I love this nursery. It has so many plants and the variety is great. It is calming and I can't wait to come here in the fall. I got a drink at the coffee shop and was able to walk around and look at all the plants. We ended up getting a beautiful plant and pot for my daughter who just lost her cat. The staff was very helpful for us as we were looking for the best plant to get her. The plants were very strong and were very awesome. We also got a beautiful hummingbird feeder that is amazing. Easily the best nursery and garden store in the Shawnee/west JoCo area. If you want any kind of greenery ranging from vegetables to ornamentals to shrubbery, then this is the place for you. It also helps that there are approximately 160 million people working there on a given weekend, especially during planting season. Very helpful staff, an amazing array of flowering plants, as well as succulents and indoor selections. Pricing is fair and you can be sure that what you're getting has been well tended to, so even a fumbling green thumb like me isn't likely to kill it. Note that parking can be a challenge, but find a space and take in the peaceful atmosphere in the greenhouse. If you have the time, then check out the Koi pond in the far backspace of the perennial garden. Amazingly tranquil, these graceful carp seem to make everything OK. read more

This place is wonderful and fun. The help here is all very knowledgeable. And so helpful. I wanted to point out that today I had a young lady, AndreyAnn helping me. she was so personable. She only works on Monday, Wednesday's and Fridays. However I have always had great people helping me and unfortunately did not get their names. I recommend all of them! This place has hundreds of beautiful plants for inside and outside. Trees, bushes, everything you can think of and they have seems like a couple of areas coffee bar and people can go in there and socialize or work on their laptops. Nurseries always charm me and have a soft spot on my heart. Family tree nursery reminds me of a small version of Merrifield Garden Center in Northern VA! This place is so organized, clean and inviting. Dedicated sections inside and out: annuals, herbs/vegetables, Halloween decor by entrance, firewood/soil by the right side of the building to accommodate easy loading of big items. I didn't venture inside and walk the aisles so that will be reserved for a later visit. While I didn't help I was a few feet by the guest services and I overheard the staff being very helpful to other customers. I wanted to buy everything here! More than a nursery with the cutest merchandise on the inside. They also have a coffee shop with an indoor/outdoor seating area so perfect for nice spring days. They have a fish pellet dispenser. There's a cafe attached with outdoor and indoor seating. It's warm outside but there are mist devices and fans. It is pretty quiet. It closes at 5 though. This place is amazing! FPO and I were continuing our 4-day weekend It's Spring celebration and stopped by Family Tree Nursery. Two big lots with loads of parking are separated by the entrance road/street/drive (?). Stretched across the entire length of the property are open air sections, a greenhouse, and a covered store area that includes a cafe. Everywhere you look there are trees, plants, flowers, herbs, pots, soil, succulents, air plants, bonsai, terrariums, and I could go on and on and on. I saw a rain chain, actually I saw several different ones (they were all pretty) and until today I never realized that I absolutely need one. I'm not sure how I lasted this long without one. Just kidding, I didn't buy a rain chain (maybe next time) but I did get a Kalamansi tree and two Citronella plants. Also picked up a bunch of complimentary books to help us learn about the grass and plants in the Midwest. The people here are all super friendly and very helpful. This is a great place for any gardening expert or novice. I will absolutely come back. read more

I love this location of Family Tree! It was large and the selection of plants was truly phenomenal! When you walk in, you are surrounded by outdoor plants and then the indoor gift shop. It is a beautiful entrance and all the goodies inside are just as intriguing as the botanicals. They have local produce, local products, and some cool Knick knacks. Truly an amazing place to splurge on yourself or find a gift for a plant obsessed friend! I truly enjoyed that the plant selection was quite large, and had variations of sizes for different price points. This is a great plant store for someone wanting to start a collection and improve their green thumb. The service is always phenomenal at both the cafe and on the service floor. Staff is knowledgeable and extremely helpful. They can even repot your plants for you, and drill drainage holes in your pots. My daughter and I went to Family Tree in Shawnee today looking for an evergreen tree. We spoke with a lovely female employee who was very knowledgeable and kind. it was very windy today and my daughter had picked up a couple trees that had blown over. When we purchased our monstera, one of the employees heard me saying I would have to look stuff up since I have never had one before, and he ran over to give me a pamphlet. This place is great. Originally lured in by the great coffee from Cafe Equinox (inside), I fell in love with the greenhouse cafe area during the winter, which finally led me to the nursery specifically for plants. Truly a sales funnel that I'm sure they had in mind when partnering up with Cafe Equinox! My wife has the green thumb in the family, and thanks to FTN's kid friendly little shovels and Paw Patrol gardening gloves, my daughter will soon be helping her out this spring. Together they picked spinach seeds, lettuce, planting trays, and other edible things to sprout up this year. The space is super easy to walk around and peruse, and really big. There's a flower-specific greenhouse, trees and shrubs, and the main greenhouse. *Note that the cafe portion is only open through the winter, and then more plants take the space over. Prices are pretty good, but it can also add up. That's the case with most places like this though. Fun spot that seems far away from me in Shawnee, but really isn't any more than the 15-20 minutes away that most things in this city are. I'd recommend spending an hour here some weekend for sure. read more

Holy cow. I have never seen such beautiful plants, ever. I visited Family Tree Nursery in Shawnee for their fall festival during an absolute deluge. And even with the pouring rain, the place was packed with shoppers. The plants, the flowers, the decor, everything is lovely and so well arranged. They also have a coffee shop and plenty of seating. I will admit, the cold brew was not good, to me. It was way too bright and slightly sour. The coffee notwithstanding, this is a great place to find all of your landscaping enhancements or houseplants to liven up your decor. It's not the cheapest source for garden materials, but the expertise cannot be denied. read more

My favorite place! I seriously love visiting and have never had a bad experience. The staff will go out of their way to give you the names of the plants you're taking home (Latin names!)... this way helps to do research and find out proper care, although they help with that as well. I can never leave empty handed, every plant I have purchased has been healthy and thriving. My living room has become a mini forest that makes me a proud customer. I had always gone to the Family Tree location in Liberty since it was closest to me. Then one year I branched out and went to the OP location to get my first fiddle fig tree. I FINALLY visited the Shawnee location and I'm pretty convinced it's my new favorite! It's a good 40 minute drive from me but it's well worth it. Guys. Hey, guys. Listen. The selection is insanity. They've got everything. And when I say "everything" I'm not even exaggerating. Plus the coffee shop is an added bonus if you're interested in plant watching, people watching or spending a lazy afternoon here. Such a peaceful and laid back atmosphere. I left with way more plants than I needed. But you know what? It's okay. Because I'm a proud plant mom these days. My actual children can sometimes argue and be obnoxious teenagers. The first warm day of the year always gets me itching to start planting. I try to follow that impulse, but that sometimes leaves me with dead plants on my hands, seeing as a spring freeze isn't uncommon. This will be the first year that I have a garden that isn't in Brooklyn, New York. I know, how crazy is it that I haven't yet had a garden while living in this most fertile region. Gardening is one of my passions. Don't get me wrong. I'm no expert. I had a wisteria vine that despite all my efforts only flowered once in the 7 or so years that I had it. But I enjoy the benefits of the planted seeds (er, I don't actually plant much from seeds, but you get the point). Nothing better than a dish made with tomatoes from a garden. I can't think of anything more pleasurable than sitting outside on a summer night breathing in the heady fragrance of jasmine and moon flowers. Yet the past two summers had me with only so much as a couple pots of flowers on the porch. The reason for this is we've moved right in the midst of summer two years in a row. But, this year is different! We moved in March and now there's a small garden out back that is just dying for some plants. Come hell or high water, I'm going to plant a garden that will rival my vine and flower-filled yard back in Brooklyn. I got a good start last week at Family Tree Nursery. It was 80 degrees on the first Saturday of April, so there I was, typically optimistic, filling the cart with herbs (basil, two varieties of thyme and sage), annuals (geraniums, petunias) and one grape vine that a most informative employee helped me to pick out. On that note, I was pretty happy to see the wide range of grape varieties at this nursery. At my favorite nursery on Long Island, they barely had one variety to offer and if you got there too late after it sold out, you were SOL. I ended up putting back all the annuals I had impulsively loaded my basket with after speaking to yet another helpful employee who suggested it might be too early to plant these in the ground (after I asked her). Fearing a kitchen full of plants waiting out the frost threat, I figured I can return next month to get these. After all, there's plenty of time and Family Tree has a lot to offer. And they will soon be getting in my favorites: clematis, jasmine and passion flowers. I will also get my tomato plants here when I return. Here's to a happy gardening season! read more

This place just gets more stars every year for me. I used to think of it as the place to go for my landscaping but it is so much more than that. Take a stroll outside for all of your landscaping needs but it is also peaceful and serene. Inside there are so many options from potting soil to wax melts. They also carry Mindfully Simple elderberry. I love that they focus on highlighting local companies like themselves. We have been coming here for years and it just gets better. Family Tree knows what needs to be done to stand the test of time and they do it right. They are very helpful as well. We have gone in with a bare front yard and they have helped us design and create a beautiful landscaped front yard. There are so many family events as well. I'm always up for a visit to family tree. Our whole family loves to come here. The kids always head straight for the koi pond that's tucked into the back corner of the shade garden. Bring quarters so you can buy a handful of fish food to feed the koi! After we've said hello to the fish we spend time just strolling around the store. There are so many fun and beautiful things to see. The employees are super laid back and helpful. Today we were looking for lavender to plant in our mosquito repellent garden and the lady that helped us went above and beyond with giving us helpful advice. It was great! They offer a lot of family friendly events throughout the year. Check their Facebook page or website to get the exact dates. Decided to come here during my lunch hour with a colleague and absolutely fell in love with this nursery. They have a wonderful coffee/tea cafe and lots of adorable sitting areas for you to soak in the atmosphere, study, draw or catch up with a friend!! Cafe Equinox is picking up a lot of praise as a delicious coffee/baked goods shop in a greenhouse and that's just as good as it gets. Family tree has everything you would ever need relating to gardening. My fave place for plants

My husband and I attended Family Tree's Spring Container Workshop at their Shawnee location yesterday, March 28th, 2021. A deposit of $5 each was required at the time of online registration. This would hold you a spot. The workshop was a DYI starting with a dirt-filled generic container and then filling it with selections of already priced-out flowers and fillers. The cost of the end product was $39.99 for everyone, so not exactly cheap. I can buy an already filled container for less than that and maybe even prettier! At checkout, I was both surprised and annoyed that the $5 paid to hold a spot was not deducted from the overall bill. I was told it was considered a "fee." I can understand that you'd lose your $5, if you didn't show up, but to add it to the already-priced workshop is a ripoff. My husband I will never attend again. read more
