Fantasy Island Campground - Campgrounds Near Me - Sunbury, Pennsylvania

We recently stayed at a Sunbury/Northumberland area campground and really enjoyed our stay and the area. So much so that when we found that campground booked for the summer we took the advice of a co worker and stayed at Fantasy Island nearby. If you're looking for a simple, affordable, fun for the kids camping retreat this is your spot. Located right on the Susquehanna the (seasonal) riverfront spots had their own boat slips. The rest of the campground wasn't wooded in the least which I appreciated, but the sites were pretty tight. Each site had a concrete patio and full hook up including cable and wifi - although I was unable to connect to the wifi (hubby did though). At only $42/night in the prime season the price couldn't be beat! The campground was small and simple with one bathhouse. It wasn't horrible but there were some critters. It was equipped with a table/chairs in front of a mirror for a makeshift vanity area to do your makeup separate from the sink. That was a smart touch. They also rented out one cabin. I didn't see any areas for tents. There were about 100 camp sites. They also had a playground and volleyball net. I was told that usually a food truck parks inside the premises. The store was small but did sell the essentials at a very good price. Imagine my surprise when I ran out of suntan lotion and picked up a full size tube of a kid formula spf 50 for only $2!!!! The dollar store costs more than that! They also had ice cream novelties ranging in price from .35 cents to a max of $2, flip flops and floaties were only a buck. They did close early at 7pm, but the attached rec room/gathering place/arcade combo was open at all hours. I noticed in the rec room they had bikes/scooters you could rent (we didn't inquire) as well as books. There was a big screen tv with dvd as well as a huge, comfortable leather sectional sofa. You could watch your movies there but they didn't supply dvds. A pool was present complete with a limited number of loungers and covered tables ranging in depth from 3-5'. It was so relaxing on the hottest weekend of the season and usually full of campers. The weekend of our stay was Christmas in July and they went all out. If you signed up your kids at the store Santa called their name and they got a baggie of goodies. The rec area was all decked out for the holidays complete with the tv set on a fireplace mood, complete with crackle noise effects. Several of the campers did elaborate Christmas displays. When I say this campground is simple, it isn't an insult. It's just enough stuff to unwind and have kids get back to being kids; playing on the equipment, swimming in the pool, and playing with other kids. While I do wish they had more activities scheduled, it was nice to just take it easy and let the kids play without a lot of shuffling around to make sure we do and see everything. They did have a potluck dinner the one night which we really enjoyed. The manager was super friendly and involved as were our neighbors who were all seasonal. Guests are free ($3 for pool use - get wrist band at store) and can stay till 10 pm, wish I knew that in advance as we would have had some friends come up for the day. From talking with the seasonals a spot is $1900 per season which runs April 15-Oct 15. At that time you must remove and dismantle your campsite (sheds, rocks, garden, outdoor décor, etc) as township doesn't allow campers to be kept there all year. You can get your same site back if you prefer. They do not rent golf carts. No dogs allowed in any of the buildings, pool area, and playground. As a non dog person I really appreciated that! Overall a very nice, clean, vintage feeling campground, one will we most likely return to when we want some downtime. read more

The best way to describe this place is "quirky". In over 10 years of camping in privately owned campgrounds, I have never experienced some of the things that I did here. I arrived on a Sunday around 5 PM and the office was already closed for the day. It was the week of July 4th, so I would think they would have been expecting campers and wouldn't have closed so early. When the owners were summoned by a nice gentleman who is a seasonal camper there, they came and opened the office. They were perplexed by my arrival, even though I had made my reservation 8 months before. They didn't seem to be very organized and couldn't find my reservation. I told them my name at least three times during the checkin, because they were so out of sorts they couldn't remember it. I showed them the e-mail confirmation of my reservation on my iPhone. Finally, they came up with a reservation slip and wanted to collect $100 more than what the balance should have been. I showed them the error, which was a clear miscalculation by whomever wrote up the slip. I got the information to connect to the free WiFi and proceeded to my campsite. As far as the site I was on is concerned, I had no complaints. It was a decent sized site with lots of shade and a nice concrete slab patio. I had no problems with any of the hookups and everything on the site worked as expected. The free WiFi is garbage. I wasn't able to get it working on any of my iOS devices. I've been an IT professional for over 15 years, so it isn't like I don't know technology. We're 100% an Apple family, which I find to be the most compatible devices across the board. But the WiFi here has some two factor web based authentication scheme that just doesn't work on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, etc. I was able to get my MacBook Pro to connect, but even then the bandwidth was akin to 56k dialup speeds. Just because something is free, doesn't mean it's worthwhile. When I asked the guy at the office about it, he said that people with Apple products have problems, but Windoze and Android devices work. OK.....it doesn't say WiFi that only works with certain devices. The swimming pool could be so much nicer. It doesn't seem to be very maintained and I found myself concerned wether it even had proper levels of chemicals in it to keep everyone healthy. We literally had to skim the pool ourselves everyday to use it, clearing leaves and dead bugs that got in there overnight. They have a solar cover sitting right there that would keep a lot of stuff out of the pool, but I guess it would be too much effort for them to put it on at night when the pool closes? The bottom of the pool didn't seem to have been vacuumed in a long time either. From when we arrived on Sunday until about Thursday or Friday, the mini-golf course had knee high weeds grown up between each hole. It also looked very dilapidated and small and isn't anything we even bothered with while staying there. The hours that the arcade is open align with the hours of the office. So, if you're thinking about shooting a game of pool in the evening, you're pretty much out of luck through the week because it is closed. Most places we frequent, the office (including activities, arcades, etc.) is open until at least 9-10 PM. Here, the office and activities shutdown at 5 or 6 PM. The arcade isn't anything special either. Billiard balls got stuck in the pool table. The puck got stuck inside the air hockey table so many times during a game that my wife just got frustrated and asked for her money back. The guy working the office that day gave us a wire clothes hanger for fishing the puck out of the table when it got stuck. While the bathrooms were generally clean, they sometimes smelled bad and had absolutely no air movement at all. I am used to bathrooms with windows open and sometimes a small fan to keep the air moving. Also, if you wanted to take a shower in the bathrooms, it cost money! I've never heard of such thing, ever. The showers are coin operated. We also utilized the laundry area during our stay and found it to be a nice convenience to have access to. Something that cracks me up about this campground is the number of people (mostly the seasonal campers) who have golf carts. You can walk around the entire place in about 5-7 minutes, but people are driving around in golf carts like it's a sprawling 100 acre campground. I did very much like the location and proximity to other non-campground things to enjoy. Bike riding was also very nice both in the campground, across the highway at the State Park and around the neighborhood where the campground lies. The Sunbury Social Club is nearby, and they offered free fireworks for the 4th of July, which was a nice time. All in all, we had a nice week....even given all the "quirks". My family is just used to camping in places that are meticulously cared for and updated. I guess we're kind of spoiled that way? read more

Been at this campground for many years and yes I have seen it go downhill but last season new owners took over and have been making so many improvements and upgrades it is a great place again. And of course the owners are great people and will consider ideas for improvements or activity ideas, especially for the kids. I just have to say that I am very happy coming to this place. read more

This campground is not big rig friendly. On a busy weekend, it was difficult to get in and out of the site. Still a struggle with my 28' trailer Carry a flashlight due to all the trip hazards. I hope the new owners address them soon. read more

We have been staying at Fantasy Island Campground for five years. Last year the new owners took over in the middle of the season. They have already started the process of making the campground a friendly, clean well run place to visit. They offer fun events each weekend for both kids and adults in safe environment. The location is awesome right on the Susquehanna River with easy access to the water. I would recommend it to everyone. read more

Can't say how fun our visit was to fantasy island campground was . We camped there for 2 weekends first for 4th of July weekend there activities was great very family friendly the band they had play was so good and such a friendly crowd of ppl camping there . We've been at a lot of campground and norimally where is majority is seasonals they can be rude but that was not the case here they was all so friendly and welcoming ... The young couple that owns it is so helpful and friendly are truck was having problems and he helped my husband figure out the problem the area is so beautiful very scenic lots to do in the area ... Lots was nicely sized and well kept ... Clean bathrooms and laundry room ... Firewood delivery which was awesome they have all the amenities you need definitely will go back ... Great place to be campers are all friendly people. there are many upgrades in the 5 year plan there have already been improvements made in the pool area updates are being made to some of the electric boxes to hopefully minimize problems with that. There has been some trees cut for various reasons coin op showers have been removed and replaced with timers. Some improvement were made on the playground and the weeds are going to be looked at a lot closer before they get out of hand. read more

our group had several sites, very small, cannot stake a canopy tent nothing, rented a camper as well for sister, hot water heater stopped working, bed consisted of a box spring, management not helpful at all, office closed when suppose to be open , wifi totally sucks. read more

We got a last minute reservation at Fantasy Island. wasnt sure what to expect. It was a very nice, quaint little campground along the Susquehanna river. sites were nice, bathrooms and laundry facilities were nice and clean. They had a band Saturday night and pig roast on Sunday night. The pool kept the kids busy on the hot days. The only complaint we had was the WiFi, dont know if it is because the place was packed and everyone was using it or it just isnt good. We went to camp and not use our phones so it isnt a big deal. We plan on going back again sometime. read more

I am a full time camper at fantasy island. This is one of the best campgrounds I have camped in. The new owners Tim and Lacy are two of the nicest people ever. They are doing everything they can to make it the best. They bought a campground that was a mess. From former owners not doing anything (spending the profits on themselves) and ignorant (some not all) weekenders vandalism. Give it a chance come camp for a weekend and see. read more

We have been seasonal campers here for several years. Very family oriented campground. New owners came onboard last year and immediately began improvements and upgrades. If you have never camped here or have and were not impressed, give it another try. It truly will be a pleasurable experience. Great place to have fun and meet some very friendly campers. read more
