It was a chilly and slightly drizzly day, but we saw two pods of Orcas, and incredibly, one of them swam up to us and went right under our boat. Apparently a first for our crew. They made sure to give the whales good distance after that and I appreciated how much the safety and conservation of the whales and other wildlife are top of mind. We also saw a humpback whale and quite a few bald eagles. We have an adult child back in the States who is a park ranger, and I know how passionate she is about what she does and how much fun she has teaching people about the local ecology, and our two naturalists reminded me so much of her. They were having so much fun themselves and they enthusiastically answered all of the many questions we had for them. This was a once in a lifetime experience and we loved every minute!

My first tour got canceled since not enough people had signed up, but there was great customer service and they moved us out to the next tour 15 minutes later. I was nervous because the small boat was completely open vs. being covered, but it was a beautiful day and the sea air felt so nice. The tour was led by Captain Jimmy, who had a very kind, friendly demeanor and immediately put us at ease. He seemed to be one step ahead of every other tour out there, to the point where we lucked out and ended up very close to a pod of orcas. Additionally, Jimmy was very knowledgeable and respectful of the animals. We saw many orcas and humpback whales as well as sea lions and birds. It was amazing to see how the entire ecosystem worked together. This was the best part of our trip and I will recommend this group to all my friends and family! We were surprised when we arrived at the boat, it was way smaller than we expected. When we booked the reservation I could've sworn the picture showed a much larger boat. With 11-12 passengers and 2 captains it felt extremely crammed. It was also rainy that day and not all of us could fit inside the tiny cabin with the captain, so about 4-5 people had to sit outside in the rain/wind. We did see 2 pods of orcas during the tour, and first group got really close to us and possibly swam under the boat which was really cool (we saw a female, calf, and large male orca up close). The second pod we saw from very far away and all we could really see were black dots (that I think were fins?) in the distance. We also saw porpoises and various types of sea birds. The captains were really knowledgeable and friendly, and we enjoyed the tour overall. However the fact that we had to sit uncomfortably shoulder-to-shoulder really detracted from the experience. I also feel they should give a warning about possible seasickness, as the waves could be rough the farther out you get.

We were also impressed with the Captain's professionalism and mariner expertise overall. We always felt safe and also appreciated a willingness to extend our trip time at no cost to ensure we found the Orca pods. The water was choppy on our day out, so we experienced the awesomeness of the Salish Sea as well as her beauty! Our two grandsons, age 12 and 14, really had fun. For all of us, the highlight of the trip was definitely seeing and hanging out with the two incredible Orca pods. It was memorable without compare. I was especially pleased that I was able to take some great video of the Orcas and wonderful photos of my grandchildren.

We unfortunately saw no whales during our first outing (so many cute seals and eagles though!), but they were able to squeeze us in the next day for another chance at no additional cost. And on that second trip we were blessed to see multiple orca pods socializing together! They had a mic that they inserted into the water, and we got to listen to them socialize. They claimed smoke in the engine room and limped back to port before we even turned into the Arm. Other reviews have reported unexplained itinerary changes that eliminated the main part of the trip. One has to wonder if they don't go up the Arm simply to save money when it's not fully booked or if their boats are that unreliable. While I understand mechanical issues, their compensation policy was completely inadequate. They offered a free drink on board and a coupon for 15% off a future cruise. Anyone booking on the internet can get a 20% discount off any cruise! After much back and forth they finally offered a 20% refund. The final price after this discount was approximately double the price of a narrated harbor tour. We received an un-narrated tour of the container port instead of a tour of the natural environment, which is what we were promised. We feel cheated by Harbour Cruises of Vancouver. Sail at your own risk!
