I have had a rocky relationship with this location. Sometimes it's smooth sailing and other times it's a total mess. For years, I stopped coming here to the point that I forgot there even WAS a location near the Morse Red Line. But lately, because I've been grocery shopping at Morse Fresh Market more this year than I ever have in 18+ years of living on the North Side, I gave this Family Dollar a shot again. As was the case the last time, this one was pretty good. I have to compliment one employee in particular. When I first walked up to his register, I rolled my eyes because he had on headphones. Who does that? How out-of-body do you want to be to wear headphones while at the register with a bunch of customers? But somebody yelled something from the side, and he put down one of my items before he could start ringing me up. I had no clue what happened. He just beelined to another aisle. After a few seconds, I realized that they were trying to get someone out of the store. He never yelled. Didn't get aggressive. Didn't physically move anybody. Just stood there in all his "don't be tough today" aura. And the commotion left. He came back to the register, and I asked him, "Are you a security guard or a cashier?" He smiled and said, "Both." And that was when I heard his voice. He started talking, and I absolutely think he should have a side job (or a full-time career) in narration or voiceover work. He has a really intelligent, well-spoken voice that would sound great on audio books. It startled me a little because I didn't expect him to say one word, just ring me up with those headphones on. And I didn't not expect him to sound like the James Earl Jones type. I sorta heard him talking to another customer about the chocolate bars he was supposed to sell, but I didn't really listen to him closely. I talked to him briefly, and I joked about how I wouldn't recommend anybody trying him. Physically, it's just not a smart move. But he was the nicest guy. The headphones don't even make a difference. He was able to promo chocolate bars (I don't eat dairy so I didn't buy one), secure the store, ring me up and be charming at the same time. Beware of this store. For the last couple years, they have been illegally gouging customers by putting one price on the shelf and ringing up a higher price at the cash register. This is deceptive business practice, and the owner and manager should be ashamed of ripping off people! read more

I've been coming to this store ever since I moved to Rogers Park in 2016. It has come a long way. It's much better now than it was before the pandemic hit. Current staff and management are always friendly and nice to me when I come in. I think they're doing a great job. read more

This location is basura. I havent visited this store in a couple months but every time I go in there its just a feeling of such unplesantness all around. The employees seem miserable and have a generally stank attitude, even the one generally nice chatty guy crosses the line sometimes, I think he just lacks a certain level of awareness. Story time: The last time I visited this store was a couple months ago and it happened to be after a thunderstorm which knocked out their credit/debit machines so they were going CASH ONLY at the time. First, the line was extremely long and the employee behind the register was new and clearly overwhelmed, I suppose this is some type of unfortunate hazing ritual they all have to go through or something. Anyway, I waited my turn in line and the young lady running the register apparently was out of one dollar bills. Knowing this, she rang my items up anyway and my change was like, three dollars or something. After what seemed like forever waiting for who I assume was the team lead to get up there, when she finally arrived she came with such an attitude. The employee working the register was apologetic even tho I assured her the issue wasnt her fault, but after waiting in line for 15 minutes already and just generally wanting to get my change and leave, I offered to just forget the whole thing and simply ask for my money back: big mistake. "YEW CAIN'T DO RETURN ON FOOD ITEMS!" said the team lead in such an off putting manner. Apparently the stack of dollar bills needed for the employee's register was in the safe and there would be a three minute wait til they were allowed to open the safe. Fair enough, so I decided to stand off to the side and wait since people behind me would probably also need ones for change, big mistake #2: As I stood to the side of the register in the area where the ATM was, the team lead once again scolded me: "YEW CAIN'T STAND DERE, YOU GOTTA MOVE AROUN'!" Understanding that, I stepped over to the opposite side just slightly enough but not too far from the line but apparently that wasnt good enough because the team lead yelled again: "YEW GOTTA MOVE AROUN', YEW CAIN'T STAN' UP HERE!" At this point I stood my ground and said, I just wanted my change so I could leave. "YEW GOTTA WAIT THREE MINUTES TIL THE SAFE OPEN!" I could see the one employee looking mortified as she kept apologizing, and I kept telling her it wasnt her fault...I just wanted my change as I'd already been in the store longer than I planned. So FINALLY after three minutes without much fuss, I got my three dollars and left. Until somebody in upper management comes in there and really cleans house its always going to be a miserable experience. I'm not even gonna mention all the times I've gone in there and employees are literally texting on their phones and listening to music during transactions barely paying attention to the customer or the change given. read more

This was our shopping center when we bought our groceries for our store. We have a mini store in our subdivision. We sell different products. Everytime we buy here they give us a huge discount. Their products are affordable. They have different varieties of products. The only problem here was it was not organized well. I can see some boxes on the floo and also some products. There is some dirt on the floor where there is no staff to clean it immediately. There are products that are not properly in their section. So I just gave them 4 stars since their products were affordable. And I like to buy here even though their place is messy. Well I definitely will be back here over and over again. read more

Today I walked in Family Dollar to get Benadryl as I was having a severe allergic reaction. As I made it back home and realize that the box they sold me was expired by almost 6 months. I went back to get my refund and they gave me the total amount for what I spend. They didn't compensate me for anything and to make matters worse. They have so much more on the shelf expired! BEWARE! Even though I agree with some of the other reviews regarding the crammed aisles; yes, that is a problem. I also agree there may be a race issue where certain folks get treated differently. In my case that did not apply being the employees were black as well. I will also state that when I had the clerk ring me up each time, they were not super friendly and some clerks can be slightly intimidating. Well, so far I guess I'm not really painting such a great picture. However I gave three stars because it is a valuable store in this neighborhood, it is very needed and overall many of the prices are reasonable and in some cases very good. I have gotten many items I have needed there but I take a deep breath before walking in! Clean up the aisles and learn how to treat customers better. read more

Worst family dollar and store ever been to. For starters, I'm a medical professional with a good job and a kid, not a thief. I went in and the old man at cashier said he needed to check my bag. I said no you don't need to check my purse. I have my wallet, schedule book, phone and medicine in it. The lady who I think is 1 of the managers said stop it he's just doing his job. After buying my laundry supplies, I went to the alderpersons office and told them they were acting like I was walking into a prison or through airport security. They have no right to look in my purse when I walk in their and the cashers job is not to look in my purse when entering the store and none of the other employees jobs either. They have sensors for when people walk out. If they want to have people checking people when they leave the store, like Walmart, then they need to hire professional security officers or employees specifically to look at receipts like walmart does. I've gone in heir in my scrubs, coming from meetings with a small bag that has paperwork, a laptop, headphones and flash drives and they've told me to give them my bag and there's no way I'm going t give them my bag with those items. It's bad enough that there's boxes and other crap lying around the store in the aisles, but a majority of employees are rude, especially the female manager which is probably why they don't work there very long, but they want to also treat everyone like criminals and think they can search my purse when I enter. This place has improved a lot in the last year. The staff are helpful and special thanks to the young man who was shelving and told me what day something would be delivered. Now if only corporate headquarters would get some bigger bags. I don't mind paying extra. It's hard on the elderly and people without cars to be walking down the street with a big old pack of toilet paper or 10 little bags. Also you should pay the people who work there more. Particulary now when it's literally hazardous to their health. Why not hire an extra person to stand by the door like Target does and not allow entry unless customers are wearing masks? Someone big and respectful from the Rogers Park neighborhood. And I'm not talking about wearing the damn thing on your chin. Seriously Rogers Park neighbors. I've shopped at Family Dollar for years, usually not by choice. My most recent experience with Family Dollar has made me re-think buying anything at all there. It was a blisteringly cold day (12°F/windy), and I was wearing a bulky leather coat with a hoodie (with pockets) underneath. I was also wearing thick snow boots that make a loud squeaking sound when I walk on tile floors (such as they have at Family Dollar). Why am I describing my wardrobe? You'll understand soon. I should note that I was *not* carrying a bag of any kind. I mention that because Family Dollar has a strict bag check policy, pretty normal for Rogers Park. As I entered the store, I nodded to the cashier, who smiled and nodded back to me, a rare occurrence at Family Dollar. Please note: at no time did she say "hey, you need to check your coat". I went to the back of the store to grab some plastic coat hangers, and decided to see if they had any interesting Christmas stuff on sale. It was at this time I noticed a man following me around the store. He was rather unkempt, with uncombed hair, wearing a dirty gray hooded sweatshirt with a black shirt underneath, wrinkled pants, and old shoes. My first thought was that it was a homeless guy who had come into the store to get warm. I started toward the front of the store, to the registers. I stopped to check out the kitchenware aisle, as my wife had mentioned that we needed a new utensil holder. Seeing nothing I liked, I started again for the front of the store...to find my path blocked by the same fellow who had been following me around the store, now staring at me. I asked, "Is there something I can help you with?" He didn't reply directly, instead he mimed I movement I thought meant he was implying that I was fat, moving his hands up and down his mid-section. He then said, "You seem to be carrying a lot of stuff." "Do you mean in my pockets?" I asked. "Yes." he replied. I then asked, doubtfully, "Do you work here?" "Yes." he replied. "Is there a manager on duty?" I asked. He said, "I'm the manager." Ah. Well. I then asked, "Would you like to search me to see if I've stolen anything?" "Oh, I'm *going* to search you." he said. Uh, no. "Without my permission? I don't think so. At least not without the police being involved." I said. "I already called the police." he replied. So, let's recap: me = not a shoplifter. The "manager" = dressed as a homeless guy (loss prevention camouflage? or just a slob?), rude, called the police even though no crime had actually been committed. I asked him his name. He seemed to have to think about it (or come up with a fake name), then replied, "Tony." I then asked him if he was the store manager, or an assistant. He didn't answer. I asked who his district manager was. No reply. I asked him if he was accusing me of theft. No reply. I pointed out that a shoplifter probably wouldn't wear such loud boots, as I would think that they tend to want to keep a much lower profile; "Tony" just shrugged. I asked "Tony" where he intended to carry out his "search" of me. Again, no reply. I decided to take pre-emptive action: I walked up to the registers, found an unoccupied counter (under one of the many cameras they have in the store), and emptied my pockets. Every pocket I had. My sunglasses. My gum. My keys. My wallet. My change. Everything. I invited "Tony" to pat me down or check my pockets for himself. No response. I asked him if I could go ahead and buy my coat hangers while we were waiting for the cops. No reply. I gathered up the contents of my pockets, and took my hangers to the open register, where the nice cashier I'd seen on the way in shrugged at me, smiled again, and rang up my hangers. I paid (with a bank card, a wise move considering what happened next), and at this point "Tony" told her to cancel the sale. Too late, though. He told her not to give me a bag or a receipt, though. He also said I wasn't allowed in the store ever again. So petty. At this point, the cops arrived. I knew the main cop, named Conway, from around the neighborhood. He asked "Tony" (who he didn't call by any name, and I was too angry at that point to think quickly enough to confirm "Tony's" name) what the problem was. He explained that he had *asked* if it was okay if he searched me, and I had refused. Uh, no. I told my side of the story, that I thought a crazy homeless man was following me around the store, that, indeed, "Tony" hadn't *asked* me ANYTHING, and that he'd called the cops *before* he'd even interacted with me. Conway asked "Tony" if this was true, and he stammered some bullshit response, not actually answering the question. Conway told me I could go, and apologized that I had been detained. I'm not sure I learned anything from this experience, except that "Tony" is an asshole, and not very good at his job. I'm glad that there is a Target opening up close to my neighborhood soon, so I'll soon have a better option for cheap plastic hangers. read more

negative, negative, negative stars. Since my last review, this F.D. made a bit of an effort to import (cleaned up and installed a new credit/debit card swipe machine). However, as of the last couple of visits; this store is in even worse condition than the last time I reviewed it. The entrance vestibule (shared by the Scummy Sudz laundry next door) has an odor of urine and b.o. and there are black chunks of old ground in gum and other assorted nasties on the tile floor. When you enter the Family Dollar, the odor morphs into pee mixed w/moldy dry goods. People please, take a minute and call the toll free number and log a complaint about the condition of this store. It is NOT COOL to let this go on as so many store owners are working hard to improve Morse Avenue. We need the Family Dollar to stay put and the Corporate Office needs to do something about it. In any case, this store is messy and dirty and extremely slow, but it's very consistently so. It doesn't make failed attempts to get better or anything- it just stays nice and terrible. The prices are cheep, which is always a positive, but the store is always dirty looking and seems unkempt. The folks who work there are nice, but there never seem to be enough people there to make sure they can devote their time to you, and the rest of the line, and the stuff that needs to be shelved that isn't happening. I'm laughing at the reviews because this happened to me too. I have no idea if it's a race issue. I was a different race than the cashiers. I let a lady grabbing food, her arms piled, for her kids go ahead of me. Then I waited. After a few minutes, I saw they had opened a register behind me and were taking the people in the line behind me. So I waited 10 more minutes. Thanks? Here are some facts: 1) I am not a thief; I am a reasonably successful, late 50's, white, male, middle manager who carries a bag containing valuable electronics for work (Laptop, tablet, etc.) I include this info only to show that the store security is not racially profiling, but is actually an equal opportunity dick. 2) The store is Family Dollar, not Tiffanys, so the contents of my bag are already substantially more valuable than anything that I could steal from the store. 3) The only reason why you could ask me to leave my bag at the front of the store is because you think that I am going to steal something. If you didn't think this, you would be OK with me in the store with my backpack. Therefore, your logic must be to assume everyone is a thief. Following this reasoning, I sure as Hell am not going to leave my bag in the hands of someone that I do not know in a store where everyone with a bag is a thief. 4) When I am not carrying my work bag, I will not shop at any store that calls me a thief. A Family Dollar is a Family Dollar. They are mostly the same. This one though, you get to wait in line an extra long time. No matter the time of day, they only EVER have one cashier on hand and ALWAYS have a line. So, don't expect to run in this place grab some toilet paper and leave. negative stars - seriously. I've gone in here exactly twice before (horrified with the disgusting mess) this time - I wanted cheap light bulbs. I had been told they had a new manager, so I decided to risk a trip. While it's much cleaner than the last time, the staff is still loathsome. I can read - I consider it one of my skills. I was running low on something at home and noticed a HUGE sign outside that my favorite brand was on sale here! bonus! I looked for signage to reflect the sale item to no avail. I tried talking to the clerk who was stocking who insisted the sign was out dated. When I went to check out, I left my cart for a moment to review the sign dates that the special was in effect. I commented to the cashier who was more than rude. "that is for the 'SUPREME' " ... (yes - she emphasized the word "supreme") as if those who shop there were unfamiliar with the concept and couldn't appreciate it and instructed the clerk I spoke to earlier to 'get some down for me' so 'supreme means - keep it up away from the po' folk ... make them beg for the 'good stuff' that has to be kept on a high shelf to avoid shoplifting. why - I'm not sure, it's not like you can sneak this kind of package out without drawing attention. Still, I didn't care. I use the brand, let me shop! if it's on sale, MAKE IT ACCESSIBLE!!! By the time the guy got back there, I'd already 'retrieved it for myself' Yeah, I think I'll 'pay more' & shop elsewhere in order to be treated like a person. they may have cleaned it up a little bit - but it's only a matter of time (soon) that the 'new' manager is 'broken' and the wading through crap to get to get to what is on the shelves will again be standard fare. read more

This place scares me. The staff all look depressed and are very rude, slow, pathetic looking people. The store is a disgusting mess. Nothing is ever stocked. Just piles in the middle of the store. The manger is called by them ringing a bell, I don't think its a reliable system since they had to ring the bell a few times before the lady with all the keys decided to make an appearance to the check out lane. I gave this three stars because of the very cheap but decent fake christmas tree I got here. It is convenient for me, no one would travel great distances to get here. I have had people cut in front of me many times, once so a lady could return a bar of soap. And they let her. Its a bar of soap... Once I walked out because there was an argument going on between the cashier, the manager and the lady in front of me that took so long I just had to get out of there. I continue to return for bag o' socks. My gf had bad luck with some family dollar brand ibprofin. I told her it was a bad idea, but did she listen? no. I've had nothing but good experiences here (especially since they got a new manager about a year ago). I bought a watch battery and one of the employees helped me put it in! Yeah they are always busy and they aren't discerning about who comes over to the newly opened register. But, I've had them help me carry large items to the register, find q-tips (baby aisle) and hand me detergent while they are unpacking it. It's amazing how a little common courtesy to employees goes miles. read more
