There is no signage on the building there's no yard for any animals to play. it's a business office so I was a bit confused. I had to sit down and really do a lot of homework to figure out what was going on with this place. It is not a Humane Society so I think the title that they're using is misleading. Apparently it's a cat rescue not a Humane Society. i'm looking for a dog so I don't appreciate the misleading title. I have better things to do. Not cool.

It's been over a week since we adopted our new family member into our life. We couldn't be happier! The kitten (previously known as Katie Sowers in the Kitty Corner) was such an energy ball when we first encountered her. When we first arrived, I brought a friend along to the sight and we were greeted by the workers and immediately let in and informed about all the cats in the shelter. The employees took their time to explain each cat and helped interact with each cat to show their own personality and true colors. All the cats seemed vey wonderful and well taken care of. They asked an array of questions to help find a perfect companion for my adopted 3 year old cat. They led me to the Kitty corner where I fell in love with our new kitten. They answered all the questions I had and let me and my friend play with every cat until we were finally ready to adopt (which took about 3 hours to decide.) We were not rushed to leave and the workers seemed to enjoy the company/play that we provided for the cats. I've been to many shelters in the past few months to find the perfect companion and the Contra Costa Humane Society provided the best friendly and kind-hearted atmosphere that I've had so far. All the employees treated us so well, as well as taking care of the cats. The employees even provided photos and videos to present us to show every quirk and playfulness of each cat that we could not witness at the small time we had. My friend and I had the best experience here and would definitely recommend others to come here as well if they are looking for a new life companion to have! We loved how the cats had free range of the rooms and we were able to see how they could adapt in environments and people. We wanted to say thank you so much to everyone working there and for helping us find our new family member!

Charlie - available for adoption as of 12/21/13

They are doing a great job if trying to save all the critters and supplying the public with low cost spay/neuter and vaccines.

Besides their expertise and efficiency, Dr. Bellmund and her team were kind and compassionate--just what I needed at a time when I was worried and concerned. All that and--the pricing is significantly lower than a recent estimate I received from a local private-practice veterinarian clinic. Buddy is now a happier cat.  I'm seeing a positive change in his personality.  Thank you, Joybound, for all you do for pets and pet parents.  I am grateful.

In our case, we have two kids, and really wanted to make sure the dog was a good match before we introduced them. That model isn't a great fit for shelters where they (understandably) want the whole family to meet the dog, and won't place a hold to let grownups prescreen first. Not so with Underdog! We completed our initial form, had an email exchange, and then a video call, just grownups. There was no rush, and absolutely no pressure - such a wonderful difference from what we'd experienced elsewhere. Once we felt like this was a good fit, we included the kids. Our foster was incredible. She was responsive, caring, kind, and compassionate, and it totally opened our eyes to how this process can go when it is handled so skillfully. Moreover, she gave us a fabulous download of information, all super actionable and helpful. We came home with healthy, realistic expectations, and tons of tools and resources to get us started. All this is to say, thanks to Underdog, we got connected with our pup - and our family is completely in love.

This place is absolutely unacceptable, and I regret ever trusting them with my dog…read more Even two years later, I still feel strongly enough to warn others. After I left an honest review about my experience, they responded by threatening to sue both me and a rescue I volunteered with at the time. That alone should raise serious concerns about how they handle accountability. I visited daily for the entire month my dog was there, so what I'm saying is based on what I personally saw over and over again--not a one-time impression. Their "training" methods included physically poking dogs in the side and neck. The dogs did not appear to be properly fed and did not have consistent access to water. Over that month, I watched dogs lose weight, become withdrawn, and show clear signs of stress and shutdown behavior. I also personally saw a dog who was extremely underweight, had visible sores, and smelled strongly of urine and feces, as if she had been left sitting in it. No dog should ever be in that condition--especially in a place people are paying to care for and train their animals. It honestly concerns me that they still have positive reviews, because in my experience, the longer a dog stays there, the more concerning the changes become. I'm posting this again now because someone I know recently considered bringing a foster dog there. I made it very clear that no dog in my care will ever go anywhere near this place. If you care about your dog, do your research, ask questions, and trust what you see. I would strongly urge anyone considering this facility to visit frequently and unannounced.

I drove up to Lafayette so excited and MaryAnn was so wonderful! She was so great and took her time answering all my questions. After deciding that I was ready to take her home, MaryAnn accompanied me to the pet store to make sure I got all of Lulu's food etc. and to top it off I got a discount at Pet Food Express! I took Lulu home and I was super excited. She was so sweet and full of energy and did not want to leave my sight. She had separation anxiety & leash aggression that I got very overwhelmed. I was so overwhelmed that I called MaryAnn crying asking if I can give her back because I felt I couldn't give Lulu what she wanted me too. She was so understanding and she advised me to give Lulu another chance and this was all so new to Lulu and she was just as scared as I was. So I listened to MaryAnn's advise and I gave that precious little dog another chance. One year later I'm the most happiest person ever. She is the best little thing that could have happened to me. We go on runs together, many many walks, does well with other dogs. Lulu also gets to come to work with me and she's one of the most friendliest dogs in our office. She loves people and people adore her. I couldn't of done it without MaryAnn's help. Thank you so much MarryAnn! I can't believe it's almost been a year!
