My husband and I are both SUPER pleased with our new patient visits here. We do not have dental insurance, but the costs quoted and paid were very reasonable for the care we received. Our teeth look and feel great. Scheduling was very easy, even when we wanted "back to back" appointments together. Our differing prices were both a reflection of that they don't have a "one size fits all" approach to their patients, but also reflected an appropriate/fair scale in pricing relative to our needs. There was no "hard sell" on committing to, or scheduling, any of the additional work recommended. Just a simple printed quote we could reference in the future. The same for the "discount/club pricing" you would get for signing up with their office, which I declined, but my husband joined. Just the information made available quickly and clearly, and then you were free to move on. Everyone was SO friendly. I'm mad I didn't remember to write this review same day, so I could share specific names, but truly everyone was polite and pleasant to a degree that I can't imagine anyone working here isn't equally nice. I have been a patient here for many years. I am shocked that when my insurance changed I was not informed that I was now out of network. I had scheduled my fillings and given an estimate and prepaid. After the procedure, I was billed for an additional amount. After hearing about my experience, my coworker called in advance to make sure her cleaning was covered and was told yes. She had it done and is now being billed for almost $200. Very shady practice here. read more

I visited this dentist in early summer where I was told I needed 5 crowns and it would cost me close to $6,000. I left in tears. The dentist was nice. The office staff seemed understaffed and a little chaotic. It wasn't a very relaxing experience. I felt like they were herding sheep. And then when I was told what it would cost, I was feeling really defeated. I listened to my gut and went and got a second opinion, and I'm so glad I did. Turns out I needed ZERO crowns. My new dentist put me on a plan that works with my insurance so that I don't have to pay so much out of pocket right out of the gate. AND it was a FRACTION of the cost I was quoted at FDOM. I've gotten work done on my left side and will wait until my insurance renews at the beginning of the year to get the right side done. Highly recommend getting a second opinion if you are unhappy with the costs associated with the care recommended. read more

Family Dentistry on Manchaca is the best! I've tried several dentists in south Austin over the last 15 years and they are by far the best find. Everyone there is friendly, knowledgable, and extremely helpful. They always get me in and out quickly. Ive seen the same hygenist twice now and she's an absolute dream, gentle but thorough, and even doubled checked pricing on a couple things before starting, to make sure I was ok with stuff that might not be covered by my insurance. Dr. Bassi is the sweetest and always takes great care of me. They are honest and straightforward and I don't feel like they've ever tried to upsell me or recommend things I dont really need, which is rare these days. Beware! I went for the new patient special and walked out with a list of unnecessary treatment plans. As part of the new patient special, I was to get a cleaning, that did not happen. The dental assistant literally sprayed water all over me and said that she could not do the cleaning that day. They did not adjust the price, btw. Never saw a Dentist. Left with a "treatment plan" that included the cleaning (that was supposed to be done that day but had a full charge), a cavity (second opinion at new dentist- no cavity) and a ridiculous estimate for all these treatments I actually did not need. Worst dentist experience I've had. Dentist gave me a crown on one of my teeth. She said I might need a root canal. Dentist says I don't need a root canal and finishes. While wearing my temporary crown I still feel pain. I'm not sure if this is because the temp crown isn't aligned with my teeth right, but it hurts. Go in the get the permanent one put in. Tell dentist. She looks at it for about 1 minute and then put the permanent one on. Week goes by, tooth still hurts come back in. She grind the tooth down since it might be the way the teeth are set. Another week goes by. Go back. Now they tell me I need a root canal. Problem is I have a brand new crown on top of the tooth. They send me to a specialist. $2,000 to fix her mistake. I cry. $2,000 isn't something I should pay. 3 months later I get a call. They want $319 to pay for a build up on the tooth that was just worked on that they forgot to add to the bill. I ignored them until the bill collector letter came. What was suppose to be a $1,200 crown turned into a $3,500 job. Do not go to these people. read more

Dr. Bassi was super sweet at my first visit. I felt very comfortable walking into this office as it had a homey feeling to it, which is what appealed to me. I also try to support small businesses. I felt the staff was very personable. I had a bad experience previously, and cancelled three appointments prior to booking with Dr. Bassi due to my fear of going to dental offices. I loved her energy and liked that she checked in periodically to make sure I was feeling comfortable. Reserving 5 stars for repeat visits, but so far so good! They handled my 4 year-old's first dentist appointment exceptionally well. The entire staff is friendly and professional and obviously good with kids; they made things quick and easy for both my daughter and I. This is a practice that's really trying to sell you everything they can without tending to your needs effectively. I had to switch dentists because we moved and decided to try this place out based on good reviews and location. I had a cleaning done, which was fine. Then they told me I needed a filling on one tooth, and that I needed my crowns replaced because they were "stock crowns" and not custom fit ones. All my crowns were custom made by my previous dentist and are definitely not some off-the-shelf variety. Now, I'm not sure if they were lying or truly don't know how to tell, but either way I don't trust them with my teeth. After going to a new place for another opinion, what do you know? No filling needed since there wasn't a cavity (my current dentist: "I could see how someone might think that's a cavity at first, but it's definitely not.") We've been monitoring that spot for about 2 years now and still no filling needed since it's not decayed. My crowns were confirmed to be of good quality (my current dentist was shocked someone would suggest otherwise). On top of all that, they tried to sell me Invisalign hardcore. Now, there are a couple things weird about this. 1. My teeth are pretty straight. 2. I'm 40, and married with kids, so I don't know who exactly I'd be trying to impress at this point. But boy did they pitch that for some reason. Before I wised up and got another opinion about the filling they wanted to do, I had booked an appointment with them for it, and they made me pay half the charge up front which I have NEVER had to do anywhere else. All in all, it just feels like a place that's not trying to help you make good decisions with regard to your dental health, but instead are looking for anything they can find that will justify some procedure they would love to charge you for. Really, really, really disappointed. Went in here with the highest of hopes of finding a new dentist that wasn't just about siphoning as much money out of the insurance as possible. Sorry, I couldn't find that here. Went in for an initial exam and cleaning. When they found out I had low coverage they insisted that they could not give me a standard cleaning only the more expensive "deep cleaning" which wasn't covered and actually refused to give the standard cleaning upon request. I really ended up with nothing more than x-rays. I would recommend against bringing your family to Family Dentistry of Manchaca. This is more of a business than a true dentist. I strongly recommend looking elsewhere for dental care. Overall I felt disappointed and taken advantage of by FDM. Get a second opinion, as this dentist group are over recommending treatments. My experience: I initially went in to get a teeth cleaning when I was 8 months pregnant, as it is advised to get more frequent cleanings when pregnant due to the inflammation caused by hormones. Despite coming to FDM with insurance and seeking a regular cleaning and checkup, and being assured treatments were covered, in the end none of my treatments received were covered. I had to pay over $1100 out of pocket for treatments I was convinced I needed. I never did receive the regular cleaning I originally came in for. In my initial visit, when I was expecting the cleaning, I had to wait lying down in the chair on my back for nearly an hour for the dentist to come examine my mouth. (Incredibly uncomfortable when you're very pregnant.) I was made to take extra (not covered by insurance) photo imaging of my mouth due to being pregnant, in addition to xrays later, bc they didn't wait for the xray approval from my OB, which came within an hour of my reaching out to my OB's office at this initial appointment. After leaving without the regular cleaning I came in for, I was given an elaborate treatment plan that would have cost me several thousand dollars over the course of the upcoming months even with my insurance coverage. I was pressured to make appointments right away so I could get the most major priority work done before the baby was born. Because they so strongly advised I needed a deep cleaning right away before the baby came, I was scared into booking all the appointments immediately. I went in for 4 deep cleaning appointments, all over the holiday season in the final month of my pregnancy, while I certainly had a lot of other things I needed to do and pay for as well. The treatment plan they wanted me to book consisted of 5 crowns, and 6 fillings, including replacing the one crown I had that was only a few years old. I was so devastated my mouth was in such bad condition and was going to cost me so much time and money when I had a new baby on the way I needed to prepare and save for. Reading over my treatment plan I noticed a lot of work on teeth that already had recent fillings and sealants at my previous dentist visits in another state. I decided to get a second opinion from a dentist that other family members of mine go to, though his office is in another part of town, and upfront they informed me they were not in network for my dental insurance. They let me know what the cost of that comprehensive exam would be without insurance and I decided it was worth it, because I had a weird feeling about the doctor at FDM and the expensive and elaborate treatment plan they had given me, and it was going to be a lot of money and work I was setting up for, so I thought I should be sure. The second dentist said he had to fight with FDM to send over my xrays; his receptionist asked several times, then he called himself and they were reluctant to release them. (legally must release xrays to any dentist of your choice) This dentist examined my mouth in person, along with the xrays FDM had taken, and gave me a new prognosis and treatment plan, without knowing theirs. Rather than 5 crowns, I only needed 1, and just 5 fillings. Only 4 of the same teeth needed treatments at all. There was even a tooth that FDM was recommending for a crown that he didn't see any decay or need to fill-- based on the same xray imaging! In the end I canceled remaining appointments with Family Dentistry on Manchaca. Then I received notice that all of my dental insurance claims had been denied, due to a three month waiting period on my plan. If I had waited, those treatments would have been covered. Per the advisement of the treatment coordinators, who assured me they had checked with my insurance in advance, I booked appointments right away so my mouth didn't deteriorate. I'm sorry I ever came across this practice and suggest others avoid at all costs. read more
