The Economy Shop is literally a Victorian style house with every room crammed with secondhand goods and antiques. They're only open 3-4 days a month from 9am-3pm, so you need to plan your visit. When you enter, you're handed a paper sheet that is divided into different categories of merchandise. When you go to each room, they total up whatever you want to buy from that given room. When you're completely done shopping, you pay at the far back of the house and exit. Prices are fair and you can find some great stuff here. The basement was one area that was overwhelming. Almost too much to look at and fully absorb. Tips for first time visitors: 1. Bring reusable bags or a tote bag. They will give you bags but a good sturdy bag will work to your advantage. 2. Parking is tricky. You're fine on residential streets but if you park along the train tracks, you have to feed a meter. $2.00 per hour. Card payment only. 3. Leave small kids at home. The rooms and hallways are too packed and tight to reasonably manage kids in tow. I like this place! I will be back!

I do love a good garage sale, and my kid loves shopping in vintage stores, so today we found…read moreourselves at Forest Park Emporium after our planned ice cream outing at the Brown Cow ice cream parlor, next door, ended too quickly. Sadly, the Brown Cow is closed for construction, so we missed out. We had already found parking, so instead of buying ice cream, we went treasure hunting next door. We had a lot of fun moving from one vendor area to the next as we worked our way around the store. It is very, very full of merchandise, but didn't feel super cramped. It would be harder to navigate if you are a larger size or if you need a walker or wheel chair. The aisles and vendor set-ups are narrow, so it does take some patience and balance to maneuver in and around. But everything is clean and well organized, so big plus there. And there is a massive amount of unique things. Smelled fine, too, not stuffy or smoky. The owner was walking around with a spray bottle, tidying up. Owners and customers all wore masks. 6-foot distancing marks are on the floor and additional signs are all around the shop, reminding shoppers about COVID precautions, which was appreciated. I think this would be a fun place to go on a masked, socially-distanced date! Ice cream + treasure hunting.

The guy with the glasses -- the one *everybody* complains about -- had apparently locked the door while he was on his lunch break, which would be no big deal except ALL the signs said "open" and it was well within normal operating hours. So we knocked a couple of times, because we'd made a special trip to the shop, and the guy finally came to the door and tried yelling at us through it but we couldn't understand him. So he opened the door and yelled: "I'm on my lunch break. I have two minutes left. I'll be back to open the door when my break is over." And he slammed the door. So ... yeah, never again.

Some of their stock was pricey, but there's enough in there to almost guarantee shoppers will walk out with a treasure or two. I loved that their $1 tag clothing items were separate. This made bargain-hunting so much easier. While not a large space, it's worth a stop. Best part is that 96 cents of every dollar is allocated to providing HIV services locally and globally. That's so rad and makes spending money there feel great.

The store is great for jeans and other types of pants: I found plenty in my size (29), and several beautiful skirts (M). I also snagged a beautiful Boden velvet dress for $19 that I would not have otherwise been able to afford. Most of the clothes here are from stores like Akira, Levi's and American Eagle, with a few nicer brands like Express, Boden, and Eileen Fisher. Some of the items are from lower rung brands like Forever 21. The shoes (very limited collection) are mostly mid-range, such as Nike and Adidas, though here too there are some nicer brands. There is also a separate rack for designer clothing. As far as I've observed, women's sizes mostly range from 0-20, though most clothes are between 4-14. The men's section is definitely much less extensive, but here too they have plenty of jeans and other bottoms. The shop is located in a university neighbourhood, which evidently influences the kind of items they receive. There are also two fitting rooms, which is something I always appreciate in a thrift store. The store also has books, CDs, DVDs, and home goods. I did not buy any of these because my cabinets and bookshelves are already overflowing. The store is very conveniently located, with a bus stop right in front of it, and is about a ten minute walk to the Metra station. This thrift store definitely fills a niche in the neighbourhood: Gilda's is another thrift store in Hyde Park, but has higher end items that are slightly pricier than those at Out of the Closet. Overall, I will be definitely be back, and highly recommend this place if you're in the neighbourhood and enjoy thrifting!

I rung the doorbell and a grumpy old man with glasses came to door. No hello, no verbiage. Either he has a vocal problem or didn't want to be bothered I couldn't figure it out. He reached for a bag I placed on the ground and took it inside. He came back and thought I was going to hand him the 2nd bag which I placed it on the ground for him. A short older guy came to assist and he took the luggage and 3rd bag. He told me to have a nice day but I requested a receipt. The grump man gave it to me. The shorter guy thanked me for the donation. I know these guys volunteer their time. I just can't deal with with rudeness at any age.

I wish they had more hours. But what they have offers enough time for me to shop there. Such a pleasant shopping experience! My Husband luvs the store too & trust me he is not into shopping. We both had a great time! The store is super neat & the prices are low to very fair. Push baskets to shop with. Enough room to browse around. Round racks for clothing so you don't have to be in a narrow isle & in someone's way. Dressing rooms if you need them. The clothes & other items are very nice. Not junk as other stores try to sell & for high prices. The prices are good & reasonable. I go for clothes & more. But they do have a very nice selection of furniture, dishes & house items, toys, shoes, nice coats & much more. This was my first time shopping at this wonderful store. I plan to go back as much as I can. I was lucky to be there when all blue tickets of clothes were only $1! Yes, $1!. You can't even buy anything at a $1 Tree store for $1 anymore! Some things are a bit pricey but not bad at all! I love shopping at store like this. Many people donate nice clothes etc. Also I luv finding different kinds of jackets, coats, tops & more that you do not see in chain stores. The staff is very friendly greeting waiting to get in customers with a cheerful "Good Morning" & so pleasant to deal with. For the holidays I see the store has extended hours. The down side is the regular hours are only 3 weekdays open from 10 am till 4 pm. But I will take it. I am retired so very lucky I can shop here & it is not super far for us to drive to. There is a huge parking lot in the back as well. I can't wait to shop here again. For some time I was shopping at another thrift store & 1 of the volunteers was so unpleasant & mean to me. So, It looks like they lost alot of my business. This is another reason I am so happy Gerry & I finally tried this store. We always drive by it & now we can shop here & find some nice things. A very cheerful & pleasant shopping experience for sure.
