This is one of those places that I always noticed when I drove past when it was closed and did not come to mind until I was in dire need for my indoor plants. Most plant owners know it's best to repot plants according to the weather, as the spring flowers blooms it's best to refresh potting soil as well. I feel like a horrible plant parent as I haven't been able to restore the soil for almost 2 years. Since my plants were in desperate need of being revitalized I wanted to steer away from Walmart, Lowe's or even Home Depot soil. I've purchased from all of these stores previously and I've been having an even bigger issue with gnats lately. Cadence welcomed me in and asked what she could help with, Matt teamed up with her when I mentioned the gnat issue and both offered various options. We lucked out by just so happening to come on a Family Fun Day! My daughter and I enjoyed snacks, painting pumpkins, and discovering new things I can use to save my plants at home. The customer service was genuine, thorough, warm and consistent; I don't think a customer could ask for more. Just the service alone makes me want to continue coming back, but the products suggested are also speaking for themselves. Now my plants are happy, I made memories with my mini and I know exactly where to go whenever my plants need something. Excited to watch them all flourish in their new soil! read more

I loved my visit today to Earl May! (it may or may not have led me to finish my afternoon with an earl gray...) The three employees I encountered were all FABULOUS - especially ...Audria?? She was amazing! If you love being outside and want to spruce up your space, come here for all your needs. Silly gardening themed t-shirts ("don't hate... propagate" type of stuff), decor, treatments, tools, and of course, all the indoor and outdoor plants of your dreams! LOVELY!! read more

I'd barely discovered Earl May on 87th Street before they moved further west on Shawnee Mission Parkway. But when you see the nursery, the larger location makes sense. Inside, you'll find everything from yard art to bird houses and feeders, plus all the ingredients for a perfect lawn. Earl May sells implements to dig, rake and weed; fertilizers and feed; herbicides and pest control; even furniture to sit in and admire your lawn. The bulbs and seeds inside are complemented outside with rows and rows of seasonally available annuals and perennials, as well as trees of every shape and size. Needless to say, you have plenty of choices for adding color and shade to your outdoor environment. With locations in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, Earl May isn't as local as some nurseries around town, but they're also not a discount store that periodically sell plants. Green things are their year-round business, and if you have a question you'll usually get an informed answer from the employee you ask. read more

This is a really nice garden center. The best thing about Earl May is the employees. They are very knowledgeable in their products and can recommend the right fix for any situation. They were very helpful in telling us how to overseed our yard and grow a vegetable garden - we harvested hundreds of tomatoes this summer thanks to Earl's advice. They also host weekly seminars in everything from grass growing to gardening to tree planting. The seminars are helpful and well presented. Prices here are a little higher than Lowe's or Home Depot, but for the most part the product quality is better. Plus they have free popcorn. read more

Staff was very helpful but the plants are very pricey. I understand they maintain high standards and quality but still $20 for a plan of mums is not my deal. But the staff answers every question and are very knowledgeable. read more

This a very nice store inside and out. They have a very good eclectic selection of products and plants. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Their prices are a bit on the high end on some things, and I understand they're competing with the big box stores. Even still, some things really miss the mark price wise. read more

Horrible customer service. The potting soil sets up like concrete. They would not take it back even tho their name was on the bag. The plants are leggy and just not impressive. The very unfriendly lady at the counter to nobody wanting to help out people to the car with purchases. Go to Family Tree...huge difference read more

I've been in several times for various gardening needs, and each time the staff has been friendly, to the point of actually asking me if I need any help (rather than me having to seek them out). There is one young woman in particular (whose name I've unfortunately forgotten, but I will update the next time I'm in there) who seems to always be there and really know her stuff. Glad others have had a good experience. Used Earl May last year and was pleased. This year not so much, we were given misinformation about the trees from the first employee and told they would not get more trees in. We were there a week later and surprise, quite a few new trees. We're doing new landscaping in our yard so have bought a number of plants from them recently but not again. Only good thing is they have free tree planting in the fall for trees over $100. Only person I felt was helpful recently was the manager, Tony. Other employees don't really know their trees and bushes. Went in today and asked about a dwarf forsythia I thought I had seen there two weeks ago. When I asked if they knew if they had any the employee's response was, "Not that I know of." What kind of salesman is that? I don't mind if they say they don't have it, I don't expect them to carry every bush/plant but I think their lack of knowledge about their products is frustrating. I'm a home gardener/landscaper and I know much more about their products than they do! read more
