Hubby and I originally intended to pay a visit to the Unique Thrift Store in Washington Heights located in the far south side of Chicago, but the store appeared to be closed permanently. Well, since I dragged him along for some thrift shopping in the south side, let's complete the journey with other thrift stores we haven't hit. The Family Thrift Store in West Lawn was one of the target locations. As I've mentioned before in my reviews on their sister locations (Logan Square and Little Village), this chain has good selections on apparel. The clothing departments for both men and women were fairly organized, yet they ran out of the gas on cleaning up the back of the store. Be aware of the children's toy department; kids were treating it as their playground. I guess that the entire department turned into a "Chuck e Cheese's," without serving pizza and pops onsite. Overall, thrifting does require lots of patience, perseverance, and time. It sounds like thrifters are solider-in-training. Growing up in a military family, I have what it takes to survive in thrifting shopping. In the ends, we scored a pirate scarf/bandana and a Chicago Cubs jersey, all for $6 and some change. Hubby was lucky that he picked an item that was qualified for half-off since it was a pink-tag item (today the blue-tag and pink-tag clothing and shoes were half-off). The cashier kindly informed us that on Saturday, March 28th., the entire store will be half-off. Fortunately I work most Saturdays, otherwise I can go crazy with thrift shopping. They do accept most major credit cards, but it's easier to complete all transactions with cash at thrift stores. You really don't need a lot on hand though!

Great things!! Great Price!! Great deals!!!check this out!!

They simply do not understand what merchandise they receive as far as donations and therefor they do not price things properly.

I don't agree with the poster when they listed brands like Talbots & Old Navy inferior brands.

I like to patronize local businesses. Esp, Salvation Army and Goodwill. The cashier who I can only identify as the only African American cashier on staff during my visit, no name tag visible. The rest were hispanic men and women. I was in line, the woman in front of me from what I gathered did not have enough money for her tab and it had to be cancelled by another associate. To which said associate had to make some ignorant comments about. So I made sure to step back cause she appeared to be in a huff about it. She and the other worker walked away after this, neither saying "we'll be back to cash you out", nothing. But that's fine, I can wait. So the cashier comes back and she's talking to another customer and is ready to take care of her. Which was nice but I am next in line. I was standing right there. My items on the counter. So I slide over directly in front of her and she says nothing to me, but makes sure to roll her eyes and suck her teeth at me. All the while, looking at the other customer, as though to suggest the audacity I have of cutting in front of her. So with that attitude not needed. I gave her back the items and said "you can take this back and you can keep your attitude. I did not come in here for this." Sadly, I let her get the best of me in that moment in front of my children. There are a lot of nice things in the store and priced reasonably. But I will not go back in there if I see her. The other workers there were really nice. It was my first time there but she ruined this experience. Maybe she should work in back where she doesn't have to interact with the customers with that attitude.

Mind you the store is literally small my partner and I grabbed 2 items i put one back and we were about to pay for 1 item. I had my service dog with me and got told to put him in a cart. To get approached by the another cashier with attitude demanding my service dogs papers. I was taking him out the cart already and leaving while my partner was about pay. DO NOT SHOP HERE!!! These people are miserable.

On my recent day off I stopped in and it looks like the hours were corrected, which is great because it made the visit possible. Walking in, I was honestly a bit amazed at the variety of items they have available. There's a pretty wide selection of household goods, décor, furniture pieces, and building materials. If you enjoy browsing or treasure-hunting for unique items, there's definitely a lot to look through here. That said, one thing that confused me was that several items displayed on the floor appeared not to be for sale. The main reason I came in was because I saw boxed plastic hedges displayed in the windows and thought they would be perfect for a project I'm working on. Unfortunately, those particular items weren't actually available for purchase. Still, the store does carry many interesting pieces, and if you're willing to browse you might find something great. It's definitely worth stopping in if you're working on a home project, decorating, or just like searching for unexpected finds. Overall, a good spot with plenty of items -- just be aware that some display pieces might not actually be for sale.

It seems they don't understand the market of re-sale or thrifting particularly given online options like Facebook Marketplace. I've been here 4x and each time most customers walk in and walk out with nothing. The original grocery store is a better business for the community.
