Family owned establishments just warm my heart!! They have so much food that's made with sweet potatoes it's amazing. Their sweet potato pie is delicious. I had the pleasure to dine in once and it was nice to sit and see the love that this place gets. Service was met with a smile. This order was brought to me via door dash.. I ordered a Sweet potato cake, sweet potato 4" pie and black eye pea and collard green soup. Let's start with the soup... I didn't get to taste it. As you can see this leaked completely through the brown bag it was placed it. The moment i lifted this bag, the entire container went through it and on the floor. REALLY!!! Horrible order packing on this one. As you can see the bag had no chance... sigh... Next up the sweet potato cake... I didn't get that either. Apparently they were out of it. That's truly the only thing i wanted. Rather than the restaurant reach out and ask about a substitution or refund option, they subbed the item on their own with cheesecake!!! The staff are really nice and patient with everyone there. They gave us their recommendations and helped us pick something out. We had the JT Special and the Chop Meal. The chicken wings in the JT special was delicious! Perfect to go with the waffles. The fried turkey chop was a little dry for my liking. OMG, had it not been for the taste test I had at the Eastern Market, I would not have known about this company. The sweet potato pies are nostalgic. They are sooooo good. OMG good! I popped in for some pie and ended up getting pie, the soul weekend special and some body items from the pop up shop in side. The service was impeccable. Okay. So let's get into the food. I'm only did the original sweet potato pie minis (2/$8) and it was so good. The pie filling itself but that crust was so delicious. Buttery and smooth. I first came to Sweet Potato Sensations a few years ago with my mother for Thanksgiving pies and have been thinking about them since. This was one of the first stops I made on my trip back to Detroit. I got little individual pies - sugar free sweet potato, two sweet potato and a pecan/sweet potato combo as well as their amazing banana pudding. Everything was as good as I remembered it, if not better. The service was great as usual as well. Went back today- Nov. 22, 2024; bought the soup again an I even raved about how good it is to my Niece who was with me. Got home and settled in to eat my soup. I was very disappointed! It was thick with lots of black eyed peas, which were tough, not done, and minimal collard greens! The seasoning wasn't even the same. I have been looking forward to go to Sweet Potato Sensations for years. I've been hearing about it. I remember the Clintons came went there on one of their campaign trips to Detroit. I am a retired teacher and did a longterm subbing job at a school that is very close by. Every time I tried to go there it was closed. My son and his wife were visiting from Chicago and I wanted to bring them there, but again they were closed. One day I was finally on that side of town and went in on my own and they were open! I was the only person in the store. I asked the clerk a question. She seemed totally uninterested in helping me and acted like I was bothering her. She didn't smile once. I bought four small pies. They were not as good as I expected. I felt very unwelcome. Because I'm not from the local community? Not sure, but I don't think I'll go back. read more

The pie was delicious!!!! If you want a whole pie, you must order in advance a few days ahead, I believe. I have tasted a lot of pies in my 54 years and this was by far the best!! We've always wanted to try Sweet Potato Sensations and are trying to support small businesses, so we decided to check it out for brunch. Seeing that pancakes and waffles don't travel especially well, we packed up our coffee, favorite syrup and hot sauce and headed to pickup some takeout to eat in the car. While the staff was incredibly friendly and their safety measures strong, their pickup system could be fine tuned. Despite the phone message offering curbside, we were told you needed to come inside. We ordered over the phone and were texted when our order was ready. Unfortunately, there was a line outside waiting for their turn to go inside. I completely understand the need to limit people inside, but the line moved slowly and by the time my husband got the food back to the car, it had cooled significantly. It seems like one person doing curbside delivery, while another helps people shopping the bakery selections would be more efficient. We enjoyed our meals of sweet potato waffles, sweet potato pancakes, salmon croquettes, turkey sausage, turkey chop and black-eyed pea & collard soup with a sweet potato cornbread. Our favorites were the soup, turkey chops and turkey sausage. The food was tasty, but I feel the prices were a bit on the high side. We also brought home a sampling of desserts including peach-mango cobbler, sweet potato cake, sweet potato and coconut and sweet potato pecan mini pies. They all look amazing, but we're still too full to try them yet. I wish I could give half points in this case, because I'd give this place is a solid 3.5. Update - After trying some of the desserts, I am changing my review to four stars. The sweets are the strong point of SPS and very good indeed! read more

I'd not been here in a while but when I was seeing a Redford theater movie I automatically thought of them. They don't keep late hours but they were open matinee times so I couldn't resist. I had the collard green black eye pea soup (which can be had without meat) and just loved it. But they are of course known for all types of sweet potato cookies cakes , pies, cheesecakes,etc but their lunches are good too. it's a smaller eat-in area and mostly a Togo place with a thriving repeat business.
