Don't get me wrong - Famiglia Baldassarre has great pasta, freshest in town even. But the precursory 1.5 hours of chaos just to have a plate of pasta with parmigiano reggiano and butter? Best pasta in the city. Famiglia Baldassarre is only open at limited times throughout the week and serves fresh pasta. We were here on a cold/windy/rainy day to skip the line and even then, lining up before they opened we were about 15th in line and it was a 45 min wait. They have very limited seating, but is worth it to try at least once. We had their Fior di Latter (homemade mozzarella) with their house bread as a starter, then one each of their daily special pastas followed by their tiramisu. Due to limited seating and standing room, we waited in the cafe next door for a seat to open up when the owner will call us to let us know. Food is seated almost right away and everything was well balanced and fresh. I can see why it's so popular in the local neighborhood and worth the wait. Definitely recommend trying at least once and get everything! Would try again, but the wait time is a bit challenging. Finally made it to Famiglia Baldassare. As most people know, they only serve lunch Wed-Fri from 12pm-2pm. It's a small space with only 10 seats inside. So unless you're the first few in line, you'll have to wait. We went on a cold day, arrived 15ish minutes before lunch, waited about 15 minutes after opening to order and another 20ish minutes to sit down. We were 13th in line. Despite that they were really organized and clear with how long things would take. If you don't want to wait, there is take out. The menu changes daily so when we went, there was cacio pepe and a tomato based pasta. Both were so delicious. I also got the tray of tiramisu which has a good amount of coffee. We tried their homemade fresh mozzarella and it did not disappoint. A nice touch is that you get complimentary freshly baked bread with your lunch. Everything we ate was just so fresh and tasty. And considering it was made that morning, it honestly didn't cost that much (less than $20 per pasta dish). I get why it is so popular but I can't imagine what the lines are like in the summer. Regardless, I would 100% recommend the food as long as you're okay with waiting. It's also not the easiest place to get to by transit so things to consider. Dine in, 2 Take out, & 3 retail. Think about what you want to do before you order. You can order and wait outside and they will call you when your order is ready for dine in/take out/retail. For dine in only few seats are there so I ordered, waited at the cafe, got a call and then in few minutes got our food. For vegetarians few options are there nothing for vegan. The Tiramisu and small bottle of wine looks interesting and will recommend it based on how much people were ordering it. Now the ravioli - stuffed with i believe spinach (first time i tried it) was buttery and there was fresh cheese on top. You have an option to add truffle on top. The service is also quite good. Finally had time to stop by, it was rainy but I came 1.5 hours before they opened at 12pm. There wasn't a line til 11:15? each day varies. There's only 12 seats inside, and there is a few outdoor seating, but once there's long line you're better off doing takeout to be honest. there's only 2 pasta to choose from. The spaghetti with lamb was super delicious!! You have to order before you sit and pay. They offer dessert as well, we got to try the bar ape ice cream and house made tiramisu. They are quite pleasant but a touch pretentious - while maybe earned, was a bit of a turn off. We got one tagliatelle and one ravioli. We arrived here at 11:30 on Thursday. There was already a line up of people. In about 10 mins the line was 3 times longer - our expectation got high. We were lucky to be one of the first guests that got a table in the first round. The system is: It opens at 12. 6 people are allowed to be in the space to order. Order & pay first at the cashier before seating That means, I had to make a decision what to eat today, what to buy from retail store - very quick. Lots of information to process from the time I first saw the menu on the blackboard, and scan all the items on the shelf and in the display case to order time. Thus ordering felt rushed, as I know so many people were behind me. I picked up a few pieces of bread on the counter (complimentary) and seated. We (2 of us) shared the table with another couple. We ordered: ＃Paccheri (with butter, fish and reggiano) # Cappellacci (with Tomato sauce) # Fior di latte (home made mozzarella) # Tagliatelle (Frozen, take out 300g) # Cavatelli (Frozen, take out 400g) I liked the Cappellacci which is a stuffed pasta with ricotta and spinach, coated with fresh tomato sauce. The cheese and the sauce was absolutely delicious - but I felt that the pasta itself felt a bit crumbly and pale. Paccheri's texture was the same. I expected a nice balance of bounciness and firmness, but such bounciness was absent. The fish and reggiano sauce was new to me, and I liked the taste of it. Fior di latte was AMAZING, great texture, tasted sooo fresh! Make sure you grab enough bread at the counter before seated. Just that keep eating this feeling rushed and without wine (no alcohol menu inside) was a bit awkward for us! When exited the place, I saw many people eating their take-out pasta at the tables outside - good idea. Why do I eat the same food feeling rushed inside? I mean damn, the food is good, but the wait definitely sucks and it's only open for 2 hours a day. Even if you get there early you're typically waiting 45+ mins. So plan ahead and get there before it opens to line up, or know that you are going to wait for awhile. (It's worth it). There's only one lineup to order food and for the shop just FYI. Don't count on getting a table inside - there's only a handful of spots. Fortunately there are tables outside as long as the weather is nice, or you can take home. As everyone has said... pasta = amazing. Wait = terrible. On a cold winter day, we went to the outlands (not really DT core), lined up, and waited for 2 hours for spaghetti and meatballs (no second option on vday). We were very much prepared for this process as my partner has been before and I've read up on it, but it was still such a demoralizing experience that I wouldn't do this again any time soon. We arrived a bit later at 12:30pm to a seemingly not that long line, but it moves so incredibly slow and we were actually really scared that we wouldn't be served even after waiting the whole time. We ordered a bit past 2pm, was ushered outside, then was called over the speaker and took it to go and we just ate at home which took away some of the magic. The pasta was really really good. Definitely some of the best pasta I've had in my life and really affordable for the quality. All in all, the waiting experience clouded the end result for me, but I would definitely recommend to try here at least once and be there before 11:30am and expect it to be an all-day type of activity. Ive wanted to try this place since my past coworker told me her son owned it. Even though he is not short of customers (quite the opposite) I still wanted to show my support. I just never had the chance to because they only open Wednesday to Fridays 12-2pm for lunch. Thus, I would have to take a day off work to go. Which I did. It was a hour bus ride away from me and the wait time was an hour - which is norm time to wait according to my friend. When we got in it was amazing. The kitchen was fully opened and you can see all the chefs making and cooking pasta. Their menu is rotating and only have a few select items each day. For the pasta, I tried all three that day. Tagiatlle, and their ravioli both in the tomato sauce and the milk sauce. The first bite of the tagiatlle you can tell how fresh the pasta is. The flavour was not too impactful so I was naturally a bigger fan of the ravioli which was stuffed perfectly with prosciutto. However, the more I ate the tagiatlle the better and more freshing it tasted in my mouth. There was three of us and each of us had a different favourite pasta. Mine was the ravioli with the tomato sauce for that day I was feeling tomato sauce over milk sauce. The tiramisu itself was also amazing! The cacao powder was thicker than most other places so I definitely inhaled some and choked on the powder for some bites. The coffee flavour was surprisingly good and noticeable. I am biased for tiramisu and this definitely passed the check. The environment was nice as well. There were both indoor and outdoor seating. Very simple as they dont open for that many hours. Would I go back again? Not any time soon because I dont have that many vacation days and its an hour commute one way for me. Famiglia doesn't take reservations so get there early if you want to eat at one of their five indoor tables or ten (approximately) patio areas (warning, one person will need to sit on a hay bale). The process is simple: wait, order at the counter, sit at the table they point you to (do not try to sneak out of line to secure a spot), help yourself to cutlery and bread, have a seat, and then wait for your name to be called as dishes are ready. With a choice of two pastas (each with a white and red sauce option), three sides, and two desserts, you'll want to go with a buddy to share and try a few things. On our visit, they were offering a tagliatelle ($16) and ricotta & spinach ravioli ($16), which we ordered with ragu and al bianco, respectively. Before the main event arrived, we tucked into a ball of freshly made fior di latte ($9.50) and thinly shaved 16-month crudo di Parma ($7), which were the perfect compliments to their soft crusty bread. The house made mozzarella was simply adorned with a sprinkling of salt, so the cheese's creaminess came out in flavour and texture. Meanwhile, the Parma ham had a delicate salty sweetness to it that was great on its own or on the bread. With two chefs manning three portable induction cooktops, the pastas were churned out at a quick pace. First up, the ravioli where the pasta was so silky since they were literally being made-to-order. In hindsight, we should have gotten these with sugo rosso sauce as the ricotta filling was neutral and needed more seasoning. The butter and cheese sauce, while allowing the spinach flavours to come out, seemed too plain. However, it did make for a tasty bite once I added on a piece of mozzarella and prosciutto. The tagliatelle was divine and was made to marry the ragu. Who doesn't like a forkful of smooth chewy pasta coated with a fresh tomato meat sauce? We loved it so much that a second helping was ordered along with a third to go by my friend. If you order the tiramisu ($5), they'll write your name on the cup and keep in in the fridge so that when you're ready for it, the dessert remains cool. I'm glad they actually use mascarpone in the creamy base - and plenty of it given the richness of the custard. Finally made it all the way out to try this spot. As a pasta lover, I was quite excited to try. Beware, you are going to have to wait. But there's a coffee shop next door to make it more bearable. First, you have some self serve bread. It went great with our mozzarella app. The two pastas of the day were a cuttlefish ink pasta with saltfish and a thick spaghetti in lamb ragu. The ink pasta was unique, with a lot of umami. The pasta was a little too al dente for me personally. I preferred the lamb ragu, which didn't taste too gamey. The spaghetti was thick and satisfying. We arrived on a Friday at 11:25am--they open for lunch at noon--and there were already people waiting. By the time 12 rolled around, the lineup went down the sidewalk and didn't let up for like two hours. We lucked out, it was a gorgeous sunny day in December (?!) which meant that after ordering, we could seat ourselves on the front patio, which had more seating than what was offered inside. The lunch ordering process is regimented. Only six people are allowed inside at a time, and once inside, you have precious little time to figure out what to order for lunch and whether you'd also like to grab goodies to go, like pasta sauces, tiramisu, beautiful balsamics, or bottles of wine, etc. The interior has limited seating (12 people perhaps?) and filled up instantly so we were forced to order our lunch "to go" and sit outside in the sunshine, cracking cans of Lambrusco, while waiting for our order to come up. Not a bad deal. The freshly made pasta du jour (tagliatelle) was perfectly cooked. We got one with red meat sauce, one with 'white' (buttery cheese sauce, essentially) and the latter was best. Best meal to start off a birthday! Working 9-5 means you can't really make it during their lunch hours so we took advantage of a day off to visit. The line was just approaching the corner when we arrived. The wait was around ~30 minutes. There are tables and seats across the street to have your meal. Parking lot across the street is private and not affiliated with the business so be careful. The pasta meal was just perfect. Freshly made in house and such a nice treat with the truffle add ons (+$7). It does go for $18 but my previous Baldassarre meal was 4 months back so it's a nice splurge once in a while. Tip: if you don't got cash, go inside to pay for your meal in advance, then get back in line to order your meal. The pasta is perfect and they make such memorably flavourful food that is somehow subtle and dynamic. Their pasta is so good that it makes me wish I ate pig so I could try their prosciutto. The lady next to us ate it and made it look like a religious experience. They make two different daily pastas and serve them till they run out. My honest review is between 3.5-4/5. I have always wanted to visit this place as it is one of the most worth-trying Italian places in the city. The food is amazing. From fresh pasta to making your order as you order food, they deserve 5/5. You can also take as much bread as you would like. Their kitchen space takes 4/5 of the space. No reservations. Tables are first come, first serve. They do not serve your food, so you would have to get your food once it is called. However, they do clean the table for the next guests. Some of the downsides of this place and the reason why this place won't get 5/5 from me is that. 1. A long wait time. Your food will be fresh but expect to wait outside. 2. Limited indoor seating. 3. Limited store hours. Food is only served 2/3 days in a week. You can only grab lunch from here. No dinner. 4. Price is reasonable but different menus every day. There is no set menu. There is a different menu every day. You have to check their IG, specifically their stories, to check the menu out. So even if someone got beef ragu the day before, you will not be able to get the same menu the next day. 5. Somewhat confusing pickup system. You HAVE to leave the restaurant to get your food if you are taking it out. You stand outside, and they call you through the speaker once your order is ready. If you're planning to come here prepare yourself for quite a line; for serious foodies only as this ordeal was not for the faint of heart. Was it worth it? Yes. Would I go back? Maybe on a warm summer day, sure. We got there at 11:15 on a rainy Friday, and about 2 hours later finally had our food. They have plenty of warm bread (amazing!) and cheap wine (also amazing!) to tide you over while you wait. Huddling together to protect our food from the rain, the five of us indulged in some of the best pasta you can find in the city. I got the tagliatelle with ragu, but of the ones my friends and I tried, the ravioli in red sauce seemed like the clear favourite. The noodles themselves were incredible; smooth as velvet, the perfect amount of chew, and melting in your mouth with every bite. The ragu was very good, but I do wish I chose a different sauce for my first time as the meatiness definitely overshadowed everything else. But alas, I chose it for the gains. Finally, the tiramisu was special; can't say it was the best I've had in the city as the small size had too high a ratio of mascarpone to lady fingers, but all the flavours hit the right notes. We were looking forward to trying Famiglia Baldassare for a long time but the short open hours made it a bit challenging. We finally managed to go for lunch on a Friday. We arrived just after 11am and there was already a short lineup, which only grew longer and longer ahead of the doors opening at noon. The hype is real - there were 50-75 people in line behind us. Once the doors opened and we were inside the counter staff asked if we had ever been there before and explained the process: if ordering takeout you pay at the counter and then must wait outside for your name to be called when the order is ready. The space inside is very small, so this makes sense, however due to the huge lineup it is difficult to get back inside to pick up the order once ready. The wait for our food was not long at all, though. Just over 5 minutes. The food was good and was piping hot. The options on the menu that day were spinach and ricotta ravioli and tagliatelle. We ordered the tagliatelle with ragu and the spinach and ricotta ravioli with red sauce. The ravioli was by far the tastier dish, absolutely delicious, though the portion was on the smaller side. The tagliatelle pasta was very good but the sauce was nothing special. I wouldn't wait in line again for the tagliatelle with ragu. The good thing is the menu changes daily and many other options I've seen in the past sound great. They also had plenty of options to purchase and make at home, though we did not get any this time. What lengths will you go for food? I tested myself by lining up for almost an hour (in the snow) for some fresh pasta from Famiglia Baldassarre. I almost gave up but persevered and it was worth it! We had: Tagliatelle with butter sauce topped with truffles: the noodles were sooo perfect the butter really brought out the taste and texture of the noodles Spinach and ricotta ravioli topped with truffles: this was my favourite item; the ricotta and spinach filling was flavourful but light and the butter really let you taste the flavour of the filling and added richness Perhaps I'd try to snag a dine in spot in the future as I saw some delicious looking burrata and prosciutto I do hope they somehow make it easier for patrons to line up though, as it was quite painful/annoying waiting out there. Took other yelper's advice and came at 11:30am on a crisp fall Friday. There were approximately 15 people in front of us, but the line doubled within 10 mins of us arriving. There is a coffee shop right next door so you can grab a coffee whilst you wait in line. Once they opened their doors at 12, the line moved relatively fast. We placed our order within 20 mins of them opening. However because we wanted to dine in, we waited for an additional 10ish minutes. They gave us a call when a table was available. I do not recommend coming with more than 3 other people. My boyfriend and I ordered fresh mozeralla, Parma ham (16 months) tagliatelle in ragu, ricotta-spinach ravioli in butter and parmesan. Maybe my anticipation for the fresh mozzerella caused high expectations as I found the cheese mediocre. It was on the firm side and did not have the smooth- chewy texture I was expecting. However, it was quite milky. For $6, they gave a generous portion of the parma ham. The ham was well cured, it was not overly salt and did not have a raw meat taste. The ravioli was my favorite dish. The butter parmesan sauce was addictive and thinly coated the ravioli. The filling to pasta ratio was good - it had enough filling to puff up the ravioli yet it did not burst easily. The pasta was cooked al dente. The tagliatelle ragu was quite good. The tomato from the ragu was a bit tart which kept the dish light. However, I do wish they gave us more sauce. The staff were polite despite the constant line up out the door for 2 hours. Next time, I hope to try their burrata. read more

10/10 across the board! I was finally able to stop by on Friday..... the hours do not work with my work schedule but I took the day off and knew I had to stop by for lunch! We were the one of the first people in line so the wait time for myself wasn't long but the line was consistently growing. The ravioli was AMAZING! Honestly... the best FRESH pasta I've ever had. Is it bad to say that I don't get the hype? I was in the area to visit a neighboring business and I was pleasantly surprised to see famiglia baldassare was right there AND we were early for their lunchtime service. We stood in line 20 minutes prior to them opening and were surprised to see a large line forming behind us. I got one order of their Ragu tagliatelle. It came out piping hot. A little pricy for the portion of takeout pasta, I believe it was around $18. Nonetheless, I wasn't too fazed by the price. Idk what I was expecting, but this pasta was okay. A bit over cooked for my liking - I enjoy an al dente pasta. The sauce itself was a bit oily and one note. Was it bad? No. Was it great? No. Would I return? Probably not. I don't think it's worth lining up for. But I would be willing to try their cook at home italian items which you can also buy at the store next door. read more

This place is 4.5 stars. I only wish they open more days and longer hours. Definitely hidden gem of the city; they only served lunch from Tuesday to Friday, noon to 2pm or till sold out. Not good for big group, 10-seat only. Highly recommend to get there early if you plan to dine in since line has been formed as early as 11:30am. If you cannot get first 10 seats, you can order and leave your number with them and they will call you when a table is available. Upon entered the space, you can smell nice aroma like you are coming home with delicious home-cook food. Limited daily menu is written on the Blackboard or pay attend to their daily Instagram story. Everything is very reasonable priced; actually I should say is a steal!! During our visit, we tried Tagliolini (egg noodles with butter, rosemary and porcini mushrooms), Cappellacci Verdi (green duck filled with butter and duck braise), Fior di Latte, Crudo (San Daniele D.O.P. 24 month). I love every single dish; they gave a very clean and simple taste like home made food. My favourite is Tagliolini; the egg noodle is so bouncy, al dente with nice eggy taste. The mushroom is so aromatic and fresh. Fior di Latte and Crudo are very tasty and flavourful. Cappellacci is very nice with very rich duck flavour. I wish to come here more often!! 4/5 This rating is just base on pasta. Not as a "restaurant" (it will be 3/5). Been going here for yrs now. Yes, they are good. You will be guaranteed to get some good quality home made pastas from here. HOWEVER, I absolutely hate their 2 hrs window for lunch. Also, seats are pretty nonexistent due to size of place(its basically a pasta factory/store with few seats) and crazy numbers of ppl who wish to eat here. Do take out and eat at near by park in summer time for your own good. I also recommend to buy pasta & sauce and cook at home to avoid all these inconveniences. read more

Finally came here on a Wednesday to try this unassuming fresh pasta place that I've heard so much about! It's tucked into an industrial area that isn't easily accessible (was literally a 40-min subway ride from downtown Toronto), and nested between some buildings. It's actually located next to Dark Horse Espresso, which is likewise hidden. My friend came here earlier than 12PM (which is when it opens) to line up, so we didn't have to wait long. In fact, even when I arrived shortly after 12, there was a line forming, but it was only about 10 people. As we didn't want to wait further, we decided to get the pasta for takeout. Since we don't need to wait for inside seating in the tiny communal area, we were therefore able to get our order faster. The server taking orders was super friendly, and provided great service. He had a welcoming smile and warm tone, and was able to banter casually and really well with the customers. It's an open kitchen, so you're able to see the chefs make the pasta and cook your order. Super cool! My friend and I placed one order each of their two daily specials, and waited for about ~5-10 minutes before our food was prepared. After getting some bread from the corner to sop the pasta sauce, we grabbed a seat outdoors and dug promptly into our food. The pasta of the day was cavatelli, and it came with either a lighter rapini / anchovy / pecorini dressing or a richer sugo and sausage tomato sauce. The first one, con cime di rapa, was honestly so good! It had a nice flavour to it - slightly salty from anchovy, and the generous amount of greens really helped to brighten the dish. The cavatelli was perfectly al dente, though I did find some pieces to err on the side of being a little under-cooked. However, if I were to choose, I did prefer the tomato-based con sugo e salsiccia. It had more depth to it, and was just heartier! For $12, the pasta is a steal. The portions are also super generous, which is great (I had enough for the next day)! Although we were able to save time from eating out, I would likely opt to eat-in next time. The experience is just better when you're dining on plates and not from a take-out container. Also, I found my pasta getting cold and hard even a couple minutes in, likely due to the wind and exposure from the air. I have to confess I am a pasta monster. I would be happy eating lunch everyday here at Famiglia Baldassarre for the rest of my life. Sadly they only open 4 days a week. Arrived early before the place was opened on a overcast chilly afternoon. The wait was minimum and we got to order the 2 pasta of the day, a Crudo and Asparagus to share. Nothing can replaced the taste, the mouth feel of freshly made pasta. Their menu changed daily so you always in for a treat and wondering what you going to have for lunch today. The Prosciutto crudo is a steal at the price. Must order! Sometime truffle might be available? Truffle is just magical. Everything tasted so fresh, pure and wholesome. A taste of love and caring prepared by an Italian mamma? Just go and you find out what you had been missing in your life. Make sure you bring Cash! read more
