Black Friday is a liquidation store with items ranging from cosmetics, toys, clothing, small…read morehousewares and more. I believe most of the stuff comes from Target. There are rows of bins and you have to dig deeper in some than others. There are also items lining the walls that are separately priced than whatever "dollar day" amount is advertised. I've been on $10, $4 $3 and $1 days. (Where everything in the bins in that price) I have found the best stuff for the best deal on $1 days. Mostly kids items and cosmetics. My only real complaint is they allow shopping carts. The aisles are tight, the place isn't very big and the carts take up the aisles and I've been many times where I can't get down any aisle due to the amount of people using carts. They have baskets which is great and I wish more people utilized those instead of carts. Overall it's worth checking out on various dollar days to see what deals you can get.

I have a friend Michael who is a successful psychiatrist out in Los Angeles. He has done very well for himself and has certainly put in the years and years of hard work and dedication in his field to achieve his success. We will often find ourselves fretting over something that costs us an extra $20 as if we were back in the Bronx when our parents lived from paycheck to paycheck. I remember my Grandmother, may she rest in peace, would literally run from store to store to store when she did grocery shopping to save a few pennies here or there. And I am the exact same way. Always shopping at thrift stores, always walking to the back of the store to see what is on sale or needs to be liquidated. Always looking at the price on the menu and not focusing on what I really want. It has served me well in that I have never been in debt, but there is some element of feeling I'm not deserving of something off the top shelf. I finally broke out of my box this weekend as I headed to Casual Furniture World up on Lawndale Avenue with the spirit of my Mom with me the entire time. Mom would yell at me all the time in a loving way, "Why do you always buy second hand clothes and furniture? You work so hard. Why don't you reward yourself and get something nice and new? Why do you always get an old used car? Why don't you treat yourself? You earned the money. You're not asking anybody for anything. You deserve it!" With Mom's voice in my head and heart I drove up Lawndale to Casual Furniture World. As soon as I walked in and saw the salesmen and all the beautiful stuff I got nervous. I'm not used to this. They professionally left me alone for a while as I wandered around looking at gorgeous outdoor fireplaces and tables and chairs and couches and anything you could possibly think of. Eventually a salesman named Jim approached me and asked me if I needed help and the journey began. Jim and I zeroed in on three outdoor sectionals; two wicker sets and one teak wood. I found Jim to be helpful but not pushy and after he quoted me what each of those sectionals would cost and I clutched my pearls, I asked for a little time on my own to make a decision As I walked around contemplating making a $4,000 investment, I was in awe of the gorgeous inventory they had at that place. Nothing is cheap but everything looks quality. They had everything from sectionals to chairs to tables to benches to umbrellas to outdoor fire pits and fireplaces. I kept circling around to this one set that caught my eye. I could just envision myself relaxing on that sectional or even moving some of the pillows and taking a nap on my new screened in porch. But $4,000 when I could get something like this at Home Depot for a fraction of the cost kept tugging at me. And then suddenly I heard Mom's voice and she reminded me that I am buying this furniture and built my screened in porch from the money she left me when she passed last year from covid. On top of that, I could not stop thinking about all the families that within one moment were stricken with tragedy when that condo collapsed in Florida just a few miles from where my grandparents used to have a condo in North Miami Beach. In the end I listened to my Mom like I usually did and purchased the beautiful set. What was even more fun is that the pillows are custom made so I got to pick out some cool colors and not the usual gray black and tan that I usually get. I forgot to ask how long it takes and when they told me 8 to 10 weeks I was kind of shocked but then I had to remember that we are still dealing with the pandemic and nice things take time. I put down my deposit and headed on out and then noticed that they share the space with New Garden Nursery which I had not been to in many years. Cool! As I sat on my almost finished screened in porch this morning with a cup of coffee, I could not help but think how blessed I was to have my beautiful mother for 92 years and that she was giving me this porch and that beautiful outdoor furniture sectional as a gift. How lucky am I? I cannot tell you if there are other stores like Casual Furniture World in the Greensboro area but if you are looking for quality and a large inventory and great service, I was very impressed with this place. In a couple of months I will be sitting on it, hosting friends on it and at night when I remove the pillows and sleep with the sounds of the crickets and birds, I will remember how blessed I am and how much Mom and I loved nature. Moral of the story... Once in a while it's good to just go for it and treat yourself. You deserve it and time is short! Right, Mom??

I didn't make it to the grand opening celebration when Y'Nen Nie first opened his doors back in…read more2010, but I did head over there a couple of weeks later. From what I'd heard, the grand opening was a pretty big shindig. Earl Jones even showed up... but that's not really saying much; that piece of shit would probably have attended a Klan rally if he thought he could milk a couple of votes out of it. Greensboro and its environs are home to the largest population of Degar people (also called Montagnards) outside of Vietnam. If I recall correctly from speaking with Nie years ago (he was not there on this most recent visit), he had come here with his family in the '80s after fleeing Vietnam, and for a while had worked at nearby Sam's Meat Market (which I believe might have traded mastodon meat when it first opened in the late Pleistocene days - http://www.yelp.com/biz/sams-old-fashion-meat-and-seafood-market-greensboro), where he had built relationships with customers in the area, beyond the sizable community of refugees and their families. When I did visit Nie's for the first few times, it was a clean and welcoming place, and a much-needed bright spot in the neighborhood (where I'd spent a substantial part of my childhood, and I called home for just a couple of years). Over the past four decades, this northeastern part of town, off of Summit Avenue, US-29, and Cone Boulevard, fell into a steep decline, in spite of impotent efforts to stall the process. Nie's was one of these small steps that people hoped would bring about a little change. Instead, that bright, clean market that I'd crossed town to visit a couple of times in its first year has been stricken, and the disease which has claimed the rest of the area has now overtaken Nie's, as well... like a cancer, but without the concerted efforts of caring people to cure the disease. These days, Nie's is yet another casualty of the blight of the Summit Avenue corridor. The front counters are now hidden behind acrylic glass. Some aisles are blocked by filled cases of merchandise, to inhibit shoplifting. A quarter of the store is just an open and nearly empty space. When I walked in, no one said "Hello" and I received no interactions of any sort until I approached the cashier to pay. I had to keep looking over my shoulder, out of fear that Michael Douglas might walk in and start smacking people's kneecaps with a bat for not understanding English. All that aside, however, Nie's still offers this part of town the best selection of Asian food items, as well as those from Africa and Latin America. Finding things is not always easy, as some items' locations do not seem entirely appropriate (looking for Chinese Maggi seasoning, I finally found it beside Ghanaian honey, for around $3). Nie's also is one of the few places where one can still find loose beans, though the selection is limited to their most marketable few varieties (those that grow cloud-piercing stalks leading to a land of anserine alchemists and massive mongoloids must sell out quickly). Generally, however, Nie's is a standard Asian market... though one where I saw a woman buying drugs from her car around the side of the building. Its offerings are much more robust than Dega Market, in the shopping center down the street (http://www.yelp.com/biz/dega-market-greensboro). Developers, non-profits and politicians will not get around to making a positive change to this area any time soon, but customers can do their own little part in the meantime.

A lot of the furniture has cosmetic damage and/or is just terrible looking. Some of the couches look like it could have came from the 1970s. Not saying you can't find a hidden gem, but I would not drive a long distance to search. I did find a nice looking fire pit with Adirondack chairs that I would have purchased, but it was black only. Unless you have it under some shade, black chairs in the South means burning your ass in the summer. Most of it is junk nobody wanted to buy online, returns or has minor cosmetic damage. I have been here several times in the past week and have gotten pieces of such great quality. My first item was a 4 chair dining room chair set for $135, which was perfect with my dining table thrift find and for my home. Even my cats love sitting in the chairs. My second item was a nightstand set where I had to put everything together (this is where I met LaKita). I had questions about the measurements and went above and beyond to allow me to open the box to take the exact measurements I needed. My third item was a dresser that fit my coastal theme with seashell handles I have my eyes on. She definitely remembered me, followed up with how the nightstands were going, and was glad to see me back there. The combination of the quality in these items I have bought and LaKita's customer service is the perfect reason to keep returning to this store for my future needs, whether it's furniture pieces or simple DYI materials.

Had some time while in Greensboro, so I visited their Hamrick's location. As compared to some…read moreother locations, the store seems more spacious and organized. If you have never been to a Hamrick's, the main feature is economy pricing on clothing. They have a large ladies department, with a fairly good sized men's department as well. There are also departments for home decor, kitchen, and "as seen on tv" gadgets. I found a few things, such as men's undershirts that were at a good discount. Check out employees were prompt, polite, and professional. Another nice feature is a seating area for tired shoppers (or husbands that got dragged into the store!)
