They still have the occasional issue of aisles being blocked by dollies, etc; but shelves are now stocked, spills are cleaned up, the roof leak has been patched, staff open extra registers when necessary, and they handle the occasionally irritable/problematic customers with more finesse. Overall, there's been a massive attempt at improving the shopping experience for consumers.

I do not resell my finds, I use them for my house and my kids. The prices at this location have gone absolutely nuts for the last three times I've been there and I finally am taking it off my rounds. This last time I got three kids hoodies, a kids coat and two T-shirts and paid over $75. On the same trip I found many items I liked but one was a coat that was $50 and one was a pair of shoes for $45 and one was a purse for $35. I've been priced out. An older gentleman approached me at the store to ask if I could read the price on a pair of work shoes because he couldn't believe they were the $35 that was written on them. I am so sad to lose this spot.

But lately, because I've been grocery shopping at Morse Fresh Market more this year than I ever have in 18+ years of living on the North Side, I gave this Family Dollar a shot again. As was the case the last time, this one was pretty good. I have to compliment one employee in particular. When I first walked up to his register, I rolled my eyes because he had on headphones. Who does that? How out-of-body do you want to be to wear headphones while at the register with a bunch of customers? But somebody yelled something from the side, and he put down one of my items before he could start ringing me up. I had no clue what happened. He just beelined to another aisle. After a few seconds, I realized that they were trying to get someone out of the store. He never yelled. Didn't get aggressive. Didn't physically move anybody. Just stood there in all his "don't be tough today" aura. And the commotion left. He came back to the register, and I asked him, "Are you a security guard or a cashier?" He smiled and said, "Both." And that was when I heard his voice. He started talking, and I absolutely think he should have a side job (or a full-time career) in narration or voiceover work. He has a really intelligent, well-spoken voice that would sound great on audio books. It startled me a little because I didn't expect him to say one word, just ring me up with those headphones on. And I didn't not expect him to sound like the James Earl Jones type. I sorta heard him talking to another customer about the chocolate bars he was supposed to sell, but I didn't really listen to him closely. I talked to him briefly, and I joked about how I wouldn't recommend anybody trying him. Physically, it's just not a smart move. But he was the nicest guy. The headphones don't even make a difference. He was able to promo chocolate bars (I don't eat dairy so I didn't buy one), secure the store, ring me up and be charming at the same time. A long time business in the community. It opened in 2004 at this location. A few hard to find specialties like Caribbean, Latin, and West African ingredients can be found. They also have hot food service. Has quite a lot inside. It's located on Morse Avenue at Greenview and is popular with many people. They make a lot of the prepared foods made to order, so it's fresh, and there's a good selection of meats and vegetables.

Yes, their recently implemented "bag policy" is somewhat of a hassle, but I imagine they are such a small store that theft is actually an issue. Therefore they are trying to keep their profit margins in the black and I get that! They always have homeless people outside the store, many of whom I now know by name, who are just trying to get something to eat (and they do, from me and other neighbors), but it's still a liability for the store if someone steals from them. This isn't Walmart, i don't condone thieving from local markets!
