I cannot believe it was just last month that I was on my way to meet my beautiful little Opal. My experience with this location was something to remember for all time. Not only was the staff incredible, they truly love what they do. Opal has a mild case of CH and I currently have a little with a severe case. And I have a soft spot for giving these beautiful souls a happy home. From the phone call to even just arriving to the parking lot for directions I was definitely delighted to see friendly faces from the staff. The volunteers were so incredible, they were nothing but transparent and loving to all the littles in the venue I felt bad that I wanted to adopt when they have such great people. I think whoever is looking for a new addition should really consider adopting here. Every little is treated so incredibly well. read more

I was looking for a kitten online as one has recently adopted me and needed an indoor playmate - and I read the reviews so I was a little apprehensive. but truly I have to give them the highest stars- there were comments like it did not smell good, the hours were challenging etc. But I have worked in easily 20 shelters in the bay area- when you keep a number of kittens in a small room- well, it can smell like a number of kittens in a small room- the box was clean the care was great (as an architect, I can admit that a vent in each room might suit) but overall I found it way more clean and cared for than any shelter I have fostered through or worked in. there were other comments which amounted to taking their work seriously and turning some away perhaps. but there again, I ask you to consider- it is a volunteer organization with very devoted people giving their time. At least when I was there, all the kittens had come from fosters so they were readily more socialized and outgoing than any barrage of kittens one sees at overloaded shelters. and if they put you through the paces to adopt a cat- just consider that anyone who has seen as many cute kittens adopted and later returned at a much less adoptable older rate- I thought their care and questions were warranted. But overall I would say- if you are looking for a feline family member, I would absolutely go there. the hours are slim (their webpage could be a little clearer) but you will find a super well socialized feline companion where they know the name, the personality (feline-ality) , spayed or neutered and well cared for. I truly thought they were brilliant for a volunteer organization on a shoe-string budget. My new litte one is home now- made herself home within minutes...even won my 15 year old pup over- she sleeps with him. I think they are wonderful and I cannot thank them enough for their time and care. read more

CCHS has a high regard to patient care and rescues a lot pets that would be overlooked or euthanized and provides the best possible care for them. They really look out for their rescued animals and ensure forever homes are found. If you are looking for a reputable rescue, the humane society is where you need to go. read more

There were volunteers and bless their hearts for putting in the time. The place smelled really bad though. My experience there was one in which I wish upon no one. Fell in LOVE with two kitties but could not go home with them as one was supposed to see a Dr. the next morning due to a UTI. I was told I could pick them up the next day but then never heard from anyone until I missed an email suggesting that I take two kittens so that they had each other instead of an adult cat and a kitten. I was SO up for that and thought it was the better choice anyways. WELL, both cats were adopted by other people and when I found out, my heart literally sank! Suzanne, the manager there was just awful to us. I had sent my husband over there to see why no one was answering the phone (had been calling all day to see what the pick up time would be). In sending my husband over there for an update and receiving the devastating news that both cats were given away I must say I was taken back by the lack of empathy and the level of ugliness from the manager Suzanne. She said, "Well I did not know, no one told me what the plan was, and it is NOT my job to call you! The combo you chose did not make sense anyways. There are plenty of other cats! You must have the wrong number as my phone never rang!!" It was the most disorganized experience that one could have imagined and one that left me in tears. I went to Joybound later that day and adopted two beautiful kittens with the best customer service experience. It was so clean and smelled so lovely you would never know that there are a ton of babies that needed adopting so do your part when you can. :) read more

There is no signage on the building there's no yard for any animals to play. it's a business office so I was a bit confused. I had to sit down and really do a lot of homework to figure out what was going on with this place. It is not a Humane Society so I think the title that they're using is misleading. Apparently it's a cat rescue not a Humane Society. i'm looking for a dog so I don't appreciate the misleading title. I have better things to do. Not cool. read more

Our adoption experience was absolutely outstanding at the Contra Costa Humane Society's Kitty Corner. They were incredibly thorough with their questions - as they should be! - so as to determine whether my husband and I were good candidates for kitten parents. They insisted we get a pair that were already bonded and we're so grateful that they did. We are overjoyed with our shy little darlings and can't wait to get to know them more. They were both vaccinated, spayed, neutered and litter box trained from the get go! They were also so kind and thorough over the phone when we had questions post adoption. It's been over a week since we adopted our new family member into our life. We couldn't be happier! The kitten (previously known as Katie Sowers in the Kitty Corner) was such an energy ball when we first encountered her. When we first arrived, I brought a friend along to the sight and we were greeted by the workers and immediately let in and informed about all the cats in the shelter. The employees took their time to explain each cat and helped interact with each cat to show their own personality and true colors. All the cats seemed vey wonderful and well taken care of. They asked an array of questions to help find a perfect companion for my adopted 3 year old cat. They led me to the Kitty corner where I fell in love with our new kitten. They answered all the questions I had and let me and my friend play with every cat until we were finally ready to adopt (which took about 3 hours to decide.) We were not rushed to leave and the workers seemed to enjoy the company/play that we provided for the cats. I've been to many shelters in the past few months to find the perfect companion and the Contra Costa Humane Society provided the best friendly and kind-hearted atmosphere that I've had so far. All the employees treated us so well, as well as taking care of the cats. The employees even provided photos and videos to present us to show every quirk and playfulness of each cat that we could not witness at the small time we had. My friend and I had the best experience here and would definitely recommend others to come here as well if they are looking for a new life companion to have! We loved how the cats had free range of the rooms and we were able to see how they could adapt in environments and people. I finalized my adoption today and I couldn't be happier! Suzanne was so kind and made the adoption process go by smoothly. Prior to the adoption I've been here a couple of times to visit the Kitty Corner to interact with the cats and all the staff are so friendly and helpful! I think the CC Humane Society is such a wonderful place that provides excellent care for all their animals in there care. I signed up to foster and also submitted a form to adopt. I haven't heard back from either of these inquiries, and I can't imagine how a place like this is successful in saving animal lives without any response to the public trying to help. I ended up going elsewhere to adopt. I've also been to the shelter, and it's not very well maintained. read more

I love animals especially the kitty cats. If I could have a house full I would! The next best thing was to volunteer. About a year ago I looked up the Humane Society's website. There are many volunteers options from clerical help to animal photograph to the AniMeals pet food bank to being a foster home provider. I chose the Humane Society as they get all their animals from the Martinez County Shelter so all the kitties I get to love on have been given a second chance. Same thing with the pooches! As I scrolled the volunteer options I came across Kitty Corner, which was right up my alley. An office space filled with cats??? Yes, please! I love my Saturday morning volunteer time. There is always a rotating cast of kitty characters that come through the door. I do get attached to the cats and miss them when they get adopted, but I take comfort in knowing that the awesome adoption counselors have placed them in a good home. The gals that run office are awesome and always keep the volunteers well informed. They also make sure all the dogs and cats are very well taken care of. I love these guys so much. Everyone I've encountered there is wonderful. They run a terrific adoption program, and care so much about and for the animals. I've adopted two animals (eight years or so apart) from them, and they were incredibly helpful and caring throughout the process! I'm a little puzzled by the negative reviews, but I guess people have their own issues, and I think in some cases are confusing them with Animal Services (which they are not). read more

I cannot believe how poorly we were treated when we adopted Teddy. We were not told that he needed dental work in the amount of $1,785. Nor were we told that he had a rabie shot. The sheet titled Complete medical history which was given to us is blank. Not only that, emails and phone calls are not answered. As seniors we adopted a senior dog and the cost of his dental work is a sacrifice for us to pay. But we love Teddy and he is part of our family. He is a joy. This was not a good experience for us and hopefully others won't have the same problems. read more

I was under the impression that they would have dogs here also. Unfortunately they only have cats. They do have photos of dogs and will arrange for a "meet and greet" with the dogs they have photos of since they're all in foster homes currently which is better for the dog, but less convenient for a person looking to meet a few dogs and see if one wants to go home with them. If you're interested in a cat though, they have a nice facility and the cats seemed personable. read more

I'm still bothered by the treatment I received from this organization years ago. They seem to operate with suspect ethics in their dealings with people. Ultimately they do not serve the animals they are ostensibly working for by having poor interactions with the public. I wish that the people supporting this organization and giving them donations do better job vetting the staff that works there. I have been looking for kittens because my cat had passed away a few months ago. I have been here three times now the first time there were no kittens. The second time i came in i saw the cutest kitten that i just loved! I asked the volunteer if i could adopt it along with another one. She went to a board where they had pictures of the cats. She told me i couldn't adopt the kitten because it had been fostered in another home with another cat for a week and they had "bonded" if i wanted one of the cats i had to adopt both from that board. They weren't from the same litter and all of the cats were playing together. The third time i came they told me i couldn't view any of the cats because there adoption hours had closed at 3 on a Friday. This place has to be the worst place to adopt a cat i have never dealt with such odd people. I am extremely disappointed. I highly recommend adopting a animal from another adoption shelter. Yelp is requiring me to give a star to share this review i honestly believe they deserve none. read more

This is my first review for my new home, but I was prompted to write it because I hear the same issue right now that I called to report to the CCHS on 3 separate dates in late January/early February. The apartment complex in which I now reside (I was only visiting then), has an apartment with two dogs that they keep on the balcony all night, even when the temperature has reached into the 40s. This same apartment has had a dog taken away for biting a child. I called CCHS those three times out of concern for the crying dogs in those freezing temperatures and I never received a single call. If you can't handle the situation then you should at least provide a referral. It is unconscionable that your mission statement states that you "work to reduce suffering" but can't respond to 3 different phone calls about dogs being left out in freezing temperatures. Is it because I placed the call from the poorer part of town? read more
