail replace the mini flights (hope the spiked hot chocolate with vodka returns to the menu!) The distillery was previously limited to only serving 3 ounces/day per customer. Now there's no limit! Although there are only a 1/2 dozen cocktails to choose from on the new menu, the VA mule is my favorite - the bourbon and ginger beer are great! I like how the Jimmy Thyme cocktail is sweet from the brown sugar and lemonade, but balanced out with bourbon. Nick, the bartender, also hooked me up with a custom cocktail outside the menu, Pomegranate Mint cocktail, which I thoroughly enjoyed. He also gave us a complimentary shooter of eggnog with aged vodka topped with kahlua. It was heavenly and would request it as a cocktail next time. Thanks for the hook up Nick! Every time I come here, I'm greeted by a warm smile from Mike, who loves sharing his knowledge and passion of distilleries with my fiancee and I. We appreciated all of his recommendations to other distilleries and visited KO, MurLarkey, VA Distillery, and Silverback. I had fun at all of them and they each have a unique vibe and cocktail flights. I would also add Catoctin and Copper Fox to the list. I would come back for some live music. Fun, hip place that delivers a distillery/restaurant/bar/art combo. It sounds like a lot, but they make it work. I went for the bourbon, and was happy with my samples. Per VA ABC law, they can only serve a total of 3 ounces of booze. Those 3 ounces can be divvied up as 1 ounce pours, 0.5 ounce pours, or a pour within a cocktail. But after that - no more! VA is very specific in how much you are allowed to drink. After my samples I had a quick lunch while watching TV and admiring the artwork for sale. Loved my chicken hoagie (technically it was a panino al pollo) and chili! What I tried: Great Falls Gin: I typically don't like gin because its both tasteless & too botanical to me. Theirs surprised me with a black liquorish finish. Apparently they use 50% anise, which was unusual to me (but I liked it). Virginia Mule bourbon w/ginger: Soda-like combo that was pretty good, although it was too cold outside for me to enjoy it properly. Hot Chocolate with bourbon I think? LOVED this. If I could leave zero stars, I would. We went to this distillery for the first time because a family member was playing music there. The place was not air conditioned (on a 90+° day) and the drinks were TERRIBLE. Between the 9 of us we sampled the gin, the bourbon, and several drinks I've never heard of. EVERYTHING was awful, and nothing tasted like we expected. Our tab - just for 3 of us - was $80 and it was the worst $80 we've ever spent in a bar. We will NEVER go back. I have visited dozens of small distilleries across the country and recently have been sampling Virginia distilleries. Some of my favorites were Catoctin Creek, Cape Charles, A. Smith Bowman and Tarnished Truth. Falls Church Distillery was on also my list of distilleries to try. Unfortunately they do not have a tasting room, but I was able to get my hands on a bottle of their Church Bourbon Whiskey. I cannot give this bourbon high marks. It starts with considerable sweetness on the palate that quickly fades to an acidic aftertaste. It could use more of the flavor and smoothness bourbon drinkers look for. The Fall Church website notes that they use lightly charred barrels. Perhaps they need to rethink that and also allow the bourbon to age longer. This bourbon may be satisfactory in a cocktail but falls short on it's own. read more

I recently came here for a fundraising event. The atmosphere was quaint. The food was delicious and the spirits were great! Nick, my bartender whipped up some awesome drinks. Of the few I had, the Bloody Pepper was by far my fave. If you're a fan of Bloody Mary's you won't want to miss out on this. It's made with their delicious Pepper Vodka. If you're a fan of flight, indulge in their FCD Flight. Mr. Paluzzi does an awesome job of explaining his distilled offerings. This place is small, quaint, and very welcoming. It's also kid friendly! From the moment we walked in, the server was extremely attentive. She explained the menu and even offered us a high chair when she saw our baby. She explained everything and gave her suggestions. If you want to know what Virginia ABC laws are, you need only to wonder in to this place. I love small craft beer joints and distillers alike. FCD has some solid food on their short menu. I just had a couple small antipastas, but heard good things on the other foods. Upon entering, you will receive some of the rules put on distilleries by ABC. Thinking of what the owner must have gone through to abide by all of this really makes me feel for them. The distillery is segmented into several areas by cages with clear, yet ridiculous, ABC rules on where, when, and how much you can imbibe. It's a family joint where everyone seems to do a bit of everything. Seems discombobulated at times, but it is all in service of their guests. After I finished a life-long goal of running the New York marathon*, my then-girlfriend, now-wife, took me on a surprise trip to Kentucky to tour the bourbon distilleries there. It was an amazing trip, not only slightly turning me into the guy who spits out the four legal requirements for being bourbon**, it also turned me on to my "I pretty much only like bourbon drinks" view on straight and mixed drinks.*** And since I became such a bourbon fan, I'm always on the lookout for new options, new flavors, or new things that will be as tasty as the Buffalo Trace family of bourbons (ah, Eagle Rare, how I love thee). FC Distillers opened a week ago, and with any new entrant into the bourbon world, especially here in Falls Church, I just had to check it out. With all of the stupid, asinine rules around selling alcohol in Virginia, and not having any bourbon of their own to sell (as it will take three years, at least, for them to create the mash and age the bourbon), what they've created in Tinner Hill is a mix between a distillery tour spot, a restaurant and a private party establishment. As they mentioned today, the restaurant, which serves Italian finger food, has to keep them alive for the next three years. But what it does is put a slightly unsightly metal fence in the middle of a relatively small space with three tasting tables on the side you enter on, with more tables and a bar on the other side of the fence. There's also an upstairs on the tasting side, but on really warm days it might be a little toasty up there. The bourbon they're selling now is fine; a mix of other Virginia-sourced bourbons that I didn't love on its own (it's aged three years, and is a little harsh to the initial taste) but did like as part of the tasting cocktails they created. You see, they can't just sell you a shot, or give you a taste of the liquor, as we discussed in the previous part about Virginia's backwards liquor laws. So they've created some really tasty cocktails you can try for a small fee without having to buy food in order to try out their bourbon and gin and vodka spirits. The 'New Fashioned' was pretty good, but the gin cocktail (which name I forget right now) was the star of the show. Definitely get that if you go. All in all, a fantastic new spot that I hope is part of the community for many years to come, and I'm excited to see their first expression in a few years. * - 6 years and 30 pounds ago. ** - at least 50% corn mash, aged at least two years, made in a charred oak barrel and no more than 160 proof. *** - I also have a two kids under three, so for the most part those drinks are on the couch in the hour between bedtime for the kids and bedtime for me. read more

I really like this place. Not the most exciting location, but it's close by (I can walk here, drink, walk home, always a plus). I like their distilled spirits, mostly the bourbon. Not so much a vodka fan, but I do like an occasional martini. They make good drinks. Like the bar/food area. Great food. Must admit, I've only had the bourbon meatballs, but they are really, really good. Like to wander over there in the early afternoon, have a pint of beer, watch sports on TV if there's a decent game on, etc. Only wish is to have more beers on tap. They've got four taps, and they're not always all flowing. I'm not so much a dark beer kind of guy - I did try their collaboration with Mad Fox, aged in the bourbon barrels, and it is quite excellent. The people working here are very nice, conversational, and thoughtful. I once took a call from my boss in the late afternoon (hey, it was after work/short day); the bartender muted the TV for me. I like this little spot in FC. We usually go to see some of our favorite local musical acts. It's in a good location and has great spirits, beer, and food! We've tried just about a bit of everything and always enjoy ourselves here. The service is always perfect, too! I highly recommend this anyone in the area who likes great, handcrafted cocktails and dishes. A suggestion I have as a patron who goes for the music often, I'd suggest moving tables/making more space in front of the "stage" area where acts set up so people can stand/dance. The lovely and talented Meghan greeted us at the door like long lost friends. Her warmth and attention made this feel like a custom/personalized experience. Meghan explained that they make all of their spirits on-site. It's a family owned business and the family feeling shows in the best ways. For example, they partner with their neighbor, Orso Pizzeria for great food delivered to your table. The anchovy with Orso's Caesar salad formed the perfect bite! But, back to the distillery. I enjoyed a flight of 3 generously sized mini-cocktails for $20. They were all delicious but my favorite was the Lavender Bee with lemon verbena gin, honey, lemon juice, and lavender, topped with a floating slice of lime and a rosebud... perfect for girls' night or a bridal shower's theme cocktail. Certainly, there is space for a shower and it looks like a band could set up facing the bar. I almost hate to post this review because I want to come back without a long wait for a table. BTW, indoor and outdoor seating is available, all well distanced. I saw the servers wearing masks and sanitizing. Over a doorway it says Nonna governa questa cucina. Came here, months ago, for what shall go down in history as "Amanda's 40th Birthday Party." It was hip, the DJs were amazing, and the drinks were flowing. Didn't try much of the food, but the night was incredible. This distillery is a great addition to the Little City. Came back yesterday, and chatted with the owner. They now have various other fun events like Karaoke Nights (Wednesdays), Open Mic nights (Sundays) and occasional dance parties. Great place to grab a uniquely-crafted cocktail with friends. I've been coming here for a few years. The owner and the servers are great, friendly. I'm amazed that they can distill and make such a quality product. The bourbon is my favorite. Its terrific. I appreciate that they made hand sanitizer when the community needed it. The think I like a lot is the bands that come through. I've seen bands including a finalist for American Idol. Just amazing players. There are a few things that make Falls Church worthwhile... and for me it's just a few, and this is one of them. This, Ireland 4P and State Theatre. This was a first time visit here. It was actually a nice place. The atmosphere had a cool vibe. It was a small party in attendance. There was a solo guitarist playing some cool chill music. She was really good. The food and drinks were great. I can see where this places might have a little issue with parking if it got really crowded and busy. I'm not sure if there is any additional parking anywhere else. The manager was a great guy. He was very friendly to talk to. He spent a great length of time talking to my girlfriend. I believe they were from the same place. Nice guy. I would definitely go back there again and this time touring the facility. We had come just a little bit too late and it had closed for touring. What I loved - the owner and great staff during the time we were there. They were all friendly and engaging. I can see this being a place to hang out and feel like home based solely on their friendly nature. I really enjoyed the live music (Patty Reese) and would highly recommend coming in when she is featured. What I liked - the beer selection exceeded my expectations. The food was delicious and the portions were probably what was served in the 50s - when you ate actual portion sizes. The manicotti is delicious and I would highly recommend the Bombe de Bourbon! I have to say - I really appreciate a small menu with food that has great taste. What I didn't care for - the cocktails were mostly unimpressive, small, and too expensive. While a unique way to change up how you think about ordering drinks, I would prefer you just charge me a flat price for the drink and get on with it. Don't make me sit there and figure out the combination required to get 3 whole ounces of spirits and the cost associated with the different combos. I'm not sure if this is a strategy used to guarantee people pay $25 each or what. The vodka and gin were ok and the bourbon was still hot and needs additional aging. Lastly, the chairs are horribly uncomfortable and the barstools unreliable and dangerous. We watched a man tip his over when he leaned back and it took a couple of his buddies to keep him upright. Some friends and I had a home tasting that included a few other similarly priced (actually a little cheaper) bourbons. We unanimously disliked the Falls Church, which we rated far below the others. I will not buy again. I will try to stop in for a meal because I like to support local businesses. I hope the food will be better than the spirits. read more

They emailed me when it was ready, I paid through the invoice and went over during the time given. Very quick, very efficient. All around, excellent process. I found this family owned and run place by chance two weeks after it opened, and took the opportunity to enjoy their sampler of bourbon and vodka drinks, including a modified "Old Fashioned" and a vodka lemonade drink. As they will only use their own distilled alcohol, that rules out mixers like vermouth, so they have to be creative, and they succeed. For the time being they have to use a bourbon from southern Virginia until their own blend can age, and it will be fun to see how their bourbon tastes in a few years time. Their vodka is good though, and gin is on the way. Per ABC rules, you are limited to drinking three ounces on site, but if you are hanging out with friends you can supplement with wine and beer. Michael, the owner, was proud to tell the story of the business, and some upcoming varieties of liquor they will have in the coming season. All in all, it is a great way to spend a Weekend afternoon, almost like going to a distillery or winery in the countryside to sample drinks and snack on finger food without leaving Falls Church. After two visits, accompanied by a pair of experienced foodies, allow me three axioms: A zealous novice brewery owner should not assume he is also a capable culinary manager or restauranteur. Despite the enthusiasm and best of intentions, a short-order cook with a microwave cannot produce menu items that compliment the products of the distillery. Whiskey that is not properly aged in old barrels has the taste of a high school chemistry experiment that is due tomorrow. Conclusion: Stick with the fruit/cheese/nuts appetizers and major brand bottled beer. read more

What a pleasant surprise this turned out to be. We showed up on a Sunday afternoon and there was a paint event going on. The owner was working the bar and asked us to sit there. We began sampling and really enjoyed his suggestions and commentary of his craft. Felt like we were regulars and he was amazing. I was visiting friends from out of town in PA and I already want to go back for more. The service and conversation was top notch, even as others wandered in we chatted and had a good time. This is a must try for rye and bourbon lovers. He and his son have some unique flavors and creations and I'm excited to see if they are on the shelf in my local PA state store. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. This is my 2nd time here in like a couple days, which means they deserve this review. Just recently discovered this place but the cocktails (and cocktail flights! Seriously, who else does cocktail FLIGHTS!?) are phenomenal. Don't listen to the douchey negative comments. Their vodka, whiskey, and gin are all delicious. And I usually hate gin. Regardless, Sarah, the bartender/server is super helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive. Especially in these 'uNpReCeDeNtEd TiMeS' it's truly fantastic to see that level of customer service shine through. Too many businesses make the entire experience all about the covid, but Falls Church Distillers do a fantastic job of staying safe and following all the guidelines, while still delivering a lovely experience. And if that's not enough, the vibe is phenomenal. It has such a nifty little coffee house vibe with couches and live music and little private upstairs rooms that are open to everyone. The food arrived cold and then wasn't very appetizing. The lasagna was just cheese on noodles. Hardly any meat at all. The broccoli and green beans had little to no flavor. And the portions were tiny for the price. The one positive was my son liked the hot dog. read more
