This location has been a staple on my rounds for years. It is dirty and you have to dig but I always found stuff that made it worth it. I do not resell my finds, I use them for my house and my kids. The prices at this location have gone absolutely nuts for the last three times I've been there and I finally am taking it off my rounds. This last time I got three kids hoodies, a kids coat and two T-shirts and paid over $75. On the same trip I found many items I liked but one was a coat that was $50 and one was a pair of shoes for $45 and one was a purse for $35. I've been priced out. An older gentleman approached me at the store to ask if I could read the price on a pair of work shoes because he couldn't believe they were the $35 that was written on them. I am so sad to lose this spot. read more

They can go ahead and take 'Discount' out of their name. This used to be a fair enough spot to thrift. Dirty, packed, messy, but you could get shirts for under $10. Now everything that is even half way decent is priced absurdly. You can't find a single winter coat under $40. Most consignment shops have better items and lower prices. Absolutely terrible experience at Village Discount. The workers have horrible attitudes and are rude, making shopping here completely unpleasant. On top of that, the prices are way too high for what you get. I've shopped here before, but after being treated so poorly, I will never return. This location is GREEDY. The prices are genuinely unbelievably high. It's so sad. Just because you learn how to use Google Lens to search things does not mean you should price your items to the first search result you find. I have no idea how they even make sales. My jaw was on the ground EVERY SINGLE TIME I looked at the price of a coat. There was a coat in there for $150!!!!!! I'm sorry but thrift stores should not charge more than $50 at the very MOST for ANYTHING. You get this stuff for free. And it's not like the sales benefit any cause--it's a for-profit business. Harrowing times at village discount kimball... was my favorite thrift for the last 5 years, or so. Something has changed, and the last year and a half has been a slow decline. Prices have doubled, tripled, and quadrupled -- jeans on the floor used to be marked for $4-7. Now $25-35. Insanity. The service has taken a toll too. Slow afternoon with about 6 people in line, and they had me and a few other folks change register lines five different times in the span of 20 minutes. Last time, hubby "attempted" to go in to check it out, but he smelled the piss and spurred out of the entrance. This time, Rosa J. was courageous enough to go through this adventure, but she detected no release of human bodily fluid upon entering. Thus, she stayed. I have to say that thrift stores are inspiring places to be if you try to reminisce the good times we used to have. Even though I am no longer in my early 20s, some merchandize there certainly shared some common history with me. I didn't purchase anything, though I normally would. Since the PA announcement indicated that there would be a half-price sale coming on January 1st., I will stop by again to score some stuff that I saw in the store. Like other thrift stores in town, the quality of merchandize varies. You can find a genuine-leather jacket for $35, or you can get a not-so-shabby sweater from a department-store brand for under $4, as long as you're willing to take time to dig in. As a blazer junkie, there's a ton of blazers I'm interested. Do you remember the red-velvet blazer that your awesome idol would wear on TV in 1994? I'm really surprised by the other reviews on this VDO (as well as their other locations). Can you find good stuff here? Yes!! Is this a neat, clean, well organized store with friendly and helpful employees? No! But how can anyone walk into a thrift store and expect top notch service. You shouldn't. I found 2 almost new Vera Bradley items here for a total of $5.00. Not too shabby. *Note* - When we came here, there had been some rooftop HVAC issues and water was leaking into the store. I was really shocked at how many great pairs of like new shoes I found here. Where else can you find a pair of the ultimate gold sequin stilettos in your size for $1.50? I also scored a pair of pointy toed red BCBG flats with the price tags still attached for $2. Oh and whoever stashed the pair of Dolce Pumps in the prom dresses, THANK YOU. I just scored them for a $1.35! HELL YEAH! There are definitely deals to be had here, but don't think you're just going to find things by skimming through the racks, you have to dig! Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. This store refuses to sell items without tags per their "CORPORATE POLICY" yet, more than half the items I was interested in had no tags. I asked to speak to the manager and she rudely told me to come back tomorrow, she got overly dramatic, rude and loud. Why would I come back tomorrow when I can go elsewhere with better customer service and if an item is without a tag, they have workers specifically assigned to price items on the spot. This corporation should take note of their competitors and do a better job with pricing and customer service. I volunteer with non-for-profit organizations and frequently shop at thrifts. The prices, and quantity of items at this thrift are great, but the overall setup of clothing sizes are a headache, if you want to find your size. The women's section is set up better than the men's, but that might be because there are more women employees that are employed at this location. In the men's section, things are just placed anywhere as far as different sizes, which makes it a headache. If you're pressed for time, i recommend going elsewhere, but if you have time on your hands, then this is a great place to get lost in. This thrift has a huge selection in clothing, books, shoes, but not so good of a selection in office, and household items such as tables, dressers, desks, or lamps. Señor Don says that they will open a new register if there are three or more people in line. What if there are more than three people in each of two lines? That's how it was today and I left my stuff on the counter and left after waiting 10 minutes. They seem to always be understaffed here. The cashier has to run the register, clean up, check bags, and show people items behind the counter. Don't bother checking your bag, I usually breeze through with it because you have to stand around and wait to check it, even when someone is behind the counter! And you'll have to wait again to pick it up. They do have some good stuff here occasionally, but you'll have to dig hard to find it and if something is behind the counter, it's probably not worth waiting around to see it because the price will be off the charts. They have two vintage trumpets there behind the counter now that were first marked $3000, they dropped them to $1500 the next month. They are at $350 now and still not selling. I believe the under staffing effects their sales. If they had someone behind the counter all the time, they'd sell more because people could actually see the stuff that's behind the counter. I usually don't bother because I know it will be a long wait. Another thing I have noticed is if you do stand at the counter, no employee will ever ask you if you'd like to see anything. I mean NEVER. They walk around with their eyes averted and you practically have to grab them by the collar to get them to show you an item! read more

There's one mean old lady (cashier) that speaks english, and she's scary and horrible. point #3 The guys that go here to shop are on the prowl for their next yucky victim. Unless you're also on the prowl for a toothless mexican guy, watch out, and if you're a girl, don't go here alone. Now the good part: point #1 They have clothes (sometimes really nice stuff) REALLY cheap here. point #2 most of the people who shop here wouldn't know Armani if they were strangled with their silk scarves, so there is a chance you'll find some awesome stuff. If you're a hardcore thrifter like me, this place is a gold mine. If you have zero time or imagination: go to Plato's or Buffalo Exchange or a consignment shop. If you don't mind setting aside 2 hours to dig and you can imagine a piece's potential, you'll find some OUTSTANDING deals at this and other VDOs in the city. Probably 70-90% of my outfit on any given day was thrifted from a VDO. And I have TONS of Steve Madden, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Fila, Adidas, Gap, Express...you name it, all in great condition, sometimes with the tag still on. As well as seriously vintage pieces. I regularly look up brands I don't recognize later on and most of the things I've been able to find originally cost anywhere in range the $50-100 or more...and I got them for $5 or less. It smells like someone hid dirty diapers Easter egg style throughout this place. I go through these periods once in a while, let's call it...broke! And I think, "hey, I should try thrift shopping!" It only took me about 10 minutes to figure out that I am physically unable to purchase used clothing from this place...and yes, I realize I sound like a priss, feel free to throw hate in my direction v_v But! They do have a good size book selection and they're like $0.40 each! Lot's of high school required reading and romance novels, but I found some older popular paperbacks in good shape. read more

This one has been a clusterf*** for years and it seems as if nothing has changed. Nothing is ever sorted so you really really really have to be in the mood to dig. I always am so it never affects my shopping. Today I got some good finds. A Gwen Stefani brand LAMB bag for 7 bucks, a Brighton black bag from the 1980s that I will sell for about 8 times what I paid for it. Another pair of Nunn Bush men's shoes that are wonderful and will also pay for themselves. As with any thrift store, some crap, mostly crap. Keep on pushing to find that gem. Look on the floor. Look in every aisle. The seasoned thrifters often hide good stuff in random places so they can come back for it on half price day. Beat them to the punch....look through everything! read more

So...my metaphorical Village Discount Outlet cherry has been undeniably popped; I have finally visited this one on Lawrence! I have been really trying to save money lately, and this place does make it ever so possible! I will let everyone know that all I bought there was clothing, and I was in a bit of a hurry, so I really wasn't looking around for anything else. But I was really pleasantly surprised at the variety of clothing at this place. I got a red Limited miniskirt, a REALLY cute Ann Taylor khaki shirt, a cute brown and white dress, and a halter dress...all for about $20! Everything is organized by color, so it will take some searching to find your size. And I didn't see any fitting rooms, but I am going to go out on a limb and assume that there are none, but with the prices they have, it's really not much of a gamble. The halter dress I picked up didn't end up working on me (sad...I know!) but it only cost $2.80, so I wasn't too upset. I saw someone mention the smell of this place. I noticed it too, but in all honesty (especially with it being summer and all) I expected nothing less. And the ladies who worked behind the register were old, angry at the manager, and paid more attention to each other than to me. But again, I expected nothing less. I was debating whether or not to give this place 3 or 4 stars. I ultimately decided 4 because, again, my expectations were not that high for this place. Plus...name brand skirts for about $7-10? Yes, it smells. It's full of old stuff, what do you expect? Yes, the staff is generally surly, and getting a smile out of them is like parting the Red Sea. Hey, if I worked with the smell, I don't think I'd be too cheery either. Yes, there is a population of shiftless types who hang around the parking lot drinking, and sometimes wander in the store, and certainly harass any female who might wander into range. I hate that, and have had to beat them off myself several times. But, like others have said...there are some amazing finds to be had here, for practically nothing. I've picked up like-new clothing, funky yarns, stemware, china, baskets, bags, hats, accessories, tchachkes, mugs, toys, shoes, luggage...at prices that are just ridiculous. It does take time - I wouldn't go planning on spending less than an hour wading through stuff, but the rewards are definitely worth it. This is a thrift heavy area - there's another Village Thrift on Kedzie at Irving (about a mile away), and a Salvation Army about two blocks away at Montrose. This is the biggest of the three and generally has the broadest selection - though for quality goods and better customer service, Sally's is the place. read more

I grew up in this neighborhood and yes... I used to shop here often. I couldn't afford those fancy Girbaud jeans my classmates were flaunting. But on occasion, I'd find something "cool" here. I shopped here long before the hipsters started wearing their ironic vintage t-shirts. Long before it was "cool" to look poor, that is. Now, enough of my bitterness. Back to my review... You can find anything here. Old cookbooks? Check. Acid-washed jeans? Check. Nachos? Check. I remember going to the nacho stand (at the entrance to the store) as a kid. Since I love thrift stores, I frequent this location every once in a while if I'm in the neighborhood. But there really isn't anything that I've found here that's ever been extremely spectacular. Plus, you will have to hold your nose upon walking inside, as this one seems to funnel yucky thrift store smell from their ventilation system. One more than one occasion, I've gotten run over by one of the workers rolling a clothing rack by me. She only sheepishly apologized after I let out a loud wail from the pain! Also, the staff here don't even care or acknowledge your presence, as they will place items on racks and rudely scoot a section of clothing into where you are shopping, as if you're in their way! And the all-time most hilarious thing I've ever seen here? While filing through some T-shirts on a rack one day, I saw one with the biggest blob of dried and chunky puke on it, as if it were fake...but it wasn't! It was priced and hanging up to sell! Can you say "EWWWWWWW!" ? Wait, was that the most hilarious thing? I totally forgot about the cranky cashier that everyone here always snickers about. When I used to live around here six years ago, this was my favorite thrift. I would go twice a week and never leave empty handed. Those were the salad days, my friends! Now many years have passed, all the VDOs have raised their prices, and I honestly can't remember the last time I successfully found any treasure here. Two years ago? Maybe? Despite the fact that I never buy anything here anymore and the unspoken prerequisite that one must be marinating in one's own B.O. to enter, I still swing by every few months, because the place is so funny. Mainly because of the moustachioed female employee who's worked there as long as I've gone. What a Crabby Patty! She's always got something to say. The last time I went she found a dirty diaper hanging out in the middle of an aisle and screeched, "WHO LEFT THIS SHITTY DIAPER HERE? ANSWER ME! ANIMALS! YOU'RE ALL ANIMALS!" Cathy makes this store a three. If you're a regular here, or perchance get to encounter the snappy older woman you're in for a treat. She makes jokes, she clearly doesn't love her job, but she does it well. In fact, sometimes, I think she has a softer side, I've seen it- then again I treat her like a human being. Ex. I broke a sweet awesome unicorn mug for the SO, well the handle, but it was a clean break, I still wanted it because I knew I could do something with it, she charged me 10 cents. SWEET. Now on to the store. It's more a solid 2, they get 1 for Cathy. I say 3 because the front corner is a disaster, not in that i'm a snob and don't get thrift stores kind of way, but in a wtf who the hell is okay w/that fire hazard pile of shit kind of way. It's not safe and never cleaned up, ever. I've been there enough to say so. So the goods, I get all kinds of tacky fabrics there + Shoes, I've scored a few decent Macy's quality brands there with tags on the bottoms still + Fostoria, twice now I've walked out with 1960s fostoria glass + Parking lot + Takes cards for over 5 dollars+ Now, the bads...sadly, kind of out weigh the goods. Rude Rosy should be the new name of this place. Yes, I used to be a big fan of this Village. But the attitudes and rudeness get me everything time. I had already hit up my fave location on Clark already this week, still needed so more glassware for a project. So walked in. Everything disarray for the most part. But I found what I needed. But its the register I dread most. Both cashiers who work here usually rude, with the older lady being very vocal with hers around the store. She is bad and I now walk out whenever she is there. Today, I got the mid age lady who got an attitude when I asked for an addition paper bag for my glass items to line them. She had put my items in the bag with other class item's break. Great. I had to ask for paper and do it myself after the sale. I give this store 3 stars due to the great items you find. I have found Vera Wang here before in great condition. This place is HUUGEEE. Two floors. You can find ANYTHING. However, it is very messy and barely organized. Slightly smelly, but I've learned to endure thrift-store smells (It ain't that bad.) Cheap prices. There are discounts on items with tags of a certain color. Look hard, be determined, sift through the crap, and you may find some worthwhile items. For example, I went into the store determined to find a sweatshirt with my college emblazoned on it. I FOUND IT. Next-to brand new, as well! I've also found quite a few name-brand items, like Abercrombie and Fitch and Victoria's Secret PINK. Girls my age: try the little girls and boys sections. Some junior's clothes end up there. If you're patient, you may be rewarded here. Don't give up too quickly. If your arms get tired easily, then go do some push-ups. The Village Discount has been my favorite place in chicago to shop, But this one is only good for certain things... 1. It's great for a clothes, i found a dior blazer here 2 vintage gucci bags and 2 pairs of coach shoes. and a Longchamp bag - ( i know my designers and how to prove if real or not so i always ask to see before purchase). 2. They have a good amount of FAKE designer handbags they charge to much for. 3. I don't care for the staff half the time. Andy the guy who seems to be the manager is rude half the time, and that cathy lady needs to shave her mustache and stop being rude to the customers. 4. They need to clean up that section with the toys and electronics and organize it better and make it easier to move through. 5. It's great for Records -they have decent selection- . They have a decent Jewelry/Book Section The clothes section is decent for blazers/ coats/shoes 7. They don't have furniture really- they just disappoint there. I enjoy the half off sales- everything is mega cheap! I've gotten some great finds here. I like it but it surely needs improvement but its right by the train which makes it easy to access. read more

If I could award this place with NO STARS, I would. I have shopped in this store since I went to high school in the neighborhood, 15 years ago. Every couple of years, I stop in and give it another chance. It has been the same every time, a huge disappointment. I don't care that this store is big, really big as far as thrift stores go, because it's dirty. It's not just dirty, it's also completely disorganized, stuff is everywhere, clothes are on the floor, etc. Now, there isn't a fitting room in this store, which could be forgivable if the prices of the clothes weren't so high (high by thrift store standards). In fact, this is probably why there is SO MUCH STUFF, is because their prices are simply too high on a lot of items. Almost nine dollars for a no-name brand used black cotton dress that has light piling is a complete joke. even on half-off color days or special sales, is more than I would spend on that. Let's not neglect to mention the staff that works here. Over the years, I have always been treated like total crap by the employees. I have yet to encounter one that was not rude, mean or literally pushy (Yes, I have been physically pushed by them on more than one occasion as they try to walk past in an aisle. The best part is when they yell at you when they're doing it...). I feel sorry for you if you grabbed something that was missing a tag or if the tag fell off in your possession, because I've gotten yelled at (yes yelled at) for that too as they snatch the item out of your hand and tell you that you have to come back the next day for it. Just don't expect them to set it aside for you. Oh no, you'll have to DIG through the entire store just to find it again. Good luck. My final complaint? They staple the price tag to the front of the garment with 2-3 staples. That means everything has holes in it from the staples. With there being many other thrift stores in this neighborhood, I advise you to save yourself the headache and skip this one. It's right near the Kimball brown line, so I go here real often. I would say the chances of finding really cool stuff every time is slim, but once in awhile you can find something really cool. I recently found a Bob Mackie "wearable art" suit jacket, and I used to find an occasional piece of acceptable original wall art, but I haven't lately. The clothes sure do get disarrayed in there, falling all over the floor, but I don't see how that is the fault of employees since customers in there throw stuff around. I do think they could arrange the furniture a whole lot better, so you can actually walk past it, and I am glad they let you use the bathroom. Even though it doesn't have a lock on the door, it's nice they let you use it. As far as employees go, I love Kathy, one of the cashiers. Some people think she's mean, but I think she's really amusing, and always love listening to her joke around. When I go in, I'm disappointed if she isn't working. There is, however, a middle aged Indian lady in there who is a real grump.She used to scowl at me, and one day she told me I was trying on too many clothes, so I had to go complain. I also find it irritating to see so many people get the boot on their cars in the parking lot. There is a guy who stays in the lot all day long just to catch people walking off to someplace else. He then boots their vehicle and you hear them screaming, "Oh, my God!!!, Oh, my God!!," or something similar. read more

Sure, it takes a while to sort through their messy racks and lots of the stuff is pretty hideous and you need to wash everything before you can wear it, but I've found some great things here. I went there today and I found 5 shirts and 4 pairs of pants and my total was less than $17. Since they don't have a dressing room...two of the things didn't fit me, but hey...I still got good deals. The store is messy, and lots of the stuff is junk, but at least this thrift store has some good stuff...and when it's good, they don't jack the price up on that item. This is truly the mecca for all things tacky! As you can see from my other review, this is the store that kicked off me and SJ's resale madness. On my last trip, ironically about this time last year, I had found one of my favorite Lady Gaga dresses here for $8. So, after two other stores with nary a tacky Christmas sweater, I had to stop here. You see, I am hosting a bad Christmas sweater contest at work and since I'm the resale queen, I need to BRING IT! This is also the place, during that fateful visit last year, where I witnessed a brave chap buying what had to be the funniest tacky sweater EVER! It was a very ethic number, Peruvian I venture to say, with little people sewed into it with yarn hair. It was fabulous so I had a good feeling about returning here. I convinced my coworker Bethany to follow me to this store after no luck at the previous one because, to quote the Black Eyed Peas, "I had a feeling." Not only did we each find perfect sweaters as well as one for our coworker Mirna -but Bethany happened upon the most ridiculous Lady Gaga inspired blouse....it's epic. I cannot wait to make my friend Sarah Jayne pee in her pants when she sees me in this blouse! Another successful trip to Village Discount Outlet. Special shout out to worker Cathy who should have her own reality show. She has worked there for 25 years and had a wit so sharp she almost cut my tags off with her sarcasm. Yeah, you have to dig through stuff sometimes... and ok, watch out for the employees, they will run you over with a clothes rack... but I have scored many great apartment items here. This is my go-to thrift store, because this one is a 7 minute drive from my apartment, and I never leave empty handed. There is usually parking, and I personally have gotten to know the employees due to me being a regular. The store itself tends to be a mess, especially near the books and kitchen supplies. The staff is notoriously loud during their conversations, and the last thing they want to do is help you or address your concerns. Be aware that they absolutely will NOT sell you anything without a price tag/sticker, seems to be a rigid new policy. Its a very poorly run establishment and my heart goes out to the rude employees. I really adore the hidden gems Im always coming across here! I attatched a few photos of tops I've snagged. Fellow shoppers have always been polite to me during my experiences. If you think this store deserves three stars, you don't go to a lot of thrift stores. One of the worst Villages in Chicago, this store, unlike other huge Village Discounts, doesn't even have a second floor furniture room. The front part of the store is populated by eBay "hawks" hounding the overworked staff over porcelain figurines in the display cabinet, the rest of the store is so cramped you can't fit a person and a stroller through the clothing aisles... and there are plenty of strollers. I love thrift stores, I live for them, I have furnished my house with thrift store merchandise, and yet I have not once found something worthwhile at this particular Village. (Okay, that's not 100% true, I have scored some cute plastic costume jewelry.) I am writing this review as a service to those who value thrifting and prefer a keener eye: if you really want to get your hands dirty while listening to Jon Secada deep cuts, shop here. If you want more quality, better-organized merchandise, furniture or housewares that aren't dirty and broken, look elsewhere. read more
