Bopping around Hamtramck for Paczki Day and Claudia K picked up a half dozen for us to try. ...for science! They admittedly weren't on my radar for packzi but I was pleasantly surprised by their offering. They're smaller, rounder, and more deeply fried than the others you find in Hamtramck, but fluffy, not terribly heavy, and the filling was great. I had the cherry and it was the traditional thick, clear jelly that occurs not in nature but in donuts and had great flavor. A little tart and not overly filled. A little went a long way. Tried this place today for the first time. I seen donuts and immediately stopped lol. I am from California so trying something new was up my alley. I got me a few donuts then ordered a few things off the menu. Naan bread was amazingly good. Got some hummus to go with it. It was delicious. Then ordered a lamb sandwich aswell as fried chicken and fries which was the best i had in a very long time! French fries were perfect nice crispy and hot and seasoned good. The fried chicken was amazing the crispy the crunch the seasoning the meat everything about it was good!!!! Amazing prices. This was the worst donut I've ever had in my life. I'm not kidding: I took one bite of my double-chocolate donut and immediately marvelled at how terrible it was. I foolishly doubted my own taste buds because surely a donut can't be THAT bad, right? So I took another bite off the other end. Nope, just as awful. I think they honestly didn't put any sugar in the dough, AND they waaay over-worked the dough causing the gluten to turn tough and hard. I threw the whole thing in the trash, which is the first time in my life I've ever done that-- even subpar donuts are usually worth finishing, but that was out of the question with this one. Did this place change owners? They still have all the same signs, but the pastry selection was very sparse, the case on the left side is all Yemeni/Bangladeshi hot food just like at Al Bishr, the entire right half is closed off and empty. I doubt there are any "fresh bureks" being made these days, and I'd be afraid to eat them anyway. This is a shame; I have great memories of this place in the past, but in a metro loaded to the gills with an impossible number of outstanding donut shops, I'll stay the heck away from this one from now on. read more

This review is soley for the Burek. I would recommend calling in advance to make sure they have some left. They are filled with either cheese or ground meat. You can also choose between a fluffy u shaped pastry and a flat pizza shaped pastry. They are equally good, it really just comes down to preference. They are served at room temperature. I tried heating them up in the microwave when I got them to go once, but I prefer them at room temperature. There is a park a few blocks away, between Yemen and Evaline St, where you can enjoy your Burek if the weather is nice. read more

Agree with the reviews that the burek are a better draw than the doughnuts- a lot of the doughnuts really seemed not quite to meet the definition of a doughnut though it's hard to explain why. My favorite treat was the apple fritters and in general filled pastries were superior to regular ones. read more

I came here on a whim this morning while driving to pick up a client for court. I thought, what the heck, I'm hungry, have a few minutes to kill so I swung in here to get a doughnut. Considering the side of town that it's on, it's actually not half bad. Walking in, I wasn't sure what to make of the place, but at 7 something in the morning, the place was hopping. People were streaming in and out, sitting down with their coffee, so on and so fourth. Now mind you, it's a large place, but in poor shape and slightly outdated. The bar stool I sat on was torn to shreds and wobbly. Bars over the back door, outdated interior to say the least. Aesthetics aside the place actually is a really cool doughnut shop. Plenty to choose from, totally affordable and tasty to say the least. If you can get past the ugliness of it, you will be pleasantly surprised at not only the service, but the pastries as well. I had no idea what a burek was... but then I had one... and now my whole world has changed. It is a fried layered dough concoction with meat or cheese filling. It is HELLA tasty. And probably super bad for you. Which is why it must taste so good. The doughnies are OK. Nothing special other than they have paczki. Lemon paczki, blueberry, raspberry... but not a whole lot of variety. What I loved about this place was the loud Polish men kvetching loudly in Polish. It just brought a smile to my face. Love this place Amazon's food when I vist my family in Hamtramck I always go here in the mornings.

Typical local donut and coffee shop. Not the best selection but not terrible either. They do have hot food for lunch as well in the glass case. Chicken and other stuff included ethnic inspired rice. Not a bad spot especially if your in a hurry. read more

Anthony Bourdain knows his stuff!!! Never bought a donut here in my life. I've been coming here for years for their Burek. Since I'm Yugoslavian (Serbian) I know burek and yup these guys come close. The Bosnians make it the best in my opinion. The meat burek is my preference, the cheese is good but meat and onions add so much more flavor. I was in Detroit visiting a month ago and brought 3 pies back with me on the plane to Miami lol yup is was all worth the hassle!! I put it in the freezer and warm it up in the oven whenever I'm craving MY soul food. Whenever someone asks me what would your last meal be, guess what I would say.... BUREK! read more

I cannot wait for Anthony Bourdain's show. This is a great corner donut place. I go to Caribou by my work in Troy and get a medium coffee and muffin for $4. At Family Donut, a large coffee (a little weaker, sadly), and a superior pastry for $2.30! The custard filled pastry is number 1. I stop at FD between 2 and 3 times a week before leaving Hamtown for work. Any more, and my waistline would pay. read more

This is a great place for coffee, donuts, even lunch. Very simple, authentic and an amazing value. I own the bar across the street, and on Friday nights when we finally get out of there at 4 a.m. we go across the street and get burek or pasties from the ladies at Family Donut. You can smell them baking donuts as early as 11 p.m. the night before. The cheese burek is truly amazing. I toured Serbia for two weeks and they gave us burek every morning. I hadn't had it again until we started going to Family Donut and it's exactly the same! It's delicious. Friends say the meat pasties are delicious as well. Everything is cheap and delicious, and it really makes you feel good to partronize a local, family business above a chain restaurant. read more

A sprinkled, frosting covered urban oasis next to Chernobyl, USA, this place was the highlight of my visit in Hamtramck. The guy manning the showcase was all smiley and eager from the second my foot hit the linoleum, and the girl working the register was carrying on about this and that with a customer, but she still got me on my way, asap.
