Family Formation is hands down THE BEST business I've ever found on Yelp and I'm going to be counting my lucky 5-stars (see what I did there?) every day for the rest of my life that I found them. Thanks to Megan and the Family Formation team my husband and I finally have a daughter! It was a long road to get here (8 years, 2 rounds of IVF, 5 rounds of IUI, candle burning, fertility massage, acupunture, mystical treatments and more hormone injections then I care to remember) but honestly I believe everything happens for a reason, and meeting our gorgeous baby girl I can honestly say it was all worth it. The amazing thing is that after signing up with Megan and Family Formation the "wait" was almost nothing! We retained her services in early January and our baby was born in June! I know this isn't always the case and Megan did a great job of setting expectations so we were VERY surprised when the match occurred. I'm still suffering from a major case of baby brain + lack of sleep but a couple things I wanted to highlight about Megan and her team: 1. Unlike the bigger agencies, Megan only works with a small number of couples. After feeling like just a number in the revolving door of UCSF fertility we knew We wouldn't feel that way with Megan. And we never did. Best example: she gives you monthly updates as to whether you were presented or not. With the bigger agencies you get radio silence for months until the match occurs. Megan's very communicative. She always answered our (many) questions in a timely manner and often anticipated them before we had to ask! 2. After our consult...actually, after our initial phone call, we knew Megan was for us. She's got the perfect blend of kind/compassionate and matter of fact/direct. No BS with Megan. 3. Megan has the unique experience of being a birth mother herself. This means she's got a truly deep understanding of what a birth mother is going through and makes sure she is treated with the utmost respect and compassion. 4. Our adoption was out of state, but Megan found us a lawyer in that state (required for out of state adoptions) and stepped in whenever we had questions so we always felt supported even when we legally had to work with someone else. I could never express the amount of gratitude I feel for Megan and her team through a Yelp post... but I will try. My husband and I struggled with infertility for about 13 years. So you know you want to adopt, now what do you do? This is the question my husband and I asked ourselves 3 1/2 years ago. We spoke with a friend who had adopted through IAC, and so we decided to go with them. They are a large agency who has hundreds of adoptive parents. They function like a dating site - your profile is online and birthmothers are free to contact you directly. We, like many others who were with IAC, had the "pleasure" of enduring a failed adoption of a little boy in LA. We spent 8 days there for his birth, with little support from the young staff at IAC. On the last day the birthparents said they had decided to keep the baby and we left. It was a terrible, terrible roller coaster that left us devastated. This particular family was not ready to give up their baby for adoption, and we were not their destined adoptive family. This is NOT what happens at Family Formation. Adopting through Family Formation is like working with a fabulously experienced matchmaker. Megan and her team will find you YOUR baby, and will thoroughly talk with, guide and counsel birthmothers before introducing you to them. This ensures the best chance of success, because you are presented with a birthmother who knows adoption is the right choice for them and their baby. They are not simply exploring the idea, and taking you along for the emotional roller coaster ride with them - which is what happens often with large agencies. Once you are matched and the baby has been born and is gently cooing in your home, Megan and Family Formation will also play another important role - counseling and supporting the birthmother, who has just experienced a tremendous loss. As an adoptive mother, this has perhaps been the hardest part for me - knowing how much the birthmother suffers over her decision. Adopting our youngest son was a whirlwind. In four months we went from being parents of two with no expectation of having any more children in the near future, to parents of three with a newborn in our arms. The impression we had was that they are a great agency with very friendly, supportive and professional staff. It seemed to us that they take on only a small amount of participants in order to give them individualized guidance, which is nice. As well we would have wished at times more transparency on the program and its participants, especially before signing up. From our very first phone call with Megan, it was clear to my husband and me that adoption law is not Megan's job, it is her passion. We spent a good amount of time researching our options once we made the decision to grow our family through adoption and even met with another adoption lawyer. We knew that the adoption process was going to be a long, difficult journey, so it was important to work with a professional that was not only good at her job, but someone we liked as well. We chose to work with Megan for a few reasons: 1. She is very honest about her background and experiences, which led her to her passion. She is a birth mother. She not only knows the legal side, but understands the complete raw emotions that both the birth mothers and the adoptive parents are experiencing and is able to really relate to and empathize with the emotions we are all feeling. She also has an amazing way at calming an anxious, hopeful adoptive mother (that was me!). I know she is the same with the birth mothers. We were matched with two birth mothers through our process and they both consistently told us how much they trusted Megan and didn't hesitate to reach out to her before, during and after the birth. 2. She is honest about the process. She does not sugar coat the fact that there are no guarantees. At our first consultation, she explained that she has a high success rate with not only matching her clients with birth mothers, but also with those birth mothers actually going through with the adoption after giving birth, however there are no guarantees and it is a long, emotional process. We found it invaluable to work with someone who was able to manage expectations. 3. As stated in number 2, there are no guarantees. My husband and I are among the very few clients that experienced a failed adoption while working with Megan. It was devastating and heart breaking and it can happen no matter who you choose to work with. Megan stood with us throughout it and never allowed us to doubt ourselves. Honestly, we could tell very clearly that she was rather devastated by it too. She truly cares and wants what is best for the baby. She also started sending out our profile again right away so we were matched within 6 weeks of our failed adoption with the birth mother of our baby girl. 4. She spends the time working with the birth mothers before, during and after they choose a family. You won't necessarily know if you have been chosen because she continues to talk to the birth mother until she can be as sure as possible that it is a viable situation. Other lawyers and agencies will allow a birth mother to choose several families to interview before choosing one. However, Megan works with the birth mother in advance so we aren't going through the emotion of interviewing and wondering why we weren't chosen. 5. If your baby is born out of state, Megan will do the leg work to find excellent local counsel and will still work to guide you through the process. 6. Probably most important, Megan has an AMAZING team. It is a very small firm so you will get to know everyone, whether they are directly working with you or not. When you call the office, it won't matter who answers the phone, they will know who you are and will do their very best to help you. During the 11 months between signing our initial contract and bringing home our baby girl, we had the absolute pleasure to work with Maura, Caitlin, Dory and Natalie. Dory works on the surrogacy side, but on the few occasions that she was the only person in the office when I called with a question, she took the time to talk to me and try to find the answers to my questions. Maura is her paralegal/case manager who worked on our adoption and I just can't say enough. She is knowledgeable, compassionate, honest and just a joy to work with. Our family is now complete due to the team at Family Formation. We have our beautiful, precious baby girl and couldn't be more overjoyed. As I said above, although we were devastated at the failed adoption, we now know that we were meant to be the parents of our daughter. When I decided to become a surrogate I knew there were two ways I could do it - either with the help of an agency or without. I had met people online who had been surrogates without an agency, but that was too scary to me. I starting researching agencies that I had heard of and found out most of them were in Southern California or helping people in other countries - neither of which was appealing to me. Then I found out about Family Formation Law Offices. They are not an agency, but a law firm that does surrogacy and adoption, and they are practically in my backyard! On their website I saw that almost everyone in the office had a personal connection to the work they do (which I like a lot) so I decided to give them a call. BEST DECISION I COULD HAVE MADE!!! When I first called I got to talk to Dory, who not only runs the surrogacy program, but she has been a surrogate herself. She was so nice and made me feel comfortable right away. She listened to why I wanted to become a surrogate, answered all of my questions and even shared her own experience. By the time we hung I had a pretty good idea that this was the right place for me, but I needed to meet Dory in person before I could say for sure. The day of the meeting I was very nervous and had no idea what to expect. After all, I was going to a law firm which was very intimidating, but all of my nerves went away the minute I walked in the door. Instead of the formal waiting room I imagined, the reception area was loud and full of people. The whole staff was there including Dory and the three attorneys, Megan, Diane and Joanne, along with two new families - one from surrogacy and one from adoption. I must have looked really surprised because Dory just laughed and told me that when the new babies come in to visit everything else stops for a few minutes. It just felt like a happy place and that was when I knew for sure I wanted to be a surrogate in their program. After I was approved to be a surrogate, Dory set up a meeting with me and my intended parents (IP's) who live about an hour away. They are really great people who I liked very much and knew that I wanted to help. Luckily they felt the same way about me. We all knew the easy part was over and the process was going to involve a lot more details than we could imagine. There were going to be medical appointments, fertility drugs, contracts, bills to be paid, legal issues, etc. It was all overwhelming to think about and exactly why I was afraid to do this without the help of a program! In the beginning I called Dory several times a week. I'm sure I was a pest, but she never made me feel that way. If I had questions, was confused about something, or just wanted to talk, she was always there to listen and make me feel better. I have no idea how many times my IP's called her, but I know it was a lot, too. They have said the same thing about their phone calls with not only Dory, but everyone in the office. We all relied on them so much and they kept telling us not to worry and to just relax and enjoy the ride. About halfway through my pregnancy I realized I was much less nervous about everything and I was depending on Dory in a completely different way. I still called her often but I wasn't asking as many questions as I used to. I called her to tell her about my doctor appointments and how everything was going. Mostly I wanted to share my excitement with her because she had been there and really got it. My IP's said they were doing the same thing. She not only made it easy for us to forget the details we had worried about in the beginning but she had become a good friend to all of us. In fact, when it was close to my due date, we all "argued" over who was going to get to call Dory to tell her the baby was here. Lol. That was six months ago, I am no longer pregnant and my IP's have an adorable baby boy. I am very proud of what I did, but I know I couldn't have done it without the help of Dory and Family Formation Law Offices. I highly recommend Family Formation for surrogacy. When we have our next child, we will only work with this group. I have experience working closely with attorneys and was consistently impressed with Megan's professionalism, knowledge, and willingness to thoughtfully answer questions both after hours and on weekends. We waited almost 3 months to be matched with our surrogate (B.C.), but we expected to wait this long. After trying to have a baby for nearly 9 years, 3 months didn't seem such a long time to wait for someone so important. We didn't find it particularly encouraging that other agencies had surrogates who were waiting to be matched, and felt a little ripped off when we called an agency about a surrogate on their website who wasn't actually available (we found out she had been a surrogate with them years before but they just kept her photo up). Megan set our expectations and never misrepresented what her team could do for us. We also liked that their process of selecting surrogates is quite stringent. We felt we were in very good hands and that the firm attracted the type of surrogate we wanted to work with. Our success story had a lot to do with B.C.'s relationship with Family Formation and particularly her relationship with Dory. We felt the entire team treated B.C. with respect and compassion, especially through a failed transfer (which was hard on her because she'd only known success with getting pregnant!). Family Formation came highly recommended by our fertility doctor. We started with another one person show looking for a surrogate and it was not good. We feel lucky to have found FF and that we decided to work with them instead. When we met Megan and Dory they immediately put us at ease. She recommended a few attorneys for our surrogate to read over the contract, and I think they were great too because the contract part, which we thought would take weeks, actually went pretty fast and easy. I cannot recommend Megan and the Family Formation team enough! Megan helped us with all the legal aspects of our surrogacy journey: reviewing our contract with the egg donor agency, drafting the ovum donation contract, reviewing our contract with the surrogate agency, drafting the surrogate contact, and obtaining the parental court order. Megan was truly amazing throughout! Her prices are very reasonable (much cheaper than other attorneys we've talked to), but more importantly, we found Megan to be both sharp and knowledgable, and warm and patient. A truly rare combination. As we were new to the surrogacy process, my partner and I had a lot of questions (and I mean A LOT!!), and Megan always explained things patiently and addressed all our concerns. It was clear from day one that she was extremely knowledgable, and we quickly came to rely on her experience and advise. She never shied away from pointing out subtle points that have not yet been tested in court and made sure we understand exactly what we're committing to when signing the different contracts. She always followed up quickly and didn't let things drag on. When at some point we ran into issues with our surrogate, Megan provided great advise in how to handle the situation, and help us make sure things didn't escalate.
