This is one of my favorite thrift store chains. I went in on a Sunday and missed the 50% off everything sale. A woman was nice enough to give me her receipt so that I could get 50% off everything Sunday too! The store has so many good things for men, women, and kids. They have great deals on a lot of things but they kind of forget they got these items donated because I saw an item with an $180 price tag. Anyway, I love coming here to stock up on work clothes. I love this thrift store! They sell CDS and all other types of things. They are very organized and have different deals. All the staff is sweet and kind! If you are paying with card, you need to carry your id (kinda cool in case of someone steals your card). read more

Overall things are sorted very nicely. You can easily get a gift for anyone in your family, or yourself. They have a couple different colors of the week that are 50% off. The store is big, and the aisles are also spaced out nicely. Many items in here are very overpriced, especially for a thrift store where everything was donated. Another customer and I were discussing that a jacket was marked for $80. I also saw several purses that were $25 and up. I think they can definitely make their prices a lot more reasonable. Prices are ridiculously high! This is a second hand store not Neiman Marcus. I did see some cute des designer shoes. However they were priced so high for being used and beat up. Lower your prices! Most people are purchasing items for themselves or family members not for resale. And most of these people that shop there live in the community which is a blue-collar community. Nobody in this area is wealthy and your prices reflect that. The cashiers didn't even speak English. Luckily for me I'm bilingual. However, the two ladies behind me were not. read more

This store is a total rip off! Everything is WAY WAY OVERPRICED. Sign says clothing and shoes 50% off but then you get to the register and they tell you NO, only certain items marked with certain letters. TOTAL SCAM! The owners should be ashamed of themselves. Hubby and I originally intended to pay a visit to the Unique Thrift Store in Washington Heights located in the far south side of Chicago, but the store appeared to be closed permanently. Well, since I dragged him along for some thrift shopping in the south side, let's complete the journey with other thrift stores we haven't hit. The Family Thrift Store in West Lawn was one of the target locations. As I've mentioned before in my reviews on their sister locations (Logan Square and Little Village), this chain has good selections on apparel. The clothing departments for both men and women were fairly organized, yet they ran out of the gas on cleaning up the back of the store. Be aware of the children's toy department; kids were treating it as their playground. I guess that the entire department turned into a "Chuck e Cheese's," without serving pizza and pops onsite. Overall, thrifting does require lots of patience, perseverance, and time. It sounds like thrifters are solider-in-training. Growing up in a military family, I have what it takes to survive in thrifting shopping. In the ends, we scored a pirate scarf/bandana and a Chicago Cubs jersey, all for $6 and some change. Hubby was lucky that he picked an item that was qualified for half-off since it was a pink-tag item (today the blue-tag and pink-tag clothing and shoes were half-off). The cashier kindly informed us that on Saturday, March 28th., the entire store will be half-off. Fortunately I work most Saturdays, otherwise I can go crazy with thrift shopping. They do accept most major credit cards, but it's easier to complete all transactions with cash at thrift stores. You really don't need a lot on hand though! read more

Most of these reviews are old but I do agree that some of the items are over priced but not as bad as it was so perhaps as a concerned business owner they read the reviews as the prices didn't seem as bad when I visited in July, 2024. I was there a year ago where a pair of gym shoes was way over priced probably just because they were Nike's. But the shoes is one thing that should never be overpriced as many times shoes from thrift shops are dry rotted but you can't always tell when they are in good condition & obviously they won't take them back & unless you wear that particular pair of shoes often, you may not discover they're dry rotted until worn several times months later. I do agree with one poster who said prices are over all too high for a blue collar neighborhood but again, prices over all didn't seem bad this time. I don't agree with the poster when they listed brands like Talbots & Old Navy inferior brands. Old Navy is inferior to The Gap & especially Talbots but I've never had these brands fall apart in the wash as she indicated. There was a time Old Navy sold real leather flip flops & they were smart looking & lasted forever but stock in just about any retail store is very limited in this day & age & very little is made as it was back in the day. The poster also mentioned made in China with the clothing but most clothing is foreign made not just from China but other foreign Countries & it's very difficult to find brands all made in the USA. Even Nike athletic shoes are made in Indonesia. And Columbia sportswear which has always been a good brand is made in Vietnam. The USA sold out to that a long time ago so the poster is wrong about finding all this clothing made in the USA elsewhere. You can't even find good cotton white socks anymore as there's too much inferior textiles in them like polyester for many years now. Foot Locker was the last store to sell practically 100% white cotton socks but not anymore! And it it nice they have fitting rooms as most thrift stores do not but I don't agree the fitting rooms are the reason you pay more here as yet another poster had said. But over all, I've found many reasonably priced items here & I will be back. Now your receipt from during the week is good for 50% off on both Saturday & Sunday so it doesn't look like that would be the case for everyone unless they had a receipt. read more

Horrendous is an understatement. This Family Thrift is located in an extremely blue collar, lower socio-economic part of the city. The owners buy large pallets of clothes, probably get a pallet of 1000 plus pieces of clothing for $1,000.00 to $2,000.00. They also solicit clothing donations from churches and community centers in rich suburban areas like Lake Forest, Winnetka, Glencoe, etc. So the owners obtain a small part of their clothing merchandise at rock bottom prices, but the remainder they get is from donations. Yet they have the utter audacity to price OLD, USED athletic wear between $11.91 up to $19.99. Let me repeat, OLD, USED athletic wear that has been worn by someone who has worked out in them and sweated profusely. I don't care who the manufacturer of these athletic clothing items are, or if they were made with spun gold, the bottom line is that these are OLD, USED, SWEATED-IN athletic wear items that they got FOR FREE as a result of their solicitations for donations to churches in super rich suburbs or from their purchase of large pallets that they paid a song and a dance for. Again, let me repeat, the location of this family thrift is in an EXTREMELY IMPOVERISHED AREA where the median income is $35,000.00 on a good day. 99.9% of the people who shop in here are in here because they are economically disadvantaged and can't afford to shop at regular retail stores. To charge these kind of prices in this neighborhood is despicable and shameful. They see a Lululemon logo and then they see dollar bill signs. They just need to put their coveted clothes on Ebay themselves if they are concerned about people who are resellers making money off of them. It wasn't just the athletic wear that was astronomically priced. There were a pair of non-descript leather shoes WITHOUT SHOE LACES that were all smudged and stained marked at $120.00. Even at half off $60.00 is appalling for a thrift store. And even at half off $10.50 for USED, SWEATED-IN athletic wear? And if the price-gouging wasn't enough, the store was a MESS. Totally disorganized, women's blouses, tops, etc. mixed in with children's clothing, winter coats mixed in with shorts, carts up front by the cash wrap overflowing with high-priced plastic bags filled with garbage lotions, soaps, used hair brushes, etc. marked ridiculously high, $5.91, $6.92, etc. It's a vicious cycle for them, basically it's messy because they have TOO MUCH MERCHANDISE, and they have no where to put it, so it's jammed all over the place, and the reason for the mess is because no one is buying the stuff because its priced too high. And aside from their coveted USED, SWEATED-IN Lululemon athletic wear, the rest of the clothing items are generic garbage, Old Navy, Talbot's, Gap, J. Crew on a good day, and a lot of cheap, made in China crap that rips apart after one washing, that further adds to the cluttered mess because they are also putting ridiculous prices on this garbage so no one is buying it. Some of the same merchandise has been sitting there for months. This particular Family Thrift is huge, it's about 10,000 to 15,000 square feet. I was in there on a Saturday. I literally was the only person in the store in a Saturday. And quite telling that there was only one employee in the ENTIRE STORE on a Saturday. The owners, who are from Houston, Texas, do not own the store front, which is a former Dominick's, They rent it. Even though this thrift store is located in an impoverished area of the city, the owners have to be paying a minimum of $6,500.00 to $10,000.00 a month for rent, plus liability insurance, which is at least $1,500.00 monthly. Then they still have to pay whatever minimum wage salary to their employees. No one, not even resellers, are paying their horrifically high prices. That is clear based on the fact that not one person (besides myself) was in there shopping on a Saturday. Can't see how the owners are even breaking even after they pay rent, insurance, and their employees' wages. Why these owners are continuing to stick it out in this impoverished neighborhood and charging these prices for this crap that clearly no one is buying is mind-boggling. Bottom line the pricing here is shameful. If the owners were smart they would just shut down and take their over-priced crap back to Texas with them. read more

Like most city thrift stores, some departments here are perpetually wiped out. But clothes they have, and separated they are! If you don't know the layout it can seem confusing for the ladies at first, but they are s-m to the right, lg+ to the left. And then divided in to categories, and then divided in to colors! And then there are multiple dressing rooms, with seats, and hanger hooks, and mirrors! This is why you pay more. I've had extraordinary luck over the years finding everything i ever came in looking for, and of course many things i wasn't. A pair of vintage Miley Cyrus blunt rolling, i mean lap study boards come immediately to mind... I've had particular luck with lamps and earrings, here, too. Of course they have the obligatory sales color tags, and when you do buy, your receipt is always good for for 10 or 20% off the following sunday. They regularly have special sales when Everything is 50% off. Their firm stance on not allowing other people's adorable children to run freely through the store combined with better than average music always makes for a calm peaceful atmosphere, a veritable oasis of thrift. read more

One of my faves in the city. Of course, I'm always on the hunt for designer finds and this store had a few names to brag about. Found a few pairs of Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman pumps. Plethora of a coach bags behind the counter, as always. Went during the day on a weekday and basically had the store to myself the entire time. Clothing, handbags and shoes were stocked to the hilt AFTER the big Labor Day sale, which says a lot. Overall, will definitely go here before Salvation Army in the area. read more

Recently move to this area and found this Thrift Store and i got to say im in love and soo adicted to it. The store is clean, its organize, friendly personal, and the best they have a lot of good brands and in a decent price lets be honest retail prices are crazy and here i always find something awsome. read more
