Entrance to Far West Dog Park aka Great Northern Dam
    Joy W.

This Great Northern Dam is also known as the Far West dog park that resides on the other side of Mopac (where Far West Blvd ends/starts). This is not a true off leash dog park and most dogs stay on their leash. That's because this park is also a water runoff/ rain water dam. There is no swimming or dogs allowed in the water although I have been guilty of letting my dog jump in if the water is fresh and he's hot. I have seen others let their dogs in the water but I would be mindful of how quickly funk can accumulate in standing water and wouldn't recommend it. I will say, if you're in the neighborhood or within walking distance then it's worth going to because it's always nice to catch a bit of nature within the city. It is a small 1/3 mile loop with access from Great Northern Blvd or from Far West Blvd overpass. It does have a dock/overlook of the dam but it is often dry. It's not much of a dog park but you can make the most of it if you're a nearby resident.

While a great deal of the park is open to the public, some parts of the parks grounds are under construction specifically the pool area (according to a construction worker on site, construction has been ongoing for a 1.5 years). The grounds appear to be well manicured. Large, shaded oak trees are the focal point of the park. The park's amenities are a standout. Northwest park features playgrounds, pickle ball, tennis courts, picnic tables, and a scenic pond. The park appears children friendly except for the portion under construction. There's also a walking path around the park and Shoal Creek running along the edge. Overall, Northwest Park is a versatile, green space where recreation, nature, and community converge.

The entire parking lot to the pool has also been closed down. You can still park on the side of the pool or all the way behind it. Considering how big this project is, I think it's safe to assume that it's going to be closed for the entire summer of 2025. The rest of the park is still available for use, although all the property next to the pool is fenced off. So you may wish to skip this as your pool choice this year and try again next year.
