First time for me at this location for their Spring Open House event, featuring European garden vignettes. Every employee I spoke with was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They had so many beautiful flowers and plants it made me wish a) I was a green thumb and b) I had a space to keep all of them in! My favorite display was Greece because I'd lived there a while ago, so it was fun to see their concept. That said, though, I loved all of the gardens. They were well planned and fun to take a quick stroll through/around. As to pricing, I labeled this as moderate, but really I think it just depends on what plant, planter, garden art, etc., you're looking for--the prices seem reasonable to me. One lady there suggested I subscribe to their newsletter to find out about upcoming events. Overall I like Family Tree Nursery. The parking lot at this location is a good size, you can enjoy a cup of coffee at Cafe Equinox, and their greenhouse is so fun to explore. This spot has decent square footage, maybe similar in scope or a bit bigger on the inside than the Joco Suburban. There is a good variety of succulents and indoor plants to add to your collection. For me, the greenhouse is the best part - it's huge, and I love seeing all of the cacti they have available. I sometimes notice some religious undertones where which feels odd, but everyone is nice and it's a fun spot to spend a dreary day when you need a pick me up. read more

So I came back. I was very close by, and needed a fire chief arborvitae to replace one in my yard which expired (I did end up finding a good looking one at Lowe's for $10 less than at Family Tree). I, without much hope for a different outcome, stood in line behind a woman just to see if the yellow tape bullsh*t was going to ruin my day. I am mostly an optimist, and I do like being proven wrong. No such luck. The customer in line ahead of me was allowed to leave with her purchase without tape being stuck on her merchandise. As soon as the (young man, Asian descent) cashier reached for the tape dispenser, I said, firmly, "please, don't." He replied ha had to. I replied that he did not. He lied to me to say I would be checked outside for the tape. Inside I became enraged, again... because he lied to me in order to humiliate me, for absolutely no reason. I called him out on his lie about outdoor monitors. There was a female calling herself a manager who did not stop smiling at my being annoyed and indignant. She told me that it 'depends'; whether the tape is used on a customer's purchase or not. I asked for her superior- a friendly appearing man named Dan, who asked me to follow him outdoors, outside the cashier area, to listen to my issue and get me away from the crazily smiling female manager who had also lied to me about the tape tagging protocol. Dan assured me the tape was supposed to be uniformly applied to EVERY purchase. He said nothing when I brought up the obvious- the tape was NEVER equally dispensed, I gave him multiple [the patron before me wasn't given tape/the cashier made up a rationale why the tape must be given/the female manager's explanation was in direct conflict with the policy he'd just repeated to me] reasons why the policy was discriminatory. He looked at me plain faced and told me there was no discriminatory intention in the policy. As I did before, I went to the returns counter, had my purchase refunded- but while doing so, I made sure the young man taking my refund, as well as another female employee who was near the counter, heard about the horrifying experience I have to face at their place of employment, just because I have dark skin. I may beat my head against this same wall in the future- but only because it seems these awful, dehumanizing confrontations is the only way I will rid myself of the directed hatred this,policy tries to saddle me with. My future will be more fair, and better. I demand it be so. Remember, I am an optimist. read more

Great place to walk around with friends, grab a cute drink, and update your plants/pots. We always go to the open house every year and that is always a great experience. The employees are always extremely friendly. I have never seen an employee there that was not kind. The little coffee shop inside also has great coffee and a matcha limade that is pretty good. I so wanted to love this store. But I don't. For one plant, the salesperson said $59 and the ticket said $69. Noticed I was the only person with a ticket for one plant in line. I was told to pay for it and then I could pick it up even though I had a basket. The checkout is horrible. I was told to wait in a long line while other lines were moving faster. We bought a chiminea. They were on sale. It rang up correctly with the sale price. The register person was efficient and friendly. The gentleman that loaded it the car was the best of all though- younger man with a mustache(maybe a beard?), dark hair, and a ball cap. He not only loaded in the car but put wood blocks in so it wouldn't roll around and also told me to make sure I 'temper' it( not burn it too hot immediately) so that it won't crack. Family tree is a well manicured plant shop with a wide selection for both tropical, veggies/edibles, and flowers. We came for their spring opening event which was quite a bit of fun and provided a nice environment for the community. Everyone here is always very friendly and quick to give a helping hand. However, please be aware the prices here are on the higher side. The plants are well maintained and I have never bought a plant with diseases or problems from this location, which justifies the price point for me. I will say that for flowers/veggies they don't point out which species are local to the area, which is a downside for me as this feature is available at some other plant shops. read more

This nursery is so nice! At first when I arrived, I stayed towards the front and was looking at there outdoor plants ( thinking that was the entire selection) . I had no idea the size of this place! Once you go inside and through the doors there is an HUGE outside area. I didn't even make it through all of the selections and choices because it was that many. I ended buying 4 hanging plants , 1 cute house plant, plus 1 pot. I spent around $125 which I thought was very reasonable. We actually stopped in to grab some caffeine at Equinox Coffee on our way to the Overland Park Botanical Gardens this week. We soon discovered that the coffee shop that I've been eager to visit is closed until November, but we decided to look around the nursery since we were there. The Family Tree complex is huge and slightly overwhelming in a positive way. Each section of the place is as large as many retail shops. The greenhouse areas were filled with 1000's of varieties from mums to succulents; edibles to ornamentals. The interior shop building is a wonderland of pottery, seasonal decorations, tools, canned foods... something to delight anyone and the perfect place for gift purchases. After spending $3 admission at the OP Botanical Gardens, I could see Family Tree charging a refundable with purchase admission fee. The selection and curation is remarkable and a perfect way to spend an hour or so just wandering and admiring the greenery. read more

What a dangerous place to be for those who have a green thumb. I am not joking when I say I could easily spend hours (and have) in this nursery browsing their large selection of plants. I have recently gotten into houseplants and have went from having none to way more than I want to admit. Family Tree Nursery is the main reason why. I have only been to their largest Overland Park location and have now found my happy place. This location not only has a large greenhouse full of many types of plants and flowers, but they also have a building full of seasonal home decor. I highly recommend following their newsletter or social media to catch the latest deals and events. Their free potting weekends and free plant days are not to be missed. It is impossible for me to walk into this place and not walk out with a cart full of houseplants. Compared to other nurseries in the KC area, FTN definitely has the biggest selection of plants, flowers, pots, and so much more. I would say prices are slightly above average, but there are definitely solid deals if you look hard enough. I love houseplants and my husband is into outdoor gardening. Between the two of us, we're good for a visit to Family Tree Nursery at least once a month. I enjoy coming during my lunch hour to oogle at the tropicals. The persons working inside the nursery are the best. I'm usually greeted warmly when I walk in. Most of the staff and inviting and knowledgeable. They play with plants all day and you can tell they love it. They are always willing to help and make conversation about the plants. That's the good part. Truth be told, I have been meaning to review FTN for some time but was on the fence for a star rating. Today's check-out experience decided that for me. Normally shoppers queue up in a single line and then filter into the next available check out. On today's visit, there were no shoppers waiting, and four registers open with lights on. I went to an empty register with a light on. There was no person behind it - I assumed they were helping at the next register as there were two employees there. I waited patiently for them to wrap up what they were doing - and when they were done at the first register, the second person walked off. Another shopper walks in from outside. They have a cart full of plants and they are ready to check out. They make boisterous conversation about how much they love doing this for their spouse. The staff engages and laughs with them. I am still at the register. No one is coming. No one is acknowledging that I'm waiting. There's a person on the phone, another person who appeared to be keeping their head down preparing an order for outside while at a register, a person in an office on the phone, and another person walking around. In the meantime, I'm waiting. I get out my debit card so that I'm ready to pay and I fix my face so I look less impatient. The person walking around barked at the person on the phone. They needed to hurry up and come check. They hung up and asked where to go. They were told to go to the register behind me - to help the shopper who had just walked in. I put my card away, left my plants on the counter and causally walked out. Here's the deal. As a Black man shopping, experiences like this remind me I'm in Johnson County. I have been flat out ignored in this store, but usually it's the other shoppers. Visit after visit, I have been missed by shopping carts, and rudely bumped into without a glance or an "excuse me." I've politely asked to pass shoppers on multiple occasions and been scoffed at, or flat out ignored. It's not always like this, but it's like this more often than it is not, and it doesn't matter how busy the store is. Today's visit lost my business for Family Tree Nursery. I've checked out and not been spoken to, save for a dollar amount. No thank you, no nothing; receipt shoved in hand. For a while I even thought it was me - until I watched the check-out person chat up my husband who was paying separately and who is also a white man. The check-out person's attitude goes from cold and icy (for me - shopping for plants while Black), to overly nice (for my handsome white husband), all based on the customer's melanin? Today was the final straw. If you've read this entire review, save your money and give it to a nursery on the other side of State Line. read more

One day we went to go pick up some plants at family tree nursery after they set up there Christmas displays, We were blown away by all of their wreaths and Christmas decorations. We decided to have one custom made. One of the workers put us in touch with Jullian ( hope I didn't butcher her name to bad) She was absolutely lovely to deal with! It was Saturday errand day for my wife and I was dragged.. I mean encouraged to come along. We were trying to find some plants to breath some life into the living room as we're in the dead of winter at the moment, not-so-patiently waiting for signs of green to start emerging outside. The greenhouse area of this nursery is like a day in the tropics. It's nice and humid with sunshine pouring in, and with nice decorative plants all around. That's where we spent the majority of our time. The inside has more lawn and gardening basics, although everything was priced several notches higher than some other comparable spots I've been to. The most magical place on earth and my favorite spot in Kansas/Missouri. I could just live here and be surrounded by all things pretty. The atmosphere is so wonderful, even if you're not interested in buying anything stop by and enjoy the scenery. It's a botanical garden you can take home with you. I've been a loyal customer for a year now, all the plants I've purchased have been of great quality. I recommend my friends and family to visit for their plant/planting needs. They have expert staff to help you with plant care or just there to give you the names of the plants. I was so amazed, there are experts that can tell me the Latin name of any species and tell how to care for it. I've visited other nurseries where such help was not provided and coming from personal experience, it helps knowing what your taking home in order to better care for it. Each plant has different requirements to be successful. I live downtown and have south facing windows that get plenty of bright light, I've had success with tropical plants. They're doing stellar. I've purchased plants varying from air plants, to rubber trees, ferns, snake plants, geraniums, and pathos. My apartment has remained cooler this year with the help of my plant babies. The air has been cleaner as well, the plants have been eliminating germs and toxins from my atmosphere. I usually get sick 3-4 times a year and since I've started growing my plant family, I have yet to get sick. Plants are amazing beings and I highly recommend getting one... or ten. Don't be afraid of them and keep in mind that it's okay if your plant dies, it's a rite of passage and you can always get more. read more

This nursery is nirvana. I will never shop big box chains again. There is no comparison in terms of plant quality and the prices are SO much lower than I expected! The whole atmosphere has a very zen vibe...the greenhouse is an oasis. FTN has found a lifelong guest in me. The one in Shawnee is also top notch and I'll probably end up visiting the Missouri locations as well. The only teeny tiny issue I have is that some of their rare and/or succulent hybrids don't always have IDs on them. I usually am reluctant to buy plants without identification, but these plants are so healthy and just simply things of beauty. I will buy them and figure out what they are later. But if any of the staff/owners read this, I would love it if all of the plants were labeled with their ID. I'm still going to leave 5 stars because this place deserves 6 stars. This is my new go to spot for all flowers and plants. I'm the kind of person who wants to be super knowledge when it comes to plants. I want a jungle in my living room and I want to have a wicked garden, but just don't know where to start. Jonah, the owner (I believe?) was incredible at answering any questions I had. He said I could reach him via their Facebook page with any questions I had about my house plants. He was so kind and obviously knew what he was talking about. Apparently we were there in off season, but I couldn't tell because the space is well kept, well stocked, and beautifully arranged. I could have spent all day there! As you walk around, there are really helpful signs that describe the kind of plant you're looking at and what they need. That's the kind of help I'm looking for when it comes to plants.
