We went to the counter, checked in and I was able to switch to a room that was available. This hotel is very similar to other Tru hotels and just what we needed. The facility felt new or at least very taken care of. Overall this was a great stay and perfect for what we needed during our visit to Stoughton.

They have a very trendy sitting area in the lobby, coffee bar, and direct entrance to the pool area. That area is HUGE. They could've made the pool DOUBLE it's size with all that deck space. It is a decent size though and they had it nice and warm! They had a delicious free breakfast in the mornings that included hot options, the usual AND cute breakfast sandwiches in a fridge that you could heat up. We were part of a large group in town for a family funeral, so we stuck it out for the two nights. I helped my mom get into her first floor room and found a hole in the bathroom door, blood on a bedspread (which was replaced without apology and some coaxing), and she found a used (hairy) bar of soap in the shower left by a previous guest. Ick. You could also very clearly hear the upstairs guests walking around. My room was on the second floor. Only staircase access found a big crack in the hallway window. I pulled out the iron and ironing board in the morning to touch up my dress. The board pad/cover had a hole in it. My mom said, "oh yours only had ONE hole, mine had two." I liked the magnifying mirror in the bathroom however all the dust on it was a turn off. I was okay with the bed. It was comfortable enough and seemed clean. Each room has a mini fridge and microwave. I was looking for a coffee maker, but you have to wait for breakfast in the morning for the coffee. Other things you expect with a lower end hotel were present, i.e. small thin towels, little tiny soap and cheesy outdated decor. The hotel is located just down the street from McDonald's, grocery and drug stores. That was nice.

On April 3, I went to their site to make reservations.( We were going to a concert in Stoughton on the 11th of April and as part of our Anniversary celebration, we wanted to stay at a nice bed and breakfast. I was re-directed to another site and I went through the process of making a reservation for April 11th.( which also included making sure there was a room available ) including giving my credit card information. I thought it was a done deal. Then I received an e-mail stating that my reservation "request" had gone through and that I would receive a confirmation within 48 hrs and that if I didn't I should contact the Inn. After 48 hrs, I still hadn't received anything from the Inn, so I called. I only got an answering machine, so I left a message to please call me. The next day, still nothing from the inn, so I called and left another message. I began to panic that we weren't going to have anywhere to spend the night, but still, I waited for an e-mail or a call. The next day, I called and left ANOTHER message. Nothing. I left messages every day up until April 8 and there was still no word from the inn and nothing had been charged to my credit card so I assumed the reservation, for whatever reason, had not gone through. I searched the web once more for a b&b in or near Stoughton. The closest thing I could find was 20 miles away and much more expensive, I didn't have much of a choice but to take it. I received confirmation of my reservation of the new inn within 12 hours. All was well until April 10 ( the day before the concert ) I received an e-mail from the Naeset-Roe Inn, confirming my reservation, etc. I immediately got on the phone to the Naeset, but, guess what? No answer. I left a message to please call me and the reason I wanted a call-back. I wrote a detailed e-mail explaining why I no longer needed the reservations and how I had tried to contact them. I thought that was that. The following day, we left for our trip. After our weekend trip, I checked my home phone messages and I had a call from the Naeset, saying we were no shows, etc, etc. I immediately called...no answer. I left a message explaining everything and to call me. After about 10 minutes, we get a call. The inn keeper says that she never got any messages or e-mails from me and that she had called, but was never able to leave a message the whole week (we had received various other messages during the week) and that she had a strict cancellation policy and was going to charge us the entire price for the room. I explained that we had tried to call her all week and she said she was out of town the entire week ( contradicting what she had said earlier that she had tried to call us before ) How would a person have cancelled even if they had wanted to? By the way, was she out of town the previous weekend when I tried to call all that time? She had already told me that she was the only person that works at the inn. Was it closed all weekend and weekdays the previous week? We found out that no, it was not closed. We got our phone records and she had not tried to call us at all, except for the 11th when we were already in Stoughton. She did indeed charge my card for the full amount of the room, but then reversed half back. We have contacted our bank and are in the process of getting the other half back. I don't know what's going on at that inn, but I would just say, be careful that you don't end up like I did. I would never again attempt a stay here and I would give this place no stars if I could, just for the bad business practices. I cannot speak for the inn its self.

The room was clean and had a rustic modern feel. When the carpet is beige, you know they have to take care of it consistently. Everything had a plush feel. The shower had a rainfall showerhead and a handheld. There's a scent that emanates throughout the hotel and into your room. It's light and adds to the ambiance. It's also in the sheets and linen too. I guess that adds to one of the negatives I list later in that the HVAC seems to be centrally controlled. There was some very minor debris in the sink that may have been left from wiping of a dirty rag, but that was mostly it. Gym was nice and parking was plentiful and free. What I didn't like: - Mini fridge in the room had a lot of snacks and other drinks that I assume were for sale. I usually pack my own food, so those items took up some space in the fridge - I get cold easily, so I try to adjust the thermostat, but it's centrally controlled, which I've never seen... I was only able to go to the communal area/lobby for the first morning as it was soon closed as they were started to do contactless check in/out. But it seems as though in less COVID-y times they have some coffee or tea there, light breakfast items like mini muffins or breakfast bars and fruit. They also had a communal puzzle and board games. Overall the place is super cozy, perfectly situated for a relaxing vacation with a number of restaurants and small shops to visit in Baraboo.

The mansion was built in 1856, making it the first mansion in Lake Geneva. The estate has been completely redone but charming details were kept. There is also a separate area in the back with motel rooms. Like I said, I was there for a lil' drink. There's a bar inside the mansion (Apothecary Bar) with all kinds of medical and druggist paraphernalia, with the space being a tribute to Dr. Philip Maxwell. But it's the speakeasy, which is accessible outside in the front of the house, that you'll want to visit. Ask for the password inside the mansion, and they will let you into a dark, below-ground bar. It's all decorated in prohibitionist flyers, and even the bartenders are dressed up in period costumes. It's a really cool and unique bar in Lake Geneva.

We ordered a flatbread pizza and a spinach artichoke dip as well as a couple of cocktails. They served us at a table where we sat on a couch in a room just across the hall and were quite comfortable. There are other rooms where you can go - not much seating in the actual apothecary bar.

Heather and Tom serve breakfast to all of their guests at a specific time. Everything is fresh and made to order from your menu choices. Guests are seated at tables of four, and it was delightful getting to know there others staying at the inn. The property is beautiful and there is a field with a horse, sheep and other animals. Heather and Tom make you feel right at home. They're friendly, and love to talk, but they're not intrusive. We enjoyed our relaxing stay at the Red Speckled Inn. I highly recommend it.
