I was in awe as I drove up the drive to the exquisite Fargo Mansion. Nature had delicately coated the mansion and grounds with snow that created a sparkle like diamonds dancing in a grand ballroom. My curiosity and excitement to be inside this enchanted mansion turned to delight and grandeur when I crossed the threshold. Our Host and Innkeeper, Tom Boycks, greeted us with his charming smile and genuine welcome. At that moment I knew that I had entered a very special place, because I no longer felt like a weary traveler, but was transformed into a royal that has just arrived at the grand ball. Tom guided us through the breathtaking lower level, describing each room and sharing stories that furthered solidified that the Fargo Mansion was the grandest of mansions. We continued our tour to the second floor where the five beautiful and thoughtfully designed guest rooms were located. Each room has its own luxurious, marble bathroom with bathrobes and toiletries. Furniture and decor placement made each room appear grand and spacious. The room that we were staying in had a lovely sitting area that I found myself drawn to. The spot was so relaxing that I just sat there listening to the classical music that flowed through the air. My quiet meditation was ended when my daughter asked what I was doing. She was in shock that I could just be sitting there doing nothing (not even looking at my phone). Tom had provided us recommendations for our evening meal, which was much appreciated since we were not familiar with Lake Mills, WI. The evening wrapped up with relaxing bliss as we snuggled under the cozy bedding and enjoyed watching our favorite shows on the flat screen in our room. When I woke to the sound of my alarm I was greeted with delicate streams of sunlight shining through the lace curtains. My usual morning stumble to the bathroom was more like a waltz, I knew that the day was going to be amazing. I enjoyed an energizing shower (the water pressure and temperature was perfect). Now invigorated and dressed, I walked down the grand staircase to the glittering dining room where Tom greeted us with a warm "Good morning." The dining table was set for royalty and the breakfast that graced the plates was delicious. I was saddened to take the last bite and drink the last sip of my cranberry juice, because I knew that my visit was about to end. With my bags in the car and sadness in my heart, I said good-bye to Tom. A hug and a see you soon, sealed the deal... I would be back and soon. I pulled out of the drive with a smile on my face, because my reservation was made for my next visit. Sadly disappointed with the Fargo Mansion. The pictures on the website seem to be quite old. In reality there are multiple open holes in the foundation(think rodent entrances)-- the downstairs of the mansion itself is cluttered, dusty - many of the personal clothing items of the owner are askew about the downstairs and upper hallway including personal mail and laundered underwear left sitting in common area of home. While our two reserved rooms were freshly cleaned, the "over decorated" rooms held a dirty duty feeling. The sinks in one of the guest room filled completely before draining. The kitchen closet has food items stacked next to a bag of DeCon rat poisoning. When looking about the lower door and admiring the woodwork on the staircase we noted a big hole in the woodwork of the staircase and MANY rat droppings outside of the broken woodwork. while Barry was friendly enough his "mansion" needs a scrubbing-to say the least. Sadly, the mansion needs a declutteting and deep cleaning. We did respond to an email from the owners and let them know our thoughts. We have received no reply- very disappointing. For now we will interpret no response as lack of concern from the owners. Would not recommend this hote. We ended ours read more

I don't know why Yelp is saying that the Fargo Mansion is closed - it is completely open for business. I went there this weekend with Girlfriend for a weekend getaway and had a wonderful time staying at the Fargo. The architecture is gorgeous and intriguing (hello?! hidden bookcase wall concealing the bathroom and jacuzzi in the master suite?) and there are interesting pictures, antiques, and knick-knacks all over the place. We arrived on Sunday and checked in. The owner was friendly, accommodating and helpful with dinner suggestions and directions to the restaurants / local attractions / ect. Granted, there were only three restaurants in the whole town and they were all on the same street. Of course that has little to do with the mansion just know that if you stay here you may get the urge to trek it up to Madison for some decent food. We had been planning on staying in the main suite but unfortunately it flooded the night before. So, we downgraded to the other jacuzzi suite at a nice discount. There is an "open bar" of sorts. Serve yourself, very casual but decent liquor / wine selection with abundant mixers. The breakfast was delicious though light - homemade blueberry / apple crepes and coffee / orange juice / water / tea were offered to drink (though the open bar was still set up. I was tempted to pinch a bit more vodka and making myself a screwdriver.) All in all I had a fantastic time at the Fargo. Genuinely nice, friendly owners who apparently head up the B&B society in WI, good food, open bar, huge, interesting, well decorated home, and really quiet. It was like a trip back in time of sorts. read more

I don't even know where to begin the praises here. Tom, our host, kindly greeted us with a smile, incredible hospitality, and fantastic conversation full of recommendations. The mansion itself is absolutely beautiful, and my boyfriend and I immediately felt comfortable walking through the rooms of old photos, old furniture, and tons of old memories. Our room was fantastic with a great whirlpool tub, wifi, and about a billion cable channels. We had access to a fully stocked bar with top shelf liquor and plenty of mixers; we also had access to the fridge with water, beer, and snacks. Breakfast was great; the town is so cute; there are so many places to ride bikes to, which makes for a fantastic getaway. I can't wait to return! read more

It's hard to find an architectural wonder in a small town setting for a BnB in the American heartland as fantastic as the Fargo House in charming Lake Mills. The hosts Tom and Berry have resurrected this historic neighborhood gem into an incredible home resplendent with native oak moldings and comfortable rooms right out of nineteenth century Americana. Their stories and artifacts of the house's origins are of a charm only surpassed by their generous hospitality. And for a winter stay, the room's whirlpool bath was pretty nice too. read more

We couldn't have been happier with this accidental find in lovely Lake Mills. In searching for B&Bs in Madison, limited availability led us here. How lucky! Our hosts were charming and very gracious. We felt welcome from the moment we arrived. The house is a Victorian gem, and it is so clear that Tom and Barry have poured much love and attention into it over the past 30+ years. We skipped Madison all together and spent our time exploring the area in and around Lake Mills. We travel quite a bit and it takes a lot for us to consider returning somewhere given all the options for adventures. Fargo Mansion Inn is on our list for a repeat visit. This establishment is exactly what most B&Bs aspire to be and never quite make it: warm, inviting, and extremely comfortable, in a fascinating historic setting, run by very capable and caring hosts. Like Brittany K I don't understand why it says Fargo Mansion is closed because I went there with her over Labor Day weekend. We had reserved their nicest sweet only to receive a call while we were driving there saying it was flooded the night before. To compensate we got the next best jacuzzi suite with a nice discount. Upon arrival I was immediately taken back by the magnitude of the three story mansion. It was a little confusing as to where to enter but we figured it out after ten minutes of walking around. There were tons of antiques and other nick nacks that were cool to look at. It felt like I had been taken back to the 1800's. The owners were cordial and helpful when making restaurant decisions (though there's only about 4 to pick from in all of Lake Mills). They were also nice in providing us drinks of all sorts that we could help ourselves to. I also have to note the awesome cookies they had. They tasted like the top of an oatmeal cream pie. So if you need milk and cookies before you go to sleep they have you covered. I noticed it was extremely quiet which also made for a good nights sleep. The jacuzzi tub was awesome and fully functional. For breakfast we had some thick crepe with a fruity mix on top. Very tasty and light enough to not weigh me down for my day of shopping in Madison. If you are looking at a place to get away this is your spot (and really I mean get away because Madison is about 30 tree filled miles away and at the mansion there is only one tv located in the common area and no working wireless internet). I would definitely have back up options for entertainment if you are planning on just hanging out at the mansion your entire stay. I did enjoy the architecture and my stay however. And I must note that the owners of the mansion had a cute cat that kept following my girlfriend around. As a pet owner away from her furry kids on a weekend getaway it was nice to have a rent-a-cat to play with. Lastly it was comforting to be in an establishment owned by the gay community. It's always nice to be somewhere LGBT friendly. Four stars for sure!!! read more

Tom and Barry, the innkeepers, have spent over 35 years restoring this exquisite mansion, listed on the national registry of historic places. They provided us with amenities above and beyond most B&Bs for comfort and relaxation. Tom was warm, welcoming and gregarious and we enjoyed our conversations with him throughout our visit. The E. J. Fargo room was lavish, with a large bathroom including a shower and separate soaking tub for two. The room also offered a private balcony to enjoy. Bedsheets, towels and soaps were luxurious. We loved staying here! The main street of Lake Mills was only a few blocks away, with coffee shops, a variety of restaurants, shops, and a winery. The Grist Bar & Table was worth mentioning for their superb braised short ribs. read more
