The staff are really nice and patient with everyone there. They gave us their recommendations and helped us pick something out. We had the JT Special and the Chop Meal. The chicken wings in the JT special was delicious! Perfect to go with the waffles. The fried turkey chop was a little dry for my liking. As a whole, I think the foods decent and the staff are all very friendly. They also give you a lot of food for a good deal.

This order was brought to me via door dash.. I ordered a Sweet potato cake, sweet potato 4" pie and black eye pea and collard green soup. Let's start with the soup... I didn't get to taste it. As you can see this leaked completely through the brown bag it was placed it. The moment i lifted this bag, the entire container went through it and on the floor. REALLY!!! Horrible order packing on this one. As you can see the bag had no chance... sigh... Next up the sweet potato cake... I didn't get that either. Apparently they were out of it. That's truly the only thing i wanted. Rather than the restaurant reach out and ask about a substitution or refund option, they subbed the item on their own with cheesecake!!! They then had the audacity to UPCHARGE me for the cheesecake that I didn't even ask for nor want. Are you kidding me????It would have take 2 minutes of basic customer service to not lose a customer.

OMG good! I popped in for some pie and ended up getting pie, the soul weekend special and some body items from the pop up shop in side. The service was impeccable. Okay. So let's get into the food. I'm only did the original sweet potato pie minis (2/$8) and it was so good. The pie filling itself but that crust was so delicious. Buttery and smooth. Now the surprise of surprise... the soul food special. I got the salmon croquettes and honey I was instantly transported to my mother's kitchen. I haven't had croquettes in about 15 yrs. The sides were the perfect accessory. I took two bites in the car and had to call them before hitting the road to let them know it was just that good. Do yourself a favor and go here. Now! I will definitely be returning the next time in the area.

I first came to Sweet Potato Sensations a few years ago with my mother for Thanksgiving pies and have been thinking about them since. This was one of the first stops I made on my trip back to Detroit. I got little individual pies - sugar free sweet potato, two sweet potato and a pecan/sweet potato combo as well as their amazing banana pudding. Everything was as good as I remembered it, if not better. The service was great as usual as well. Definitely worth the wait (when there is one) and absolutely recommend any and everything off the menu!

Listen, I go down to Eastern Market every weekend just for these sweet potato pies. I always get the personal size- so you won't get too fat. Everyone is super nice at the table. The pies taste just like my grandma's. Highly recommend!

The restaurant/cafe style establishment was nice and very clean. I was visiting family for the weekend, since it was my dad's birthday. I wanted some peach cobbler and this spot did not disappoint. The pie was delicious!!!! If you want a whole pie, you must order in advance a few days ahead, I believe. I have tasted a lot of pies in my 54 years and this was by far the best!! My only complaint is that the pie was really pricey. I would charge $5, instead of $7 or $8. I think it was $8.

Ask the Community - Sweet Potato Sensations

Do the sweet potato pies need to be refrigerated? I bought one yesterday and left it out on the counter and just want to make sure it's still ok to eat... thoughts?!?

I never thought to refrigerate mine. They were out for a few days (inside containers, of course) as I gradually finished them off. I think they'll be fine unless they get old enough to show signs of mold.

Monroe Street that it's located off of is under heavy construction currently so it may be a bit treacherous navigating the sidewalk outside, but the pastry shop remains open and continued to enjoy heavy foot traffic during the hour I was inside. The staff members are friendly and recommended the baklava as their most popular pastry, so I ordered one dipped with chocolate and pistachio, along with an iced latte. They had about five small tables along the wall for you to sit and eat at, but the benches are wooden and not the most comfortable for use as a study spot. My coffee was nothing to write home about, but the baklava was flaky and very sweet, definitely one of the best I've tried. They had a huge variety of other pastries too, and if they all taste as good as they look, would be worth checking out too.

The carrot cake looked delightful but the slice of red velvet looked a little dull. When it was time to indulge we started with the red velvet slice and discovered it was a waste of calories if you're a red velvet fan - the cake was dry and the cream cheese icing was anticlimactic. On the other hand the carrot cake was amazing - super moist and got a 2 thumbs up. In addition I will say the staff was very friendly and patient especially with our loads of questions. I will go back but the red velvet will not be purchased again. Also I love the overall look and feel of this bakery but do wish it had more seating.

I ordered cookies, a scone and tea this morning. Please note that Thursday morning special is only until 11am or right before. I went a few weeks back at 11:30am and staff said "I guess it stopped and switched over." Today was the special pricing for most of it. I also ordered a veggie quiche that came with dressed greens. I would not recommend as it was excessively salty. The spinach seemed to not be chopped and layered near the top. I wish I had stopped at the sweets. Best part whether special or not was the cookies. I don't know if they are baked daily or not, but they were kept in a plastic containers. The space is small, but dining at the Jolly Pumpkin tables is allowed. The management doesn't clearly care because staff is not fully trained. I tried emailing feedback on the Thursday special and no reply after 2 weeks or so.

We probably would've skipped it if we'd realized how pricy they were. The cupcake was incredibly decadent and delicious (encased in a milk chocolate shell, inside were a layer of whipped cream and layer of chocolate ganache atop a moist and delicious cupcake). The custard in the eclair was overly rich and the dessert itself too chilled to be especially enjoyable. On a future visit, I'd split the decadent cupcake two ways and skip the eclair.
